Objective: the aim of this work was to compare the effect of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on the wound healing process in nondiabetic and diabetic rats. Background Data: Among the clinical symptoms caused by diabetes mellitus, a delay in wound healing is a potential risk for patients. It is suggested that LLLT can improve wound healing. Methods: the tissue used for this study was extracted from animals suffering from diabetes, which was induced by Streptozotocin (R), and from nondiabetic rats. Animals were assembled into two groups of 25 rats each (treated and control) and further subdivided into two groups: diabetic (n = 15) and nondiabetic (n = 10). A full-thickness skin wound was made on the dorsum. area, with a round 8-mm hole-punch. The treated group was irradiated by a HeNe laser at 632.8 nm, with the following parameters: 15 mW, exposition time of 17 sec, 0.025 cm(2) irradiated area, and energy density of 10 J/cm(2). Square full-thickness skin samples (18 mm each side, including both injured and noninjured tissues) were obtained at 4, 7, and 15 days after surgery and analyzed by qualitative and quantitative histological methods. Results: Quantitative histopathological analysis confirmed the results of the qualitative analysis through histological microscope slides. When comparing tissue components (inflammatory cells, vessels and fibroblast/area), we found that treated animals had a less intense inflammatory process than controls. Conclusion: Results obtained by both qualitative and quantitative analyses suggested that irradiation of rats with HeNe (632.8 nm), at the tested dose, promoted efficient wound healing in both nondiabetic and diabetic rats as, compared to the control group.

We use a (CO2)-C-13 laser as optical pumping source to search for new THz laser lines generated from (CH3OH)-C-13. Nineteen new THz laser lines (also identified as far-infrared, FIR) ranging from 42.3 mu m (7.1 THz) to 717.7 mu m (0.42 THz) are reported. They are characterized in wavelength, offset, relative polarization, relative intensity, and optimum working pressure. We have assigned eight laser lines to specific rotational energy levels in the excited state associated with the C-O stretching mode. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

It has been suggested that low-level laser therapy (LLLT) can modulate inflammatory processes. The aim of this experiment was to investigate what effects red laser irradiation with two different wavelengths (660 nm and 684 nm) on carrageenan-induced rat paw edema and histology. Thirty two male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups. One group received a sterile saline injection, while inflammation was induced by a sub-plantar injection of carrageenan (1 mg/paw) in the three other groups. After 1 h, LLLT was administered to the paw in two of the carrageenan-injected groups. Continuous wave 660 nm and 684 nm red lasers respectively with mean optical outputs of 30 mW and doses of 7.5 J/cm(2) were used. The 660 nm and 684 nm laser groups developed significantly (P < 0.01) less edema (0.58 ml [SE +/- 0.17] ml and 0.76 ml [SE +/- 0.10] respectively) than the control group (1.67 ml [SE +/- 0.191) at 4 h after injections. Similarly, both laser groups showed a significantly lower number of inflammatory cells in the muscular and conjunctive sub-plantar tissues than the control group. We conclude that both 660 nm and 684 nm red wavelengths of LLLT are effective in reducing edema formation and inflammatory cell migration when a dose of 7.5 J/cm(2) is used. In this work we present high resolution Doppler limited absorption spectra measurements of the C-O stretching mode of (CH3OH)-C-13, obtained from diode laser spectroscopy, and the Fourier Transform spectrum obtained at 0. 12 cm-1 resolution. By using these data and previously known spectroscopic information, we determined the frequency and the J quantum number for the multiplets of the P and R(J) branches of the C-O stretching fundamental band. Infrared transitions in coincidence with emission lines of the regular CO2 laser and some of its isotope parents are pointed out.

The vibrational multiphoton excitation of ethanol in the presence of oxygen results in chemiluminescent reactions yielding CH* and C*2. The rise times of the chemiluminescence become progressively slower and the intensity increases with ad-O2 pressure. At 15 Torr of O2 the emission duration is longer than 10 μs. © 1983.

Surface morphology changes induced by argon laser irradiation (514 nm) on disperse red 13 (DR13) films prepared by physical vapor deposition (PVD) were investigated. Atomic force microscopy was used to characterize the irradiated sample for different periods of irradiation. Needle-shape structures are observed which are attributed to the symmetry of DR13 molecules. The film becomes increasingly closely packed with the irradiation, with lower root mean square roughness for long exposure times. This is due to photoisomerization of DR13 molecules and probably heating of the sample, which can provide the required mobility for the molecular rearrangement. The rearrangement is such that voids in the film are filled in upon irradiating the sample, thus decreasing the film roughness and increasing the packing.

Diabetes Mellitus is a condition that results in a delay of the wound healing process, that is associated with an insufficient production of collagen, a decrease of the amount of collagen fibrils and deficient blood flow in the wound area. It is suggested that Low Intensity Laser Therapy acts by improving wound healing in normal organisms, accelerating tissue regeneration. The aim of this work was to investigate the biostimulatory effect of the HeNe laser irradiation, at 632.8 nm, on wound healing in 15 male rats suffering from diabetes induced by Streptozotocin, compared to 15 control diabetic animals. Irradiation parameters were: laser power of 15mW, exposition time of 17 s., irradiated area of 0.025 cm 2 and laser energy density of 10 J/cm 2. Full-thickness skin squared samples, with 5 mm of non-injured tissue around the wound, were obtained at 4, 7 and 15 days after wounding procedure (5 treated and 5 control animals each time). The histopathologic analysis performed by haematoxylin-eosin staining. Results suggested that the irradiation of diabetic rats was efficient for wound healing. Treated group presented better quality of the wound tissues by the macroscopic observation than control group and the microscopic analysis demonstrated that treated animals had better histopathologic evaluation than non treated.

Fluorescence diagnosis of malignant lesions has been showed as an attractive optical technique due especially to its real-time response and a more objective and quantitative evaluation. Even though the oral cavity allows a direct examination many lesions are diagnosed when it is already in advanced stage, compromising the patient prognosis. In this study, the fluorescence spectroscopy was used to the detection of chemically induced carcinoma at the lateral border of the tongue in a hamster model. Two excitations wavelengths in visible region were applied: 442 and 532 nm. All the spectra results were analyzed comparing with the histopathological diagnosis. The better results were achieved with the 442 nm laser excitation. The spectra from carcinoma showed new emission bands and these were used to determined different ratios for a quantitative analysis. Using the 625-645 nm fluorescence range under 442 nm excitation (A3 coefficient) the percentage of false negative was of 9.1%, however the false positive percentage was of 18.5%. The 532 nm excitation provided a better normal tissue detection compared to 442 nm excitation. The ideal clinical condition is probably the use of multiple wavelengths excitation for a broader tissue fluorescence investigation.

The food dye tartrazine (CI 19140) was exposed to UV irradiation from an artificial source, a mercury vapor lamp, and a natural one, sunlight. It was observed that conditions such as energy dose, irradiation time, pH and initial dye concentration affected its discoloration. There was 100% of color removal, after 30 min of irradiation, when a dye solution 1 x 10(-5) mol L-1 was submitted to an energy dose of 37.8 J cm(-2). Liquid Chromatography coupled to Diode Array Detection and Mass Spectrometry confirmed the cleavage of the chromophore group and the formation of five by-products at low concentration. Although by-products were formed, the Salmonella/microsome mutagenicity assay performed for both, the dye solution at a dose of 5.34 mg/plate and the solutions obtained after exposure to UV irradiation, did not present mutagenic activity for TA98 and TA100 with and without S9.
