An investigation was performed on the effect of temperature and organic load on the stability and efficiency of a 1.8-L fluidized-bed anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR), containing granulated biomass. Assays were carried out employing superficial up How velocity of 7 m/h, total cycle length of 6 h and synthetic wastewater volume of 1.3 L per cycle. The fluidized-bed ASH was operated at 15, 20, 25 and 30 degrees C with influent organic matter concentrations of 500 and 1000 mgCOD/L The system showed stability under all conditions and presented filtered samples removal efficiency ranging from 79 to 86%. A first-order kinetic model could be fitted to the experimental values of the organic matter concentration profiles. The specific kinetic parameter values of this model ranged from 0.0435 to 0.2360 L/(gTVS h) at the implemented operation conditions. in addition, from the slope of an Arrhenius plot, the activation energy values were calculated to be 16,729 and 12,673 cal/mol for operation with 500 and 1000 mgCOD/L, respectively. These results show that treatment of synthetic wastewater. with concentration of 500 mgCOD/L, was more sensitive to temperature variations than treatment of the same residue with concentration of 1000 mgCOD/L. Comparing the activation energy value for operation at 500 mgCOD/L with the value obtained by Agibert et al. (S.A. Agibert, M.B. Moreira, S.M. Ratusznei, J.A.D. Rodrigues, M. Zaiat, E. Foresti. Influence of temperature on performance of an ASBBR with circulation applied to treatment of low-strength wastewater. journal of Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology, 136 (2007) 193-206) in an ASBBR treating the same wastewater at the same concentration, the value obtained in the fluidized-bed ASBR showed to be superior, indicating that treatment of synthetic wastewater in a reactor containing granulated biomass was more sensitive to temperature variations than the treatment using immobilized biomass. International theory and practice have promoted state-assisted upgrading of `informal` urban areas worldwide since the late 1970s, with various forms of monitoring and assessment of impact. Two independent studies of how residents perceive and evaluate such interventions have recently been undertaken for neighbouring parts of the upgraded area of Novos Alagados on the Itapagipe peninsula in the northwestern part of Salvador, Brazil`s third largest city. These studies start from different premises and have been implemented in very different ways, but both have the objective of permitting the `voice` of the residents to be heard concerning the upgrading process. Comparing them helps highlight the essential `fuzzy` nature of values concerning urban interventions of this nature and leaves us with thought-provoking questions concerning the role of local society in relation to the state in urban development, and the potential this has for on-going forms of urban management in cities which are emerging globally. Chemical admixtures increase the theological complexity of cement pastes owing to their chemical and physical interactions with particles, which affects cement hydration and agglomeration kinetics. Using oscillatory rheometry and isothermal calorimetry, this article shows that the cellulose ether HMEC (hydroxymethyl ethylcellulose), widely used as a viscosity modifying agent in self-compacting concretes and dry-set mortars, displayed a steric dispersant barrier effect during the first 2 h of hydration associated to a cement retarding nature, consequently reducing the setting speed. However, despite this stabilization effect, the polymer increased the cohesion strength when comparing cement particles with the same hydration degree. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This article discusses the main aspects of the Brazilian real estate market in order to illustrate if it would be attractive for a typical American real estate investor to buy office-building portfolios in Brazil. The article emphasizes: [i] - the regulatory frontiers, comparing investment securitization, using a typical American REIT structure, with the Brazilian solution, using the Fundo de Investimento Imobiliario - FII; [ii] - the investment quality attributes in the Brazilian market, using an office building prototype, and [iii] - the comparison of [risk vs. yield] generated by an investment in the Brazilian market, using a FII, benchmarked against an existing REIT (OFFICE SUB-SECTOR) in the USA market. We conclude that investing dollars exchanged for Reais [the Brazilian currency] in a FII with a triple A office-building portfolio in the Sao Paulo marketplace will yield an annual income and a premium return above an American REIT investment. The highly aggressive scenario, along with the strong persistent exchange rate detachment to the IGP-M variations, plus instabilities affecting the generation of income, and even if we adopt a 300-point margin for the Brazil-Risk level, demonstrates that an investment opportunity in the Brazilian market, in the segment we have analyzed, outperforms an equivalent investment in the American market.

The present study approaches the economic and technical evaluation of equivalent carbon dioxide (CO(2) eqv.) capture and storage processes, considered in a proposal case compared to a base case. The base case considers an offshore petroleum production facility, with high CO(2) content (4 vol%) in the composition of the produced gas and both CO(2) and natural gas emissions to the atmosphere, called CO(2) eqv. emissions. The results obtained with this study, by using a Hysys process simulator, showed a CO(2) emission reduction of 65% comparing the proposal case in relation to the base case.

A Thermodynamic air-standard cycle was envisaged for Ranque-Hilsh (R-H) or Vortex Tubes to provide relevant Thermodynamic analysis and tools for setting operating limits according to the conservation laws of mass and energy, as well as the constraint of the Second Law of Thermodynamics. The study used an integral or control volume approach and resulted in establishing working equations for evaluating the performance of an R-H tube. The work proved that the coefficient of performance does not depend on the R-H tube operating mode, i.e., the same value is obtained independently if the R-H tube operates either as a heat pump or as a refrigeration device. It was also shown that the isentropic coefficient of performance displays optima values of cold and hot mass fractions for a given operating pressure ratio. Finally, the study was concluded by comparing the present analysis with some experimental data available in the literature for operating pressures ranging 2-11 atm. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd and IIR. Using the previously described method for appearance function determination, described in Part I of this article, the breakage characterization of the main Carajas ore types was carried out. Based on such characteristics, the ball mill circuit performance was evaluated through simulations. The model described in the first part was used. The results were assessed by comparing ball mill products and cyclone overflow size distribution, as well as simulated recirculating loads. The simulations indicated the potential for processing such ore types at the Carajas grinding circuit, which until now was unknown.

A matrix method is presented for simulating acoustic levitators. A typical acoustic levitator consists of an ultrasonic transducer and a reflector. The matrix method is used to determine the potential for acoustic radiation force that acts on a small sphere in the standing wave field produced by the levitator. The method is based on the Rayleigh integral and it takes into account the multiple reflections that occur between the transducer and the reflector. The potential for acoustic radiation force obtained by the matrix method is validated by comparing the matrix method results with those obtained by the finite element method when using an axisymmetric model of a single-axis acoustic levitator. After validation, the method is applied in the simulation of a noncontact manipulation system consisting of two 37.9-kHz Langevin-type transducers and a plane reflector. The manipulation system allows control of the horizontal position of a small levitated sphere from -6 mm to 6 mm, which is done by changing the phase difference between the two transducers. The horizontal position of the sphere predicted by the matrix method agrees with the horizontal positions measured experimentally with a charge-coupled device camera. The main advantage of the matrix method is that it allows simulation of non-symmetric acoustic levitators without requiring much computational effort.

A key issue in the design of tyres is their capability to sustain intense impact loads. Hence, the development of a reliable experimental data basis is important, against which numerical models can be compared. Experimental data on tyre impact in the open literature is somewhat rare. In this article, a specially design rig was developed for tyre impact tests. It holds the test piece in a given position, allowing a drop mass with a round indenter to hit pressurised tyres with different impact energies. A high-speed camera and a laser velocimeter were used to track the impact event. From the laser measurement it was possible to obtain the impact force and the local indentation. A finite element study was then conducted using material properties from the open literature. By comparing the experimental measurements with the numerical results, it became evident that the model was capable of predicting the major features of the impact of a mass on a tyre. This model is therefore of value for the assessment of the performance of a tyre in extreme cases of mass impact. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This work discusses the determination of the breathing patterns in time sequence of images obtained from magnetic resonance (MR) and their use in the temporal registration of coronal and sagittal images. The registration is made without the use of any triggering information and any special gas to enhance the contrast. The temporal sequences of images are acquired in free breathing. The real movement of the lung has never been seen directly, as it is totally dependent on its surrounding muscles and collapses without them. The visualization of the lung in motion is an actual topic of research in medicine. The lung movement is not periodic and it is susceptible to variations in the degree of respiration. Compared to computerized tomography (CT), MR imaging involves longer acquisition times and it is preferable because it does not involve radiation. As coronal and sagittal sequences of images are orthogonal to each other, their intersection corresponds to a segment in the three-dimensional space. The registration is based on the analysis of this intersection segment. A time sequence of this intersection segment can be stacked, defining a two-dimension spatio-temporal (2DST) image. The algorithm proposed in this work can detect asynchronous movements of the internal lung structures and lung surrounding organs. It is assumed that the diaphragmatic movement is the principal movement and all the lung structures move almost synchronously. The synchronization is performed through a pattern named respiratory function. This pattern is obtained by processing a 2DST image. An interval Hough transform algorithm searches for synchronized movements with the respiratory function. A greedy active contour algorithm adjusts small discrepancies originated by asynchronous movements in the respiratory patterns. The output is a set of respiratory patterns. Finally, the composition of coronal and sagittal image pairs that are in the same breathing phase is realized by comparing of respiratory patterns originated from diaphragmatic and upper boundary surfaces. When available, the respiratory patterns associated to lung internal structures are also used. The results of the proposed method are compared with the pixel-by-pixel comparison method. The proposed method increases the number of registered pairs representing composed images and allows an easy check of the breathing phase. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Properties of hybrid films can be enhanced if their molecular architecture is controlled. In this paper, poly (p-phenylene vinylene) was mixed with stearic acid in order to form stable hybrid Langmuir monolayers. Surface properties of these films were investigated with measurements of surface pressure, and also with polarization modulation infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS). The films were transferred from the air-water interface to solid supports through the Langmuir-Blodgett technique, and the viability of the film as optical device was investigated with fluorescence spectroscopy. Comparing the fluorescent spectra for the polymer in solution, as a casting film, and as an LB film, the emission bands for LB films were narrower and appeared at lower wavelengths. The interactions between the film components and the design for the LB film may take advantage of the method to immobilize luminescent polymers in mixed ultrathin films adsorbed in solid matrices. Mechanical blocking of the columnar front during the columnar to equiaxed transition (CET) is studied by quantitatively comparing the CET positions obtained with one stochastic model and two deterministic models for the unidirectional solidification of an Al-7 (wt pct) Si alloy. One of the deterministic models is based on the solutal blocking of the columnar front, whereas the other model is based on the mechanical blocking. The solutal-blocking model and the mechanical-blocking model with the traditional blocking fraction of 0.49 give columnar zones larger than those predicted with the stochastic model. When a blocking fraction of 0.2 is adopted, however, the agreement is very good for a range of nucleation undercoolings and number density of equiaxed grains. Therefore, changing the mechanical-blocking fraction in deterministic models from 0.49 to 0.2 seems to model more accurately the mechanical-blocking process that can lead to the CET.

A simple calorimetric method to estimate both kinetics and heat transfer coefficients using temperature-versus-time data under non-adiabatic conditions is described for the reaction of hydrolysis of acetic anhydride. The methodology is applied to three simple laboratory-scale reactors in a very simple experimental setup that can be easily implemented. The quality of the experimental results was verified by comparing them with literature values and with predicted values obtained by energy balance. The comparison shows that the experimental kinetic parameters do not agree exactly with those reported in the literature, but provide a good agreement between predicted and experimental data of temperature and conversion. The differences observed between the activation energy obtained and the values reported in the literature can be ascribed to differences in anhydride-to-water ratios (anhydride concentrations). Template matching is a technique widely used for finding patterns in digital images. A good template matching should be able to detect template instances that have undergone geometric transformations. In this paper, we proposed a grayscale template matching algorithm named Ciratefi, invariant to rotation, scale, translation, brightness and contrast and its extension to color images. We introduce CSSIM (color structural similarity) for comparing the similarity of two color image patches and use it in our algorithm. We also describe a scheme to determine automatically the appropriate parameters of our algorithm and use pyramidal structure to improve the scale invariance. We conducted several experiments to compare grayscale and color Ciratefis with SIFT, C-color-SIFT and EasyMatch algorithms in many different situations. The results attest that grayscale and color Ciratefis are more accurate than the compared algorithms and that color-Ciratefi outperforms grayscale Ciratefi most of the time. However, Ciratefi is slower than the other algorithms.

We consider brightness/contrast-invariant and rotation-discriminating template matching that searches an image to analyze A for a query image Q We propose to use the complex coefficients of the discrete Fourier transform of the radial projections to compute new rotation-invariant local features. These coefficients can be efficiently obtained via FFT. We classify templates in ""stable"" and ""unstable"" ones and argue that any local feature-based template matching may fail to find unstable templates. We extract several stable sub-templates of Q and find them in A by comparing the features. The matchings of the sub-templates are combined using the Hough transform. As the features of A are computed only once, the algorithm can find quickly many different sub-templates in A, and it is Suitable for finding many query images in A, multi-scale searching and partial occlusion-robust template matching.
