Blends of synthetic and biodegradable polymers can be important in attaining material plastic degradation in the environment. Biodegradation using soil and chorume (liquid waste from landfill) microorganisms is a promising area these days. This paper intends to study the PVC/PCL blend degradation in soil using aerobic biodegradation (Bartha respirometer). The morphology and structural changes of the blends were studied by FTIR, scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and contact angle measurements. Blend films prepared by the casting of dichloroethane solutions were buried in a Bartha respirometer containing soil and soil plus chorume and kept there for 120 days. During this time CO2 evolution was measured from time to time. The results showed that PCL films degrade faster than PVC/PCL and PVC films.

Films of poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) and poly(propylene) (PP), PP/PHBV (4:1), blends were prepared by melt-pressing and investigated with respect to their microbial degradation in soil after 120 days. Biodegradation of the films was evaluated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction. The biodegradation and/or bioerosion of the PP/PHBV blend was attributed to microbiological attack, with major changes occurring at the interphases of the homopolymers. The PHBV film was more strongly biodegraded in soil, decomposing completely in 30 days, while PP film presented changes in amorphous and interface phase, which affected the morphology.

The effect of UV-C irradiation of the TPS and PCL biocomposites with sisal bleached fibers was investigated. The biocomposite was UV-C irradiated at room temperature under air atmosphere. The structural and morphological changes produced when the films were exposed to UV irradiation for 142 h, were monitored using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Mechanical Tensile Tests, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction, Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Fourier transform infra-red analysis (FTIR). Addition of 5-10% fibers in composites exhibited improved mechanical and thermal properties attributed to more efficient dispersibility of fiber in the matrix and good compatibility between fibers and the matrix polymer, however, after irradiated, the tensile properties decreased due to chain scission. The samples of irradiated PCL and IFS showed crystallinity increase, whereas the blend and composites showed a decrease in crystallinity. The DSC and X-ray diffraction studies suggested interaction between polymers in the blend via carboxyl groups in thermoplastic starch-PCL and hydroxyl groups in fibers. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-valerate) (PHBV) and poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) PCL/PHBV (4:1) blend films were prepared by melt-pressing. The biodegradation of the films in response to burial in soil for 30 days was investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TG). The PHBV film was the most susceptible to microbial attack, since it was rapidly biodegraded via surface erosion in 15 days and completely degraded in 30 days. The PCL film also degraded but more slowly than PHBV. The degradation of the PCL/PHBV blend occurred in the PHBV phase, inducing changes in the PCL phases (interphase) and resulting in an increase of its crystalline fraction.

The vesicle-micelle transition in aqueous mixtures of dioctadecyidimethylammonium and octadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DODAB and C(18)TAB) cationic surfactants, having respectively double and single chain, was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSQ, steady-state fluorescence, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and surface tension. The experiments performed at constant total surfactant concentration, up to 1.0 mM, reveal that these homologous surfactants mix together to form mixed vesicles and/or micelles, depending on the relative amount of the surfactants. The melting temperature T-m of the mixed DODAB-C(18)TAB vesicles is larger than that for the neat DODAB in water owing to the incorporation of C(18)TAB in the vesicle bilayer. The surface tension decreases sigmoidally with C(18)TAB concentration and the inflection point lies around (XDODAB) approximate to 0.4, indicating the onset of micelle formation owing to saturation of DODAB vesicles by C(18)TAB molecules. When XDODAB > 0.5 C(18)TAB molecules are mainly solubilised by the vesicles, but when XDODAB < 0.25 micelles are dominant. Fluorescence data of the Nile Red probe incorporated in the system at different surfactant molar fractions indicate the formation of micelle and vesicle structures. These structures have apparent hydrodynamic radius RH of about 180 and 500-800 nm, respectively, as obtained by DLS measurements. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We have investigated the effect of mixing spontaneously formed dispersions of the cationic vesicle-forming dioctadecyldimethylammonium chloride and bromide (DODAX, with X being anions Cl- (C) or Br- (B)) with solutions of the micelle-forming nonionic ethylene oxide surfactants penta-, hepta-, and octaethyleneglycol mono-n-dodecyl ether, C12En (n = 5, 7, and 8), and the zwitterionic 3-(N-hexadecyl-N,N-dimethylammonio)propane sulfonate (HPS). We used for this purpose differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), turbidity, and steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy to investigate the vesicle-micelle (V-M) transition yielded by adding C12En and HPS to 1.0 mM vesicle dispersions of DODAC and DODAB. The addition of these surfactants lowers the gel-to-liquid crystalline phase transition temperature (T-m) of DODAC and DODAB, and the transition becomes less cooperative, that is, the thermogram transition peak shifts to lower temperature and broadens to disappear when the V-M transition is complete, the vesicle bilayer becomes less organized, and the T., decreases, in agreement with measurements of the fluorescence quantum yield of trans-diphenylpolyene (t-DPO) fluorescence molecules incorporated in the vesicle bilayer. Turbidity data indicate that the V-M transition comes about in three stages: first surfactants are solubilized into the vesicle bilayer; after saturation, the vesicles are ruptured, and, finally, the vesicles are completely solubilized and only mixed micelles are formed. The critical points of bilayer saturation and vesicle solubilization were obtained from the turbidity and fluorescence curves, and are reported in this communication. The solubility of DODAX is stronger for C12En than it is for HPS, meaning that C12En solubilizes DODAX more efficiently than does HPS. The surfactant solubilization depends slightly on the counterion, and varies according to the sequence C12E5 > C12E7 > C12E8 > HPS.

Mixtures of dioctadecyldimethylammonium chloride (DODAC) cationic vesicle dispersions with aqueous micelle solutions of the anionic sodium cholate (NaC) were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, DSC, turbidity and light scattering. Within the concentration range investigated (constant 1.0 mM DODAC and varying NaC concentration up to 4 mM), vesicle -> micelle -> aggregate transitions were observed. The turbidity of DODAC/NaC/water depends on time and NaC/DODAB molar concentration ratio R. At equilibrium, turbidity initially decreases smoothly with R to a low value (owing to the vesicle-micelle transition) when R = 0.5-0.8 and then increases steeply to a high value (owing to the micelle-aggregate transition) when R = 0.9-1.0. DSC thermograms exhibit a single and sharp endothermic peak at T-m approximate to 49 degrees C, characteristic of the melting temperature of neat DODAC vesicles in water. Upon addition of NaC, T-m initially decreases to vanish around R = 0.5, and the main transition peak broadens as R increases. For R > 1.0 two new (endo- and exothermic) peaks appear at lower temperatures indicating the formation of large aggregates since the dispersion is turbid. All samples are non-birefringent. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) data indicate that both DODAC and DODAC/NaC dispersions are highly polydisperse, and that the mean size of the aggregates tends to decrease as R increases. The gel to liquid crystalline phase transition of the double-chained cationic dioctadecyldimethylammonium chloride and bromide (DODAX, X = Cl- or Br-) in aqueous vesicle dispersions prepared by non-sonication, sonication and extrusion has been investigated using high-sensitivity differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The transition temperature (T-m) is a function of the preparation method, amphiphile concentration, vesicle curvature and nature of the counterion. DSC thermograms for DODAB and DODAC non-sonicated vesicle dispersions exhibit a single endothermic peak at T-m roughly independent of concentration up to 10 mM. Extrusion broadens the transition peak and shifts T-m downwards. Sonication, however, broadens slightly the transition peak and tends to shift T-m upwards suggesting that extrusion and sonication form vesicles with different characteristics. DODAC always exhibits higher T-m than DODAB irrespective of the preparation method. T-m changes as follows: T-m (sonicated) greater than or equal to T-m (non-sonicated) > T-m (extruded). Hysteresis of about 7 degrees C was observed for DODAB vesicle dispersions. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V. Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

High-curvature and stabilized vesicles of dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODABr) can be formed spontaneously in aqueous electrolytic solution. It is shown by cryo-transmission electron microscopy that 5.0 mM DODABr molecules associate in water at a temperature above its gel-to-liquid-crystalline phase transition temperature (T(m)approximate to45 degreesC) in a variety of complex bilayer structures. However, in the presence of NaCl the preferred structures formed are unilamellar and bilamellar vesicles with high curvature and the dispersion is polydisperse in size and geometry, but the main vesicle population contains spherical, flattened and smoothed structures. It is, however, less polydisperse than the corresponding salt-free dispersion, and the size polydispersity and the vesicle curvature radius tend to decrease with NaCl concentration. Long cylindrical bilamellar vesicles, with a very thin water layer separating the bilayers are also formed in the presence of 10 mM NaCl. The effect of the ionic strength on T-m, obtained by differential scanning calorimetry, is shown to depend on the nature of the counterion: Br- decreases, whereas Cl- increases Tm of DODABr, indicating different affinity of these counterions for the vesicle surfaces.

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSc) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) were used to obtain the gel to liquid-crystalline phase transition temperature (T-m) and the apparent hydrodynamic radius (R-h) of spontaneously formed cationic vesicles of dialkyldimethylammonium bromide salts (CnH2n+1)(2)(CH3)(2)N+center dot Br-, with varying chain lengths. The preparation of cationic vesicles from aqueous solution of these surfactants, for n = 12, 14, 16 and 18 (DDAB, DTDAB, DHDAB and DODAB, respectively), requires the knowledge of the surfactant gel to liquid-crystalline phase transition temperature, or melting temperature (T-m) since below this temperature these surfactants are poorly or not soluble in water. That series of cationic surfactants has been widely investigated as vesicle-forming surfactants, although C-12 and C-18, DDAB and DODAB are by far the most investigated from this series. The dependence of T-m of these surfactants on the number n of carbons in the surfactant tails is reported. The T-m obtained by DSC increases non-linearly with n, and the vesicle apparent radius R-h is about the same for DHDAB and DODAB, but much smaller for DDAB. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V.. The formation of spontaneous vesicles of dihexadecylphosphate (DHP) in a HEPES buffered solution at pH 7.4, the size, morphology and melting temperature, obtained by cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), are reported. The vesicles were formed by simply mixing a 5.0 mM lipid-solvent mixture at a temperature (75 degrees C) safely above the higher melting temperature T-m = 70.4 degrees C of DHP. The vesicle diameter ranges from 100 to 332 nm and their geometry is spherical, faceted or oblong. T-m increases from 66.8 to 70.4 as DHP concentration is raised from 0.6 to 5.0 mM.
