Microcellular (MC) soles based on polybutadiene (BR) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) blends for low-temperature applications were developed. A part of BR in BR-LDPE blend was replaced by natural rubber (NR) for property improvement. The BR-NR-LDPE blend-based MC sole shows good technical properties. Sulphur curing and DCP curing were tried in BR-LDPE and NR-BR-LDPE blends. Study shows that sulphur-cured MC sheets possess better technical properties than DCPcured MC sheets. 90/10 BR-LDPE and 60/30/10 BR-NR-LDPE blend combinations are found to be suitable for low-temperature applications.

ABSTRACT: Zinc salts of ethyl, isopropyl, and butyl xanthates were prepared in the laboratory. They were purified by reprecipitation and were characterized by IR, NMR, and thermogravimetric analysis techniques. The melting points were also determined. The rubber compounds with different xanthate accelerators were cured at temperatures from 30 to 150°C. The sheets were molded and properties such as tensile strength, tear strength, crosslink density, elongation at break, and modulus at 300% elongation were evaluated. The properties showed that all three xanthate accelerators are effective for room temperature curing.

The microwave dielectric properties of ZnAl2O4 spinels were investigated and their properties were tailored by adding different mole fractions of Ti02. The samples were synthesized using the mixed oxide rout.e. The phase purity and crystal structure were identified using X-ray diffraction technique. The sintered specimens were characterized in the microwave frequency range (3-13 GHz). The ZnA12O4 ceramics exhibited interesting dielectric properties (dielectric constant (e,.) = 8.5, unloaded quality factor (Q.) = 4590 at 12.27 GHz and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency (Tf) = -79 ppm/°C). Addition of Ti02 into the spinel improved its properties and the Tf approached zero for 0.83ZnAl2O4- 0.17TiO2• This temperature compensated composition has excellent microwave dielectric properties (Cr _ 12.67, Q, = 9950 at 10.075 GHz) which can be exploited for microwave substrate applications

A detailed ultrasonic study of the elastic properties of lithium ammonium sulfate ~LiNH4SO4! or LAS has been carried out below room temperature. The elastic constants of LAS at room temperature are reported. The discrepancy present in earlier elastic constant data associated with the different choice of axes for this orthorhombic system are clarified. The results of the temperature variation study down to 220 K confirm the ferroelastic phase transition at 285 K and establish a thermal hysteresis of about 2.5 K between the cooling and heating cycles. Results of the investigation on the suspected weak phase transition at 256 K suggest that this transition occurs at 242 K on cooling and at 256 K on heating, thus having a thermal hysteresis of about 14 K. However, since the observed elastic anomaly for this transition is very small, the nature of this transition still remains unclear

Mann–Kendall non-parametric test was employed for observational trend detection of monthly, seasonal and annual precipitation of five meteorological subdivisions of Central Northeast India (CNE India) for different 30-year normal periods (NP) viz. 1889–1918 (NP1), 1919–1948 (NP2), 1949–1978 (NP3) and 1979–2008 (NP4). The trends of maximum and minimum temperatures were also investigated. The slopes of the trend lines were determined using the method of least square linear fitting. An application of Morelet wavelet analysis was done with monthly rainfall during June– September, total rainfall during monsoon season and annual rainfall to know the periodicity and to test the significance of periodicity using the power spectrum method. The inferences figure out from the analyses will be helpful to the policy managers, planners and agricultural scientists to work out irrigation and water management options under various possible climatic eventualities for the region. The long-term (1889–2008) mean annual rainfall of CNE India is 1,195.1 mm with a standard deviation of 134.1 mm and coefficient of variation of 11%. There is a significant decreasing trend of 4.6 mm/year for Jharkhand and 3.2 mm/day for CNE India. Since rice crop is the important kharif crop (May– October) in this region, the decreasing trend of rainfall during themonth of July may delay/affect the transplanting/vegetative phase of the crop, and assured irrigation is very much needed to tackle the drought situation. During themonth of December, all the meteorological subdivisions except Jharkhand show a significant decreasing trend of rainfall during recent normal period NP4. The decrease of rainfall during December may hamper sowing of wheat, which is the important rabi crop (November–March) in most parts of this region. Maximum temperature shows significant rising trend of 0.008°C/year (at 0.01 level) during monsoon season and 0.014°C/year (at 0.01 level) during post-monsoon season during the period 1914– 2003. The annual maximum temperature also shows significant increasing trend of 0.008°C/year (at 0.01 level) during the same period. Minimum temperature shows significant rising trend of 0.012°C/year (at 0.01 level) during postmonsoon season and significant falling trend of 0.002°C/year (at 0.05 level) during monsoon season. A significant 4– 8 years peak periodicity band has been noticed during September over Western UP, and 30–34 years periodicity has been observed during July over Bihar subdivision. However, as far as CNE India is concerned, no significant periodicity has been noticed in any of the time series.

This thesis summarizes the results on the growth and characterisation of thin films of HA grown on TiAl6V4 (Ti) implant material at a lower substrate temperature by a combination of Pulsed laser deposition and a hydrothermal treatment to get sufficiently strong crystalline films suitable for orthopaedic applications. The comparison of the properties of the coated substrate has been made with other surface modification techniques like anodization and chemical etching. The in-vitro study has been conducted on the surface modified implants to assess its cell viability. A molecular level study has been conducted to analyze the adhesion mechanism of protein adhesion molecules on to HA coated implants.

The thermal diffusivity of y-alumina is determined by the photoacoustic method. The method is calibrated by determining the thermal diffusivity of copper and aluminum. The effect of the chemisorbed hydroxyl groups or thermal diffusivity is studied by degassing the sample at different temperatures.

Spectroscopic studies of laser -induced plasma from a high-temperature superconducting material, viz., YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO), have been carried out. Electron temperature and electron density measurements were made from spectral data. The Stark broad ening of emission lines was used to determine the electron density, and the ratio of line in tensities was exploited for the determination of electron temperature. An initial electron temperature of 2.35 eV and electron density of 2.5 3 1017 cm2 3 were observed. The dependence on electron temperature and density on different experimental parameters such as distance from the target, delay time after the in itiation of the plasm a, and laser irradiance is also discussed in detail. The effect of ambient gas on the dynamics of the plasma generated by laser ablation of a carbon target using 1.06 μm radiation from a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser has been investigated using a spectroscopic technique. The emission characteristics of the carbon plasma produced in argon, helium and air atmospheres are found to depend strongly on the nature and pressure of the surrounding gas. It has been observed that hotter and denser plasmas are formed in an argon atmosphere rather than in helium or air as an ambient.
