This report was done within the scope of the internship integrated master’s degree in Veterinay Medicine. It is divided in two parts. In the first part, an analisys of the casuistic followed during the internship is done. The second part is composed by a literature review about the theme ”Feline Arterial Thromboembolism”(FAT), as well as the description and discussion of two clinical cases followed during the internship. FAT is characterized by the embolization of a thrombus in a artery of systemic circulation, being its location more frequently in iliac trifurcation of aorta artery. On most of the cases the thrombus has its origins on the left atrium, as a result of cardiomyopathy. Besides the diagnosis being easily obtained through clinical signs, the treatment and prevention of this disease represents a challenge to the veterinarian clinician, due to the FAT recurrance rate and high mortality, projecting a pour/reserved prognosis.

The world of small animal veterinary practice is vast and complex and needs a continuous study. This report is divided in two parts. The first describes the activities performed during the curricular internship at the clinic AlcabidecheVet. The second consists of a monograph which theme is chronic kidney disease. Chronic kidney disease affects both dogs and cats of declining age, and has an irreversible progression. There’s been scientific advances in its prevention and diagnosis with the study of biomarkers of kidney function. It’s also necessary to understand the pathological mechanisms in action in this disease, so its treatment and control can aim towards the welfare and the life extension of pets.

Objective: The prevalence of wearing and fracture of complete dentures was evaluated among edentulous patients treated in two dental schools in Brazil. Background: Acceptance and wearing of complete dentures are related to adaptive behaviour of edentulous patients. However, one reason that could interfere with the wearing dentures is their potential to fracture, which is still a common complication in denture rehabilitation practice. Material and methods: Two hundred and twenty-four edentulous patients rehabilitated with complete dentures from 2000 to 2005 in Araçatuba and Araraquara Dental School, University of State of São Paulo, were assessed in 2006 and 2007 to answer a questionnaire about wearing and fracture of their dentures. Statistical analysis were performed using Epi Info software and chi-squared test to compare maxillary and mandibular data (α = 0.05). Results: Almost 26% of the patients did not wear their dentures, and among the remainder, the majority wore the maxillary denture. About 30% of the dentures were fractured, with higher prevalence in the maxillary arch (p = 0.003). Conclusions: Discontinuation of wearing dentures was quite high, especially considering the treatment which was carried out in university clinics. Prevalence of fractures was also high, greater for the maxillary denture, and was one of the main reasons for non-wearing of complete dentures. © 2011 The Gerodontology Society and John Wiley & Sons A/S.

Osteoarthritis of the hip joint is caused by a combination of intrinsic factors and extrinsic factors. Different surgical techniques are being performed to delay or halt osteoarthritis. Success of salvage procedures of the hip depends on the existing cartilage and joint damage before surgery; the likelihood of therapy failure rises with advanced osteoarthritis. For imaging of intra-articular hip pathology, MR imaging represents the best technique because of its ability to directly visualize cartilage, superior soft tissue contrast, and the prospect of multidimensional imaging. This article gives an overview on the standard MR imaging techniques used for diagnosis of hip osteoarthritis and their implications for surgery.

Osteoarthritis (OA) of the hip joint stems from a combination of intrinsic factors, such as joint anatomy, and extrinsic factors, such as injuries, diseases, and load. Possible risk factors for OA are instability and impingement. Different surgical techniques, such as osteotomies of the pelvis and femur, surgical dislocation, and hip arthroscopy, are being performed to delay or halt OA. Success of salvage procedures of the hip depends on the existing cartilage and joint damage before surgery. The likelihood of therapy failure rises with advanced OA. For imaging of intra-articular hip pathology, MRI represents the best technique because it enables clinicians to directly visualize cartilage, it provides superior soft tissue contrast, and it offers the prospect of multidimensional imaging. However, opinions differ on the diagnostic efficacy of MRI and on the question of which MRI technique is most appropriate. This article gives an overview of the standard MRI techniques for diagnosis of hip OA and their implications for surgery.

Coronary artery disease is prevalent in patients who have severe emphysema and who are being considered for lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS). Significant valvular heart diseases may also coexist in these patients. Few thoracic surgeons have performed LVRS in patients who have severe cardiac diseases. Conversely, few cardiac surgeons have been willing to undertake major cardiac surgery in patients who have severe emphysema. This report reviews the evidence regarding combined cardiac surgery and LVRS to determine the optimal management strategy for patients who have severe emphysema and who are suitable for LVRS, but who also have coexisting significant cardiac diseases that are operable.
