The co-residence of children with incarcerated mothers

In a national study this thesis examined the attitudes of key stakeholders about the co-residence of children with incarcerated mothers. A self-administered questionnaire was developed specifically for this research. The majority of respondents were not opposed to child co-residence in principle, conditional on the prison facilities and mothers' parenting competence. The clinical portfolio explored and highlighted practice and organisational issues arising for Victorian correctional services' psychologists when (i) assessing offenders for participation in the "Offence focused problem solving" program, and (ii) formulating treatment plans.Four case studies are presented.

The processes through which Affect infuses judgements of subjective well-being

This thesis clarifies the processing routes through which Affect can influence global subjective well-being, and reveals that the strength of these processing routes is moderated by dispositional factors. This has important implications that furthers understanding in the field of subjective well-being. The portfolio focuses on the client characteristics that are indicated to be influential upon the effectiveness, and thus the suitability of cognitive behavioural therapy. Four case studies are presented which illustrate how the suitability of CBT can be influenced by client factors.

An investigation of the influences on children's active free-play

This research examined the influences on children's (6-12 years) active free-play. The findings suggest that there are a number of strategies that focus on individual, social and physical environmental factors that have the potential to be successful in creating opportunities for children to be physically active in their free-time.

An examination of the consistency of investigative interviewers' performance

Three original studies were conducted to examine the consistency of investigative-interviewer performance across similar and distinct interview tasks. Overall, the degree of consistency depended on numerous factors, including the nature of the event and interview paradigm, the precision of the assessment measure and whether group versus individual stability was measured. The portfolio highlights and discusses some of the complexities that can arise when conducting a parenting capacity assessment with a patient who has, or is suspected of having, an intellectual disability. Four case studies are presented.

Factors influencing the impact of secondary exposure to trauma

The research found significant relationships between secondary exposure to client trauma and symptoms associated with secondary traumatic stress and vicarious trauma in a sample of community mental health clinicians. The research supports developmental conceptualisations of the relationships between these constructs and burnout, and identifies potential individual vulnerability and protective factors. The portfolio explores the impact of childhood maltreatment from an attachment theory perspective. Four clinical cases are presented illustrating the clinical relevance of the impact of childhood maltreatment and attachment disturbance, and the complexities associated with current attachment classification systems and differential diagnosis.

Adoption of VIDEOoverIP by deaf people in the workplace

This study explored deaf employees' adoption of videocommunication-via-the Internet, allowing sign language use between deaf people, and between deaf and hearing people via Video Relay Interpreting service. Major findings included a paradigm shift from text to video communication; and, a divergence from typical adoption theory, with government intervention required to prime the adoption of videocommunication by deaf people in Australia.

Assessment of movement participation for children with developmental coordination disorders

The Caregiver Assessment of Movement Participation was developed to identify children of 5-10 years old for movement participation difficulties in home contexts. Its psychometric properties were investigated including its usefulness as a screening instrument using both classical test theory methods and Rasch analysis. Results confirmed its validity and reliability.

Hope of education : Somali families and social connection

This thesis examines Somali parents' experience of their children's education after settling in Melbourne following the outbreak of civil war in Somalia in 1991. The research found that Somali parents instigate connections with teachers to generate social capital to enhance their children's education.

AHI1 and NDRG2 function in skeletal muscle and the development of type 2 diabetes

In this study, AHI1 and NDRG2 gene function in the insulin signalling pathways regulating skeletal muscle homeostasis was investigated. Findings implicate AHI1 in the regulation of insulin-stimulated glucose transport and the development of insulin resistance, whilst associating NDRG2 with the regulation of myoblast proliferation and differentiation; possible via interactions with PICK1 and arfaptin2.

General practitioners' role in health assessment of humanitarian settlers

An approach to health assessment of humanitarian settlers was developed and evaluated from the perspective of general practitioners (GPs). While conducting assessment was found to be feasible, there were significant barriers which GPs without a primary interest in refugee health and those working in private practice may find difficult to transcend.

An examination of adolescents' help seeking processes

This thesis examined factors that predict adolescents' professional help seeking when experiencing mental health problems over six months. Factors that strongly predicted help seeking included adolescents' ability to recognise that they were experiencing a problem; the type and severity of the problem experienced; and the preceived support from their family. The portfolio examined the potential benefits of using manualised CBT programs in a more flexible and individualised manner when treating children and adolescents.

Evaluation of novel dairy fatty acids in inflammatory muscle-wasting conditions

This work examined the effects of a novel dairy fatty acid conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and its effects on muscle wasting in advanced cancer. Results showed a positive anti-inflammatory role of CLA on the supression of tumour growth and established a model for studying the action of CLA in human muscle-wasting conditions.

Evolution of class I cytokine receptor signalling

Cytokines are proteins that provide essential signals to blood and immune cells. The evolution of this system was determined from primitive organisms to humans and zebrafish. Analysis of zebrafish granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (GCSF) signalling revealed broad conservation of function with mammals and a novel role in white blood cell migration.

Internet child pornography : an examination of attachment and intimacy deficits

This study found that Internet child pornographers (ICP) reported significantly less optimal attachment than non-offenders, matched child and matched adult sexual offenders. ICP also reported a more negative view of self than non-offenders and the matched sexual offender groups. Finally, the ICP group reported more social avoidance and distress than non-offenders. The portfolio explores the influence of treatment readiness on the best practice principles when working with violent offenders in relation to their assessment, and subsequent treatment recommendations. The importance of treatment readiness and its utility in relation to these principles is highlighted in four case studies.

Evaluation of an early intervention program for childhood conduct problems

Treatment outcomes of an early intervention program for childhood conduct problems were evaluated. Results provided support for the longitudinal effectiveness of the program in reducing conduct problems, social difficulties, and psychosocial impairment for young primary school aged children. Children's experience and expression of anger also reduced across the program's duration. The portfolio presents four case studies whose results provide further support for Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) as an effective and clinically useful treatment for paediatric OCD in everyday clinical contexts.
