The distribution of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and nitrate were determined seasonally (winter, spring and summer) during three years along line P, i.e. an E-W transect from the coast of British Columbia, Canada, to Station P (50degreesN, 145degreesW) in the subarctic North East Pacific Ocean. In conjunction, DON measurements were made in the Straits of Juan de Fuca and Georgia within an estuarine system connected to the NE Pacific Ocean. The distribution of DON at the surface showed higher values of 4-17 muM in the Straits relative to values of 4-10 muM encountered along line P, respectively. Along line P, the concentration of DON showed an inshore-offshore gradient at the surface with higher values near the coast. The equation for the conservation of DON showed that horizontal transport of DON (inshore-offshore) was much larger than vertical physical mixing. Horizontal advection of DON-rich waters from the coastal estuarine system to the NE Pacific Ocean was likely the cause of the inshore-offshore gradient in the concentration of DON. Although the concentration of DON was very variable in space and time, it increased from winter to summer, with an average build up of 4.3 muM in the Straits and 0.7 muM in the NE subarctic Pacific. This implied seasonal DON sources of 0.3 mmol N m(-2) d(-1) at Station P and 1.5 mmol N m(-2) d(-1) in the Straits, respectively. These seasonal DON accumulation rates corresponded to about 15-20% of the seasonal nitrate uptake and suggested that there was a small seasonal build up of labile DON at the surface. However, the long residence times of 180-1560 d indicated that the most of the DON pool in surface waters was refractory in two very different productivity regimes of the NE Pacific. 由于缺乏相应的沉积地层,贵州新生代地质、环境演化恢复一直是学术界的难点问题。夷平面研究的兴起,为陆地地壳抬升、地貌演变等反演提供了理论基础,而风化壳正是夷平面研究的重要替代对象,尤其是对各类沉积地层不发育的地区。因而,贵州高原各级台地上发育有较为广泛的红色风化壳自然地、就成了主要研究载体。然而一与其它岩类不同,碳酸盐岩风化成土作用过程研究并没有得到同等重视,其研究范围和程度均很不充分。显然,要想利用碳酸盐岩风化壳进行夷平面等地质、地貌意义研究,就必需详细了解贵州或中国南方碳酸盐岩风化成土的基本过程。也只有如此,才能明确各种对比指标的使用条件和范围,才能明确各种测年结果的具体意义,才能真正地通过贵州碳酸盐岩风化壳获取全省地质、环境演化信息。本论文通过对贵州省岩溶台地碳酸盐岩石灰土、红色风化壳剖面形成地球化学过程的剖析,开展石灰土与红色风化壳之间的关联和差异性综合对比、红色风化壳之间发育程度的比较,以及风化壳剖面尝试性的侧年等方面研究,取得了以下儿点认识:1、石灰土形成地球化学过程及对比通过矿物组成、粒度分布特征、地球化学方法判别,确定了本文所选石灰土剖面物质来源于下伏碳酸盐岩中的酸不溶物,是碳酸盐岩风化后酸不溶物原地残余堆积的结果。石灰土形成的地球化学过程都遵循碳酸盐岩风化成土之两阶段模式:母岩-酸不溶物,大量可溶性物质Ca、Mg、Mn、P、Na淋失,而Si、K·Fe、Al、Ti则相对富集。该过程的矿物组成变化表现为,伴随碳酸盐矿物(方解石、白云石等)的溶解、迁移,硅酸盐相矿物(长石、2:1型粘土矿物等)残余、累积。酸不溶物,土层或土层的演化,K、Si(长石、伊利石)不断淋失,而Al(伊利石、高岭石、三水铝石)、Fe(针铁矿、赤铁矿等)逐渐富集,体现出脱硅、富铝(铁)过程。我们强调碳酸盐岩风化成土分为两个阶段,但也认识到风化作用是综合的、复杂的:在碳酸盐矿物大量淋失过程中,同时也进行着酸不溶物的风化。石灰土分为原生和次生两种成因类型。原生石灰土的风化程度总体较低,剖面中还残留一定量的CaCO3,剖面从下到上矿物组成、地球化学各种指标具有逐渐演化的过渡特征。原生石灰上土层演化过程显示出正风化序列,从下到上风化程度逐渐增大、可溶性物质逐渐减少、稳定和相对稳定组分(Al、Fe.、REE)含量不断增大。另外,主量元素的质量迁移系数在剖面中的变化与风化程度呈明显的相关性。而次生石灰土不但具有很高的风化程度,而且剖面无过渡特征,显示可能是由遭受强烈风化作用的物质直接转变形成的。剖面中也含有一定量后期加入的碳酸盐,但与高CIA值特征不相匹配;SiO2、Al2O3、Fe2O3组分具有不同的变化特征,与)成化程度无明显关联;REE在剖面岩一上界面出现富集层。2、碳酸盐岩红色风化壳形成地球化学过程及其与石灰土的对比红色风化壳形成的地球化学过程也遵循碳酸盐岩风化成土之两阶段模式:母岩一酸不溶物,大量可溶性物质Ca、Mg、Mn、P、Na淋失,而Si、K、Fe、Al、Ti则相对富集。该过程的矿物组成变化表现为,伴随碳酸盐矿物(方解石、白云石等)的溶解、迁移,硅酸盆相矿物(长石、2:1型粘土矿物等)残余、累积。酸不济物一土层或上层的演化,K、Si(长石、伊利石)不断淋失,而Al(伊利石、高岭石、三水铝石)、Fe(针铁矿、赤铁矿等)逐渐富集,体现出脱硅、富铝(铁)过程。石灰土与红色风化壳之间既存在共性,又有一定的差异性。红色风化壳与原生石灰土一样都具有过渡特征,但后者仅在剖面下部出现一定的过渡层位;原生石灰士的城化程度远低于红色风化壳,仅与后者底部土层相当;原生石灰土不具有红色风化壳之岩-土REE(超常)富集层。总体上,原生石灰土可以作为红色风化壳的前身。次生石灰土与红色风化壳在矿物组成、风化程度等各种地球化学指标等都十分接近(略低),显示与红色风化壳之间存在某种关联:由红色风化壳物质直接转变,或由酸不溶物已强烈风化的(白云岩)岩粉、碎裂岩风化形成。3、碳酸盐岩风化成土母岩差异性碳酸盐岩风化成土存在母岩差异性,石灰土母岩差异性较为明显,而红色风化壳的母岩差异性较弱,体现出红色风化壳的均一化特征。石灰土母岩差异性体现为:母岩为灰岩的石灰土剖面主量元素含量变化特征较为一致,而白云岩则具有不同的变化;灰岩石灰土Fe3+、Al具有不同的富集、亏损特征,且具有富集层的补偿亏损层,而白云岩石灰上两组分都呈现无补偿层位的相同富集态势;灰岩石灰土剖面出现负Eu异常和具以Gd中心的倒“V”型MREE稀土富集特征(母岩标准化),而白云岩石灰土无明显Eu异常和具L既E或HREE稀士.富集特征;灰岩和白云岩石灰土的微量元素富集、亏损特征也有所不同,前者从上到下逐渐富集,而后者无明显变化趋势。红色风化壳形成的基本过程、主量元素地球化学行为无明显的母岩相关性,没有如石灰土剖面灰岩和白云岩之间存在的差异性,显示出红土化作用的均一化过程;微量元素中受重矿物影响的元素与母岩类型有一定的关联,但大多数元素的亏损、富集等与具体剖面的微环境关系密切。4、碳酸盐岩红色风化壳发育程度的对比及意义多利指标对比显示所选红色风化壳的风化程度有一定的强弱差别:平坝剖面>湖潮剖面>天龙剖面、大兴剖面>花溪剖面、新蒲剖面,但这种差异性不足以否定各剖面隶属于贵州山盆期广泛夷平面的基本推测。各剖面之间的微弱差异是红色风化壳形成时纬度分带和垂向分带的体现。低纬度的平坝、湖潮、天龙剖面经历的风化作用强于高纬度的新蒲、大兴剖面;高海拔的新蒲剖面风化程度低于海拔低的大兴剖面。5、红色风化壳次生石英裂变径迹测年红色风化壳次生石英裂变径迹方法测年尝试,得到一定的结果和认识:晶形相对较好的石英,是次生的,与母岩中碎屑及成岩阶段没有关联;各剖面上部与中、下部次生石英的诱发裂变径迹的密度有着明显的区别,可能暗示它们的形成环境不同;名一剖面石英的形成或退火年龄分布较为分散,1.2-25.2Ma,同一剖面的石英年龄也不均一,变化较大;从下到上,年龄值呈现出逐渐减小的规律性,与风化作用的正常序列相反。如果能确切其成因,次生石英裂变径迹年代学研究将是确定风化壳形成时代及揭示主要风化作用信,却钩有利武器。

We discuss a strategy for visual recognition by forming groups of salient image features, and then using these groups to index into a data base to find all of the matching groups of model features. We discuss the most space efficient possible method of representing 3-D models for indexing from 2-D data, and show how to account for sensing error when indexing. We also present a convex grouping method that is robust and efficient, both theoretically and in practice. Finally, we combine these modules into a complete recognition system, and test its performance on many real images.

The recognition of 3-D objects from sequences of their 2-D views is modeled by a family of self-organizing neural architectures, called VIEWNET, that use View Information Encoded With NETworks. VIEWNET incorporates a preprocessor that generates a compressed but 2-D invariant representation of an image, a supervised incremental learning system that classifies the preprocessed representations into 2-D view categories whose outputs arc combined into 3-D invariant object categories, and a working memory that makes a 3-D object prediction by accumulating evidence from 3-D object category nodes as multiple 2-D views are experienced. The simplest VIEWNET achieves high recognition scores without the need to explicitly code the temporal order of 2-D views in working memory. Working memories are also discussed that save memory resources by implicitly coding temporal order in terms of the relative activity of 2-D view category nodes, rather than as explicit 2-D view transitions. Variants of the VIEWNET architecture may also be used for scene understanding by using a preprocessor and classifier that can determine both What objects are in a scene and Where they are located. The present VIEWNET preprocessor includes the CORT-X 2 filter, which discounts the illuminant, regularizes and completes figural boundaries, and suppresses image noise. This boundary segmentation is rendered invariant under 2-D translation, rotation, and dilation by use of a log-polar transform. The invariant spectra undergo Gaussian coarse coding to further reduce noise and 3-D foreshortening effects, and to increase generalization. These compressed codes are input into the classifier, a supervised learning system based on the fuzzy ARTMAP algorithm. Fuzzy ARTMAP learns 2-D view categories that are invariant under 2-D image translation, rotation, and dilation as well as 3-D image transformations that do not cause a predictive error. Evidence from sequence of 2-D view categories converges at 3-D object nodes that generate a response invariant under changes of 2-D view. These 3-D object nodes input to a working memory that accumulates evidence over time to improve object recognition. ln the simplest working memory, each occurrence (nonoccurrence) of a 2-D view category increases (decreases) the corresponding node's activity in working memory. The maximally active node is used to predict the 3-D object. Recognition is studied with noisy and clean image using slow and fast learning. Slow learning at the fuzzy ARTMAP map field is adapted to learn the conditional probability of the 3-D object given the selected 2-D view category. VIEWNET is demonstrated on an MIT Lincoln Laboratory database of l28x128 2-D views of aircraft with and without additive noise. A recognition rate of up to 90% is achieved with one 2-D view and of up to 98.5% correct with three 2-D views. The properties of 2-D view and 3-D object category nodes are compared with those of cells in monkey inferotemporal cortex.

Working memory neural networks are characterized which encode the invariant temporal order of sequential events. Inputs to the networks, called Sustained Temporal Order REcurrent (STORE) models, may be presented at widely differing speeds, durations, and interstimulus intervals. The STORE temporal order code is designed to enable all emergent groupings of sequential events to be stably learned and remembered in real time, even as new events perturb the system. Such a competence is needed in neural architectures which self-organize learned codes for variable-rate speech perception, sensory-motor planning, or 3-D visual object recognition. Using such a working memory, a self-organizing architecture for invariant 3-D visual object recognition is described. The new model is based on the model of Seibert and Waxman (1990a), which builds a 3-D representation of an object from a temporally ordered sequence of its 2-D aspect graphs. The new model, called an ARTSTORE model, consists of the following cascade of processing modules: Invariant Preprocessor --> ART 2 --> STORE Model --> ART 2 --> Outstar Network.

An important component of this Ph.D. thesis was to determine the European consumers’ views on processed meats and bioactive compounds. Thus a survey gathered information form over 500 respondents and explored their perceptions on the healthiness and purchase-ability for both traditional and functional processed meats. This study found that the consumer was distrustful towards processed meat, especially high salt and fat content. Consumers were found to be very pro-bioactive compounds in yogurt style products but unsure of their feelings on the idea of them in meat based products, which is likely due to the lack of familiarity to these products. The work in this thesis also centred on the applied acceptable reduction of salt and fat in terms of consumer sensory analysis. The products chosen ranged in the degree of comminution, from a coarse beef patty to a more fine emulsion style breakfast sausage and frankfurter. A full factorial design was implemented which saw the production of twenty beef patties with varying concentrations of fat (30%, 40%, 50%, 60% w/w) and salt (0.5%, 0.75%, 1.0%, 1.25%, 1.5% w/w). Twenty eight sausage were also produced with varying concentrations of fat (22.5%, 27.5%, 32.5%, 37.5% w/w) and salt (0.8%, 1%, 1.2%, 1.4%, 1.6%, 2%, 2.4% w/w). Finally, twenty different frankfurters formulations were produced with varying concentrations of fat (10%, 15%, 20%, 25% w/w) and salt (1%, 1.5%, 2%, 2.5%, 3% w/w). From these products it was found that the most consumer acceptable beef patty was that containing 40% fat with a salt level of 1%. This is a 20% decrease in fat and a 50% decrease in salt levels when compared to commercial patty available in Ireland and the UK. For sausages, salt reduced products were rated by the consumers as paler in colour, more tender and with greater meat flavour than higher salt containing products. The sausages containing 1.4 % and 1.0 % salt were significantly (P<0.01) found to be more acceptable to consumers than other salt levels. Frankfurter salt levels below 1.5% were shown to have a negative effect on consumer acceptability, with 2.5% salt concentration being the most accepted (P<0.001) by consumers. Samples containing less fat and salt were found to be tougher, less juicy and had greater cooking losses. Thus salt perception is very important for consumer acceptability, but fat levels can be potentially reduced without significantly affecting overall acceptability. Overall it can be summarised that the consumer acceptability of salt and fat reduced processed meats depends very much on the product and generalisations cannot be assumed. The study of bio-actives in processed meat products found that the reduced salt/fat patties fortified with CoQ10 were rated as more acceptable than commercially available products for beef patties. The reduced fat and salt, as well as the CoQ10 fortified, sausages were found to compare quite well to their commercial counterparts for overall acceptability, whereas commercial frankfurters were found to be the more favoured in comparison to reduced fat and CoQ10 fortified Frankfurters.

The use of unmalted oats or sorghum in brewing has great potential for creating new beer types/flavors and saving costs. However, the substitution of barley malt with oat or sorghum adjunct is not only innovative but also challenging due to their specific grain characteristics. The overall objectives of this Ph.D. project were: 1) to investigate the impact of various types and levels of oats or sorghum on the quality/processability of mashes, worts, and beers; 2) to provide solutions as regards the application of industrial enzymes to overcome potential brewing problems. For these purposes, a highly precise rheological method using a controlled stress rheometer was developed and successfully applied as a tool for optimizing enzyme additions and process parameters. Further, eight different oat cultivars were compared in terms of their suitability as brewing adjuncts and two very promising types identified. In another study, the limitations of barley malt enzymes and the benefits of the application of industrial enzymes in high-gravity brewing with oats were determined. It is recommended to add enzymes to high-gravity mashes when substituting 30% or more barley malt with oats in order to prevent filtration and fermentation problems. Pilot-scale brewing trials using 10–40% unmalted oats revealed that the sensory quality of oat beers improved with increasing adjunct level. In addition, commercially available oat and sorghum flours were implemented into brewing. The use of up to 70% oat flour and 50% sorghum flour, respectively, is not only technically feasible but also economically beneficial. In a further study on sorghum was demonstrated that the optimization of industrial mashing enzymes has great potential for reducing beer production costs. A comparison of the brewing performance of red Italian and white Nigerian sorghum clearly showed that European grown sorghum is suitable for brewing purposes; 40% red sorghum beers were even found to be very low in gluten.

Recent efforts to endogenize technological change in climate policy models demonstrate the importance of accounting for the opportunity cost of climate R&D investments. Because the social returns to R&D investments are typically higher than the social returns to other types of investment, any new climate mitigation R&D that comes at the expense of other R&D investment may dampen the overall gains from induced technological change. Unfortunately, there has been little empirical work to guide modelers as to the potential magnitude of such crowding out effects. This paper considers both the private and social opportunity costs of climate R&D. Addressing private costs, we ask whether an increase in climate R&D represents new R&D spending, or whether some (or all) of the additional climate R&D comes at the expense of other R&D. Addressing social costs, we use patent citations to compare the social value of alternative energy research to other types of R&D that may be crowded out. Beginning at the industry level, we find no evidence of crowding out across sectors-that is, increases in energy R&D do not draw R&D resources away from sectors that do not perform R&D. Given this, we proceed with a detailed look at alternative energy R&D. Linking patent data and financial data by firm, we ask whether an increase in alternative energy patents leads to a decrease in other types of patenting activity. While we find that increases in alternative energy patents do result in fewer patents of other types, the evidence suggests that this is due to profit-maximizing changes in research effort, rather than financial constraints that limit the total amount of R&D possible. Finally, we use patent citation data to compare the social value of alternative energy patents to other patents by these firms. Alternative energy patents are cited more frequently, and by a wider range of other technologies, than other patents by these firms, suggesting that their social value is higher. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.
