PURPOSE: To evaluate gadocoletic acid (B-22956), a gadolinium-based paramagnetic blood pool agent, for contrast-enhanced coronary magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) in a Phase I clinical trial, and to compare the findings with those obtained using a standard noncontrast T2 preparation sequence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The left coronary system was imaged in 12 healthy volunteers before B-22956 application and 5 (N = 11) and 45 (N = 7) minutes after application of 0.075 mmol/kg of body weight (BW) of B-22956. Additionally, imaging of the right coronary system was performed 23 minutes after B-22956 application (N = 6). A three-dimensional gradient echo sequence with T2 preparation (precontrast) or inversion recovery (IR) pulse (postcontrast) with real-time navigator correction was used. Assessment of the left and right coronary systems was performed qualitatively (a 4-point visual score for image quality) and quantitatively in terms of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), vessel sharpness, visible vessel length, maximal luminal diameter, and the number of visible side branches. RESULTS: Significant (P < 0.01) increases in SNR (+42%) and CNR (+86%) were noted five minutes after B-22956 application, compared to precontrast T2 preparation values. A significant increase in CNR (+40%, P < 0.05) was also noted 45 minutes postcontrast. Vessels (left anterior descending artery (LAD), left coronary circumflex (LCx), and right coronary artery (RCA)) were also significantly (P < 0.05) sharper on postcontrast images. Significant increases in vessel length were noted for the LAD (P < 0.05) and LCx and RCA (both P < 0.01), while significantly more side branches were noted for the LAD and RCA (both P < 0.05) when compared to precontrast T2 preparation values. CONCLUSION: The use of the intravascular contrast agent B-22956 substantially improves both objective and subjective parameters of image quality on high-resolution three-dimensional coronary MRA. The increase in SNR, CNR, and vessel sharpness minimizes current limitations of coronary artery visualization with high-resolution coronary MRA.

PURPOSE: To prospectively compare various parameters of vessels imaged at 3 T by using time-of-flight (TOF) and T2-prepared magnetic resonance (MR) angiography in a rabbit model of hind limb ischemia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Experiments were approved by the institutional animal care and use committee. Endovascular occlusion of the left superficial femoral artery was induced in 14 New Zealand white rabbits. After 2 weeks, MR angiography and conventional (x-ray) angiography were performed. Vessel sharpness was evaluated visually in the ischemic and nonischemic limbs, and the presence of small collateral vessels was evaluated in the ischemic limbs. Vessel sharpness was also quantified by evaluating the magnitude of signal intensity change at the vessel borders. RESULTS: The sharpness of vessels in the nonischemic limbs was similar between the TOF and the T2-prepared images. In the ischemic limbs, however, T2-prepared imaging, as compared with TOF imaging, generated higher vessel sharpness in arteries with diminished blood flow (mean vessel sharpness: 44% vs 30% for popliteal arteries, 45% vs 28% for saphenous arteries; P < .001 for both comparisons) and enabled better detection of small collateral vessels (93% vs 36% of vessels, P < .001). CONCLUSION: T2-prepared imaging can facilitate high-spatial-resolution MR angiography of small vessels with low blood flow and thus has potential as a tool for noninvasive evaluation of arteriogenic therapies, without use of contrast material. OBJECTIVE: Gadolinium-enhanced pulmonary magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) can be an option in patients with a history of previous adverse reaction to iodinated contrast material and renal insufficiency. Radiation is also avoided. The aim of this study is to prospectively compare the diagnostic value of MRA with that of a diagnostic strategy, taking into account catheter angiography, computed tomography angiography (CTA), and lung scintigraphy [ventilation-perfusion (VQ)]. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Magnetic resonance angiography was done in 48 patients with clinically suspected pulmonary embolism (PE) using fast gradient echo coronal acquisition with gadolinium. Interpretation was done with native coronal images and multiplanar maximum intensity projection reconstructions. Results were compared to catheter angiography (n=15), CTA (n=34), VQ (n=45), as well as 6-12 months clinical follow-ups, according to a sequenced reference tree. RESULTS: The final diagnosis of PE was retained in 11 patients (23%). There were two false negatives and no false positive results with MRA. Computed tomography angiography resulted in no false negatives or false positives. Magnetic resonance angiography had a sensitivity of 82% and a specificity of 100%. CONCLUSION: In our study, pulmonary MRA had a sensitivity of 82% and a specificity of 100% for the diagnosis of PE, with slightly less sensitivity than CTA. In the diagnostic algorithm of PE, pulmonary MRA should be considered as an alternative to CTA when iodine contrast injection or radiation is a significant matter.

Assessment of image quality for digital x-ray mammography systems used in European screening programs relies mainly on contrast-detail CDMAM phantom scoring and requires the acquisition and analysis of many images in order to reduce variability in threshold detectability. Part II of this study proposes an alternative method based on the detectability index (d') calculated for a non-prewhitened model observer with an eye filter (NPWE). The detectability index was calculated from the normalized noise power spectrum and image contrast, both measured from an image of a 5 cm poly(methyl methacrylate) phantom containing a 0.2 mm thick aluminium square, and the pre-sampling modulation transfer function. This was performed as a function of air kerma at the detector for 11 different digital mammography systems. These calculated d' values were compared against threshold gold thickness (T) results measured with the CDMAM test object and against derived theoretical relationships. A simple relationship was found between T and d', as a function of detector air kerma; a linear relationship was found between d' and contrast-to-noise ratio. The values of threshold thickness used to specify acceptable performance in the European Guidelines for 0.10 and 0.25 mm diameter discs were equivalent to threshold calculated detectability indices of 1.05 and 6.30, respectively. The NPWE method is a validated alternative to CDMAM scoring for use in the image quality specification, quality control and optimization of digital x-ray systems for screening mammography.

Turtle Mountain in Alberta, Canada has become an important field laboratory for testing different techniques related to the characterization and monitoring of large slope mass movements as the stability of large portions of the eastern face of the mountain is still questionable. In order to better quantify the volumes potentially unstable and the most probable failure mechanisms and potential consequences, structural analysis and runout modeling were preformed. The structural features of the eastern face were investigated using a high resolution digital elevation model (HRDEM). According to displacement datasets and structural observations, potential failure mechanisms affecting different portions of the mountain have been assessed. The volumes of the different potentially unstable blocks have been calculated using the Sloping Local Base Level (SLBL) method. Based on the volume estimation, two and three dimensional dynamic runout analyses have been performed. Calibration of this analysis is based on the experience from the adjacent Frank Slide and other similar rock avalanches. The results will be used to improve the contingency plans within the hazard area.

Purpose: Atheromatic plaque progression is affected, among others phenomena, by biomechanical, biochemical, and physiological factors. In this paper, the authors introduce a novel framework able to provide both morphological (vessel radius, plaque thickness, and type) and biomechanical (wall shear stress and Von Mises stress) indices of coronary arteries. Methods: First, the approach reconstructs the three-dimensional morphology of the vessel from intravascular ultrasound(IVUS) and Angiographic sequences, requiring minimal user interaction. Then, a computational pipeline allows to automatically assess fluid-dynamic and mechanical indices. Ten coronary arteries are analyzed illustrating the capabilities of the tool and confirming previous technical and clinical observations. Results: The relations between the arterial indices obtained by IVUS measurement and simulations have been quantitatively analyzed along the whole surface of the artery, extending the analysis of the coronary arteries shown in previous state of the art studies. Additionally, for the first time in the literature, the framework allows the computation of the membrane stresses using a simplified mechanical model of the arterial wall. Conclusions: Circumferentially (within a given frame), statistical analysis shows an inverse relation between the wall shear stress and the plaque thickness. At the global level (comparing a frame within the entire vessel), it is observed that heavy plaque accumulations are in general calcified and are located in the areas of the vessel having high wall shear stress. Finally, in their experiments the inverse proportionality between fluid and structural stresses is observed.

In our capacity as creative artists, researchers and fine arts professors, most part of our activity focuses on the relationships between people and creativity, technology, and resources, and, most frequently, what we aim to offer are new enjoyable and subversive ways of interacting with these three fields. As art teachers, we ask 'why and how' to teach dynamic bearing in mind that digital technology will undoubtedly impact on contemporary art practice.
