We consider a simple model consisting of particles with four bonding sites ("patches"), two of type A and two of type B, on the square lattice, and investigate its global phase behavior by simulations and theory. We set the interaction between B patches to zero and calculate the phase diagram as the ratio between the AB and the AA interactions, epsilon(AB)*, varies. In line with previous work, on three-dimensional off-lattice models, we show that the liquid-vapor phase diagram exhibits a re-entrant or "pinched" shape for the same range of epsilon(AB)*, suggesting that the ratio of the energy scales - and the corresponding empty fluid regime - is independent of the dimensionality of the system and of the lattice structure. In addition, the model exhibits an order-disorder transition that is ferromagnetic in the re-entrant regime. The use of low-dimensional lattice models allows the simulation of sufficiently large systems to establish the nature of the liquid-vapor critical points and to describe the structure of the liquid phase in the empty fluid regime, where the size of the "voids" increases as the temperature decreases. We have found that the liquid-vapor critical point is in the 2D Ising universality class, with a scaling region that decreases rapidly as the temperature decreases. The results of simulations and theoretical analysis suggest that the line of order-disorder transitions intersects the condensation line at a multi-critical point at zero temperature and density, for patchy particle models with a re-entrant, empty fluid, regime. In this work is proposed the design of a system to create and handle Electric Vehicles (EV) charging procedures, based on intelligent process. Due to the electrical power distribution network limitation and absence of smart meter devices, Electric Vehicles charging should be performed in a balanced way, taking into account past experience, weather information based on data mining, and simulation approaches. In order to allow information exchange and to help user mobility, it was also created a mobile application to assist the EV driver on these processes. This proposed Smart ElectricVehicle Charging System uses Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology, in order to connect Electric Vehicles and also renewable energy sources to Smart Grids (SG). This system also explores the new paradigm of Electrical Markets (EM), with deregulation of electricity production and use, in order to obtain the best conditions for commercializing electrical energy.

Many of the most common human functions such as temporal and non-monotonic reasoning have not yet been fully mapped in developed systems, even though some theoretical breakthroughs have already been accomplished. This is mainly due to the inherent computational complexity of the theoretical approaches. In the particular area of fault diagnosis in power systems however, some systems which tried to solve the problem, have been deployed using methodologies such as production rule based expert systems, neural networks, recognition of chronicles, fuzzy expert systems, etc. SPARSE (from the Portuguese acronym, which means expert system for incident analysis and restoration support) was one of the developed systems and, in the sequence of its development, came the need to cope with incomplete and/or incorrect information as well as the traditional problems for power systems fault diagnosis based on SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) information retrieval, namely real-time operation, huge amounts of information, etc. This paper presents an architecture for a decision support system, which can solve the presented problems, using a symbiosis of the event calculus and the default reasoning rule based system paradigms, insuring soft real-time operation with incomplete, incorrect or domain incoherent information handling ability. A prototype implementation of this system is already at work in the control centre of the Portuguese Transmission Network.

Hybridization of intelligent systems is a promising research field of computational intelligence focusing on combinations of multiple approaches to develop the next generation of intelligent systems. In this paper we will model a Manufacturing System by means of Multi-Agent Systems and Meta-Heuristics technologies, where each agent may represent a processing entity (machine). The objective of the system is to deal with the complex problem of Dynamic Scheduling in Manufacturing Systems.

Emotion although being an important factor in our every day life it is many times forgotten in the development of systems to be used by persons. In this work we present an architecture for a ubiquitous group decision support system able to support persons in group decision processes. The system considers the emotional factors of the intervenient participants, as well as the argumentation between them. Particular attention will be taken to one of components of this system: the multi-agent simulator, modeling the human participants, considering emotional characteristics, and allowing the exchanges of hypothetic arguments among the participants.

Dynamical systems modeling tumor growth have been investigated to determine the dynamics between tumor and healthy cells. Recent theoretical investigations indicate that these interactions may lead to different dynamical outcomes, in particular to homoclinic chaos. In the present study, we analyze both topological and dynamical properties of a recently characterized chaotic attractor governing the dynamics of tumor cells interacting with healthy tissue cells and effector cells of the immune system. By using the theory of symbolic dynamics, we first characterize the topological entropy and the parameter space ordering of kneading sequences from one-dimensional iterated maps identified in the dynamics, focusing on the effects of inactivation interactions between both effector and tumor cells. The previous analyses are complemented with the computation of the spectrum of Lyapunov exponents, the fractal dimension and the predictability of the chaotic attractors. Our results show that the inactivation rate of effector cells by the tumor cells has an important effect on the dynamics of the system. The increase of effector cells inactivation involves an inverse Feigenbaum (i.e. period-halving bifurcation) scenario, which results in the stabilization of the dynamics and in an increase of dynamics predictability. Our analyses also reveal that, at low inactivation rates of effector cells, tumor cells undergo strong, chaotic fluctuations, with the dynamics being highly unpredictable. Our findings are discussed in the context of tumor cells potential viability.

Water-based cellulose cholesteric liquid crystalline phases at rest can undergo structural changes induced by shear flow. This reflects on the deuterium spectra recorded when the system is investigated by rheo-nuclear magnetic resonance (rheo-NMR) techniques. In this work, the model system hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC)+water is revisited using rheo-NMR to clarify unsettled points regarding its behavior under shear and in relaxation. The NMR spectra allow the identification of five different stable ordering states, within shear and relaxation, which are well integrated in a mesoscopic picture of the system's structural evolution under shear and relaxation. This picture emerging from the large body of studies available for this system by other experimental techniques, accounts well for the NMR data and is in good agreement with the three distinct regions of steady shear flow recognized for some lyotropic LC polymers. Shear rates in between 0.1 and 1.0 s(-1) where investigated using a Taylor-Couette flow and deuterated water was used as solvent for the deuterium NMR (DNMR) analysis.

We investigate the phase behaviour of 2D mixtures of bi-functional and three-functional patchy particles and 3D mixtures of bi-functional and tetra-functional patchy particles by means of Monte Carlo simulations and Wertheim theory. We start by computing the critical points of the pure systems and then we investigate how the critical parameters change upon lowering the temperature. We extend the successive umbrella sampling method to mixtures to make it possible to extract information about the phase behaviour of the system at a fixed temperature for the whole range of densities and compositions of interest. Objective - To describe and validate the simulation of the basic features of GE Millennium MG gamma camera using the GATE Monte Carlo platform. Material and methods - Crystal size and thickness, parallel-hole collimation and a realistic energy acquisition window were simulated in the GATE platform. GATE results were compared to experimental data in the following imaging conditions: a point source of 99mTc at different positions during static imaging and tomographic acquisitions using two different energy windows. The accuracy between the events expected and detected by simulation was obtained with the Mann–Whitney–Wilcoxon test. Comparisons were made regarding the measurement of sensitivity and spatial resolution, static and tomographic. Simulated and experimental spatial resolutions for tomographic data were compared with the Kruskal–Wallis test to assess simulation accuracy for this parameter. Results - There was good agreement between simulated and experimental data. The number of decays expected when compared with the number of decays registered, showed small deviation (≤0.007%). The sensitivity comparisons between static acquisitions for different distances from source to collimator (1, 5, 10, 20, 30cm) with energy windows of 126–154 keV and 130–158 keV showed differences of 4.4%, 5.5%, 4.2%, 5.5%, 4.5% and 5.4%, 6.3%, 6.3%, 5.8%, 5.3%, respectively. For the tomographic acquisitions, the mean differences were 7.5% and 9.8% for the energy window 126–154 keV and 130–158 keV. Comparison of simulated and experimental spatial resolutions for tomographic data showed no statistically significant differences with 95% confidence interval. Conclusions - Adequate simulation of the system basic features using GATE Monte Carlo simulation platform was achieved and validated.

On this work we suggest a teaching solution that can be implemented in Azores, an archipelago of nine islands of Portugal, based in already known system of e-learning, with a twist based on the flipped method. Structured in a cooperative way, the organization of the system allows to isolated groups of people to have access to a certain level of teaching, if they cannot have the possibility to have physical presence in school due to problems emerging from territory discontinuity. Our suggestion can be elaborate in a model that can be adapted to any level of education, and can be adapted also in cases that a cut of budget exists. We suggest the name of fb-learning: Flipped Broadcast Learning.

Actualmente, os sistemas embebidos estão presentes em toda a parte. Embora grande parte da população que os utiliza não tenha a noção da sua presença, na realidade, se repentinamente estes sistemas deixassem de existir, a sociedade iria sentir a sua falta. A sua utilização massiva deve-se ao facto de estarem practicamente incorporados em quase os todos dispositivos electrónicos de consumo, telecomunicações, automação industrial e automóvel. Influenciada por este crescimento, a comunidade científica foi confrontada com novos problemas distribuídos por vários domínios científicos, dos quais são destacados a gestão da qualidade de serviço e gestão de recursos - domínio encarregue de resolver problemas relacionados com a alocação óptima de recursos físicos, tais como rede, memória e CPU. Existe na literatura um vasto conjunto de modelos que propõem soluções para vários problemas apresentados no contexto destes domínios científicos. No entanto, não é possível encontrar modelos que lidem com a gestão de recursos em ambientes de execução cooperativos e abertos com restrições temporais utilizando coligações entre diferentes nós, de forma a satisfazer os requisitos não funcionais das aplicações. Devido ao facto de estes sistemas serem dinâmicos por natureza, apresentam a característica de não ser possível conhecer, a priori, a quantidade de recursos necessários que uma aplicação irá requerer do sistema no qual irá ser executada. Este conhecimento só é adquirido aquando da execução da aplicação. De modo a garantir uma gestão eficiente dos recursos disponíveis, em sistemas que apresentam um grande dinamismo na execução de tarefas com e sem restrições temporais, é necessário garantir dois aspectos fundamentais. O primeiro está relacionado com a obtenção de garantias na execução de tarefas de tempo-real. Estas devem sempre ser executadas dentro da janela temporal requirida. O segundo aspecto refere a necessidade de garantir que todos os recursos necessários à execução das tarefas são fornecidos, com o objectivo de manter os níveis de performance quer das aplicações, quer do próprio sistema. Tendo em conta os dois aspectos acima mencionados, o projecto CooperatES foi especificado com o objectivo de permitir a dispositivos com poucos recursos uma execução colectiva de serviços com os seus vizinhos, de modo a cumprir com as complexas restrições de qualidade de serviço impostas pelos utilizadores ou pelas aplicações. Decorrendo no contexto do projecto CooperatES, o trabalho resultante desta tese tem como principal objectivo avaliar a practicabilidade dos conceitos principais propostos no âmbito do projecto. O trabalho em causa implicou a escolha e análise de uma plataforma, a análise de requisitos, a implementação e avaliação de uma framework que permite a execução cooperativa de aplicações e serviços que apresentem requisitos de qualidade de serviço. Do trabalho desenvolvido resultaram as seguintes contribuições: Análise das plataformas de código aberto que possam ser utilizadas na implementação dos conceitos relacionados com o projecto CooperatES; Critérios que influenciaram a escolha da plataforma Android e um estudo focado na análise da plataforma sob uma perspectiva de sistemas de tempo-real; Experiências na implementação dos conceitos do projecto na plataforma Android; Avaliação da practicabilidade dos conceitos propostos no projecto CooperatES; Proposta de extensões que permitam incorporar características de sistemas de tempo real abertos na plataforma Android.

O desenvolvimento de sistemas de localização pedestre com recurso a técnicas de dead reckoning tem mostrado ser uma área em expansão no mundo académico e não só. Existem algumas soluções criadas, no entanto, nem todas as soluções serão facilmente implementadas no mercado, quer seja pelo hardware caro, ou pelo sistema em si, que é desenvolvido tendo em conta um cenário em particular. INPERLYS é um sistema que visa apresentar uma solução de localização pedestre, independentemente do cenário, utilizando recursos que poderão ser facilmente usados. Trata-se de um sistema que utiliza uma técnica de dead reckonig para dar a localização do utilizador. Em cenários outdoor, um receptor GPS fornece a posição do utilizador, fornecendo uma posição absoluta ao sistema. Quando não é possível utilizar o GPS, recorre-se a um sensor MEMS e a uma bússola para se obter posições relativas à última posição válida do GPS. Para interligar todos os sensores foi utilizado o protocolo de comunicações sem fios ZigBee™. A escolha recaiu neste protocolo devido a factores como os seus baixos consumos e o seu baixo custo. Assim o sistema torna-se de uso fácil e confortável para o utilizador, ao contrário de sistemas similares desenvolvidos, que utilizam cabos para interligarem os diferentes componentes do sistema. O sensor MEMS do tipo acelerómetro tem a função de ler a aceleração horizontal, ao nível do pé. Esta aceleração será usada por um algoritmo de reconhecimento do padrão das acelerações para se detectar os passos dados. Após a detecção do passo, a aceleração máxima registada nesse passo é fornecida ao coordenador, para se obter o deslocamento efectuado. Foram efectuados alguns testes para se perceber a eficiência do INPERLYS. Os testes decorreram num percurso plano, efectuados a uma velocidade normal e com passadas normais. Verificou-se que, neste momento, o desempenho do sistema poderá ser melhorado, quer seja a nível de gestão das comunicações, quer a nível do reconhecimento do padrão da aceleração horizontal, essencial para se detectar os passos. No entanto o sistema é capaz de fornecer a posição através do GPS, quando é possível a sua utilização, e é capaz de fornecer a orientação do movimento.
