A dual catalyst bed system (Au/Fe2O3 + Pt-Pd/Al2O3) for eliminating hydrogen from the CO2 feed gas in urea synthesis is found to be far superior to commercially available and patented catalysts in catalytic activity. At relatively low temperatures, hydrogen is eliminated and coexistent CO is also oxidized completely to useful CO2. This can avoid effectively the accidental explosion of hydrogen-oxygen-ammonia mixed gases, thus ensuring the safety of urea synthesis.

We present a new set of deep H I observations of member galaxies of the Fornax cluster. We detected 35 cluster galaxies in H I. The resulting sample, the most comprehensive to date, is used to investigate the distribution of neutral hydrogen in the cluster galaxies. We compare the H I content of the detected cluster galaxies with that of field galaxies by measuring H I mass-to-light ratios and the H I deficiency parameter of Solanes et al. (1996). The mean H I mass-to-light ratio of the cluster galaxies is 0.68 +/- 0.15, significantly lower than for a sample of H I-selected field galaxies (1.15 +/- 0.10), although not as low as in the Virgo cluster (0.45 +/- 0.03). In addition, the H I content of two cluster galaxies (NGC1316C and NGC1326B) appears to have been affected by interactions. The mean H I deficiency for the cluster is 0.38 +/- 0.09 (for galaxy types T = 1-6), significantly greater than for the field sample (0.05 +/- 0.03). Both these tests show that Fornax cluster galaxies are H I-deficient compared to field galaxies. The kinematics of the cluster galaxies suggests that the H I deficiency may be caused by ram-pressure stripping of galaxies on orbits that pass close to the cluster core. We also derive the most complete B-band Tully-Fisher relation of inclined spiral galaxies in Fornax. A subcluster in the South-West of the main cluster contributes considerably to the scatter. The scatter for galaxies in the main cluster alone is 0.50 mag, which is slightly larger than the intrinsic scatter of 0.4 mag. We use the Tully-Fisher relation to derive a distance modulus of Fornax relative to the Virgo cluster of -0.38 +/- 0.14 mag. The galaxies in the subcluster are (1.0 +/- 0.5) mag brighter than the galaxies of the main cluster, indicating that they are situated in the foreground. With their mean velocity 95 km s(-1) higher than that of the main cluster we conclude that the subcluster is falling into the main Fornax cluster.

Heterogeneous copper catalyst was developed using the mesoporous molecular sieve MCM-41 as the catalyst support. Copper was impregnated onto the support. Catalysts with different copper loadings were obtained. The performance of the developed catalysts was evaluated in photochemically enhanced oxidation of phenol using hydrogen peroxide as the oxidant. The catalyst was found to significantly increase the oxidation rate and enhance the removal level of phenol with UV light present. The effects of copper loading on the catalyst, photo (UV), H2O2 concentration, and catalyst dosage on the photo-oxidation of phenol were studied. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Using data from the H I Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS), we have searched for neutral hydrogen in galaxies in a region similar to25x25 deg(2) centred on NGC 1399, the nominal centre of the Fornax cluster. Within a velocity search range of 300-3700 km s(-1) and to a 3sigma lower flux limit of similar to40 mJy, 110 galaxies with H I emission were detected, one of which is previously uncatalogued. None of the detections has early-type morphology. Previously unknown velocities for 14 galaxies have been determined, with a further four velocity measurements being significantly dissimilar to published values. Identification of an optical counterpart is relatively unambiguous for more than similar to90 per cent of our H I galaxies. The galaxies appear to be embedded in a sheet at the cluster velocity which extends for more than 30degrees across the search area. At the nominal cluster distance of similar to20 Mpc, this corresponds to an elongated structure more than 10 Mpc in extent. A velocity gradient across the structure is detected, with radial velocities increasing by similar to500 km s(-1) from south-east to north-west. The clustering of galaxies evident in optical surveys is only weakly suggested in the spatial distribution of our H I detections. Of 62 H I detections within a 10degrees projected radius of the cluster centre, only two are within the core region (projected radius

Xylanases are enzymes that are very tolerant to temperature. Their potential use in several biotechnological applications, such as animal food manufacture and pulp bleaching, is due to their intrinsic thermostability. The present report deals with two xylanases, the mesophilic xylanase from Bacillus circulans, BCX, and the thermophilic xylanase from Thermomyces lanuginosus,TLX. These enzymes belong to family 11, and they are the most structurally similar mesophilic-thermophilic pair. Molecular dynamics simulations were employed to investigate the factors responsible for the different thermostabilities exhibited by these structurally similar enzymes. Their active site is their most rigid region, and it is equally rigid at all temperatures. Inter and intramolecular interactions, hydrogen bonds in particular, are the key to the main differences between BCX and TLX. The intramolecular hydrogen bonds and salt bridges are important for maintenance of the backbone rigidity even at high temperature, and the highly solvated surface is a clear optimization in TLX compared with BCX. The main differences between these two enzymes can be found on the fingers domain, which indicates that this domain must be the target for the site-directed mutagenesis responsible for improving the temperature tolerance of this family of enzymes.

This work reports on the effect of initial substrate concentration on COD consumption, pH, and H(2) production during cassava processing wastewater fermentation by Clostridium acetobutylicum ATCC 824. Five initial COD wastewater concentrations, namely 5.0, 7.5, 10.7, 15.0, and 30.0 g/L, were used. The results showed that higher substrate concentrations (30.0 and 15.0 COD/L) led to lower H(2) yield as well as less efficient substrate conversion into H(2). On the other hand, initial COD concentrations of 10.7, 7.5 and 5 g/L furnished 1.34, 1.2 and 2.41 mol H(2)/mol glucose, with efficiency of glucose conversion into H(2) of 34, 30, and 60% (mol/mol), respectively. These results demonstrate that cassava processing wastewater, a highly polluting effluent, can be successfully employed as substrate for H(2) production by C acetobutylicum at lower COD concentrations. The stress corrosion cracking (SCC) behavior and pre-exposure embrittlement of AZ31 magnesium alloy have been studied by slow strain rate tensile (SSRT) tests in this paper. It is showed that AZ31 sheet material is susceptible to SCC in distilled water, ASTM D1.387 solution, 0.01 M NaCl and 0.1 M NaCl solution. The AZ31 magnesium alloy also becomes embrittled if pre-exposed to 0.01 M NaCl solution prior to tensile testing. The degree of embrittlement increased with increasing the pre-exposure time, It is proposed that both the pre-exposure embrittlement and SCC were due to hydrogen which reduces the cohesive strength. i,e,. hydrogen embrittlement, (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Background. Cisplatin (CP)-induced renal damage is associated with inflammation. Hydrogen sulphide (H(2)S) is involved in models of inflammation. This study evaluates the effect of DL-propargylglycine (PAG), an inhibitor of endogenous H(2)S formation, on the renal damage induced by CP. Methods. The rats were injected with CP (5 mg/kg, i.p.) or PAG(5 mg/kg twice a day, i.p.) for 4 days, starting 1 h before CP injection. Control rats were injected with 0.15 M NaCl or PAG only. Blood and urine samples were collected 5 days after saline or CP injections for renal function evaluation. The kidneys were removed for tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha quantification, histological, immunohistochemical and Western blot analysis. The cystathionine gamma-lyase (CSE) activity and expression were assessed. The direct toxicity of H(2)S in renal tubular cells was evaluated by the incubation of these cells with NaHS, a donor of H(2)S. Results. CP-treated rats presented increases in plasma creatinine levels and in sodium and potassium fractional excretions associated with tubulointerstitial lesions in the outer medulla. Increased expression of TNF-alpha, macrophages, neutrophils and T lymphocytes, associated with increased H(2)S formation rate and CSE expression, were also observed in the outer medulla from CP-injected rats. All these alterations were reduced by treatment with PAG. A direct toxicity of NaHS for renal tubular epithelial cells was not observed. Conclusions. Treatment with PAG reduces the renal damage induced by CP. This effect seems to be related to the H2S formation and the restriction of the inflammation in the kidneys from PAG+CP-treated rats.

It has been known since the early sixties that nickel sulfide inclusions cause spontaneous fracture of toughened (thermally tempered) glass, but despite the considerable amount of work done on this problem in the last four decades, failures still occur in the field with regularity. In this study we have classified (by viewing through a 60x optical microscope) inclusions into two groups, which are classic and atypical nickel sulfides. The classics look like the nickel sulfide inclusions found at the initiation-of-fracture of windows that have broken spontaneously. We have compared the structure and composition of the atypical inclusions with the structure and composition of the classics. All of the classic and atypical nickel sulfide inclusions studied in this work were found to have a composition in the range of Ni52S48 to Ni48S52. Inclusions on the nickel rich side of stoichiometric NiS were found to be two-phase assemblies, and inclusions on the sulphur rich side of NiS were single phase. It had been proposed that the atypicals were passive, and of a different composition to the classics. However, we found that the difference between passive and dangerous nickel sulfide inclusions was not a difference in composition but rather a difference in the type of material in the internal pore space. The passive's had carbon char in their internal pore space, whereas the pore space of dangerous inclusions contained Na2O. The presence of Na2O and carbon char with the inclusions indicates that the formation of the inclusions results from a reaction of a nickel-rich phase with sodium sulphate and carbon. To evaluate the effect of low and highly concentrated bleaching agents on microhardness and surface roughness of bovine enamel and root dentin. According to a randomized complete block design, 100 specimens of each substrate were assigned into five groups to be treated with bleaching agents containing carbamide peroxide (CP) at 10% (CP10); hydrogen peroxide (HP) at 7.5% (HP7.5) or 38% (HP38), or the combination of 18% of HP and 22% of CP (HP18/CP22), for 3 weeks. The control group was left untreated. Specimens were immersed in artificial saliva between bleaching treatments. Knoop surface microhardness (SMH) and average surface roughness (Ra) were measured at baseline and post-bleaching conditions. For enamel, there were differences between bleaching treatments for both SMH and Ra measurements (p = 0.4009 and p = 0.7650, respectively). SMH significantly increased (p < 0.0001), whereas Ra decreased (p = 0.0207) from baseline to post-bleaching condition. For root dentin, the group treated with CP10 exhibited the significantly highest SMH value differing from those groups bleached with HP18/CP22, HP7.5, which did not differ from each other. Application of HP38 resulted in intermediate SMH values. No significant differences were found for Ra (p = 0.5975). Comparing the baseline and post-bleaching conditions, a decrease was observed in SMH (p < 0.0001) and an increase in Ra (p = 0.0063). Bleaching agents with varying concentrations of CP and/or HP are capable of causing mineral loss in root dentin. Enamel does not perform in such bleaching agent-dependent fashion when one considers either hardness or surface roughness evaluations. Bleaching did not alter the enamel microhardness and surface roughness, but in root dentin, microhardness seems to be dependent on the bleaching agent used.

Recent progress in the production, purification, and experimental and theoretical investigations of carbon nanotubes for hydrogen storage are reviewed. From the industrial point of view, the chemical vapor deposition process has shown advantages over laser ablation and electric-arc-discharge methods. The ultimate goal in nanotube synthesis should be to gain control over geometrical aspects of nanotubes, such as location and orientation, and the atomic structure of nanotubes, including helicity and diameter. There is currently no effective and simple purification procedure that fulfills all requirements for processing carbon nanotubes. Purification is still the bottleneck for technical applications, especially where large amounts of material are required. Although the alkali-metal-doped carbon nanotubes showed high H-2 Weight uptake, further investigations indicated that some of this uptake was due to water rather than hydrogen. This discovery indicates a potential source of error in evaluation of the storage capacity of doped carbon nanotubes. Nevertheless, currently available single-wall nanotubes yield a hydrogen uptake value near 4 wt% under moderate pressure and room temperature. A further 50% increase is needed to meet U.S. Department of Energy targets for commercial exploitation. Meeting this target will require combining experimental and theoretical efforts to achieve a full understanding of the adsorption process, so that the uptake can be rationally optimized to commercially attractive levels. Large-scale production and purification of carbon nanotubes and remarkable improvement of H-2 storage capacity in carbon nanotubes represent significant technological and theoretical challenges in the years to come.

Dimethyl sulfide dehydrogenase from the purple phototrophic bacterium Rhodovulum sulfidophilum catalyzes the oxidation of dimethyl sulfide to dimethyl sulfoxide. Recent DNA sequence analysis of the ddh operon, encoding dimethyl sulfide dehydrogenase (ddhABC), and biochemical analysis (1) have revealed that it is a member of the DMSO reductase family of molybdenum enzymes and is closely related to respiratory nitrate reductase (NarGHI). Variable temperature X-band EPR spectra (120122 K) of purified heterotrimeric dimethyl sulfide dehydrogenase showed resonances arising from multiple redox centers, Mo(V), [3Fe-4S](+), [4Fe-4S](+), and a b-type heme. A pH-dependent EPR study of the Mo(V) center in (H2O)-H-1 and (H2O)-H-2 revealed the presence of three Mo(V) species in equilibrium, Mo(V)-OH2, Mo(v)-anion, and Mo(V)-OH. Above pH 8.2 the dominant species was Mo(V)-OH. The maximum specific activity occurred at pH 9.27. Comparison of the rhombicity and anisotropy parameters for the Mo(V) species in DMS dehydrogenase with other molybdenum enzymes of the DMSO reductase family showed that it was most similar to the low-pH nitrite spectrum of Escherichia coli nitrate reductase (NarGHI), consistent with previous sequence analysis of DdhA and NarG. A sequence comparison of DdhB and NarH has predicted the presence of four [Fe-S] clusters in DdhB. A [3Fe-4S](+) cluster was identified in dimethyl sulfide dehydrogenase whose properties resembled those of center 2 of NarH. A [4Fe-4S](+) cluster was also identified with unusual spin Hamiltonian parameters, suggesting that one of the iron atoms may have a fifth non-sulfur ligand. The g matrix for this cluster is very similar to that found for the minor conformation of center 1 in NarH [Guigliarelli, B., Asso, M., More, C., Augher, V., Blasco, F., Pommier, J., Giodano, G., and Bertrand, P. (1992) Eur. J. Biochem. 307,63-68]. Analysis of a ddhC mutant showed that this gene encodes the b-type cytochrome in dimethyl sulfide dehydrogenase. Magnetic circular dichroism studies revealed that the axial ligands to the iron in this cytochrome are a histidine and methionine, consistent with predictions from protein sequence analysis. Redox potentiometry showed that the b-type cytochrome has a high midpoint redox potential (E-o = +315 mV, pH 8).
