High fructose consumption is associated with obesity and characteristics of metabolic syndrome. This includes insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, type II diabetes and hepatic steatosis, the hepatic component of metabolic syndrome. Short term high fructose consumption in healthy humans is considered as a study model to increase intrahepatocellular lipids (IHCL). Protein supplementation added to a short term high fructose diet exerts a protective role on hepatic fat accumulation. Fructose disposal after an acute fructose load is well established. However, fructose disposal is usually studied when a high intake of fructose is ingested. Interaction of fructose with other macronutrients on fructose disposal is not clearly established. We wanted to assess how fructose disposal is modulated with nutritional factors. For the first study, we addressed the question of how would essential amino acid (EAA) supplemented to a high fructose diet have an impact on hepatic fat accumulation? We tried to distinguish which metabolic pathways were responsible for the increase in IHCL induced by high fructose intake and how those pathways would be modulated by EAA. After 6 days of hypercaloric high fructose diet, we observed, as expected an increase in IHCL modulated by an increase in VLDL-triglycerides and an increase in VLDL-13C-palmitate production. When adding a supplementation in EAA, we observed a decrease in IHCL but we could not define which mechanism was responsible for this process. With the second study, we were interested to observe fructose disposal after a test meal that contained lipid, protein and a physiologic dose of fructose co-ingested or not with glucose. When ingested with other macronutrients, hepatic fructose disposal is similar as when ingested as pure fructose. It induced oxidation, gluconeogenesis followed by glycogen synthesis, conversion into lactate and to a minor extent by de novo lipogenesis. When co- ingested with glucose decreased fructose oxidation as well as gluconeogenesis and an increased glycogen synthesis without affecting de novo lipogenesis or lactate. We were also able to observe induction of intestinal de novo lipogenesis with both fructose and fructose co- ingested with glucose. In summary, essential amino acids supplementation blunted increase in hepatic fat content induced by a short term chronic fructose overfeeding. However, EAA failed to improve other cardiovascular risk factors. Under isocaloric condition and in the frame of an acute test meal, physiologic dose of fructose associated with other macronutrients led to the same fructose disposal as when fructose is ingested alone. When co-ingested with glucose, we observed a decrease in fructose oxidation and gluconeogenesis as well as an increased in glycogen storage without affecting other metabolic pathways. - Une consommation élevée en fructose est associée à l'obésité et aux caractéristiques du syndrome métabolique. Ces dernières incluent une résistance à l'insuline, une dyslipidémie, un diabète de type II et la stéatose hépatique, composant hépatique du syndrome métabolique. À court terme une forte consommation en fructose chez l'homme sain est considérée comme un modèle d'étude pour augmenter la teneur en graisse hépatique. Une supplémentation en protéines ajoutée à une alimentation riche en fructose de courte durée a un effet protecteur sur l'accumulation des graisses au niveau du foie. Le métabolisme du fructose après une charge de fructose aiguë est bien établi. Toutefois, ce dernier est généralement étudié quand une consommation élevée de fructose est donnée. L'interaction du fructose avec d'autres macronutriments sur le métabolisme du fructose n'est pas connue. Nous voulions évaluer la modulation du métabolisme du fructose par des facteurs nutritionnels. Pour la première étude, nous avons abordé la question de savoir quel impact aurait une supplémentation en acides aminés essentiels (AEE) associé à une alimentation riche en fructose sur l'accumulation des graisses hépatiques. Nous avons essayé de distinguer les voies métaboliques responsables de l'augmentation des graisses hépatiques induite par l'alimentation riche en fructose et comment ces voies étaient modulées par les AEE. Après 6 jours d'une alimentation hypercalorique riche en fructose, nous avons observé, comme attendu, une augmentation des graisses hépatiques modulée par une augmentation des triglycérides-VLDL et une augmentation de la production de VLDL-13C-palmitate. Lors de la supplémentation en AEE, nous avons observé une diminution des graisses hépatiques mais les mécanismes responsables de ce processus n'ont pas pu être mis en évidence. Avec la seconde étude, nous nous sommes intéressés à observer le métabolisme du fructose après un repas test contenant des lipides, des protéines et une dose physiologique de fructose co-ingéré ou non avec du glucose. Lorsque le fructose était ingéré avec les autres macronutriments, le devenir hépatique du fructose était similaire à celui induit par du fructose pur. Il a induit une oxydation, suivie d'une néoglucogenèses, une synthèse de glycogène, une conversion en lactate et dans une moindre mesure une lipogenèse de novo. Lors de la co-ngestion avec du glucose, nous avons observé une diminution de l'oxydation du fructose et de la néoglucogenèse et une augmentation de la synthèse du glycogène, sans effet sur la lipogenèse de novo ni sur le lactate. Nous avons également pu mettre en évidence que le fructose et le fructose ingéré de façon conjointe avec du glucose ont induit une lipogenèse de novo au niveau de l'intestin. En résumé, la supplémentation en acides aminés essentiels a contrecarré l'augmentation de la teneur en graisse hépatique induite par une suralimentation en fructose sur le court terme. Cependant, la supplémentation en AEE a échoué à améliorer d'autres facteurs de risque cardiovasculaires. Dans la condition isocalorique et dans le cadre d'un repas test aiguë, la dose physiologique de fructose associée à d'autres macronutriments a conduit aux mêmes aboutissants du métabolisme du fructose que lorsque le fructose est ingéré seul. Lors de la co-ngestion avec le glucose, une diminution de l'oxydation du fructose est de la néoglucogenèse est observée en parallèle à une augmentation de la synthèse de glycogène sans affecter les autres voies métaboliques.

Este estudio analiza los patrones de consumo de alcohol y el papel de la influencia social y la percepción de peligrosidad de esta sustancia en dicho consumo en una muestra de 1.624 estudiantes de Secundaria de Girona con edades comprendidas entre los 12 y los 18 años (49,4% chicos). Losresultados muestran que un 20,9% de los adolescentes se consideran consumidores habituales de alcohol, y que el consumo se incrementa con la edad, independientemente del género. Un porcentaje elevado de consumidores supera el umbral de alto riesgo para la salud, principalmente entre las chicas debido a las diferencias de género en la metabolización alcohólica. Asimismo se confirma la influencia del entorno (amigos y familiares) y de la percepción de peligrosidad del alcohol tanto en el consumo de esta sustancia como en su uso de alto riesgo. In this paper we explore the sectoral and aggregate implications of some endogeneization rules (i.e. on value-added and final demand) which have been common in the Leontief model and have been recently proposed in the Ghosh model. We detect that these rules may give rise in both models to some allegedly pathological behavior in the sense that sectoral or aggregate output, very often, may not follow the logical and economically expected direct relationship with some underlying endogenous variables—namely, output and value-added in the Ghosh model and output and consumption in the Leontief model. Because of the common mathematical structure, whatever is or seems to be pathological in the Ghosh model also has a symmetric counterpart in the Leontief model. These would not be good news for the inner consistency of these linear models. To avoid such possible inconsistencies, we propose new and simple endogeneization rules that have a sound economic interpretation.

Cannabis use has increased considerably during the last 15 years. One of the major problems dealing with cannabis use is driving under the influence of drugs. With the exception of ethyl alcohol, the majority of the epidemiological studies have shown that cannabis is the most frequently detected substance in people suspected of driving under the influence of drugs. Experimental studies are therefore needed to assess cannabis effects on driving capability. Many studies indicate that cannabis impairs psychomotor performance. This impairment becomes obvious when high doses of cannabis are taken, when ethyl alcohol or other drugs are simultaneously ingested, or when sustained attention is needed. Moreover, cannabis effects are qualitatively different from those observed after ethyl alcohol consumption. In forensic practice, cannabis impairment of driving performance must be related to cannabinoids blood concentrations. To facilitate the interpretation of cannabinoids blood levels, several models were set up recently. These models must be further improved in order to fit in with all circumstances of cannabis use.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The assumption that fructose may be toxic and involved in the pathogenesis of noncommunicable diseases such as obesity, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and even cancer has resulted in the call for public health action, such as introducing taxes on sweetened beverages. This review evaluates the scientific basis for such action. RECENT FINDINGS: Although some studies hint towards some potential adverse effects of excessive fructose consumption especially when combined with excess energy intake, the results from clinical trials do not support a significant detrimental effect of fructose on metabolic health when consumed as part of a weight-maintaining diet in amounts consistent with the average-estimated fructose consumption in Western countries. However, definitive studies are missing. SUMMARY: Public health policies to eliminate or limit fructose in the diet should be considered premature. Instead, efforts should be made to promote a healthy lifestyle that includes physical activity and nutritious foods while avoiding intake of excess calories until solid evidence to support action against fructose is available. Public health is almost certainly to benefit more from policies that are aimed at promoting what is known to be good than from policies that are prohibiting what is not (yet) known to be bad.

Catalunya és un país energèticament dependent d'altres països. A part d'això, la seva producció i el seu consum d'energia provenen de fonts no renovables. Catalunya queda molt lluny de la majoria de països europeus els quals tenen un desenvolupament molt avançat en quan l'explotació de les energies renovables. Segons estudis de l'IDAE i l'ICAEN a les llars espanyoles i catalanes, al voltant d'un 25% del consum d'energia és per part d'electrodomèstics i d'il·luminació. El present treball estima el consum energètic dels pisos a la Vila Universitària 1 i fer una proposta de reducció de consum per mitjà d'un canvi d'electrodomèstics. Aquesta proposta ha estat efectiva ja que el consum estimat es redueix un 50% aproximadament canviant alguns dels electrodomèstics que hi ha actualment per altres de més eficients. Alhora, s'ha dut a terme un concurs d'estalvi energètic juntament amb una campanya de sensibilització de la mateixa temàtica que també busca la disminució del consum energètic en els pisos i, resulta ser quelcom efectiu donat que hi ha hagut una reducció d'un 32% aproximadament en mitjana del consum energètic als pisos. Sembla ser molt important la conscienciació de la gent ja que permet reduir el consum energètic amb un cost econòmic zero.

Introduction: Since 2004, cannabis is prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) for all sports in competition. In the years since then, about half of all positive doping cases in Switzerland have been related to cannabis consumption. In most cases, the athletes plausibly claim to have consumed cannabis several days or even weeks before competition and only for recreational purposes not related to competition. In doping analysis, the target analyte in urine samples is 11-nor-delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol- 9-carboxylic acid (THC-COOH), the reporting threshold for laboratories is 15 ng/mL. However, the wide detection window of this long-term THC metabolite in urine does not allow a conclusion concerning the time of consumption or the impact on the physical performance. Aim: The purpose of the present pharmacokinetic study on volunteers was to evaluate target analytes with shorter urinary excretion time. Subsequently, urines from athletes tested positive for cannabis should be reanalyzed including these analytes. Methods: In an one-session clinical trial (approved by IRB, Swissmedic, and Federal Office of Public Health), 12 healthy, male volunteers (age 26 ± 3 yrs, BMI 24 ± 2 kg/m2) with cannabis experience (> once/month) smoked a Cannabis cigarette standardized to 70 mg THC/cigarette (Bedrobinol® 7%, Dutch Office for Medicinal Cannabis) following a paced-puffing procedure. Plasma and urine was collected up to 8 h and 11 days, respectively. Total THC, 11-hydroxy-THC (THC-OH), and THC-COOH were determined after enzymatic hydrolyzation followed by SPE and GC/MS-SIM. The limit of quantitation (LOQ) for all analytes was 0.1 ng/mL. Visual analog scales (VAS) and vital functions were used for monitoring psychological and somatic side-effects at every timepoint of specimen collection (up to 480 min). Results: Eight puffs delivered a mean THC dose of 45 mg. Mean plasma levels of total THC, THC-OH and THC-COOH were measured in the range of 0.1-20.9, 0.1-1.8, and 1.8-7.5 ng/mL, respectively. Peak concentrations were observed at 5, 10, and 90 min. Mean urine levels were measured in the range of 0.1-0.7, 0.10-6.2, and 0.1-13.4 ng/mL, respectively. The detection windows were 2-8, 2-96, and 2-120 h. No or only mild effects were observed, such as dry mouth, sedation, and tachycardia. Besides high to very high THC-COOH levels (0-978 ng/mL), THC (0.1-24 ng/mL) and THC-OH (1-234 ng/mL) were found in 90 and 96% of the cannabis-positive urines from athletes. Conclusion: Instead of or in addition to THC-COOH, the pharmacologically active THC and THC-OH should be the target analytes for doping urine analysis. This would allow the estimation of more recent Cannabis consumption, probably influencing performance during competition. The ongoing growth of corn-based ethanol production raises some fundamental questions about what impact continued growth will have on U.S. and world agriculture. Estimates of the long-run potential for ethanol production can be made by calculating the corn price at which the incentive to expand ethanol production disappears. Under current ethanol tax policy, if the prices of crude oil, natural gas, and distillers grains stay at current levels, then the break-even corn price is $4.05 per bushel. A multi-commodity, multi country system of integrated commodity models is used to estimate the impacts if we ever get to $4.05 corn. At this price, corn-based ethanol production would reach 31.5 billion gallons per year, or about 20% of projected U.S. fuel consumption in 2015. Supporting this level of production would require 95.6 million acres of corn to be planted. Total corn production would be approximately 15.6 billion bushels, compared to 11.0 billion bushels today. Most of the additional corn acres come from reduced soybean acreage. Wheat markets would adjust to fulfill increased demand for feed wheat. Corn exports and production of pork and poultry would all be reduced in response to higher corn prices and increased utilization of corn by ethanol plants. These results should not be viewed as a prediction of what will eventually materialize. Rather, they indicate a logical end point to the current incentives to invest in corn-based ethanol plants.

Cardiac morphogenesis and function are known to depend on both aerobic and anaerobic energy-producing pathways. However, the relative contribution of mitochondrial oxidation and glycogenolysis, as well as the determining factors of oxygen demand in the distinct chambers of the embryonic heart, remains to be investigated. Spontaneously beating hearts isolated from stage 11, 20, and 24HH chick embryos were maintained in vitro under controlled metabolic conditions. O(2) uptake and glycogenolytic rate were determined in atrium, ventricle, and conotruncus in the absence or presence of glucose. Oxidative capacity ranged from 0.2 to 0.5 nmol O(2)/(h.microg protein), did not depend on exogenous glucose, and was the highest in atria at stage 20HH. However, the highest reserves of oxidative capacity, assessed by mitochondrial uncoupling, were found at the youngest stage and in conotruncus, representing 75 to 130% of the control values. At stage 24HH, glycogenolysis in glucose-free medium was 0.22, 0.17, and 0.04 nmol glucose U(h.microg protein) in atrium, ventricle, and conotruncus, respectively. Mechanical loading of the ventricle increased its oxidative capacity by 62% without altering glycogenolysis or lactate production. Blockade of glycolysis by iodoacetate suppressed lactate production but modified neither O(2) nor glycogen consumption in substrate-free medium. These findings indicate that atrium is the cardiac chamber that best utilizes its oxidative and glycogenolytic capacities and that ventricular wall stretch represents an early and major determinant of the O(2) uptake. Moreover, the fact that O(2) and glycogen consumptions were not affected by inhibition of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase provides indirect evidence for an active glycerol-phosphate shuttle in the embryonic cardiomyocytes.

For many goods (such as experience goods or addictive goods), consumers preferences may change over time. In this paper, we examine a monopolist s optimal pricing schedule when current consumption can affect a consumer s valuation in the future and valuations are unobservable. We assume that consumers are anonymous, i.e. the monopolist can t observe a consumer s past consumption history. For myopic consumers, the optimal consumption schedule is distorted upwards, involving substantial discounts for low valuation types. This pushes low types into higher valuations, from which rents can be extracted.For forward looking consumers, there may be a further upward distortion of consumption due to a reversal of the adverse selection effect; low valuation consumers now have a strong interest in consumption in order to increase their valuations. Firms will find it profitable to educate consumers and encourage forward looking behavior.
