Wurtzite GaN epilayers bombarded at 300 K with 200 MeV Au-197(16+) ions are studied by a combination of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Rutherford backscattering/channeling spectrometry (RBS/C). Results reveal the formation of near-continuous tracks propagating throughout the entire similar to1.5-mum-thick GaN film. These tracks, similar to100 Angstrom in diameter, exhibit a large degree of structural disordering but do not appear to be amorphous. Throughout the bombarded epilayer, high-resolution TEM reveals planar defects which are parallel to the basal plane of the GaN film. The gross level of lattice disorder, as measured by RBS/C, gradually increases with increasing ion fluence up to similar to10(13) cm(-2). For larger fluences, delamination of the nitride film from the sapphire substrate occurs. Based on these results, physical mechanisms of the formation of lattice disorder in GaN in such a high electronic stopping power regime are discussed. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

This paper presents a new low-complexity multicarrier modulation (MCM) technique based on lattices which achieves a peak-to-average power ratio (PAR) as low as three. The scheme can be viewed as a drop in replacement for the discrete multitone (DMT) modulation of an asymmetric digital subscriber line modem. We show that the lattice-MCM retains many of the attractive features of sinusoidal-MCM, and does so with lower implementation complexity, O(N), compared with DMT, which requires O(N log N) operations. We also present techniques for narrowband interference rejection and power profiling. Simulation studies confirm that performance of the lattice-MCM is superior, even compared with recent techniques for PAR reduction in DMT.

This review summarizes developments in the use of affinity chromatography to characterize biospecific interactions in terms of reaction stoichiometry and equilibrium constant. In that regard, the biospecificity incorporated into the design of the experiment ensures applicability of the method regardless of the sizes of the reacting solutes. By the adoption of different experimental strategies (column chromatography, simple partition equilibrium, solid-phase immunoassay and biosensor technology protocols) quantitatiative affinity chromatography can be used to characterize interactions governed by an extremely broad range of binding affinities. In addition, the link between ligand-binding studies and quantitative affinity chromatography is illustrated by means of partition equilibrium studies of glycolytic enzyme interactions with muscle myofibrils. an exercise which emphasizes that the same theoretical expressions apply to naturally occurring examples of affinity chromatography in the cellular environment. Statistical tests of Load-Unload Response Ratio (LURR) signals are carried in order to verify statistical robustness of the previous studies using the Lattice Solid Model (MORA et al., 2002b). In each case 24 groups of samples with the same macroscopic parameters (tidal perturbation amplitude A, period T and tectonic loading rate k) but different particle arrangements are employed. Results of uni-axial compression experiments show that before the normalized time of catastrophic failure, the ensemble average LURR value rises significantly, in agreement with the observations of high LURR prior to the large earthquakes. In shearing tests, two parameters are found to control the correlation between earthquake occurrence and tidal stress. One is, A/(kT) controlling the phase shift between the peak seismicity rate and the peak amplitude of the perturbation stress. With an increase of this parameter, the phase shift is found to decrease. Another parameter, AT/k, controls the height of the probability density function (Pdf) of modeled seismicity. As this parameter increases, the Pdf becomes sharper and narrower, indicating a strong triggering. Statistical studies of LURR signals in shearing tests also suggest that except in strong triggering cases, where LURR cannot be calculated due to poor data in unloading cycles, the larger events are more likely to occur in higher LURR periods than the smaller ones, supporting the LURR hypothesis.

The Lattice Solid Model has been used successfully as a virtual laboratory to simulate fracturing of rocks, the dynamics of faults, earthquakes and gouge processes. However, results from those simulations show that in order to make the next step towards more realistic experiments it will be necessary to use models containing a significantly larger number of particles than current models. Thus, those simulations will require a greatly increased amount of computational resources. Whereas the computing power provided by single processors can be expected to increase according to Moore's law, i.e., to double every 18-24 months, parallel computers can provide significantly larger computing power today. In order to make this computing power available for the simulation of the microphysics of earthquakes, a parallel version of the Lattice Solid Model has been implemented. Benchmarks using large models with several millions of particles have shown that the parallel implementation of the Lattice Solid Model can achieve a high parallel-efficiency of about 80% for large numbers of processors on different computer architectures.

In this article we study the effects of adsorbed phase compression, lattice structure, and pore size distribution on the analysis of adsorption in microporous activated carbon. The lattice gas approach of Ono-Kondo is modified to account for the above effects. Data of nitrogen adsorption at 77 K onto a number of activated carbon samples are analyzed to investigate the pore filling pressure versus pore width, the packing effect, and the compression of the adsorbed phase. It is found that the PSDs obtained from this analysis are comparable to those obtained by the DFT method. The discrete nature of the PSDs derived from the modified lattice gas theory is due to the inherent assumption of discrete layers of molecules. Nevertheless, it does provide interesting information on the evolution of micropores during the activation process.

A comparison is made between Arrhenius and transition-state analyses of the temperature dependence of rate constants reported in four published biosensor studies. Although the Eyring transition-state theory seemingly affords a more definitive solution to the problem of characterizing the activation energetics, the analysis is equivocal because of inherent assumptions about reaction mechanism and the magnitude of the transmission coefficient. In view of those uncertainties it is suggested that a preferable course of action entails reversion to the empirical Arrhenius analysis with regard to the energy of activation and a preexponential factor. The former is essentially equivalent to the enthalpy of activation, whereas the magnitude of the latter indicates directly the extent of disparity between the frequency of product formation and the universal frequency factor (temperature multiplied by the ratio of the Boltzmann and Planck constants) and hence the likelihood of a more complicated kinetic mechanism than that encompassed by the Eyring transition-state theory. The temperature dependence of the X-ray crystal structure and powder EPR spectrum of [(HC(Ph2PO)(3))(2)CU]-(ClO4)(2)center dot 2H(2)O is reported, and the structure at room temperature confirms that reported previously. Below similar to 100 K, the data imply a geometry with near elongated tetragonal symmetry for the [(HC(Ph2PO)(3))(2)Cu](2+) complex, but on warming the two higher Cu-O bond lengths and g-values progressively converge, and by 340 K the bond lengths correspond to a compressed tetragonal geometry. The data may be interpreted satisfactorily assuming an equilibrium among the energy levels of a Cu-O-6 polyhedron subjected to Jahn-Teller vibronic coupling and a lattice strain. However, agreement with the experiment is obtained only if the orthorhombic component of the lattice strain decreases to a negligible value as the temperature approaches 340 K.

The rate of electronic energy transfer (EET) between a naphthalene donor and an anthracene acceptor in [ZnL3]-(ClO4)(2) and [ZnL4](ClO4)(2) was determined by time-resolved fluorescence measurements, where L 3 and L 4 are the geometrical isomers of 6-[(anthracen-9-ylmethyl)amino]-trans-6,13-dimethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-13-amine (L-2), substituted with either a naphthalen-1-ylmethyl or naphthalen-2-ylmethyl donor, respectively. The energy transfer rate constant, k(EET), was determined to be (0.92 +/- 0.02) x 10(9) s(-1) for the naphthalen-1-ylmethyl-substituted isomer, while that for the naphthalen-2-ylmethyl-substituted isomer is somewhat faster, with k(EET) = (1.31 +/- 0.01) x 10(9) s(-1). The solid-state structure of [(ZnLCl)-Cl-3]ClO4 has been determined, and using molecular modeling calculations, the likely distributions of solution conformations in CH3CN have been evaluated for both complexes. The calculated conformational distributions in the common trans-III N-based isomeric form gave Forster EET rate constants that account for the differences observed and are in excellent agreement with the experimental values. It is shown that the full range of conformers must be considered to accurately reproduce the observed EET kinetics.

The temperature dependence of the structure of the mixed-anion Tutton salt K-2[Cu(H2O)(6)](SO4)(2x)(SeO4)(2-2x) has been determined for crystals with 0, 17, 25, 68, 78, and 100% sulfate over the temperature range of 85-320 K. In every case, the [Cu(H2O)(6)](2+) ion adopts a tetragonally elongated coordination geometry with an orthorhombic distortion. However, for the compounds with 0, 17, and 25% sulfate, the long and intermediate bonds occur on a different pair of water molecules from those with 68, 78, and 100% sulfate. A thermal equilibrium between the two forms is observed for each crystal, with this developing more readily as the proportions of the two counterions become more similar. Attempts to prepare a crystal with approximately equal amounts of sulfate and selenate were unsuccessful. The temperature dependence of the bond lengths has been analyzed using a model in which the Jahn-Teller potential surface of the [Cu(H2O)(6)](2+) ion is perturbed by a lattice-strain interaction. The magnitude and sign of the orthorhombic component of this strain interaction depends on the proportion of sulfate to selenate. Significant deviations from Boltzmann statistics are observed for those crystals exhibiting a large temperature dependence of the average bond lengths, and this may be explained by cooperative interactions between neighboring complexes.

The objective of this review is to draw attention to potential pitfalls in attempts to glean mechanistic information from the magnitudes of standard enthalpies and entropies derived from the temperature dependence of equilibrium and rate constants for protein interactions. Problems arise because the minimalist model that suffices to describe the energy differences between initial and final states usually comprises a set of linked equilibria, each of which is characterized by its own energetics. For example, because the overall standard enthalpy is a composite of those individual values, a positive magnitude for AHO can still arise despite all reactions within the subset being characterized by negative enthalpy changes: designation of the reaction as being entropy driven is thus equivocal. An experimenter must always bear in mind the fact that any mechanistic interpretation of the magnitudes of thermodynamic parameters refers to the reaction model rather than the experimental system For the same reason there is little point in subjecting the temperature dependence of rate constants for protein interactions to transition-state analysis. If comparisons with reported values of standard enthalpy and entropy of activation are needed, they are readily calculated from the empirical Arrhenius parameters.
