At low mass flow rates axial compressors suffer from flow instabilities leading to stall and surge. The inception process of these instabilities has been widely researched in the past - primarily with the aim of predicting or averting stall onset. In recent times, attention has shifted to conditions well before stall and has focussed on the level of irregularity in the blade passing signature in the rotor tip region. In general, this irregularity increases in intensity as the flow rate through the compressor is reduced. Attempts have been made to develop stall warning/avoidance procedures based on the level of the flow irregularity, but little effort has been made to characterise the irregularity, or to understand its underlying causes. Work on this project has revealed for the first time that the increase in irregularity in the blade passing signature is highly dependent on both tip-clearance and eccentricity. In a compressor with small, uniform, tip-clearance, the increase in blade passing irregularity which accompanies a reduction in flow rate will be modest. If the tip-clearance is enlarged, however, there will be a sharp rise in irregularity at all circumferential locations. In a compressor with eccentric tip-clearance, the increase in irregularity will only occur in the part of the annulus where the tip-clearance is largest, regardless of the average clearance level. In this paper, some attention is also given to the question of whether this irregularity observed in the pre-stall flow field is due to random turbulence, or to some form of coherent flow structure. Detailed flow measurements reveal that the latter is the case. From these findings, it is clear that a stall warning system based on blade passing signature irregularity will not be viable in an aero-engine where tip-clearance size and eccentricity change during each flight cycle and over the life of the compressor. Computer modelling approaches have significant potential to enable decision-making about various aspects of responsive manufacturing. In order to understand the system prior to the selection of any responsiveness strategy, multiple process segments of organisations need to be modelled. The article presents a novel systematic approach for creating coherent sets of unified enterprise, simulation and other supporting models that collectively facilitate responsiveness. In this approach, enterprise models are used to explicitly define relatively enduring relationships between (i) production planning and control (PPC) processes, that implement a particular strategy and (ii) process-oriented elements of production systems, that are work loaded by the PPC processes. Coherent simulation models, can in part be derived from the enterprise models, so that they computer execute production system behaviours. In this way, time-based performance outcomes can be simulated; so that the impacts of alternative PPC strategies on the planning and controlling historical or forecasted patterns of workflow, through (current and possible future) production system models, can be analysed. The article describes the unified modelling approach conceived and its application in a furniture industry case study small and medium enterprise (SME). This paper considers the estimation of statistics of displacement of a vibrating rectangular plate with random wave scatterers. The influence of uncertainty is investigated using point impedance theory. Coherent boundary effects are seen, which decrease when the number of scatterers increases. The boundary effect is investigated using images and the first side and corner reflections are found to be a minimum requirement to estimate the spatial correlation. Statistics for point driven response are investigated under the assumption that the statistics of the natural frequencies follow those of the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE). The estimates are compared with Monte Carlo simulation results, and they show good agreement. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Ubiquitous in-building Real Time Location Systems (RTLS) today are limited by costly active radio frequency identification (RFID) tags and short range portal readers of low cost passive RFID tags. We, however, present a novel technology locates RFID tags using a new approach based on (a) minimising RFID fading using antenna diversity, frequency dithering, phase dithering and narrow beam-width antennas, (b) measuring a combination of RSSI and phase shift in the coherent received tag backscatter signals and (c) being selective of use of information from the system by, applying weighting techniques to minimise error. These techniques make it possible to locate tags to an accuracy of less than one metre. This breakthrough will enable, for the first time, the low-cost tagging of items and the possibility of locating them at relatively high precision.

The generation of ultrashort optical pulses by semiconductor lasers has been extensively studied for many years. A number of methods, including gain-/Q-switching and different types of mode locking, have been exploited for the generation of picosecond and sub-picosecond pulses [1]. However, the shortest pulses produced by diode lasers are still much longer and weaker than those that are generated by advanced mode-locked solid-state laser systems [2]. On the other hand, an interesting class of devices based on superradiant emission from multiple contact diode laser structures has also been recently reported [3]. Superradiance (SR) is a transient quantum optics phenomenon based on the cooperative radiative recombination of a large number of oscillators, including atoms, molecules, e-h pairs, etc. SR in semiconductors can be used for the study of fundamental properties of e-h ensembles such as photon-mediated pairing, non-equilibrium e-h condensation, BSC-like coherent states and related phenomena. Due to the intrinsic parameters of semiconductor media, SR emission typically results in the generation of a high-power optical pulse or pulse train, where the pulse duration can be much less than 1 ps, under optimised bias conditions. Advantages of this technique over mode locking in semiconductor laser structures include potentially shorter pulsewidths and much larger peak powers. Moreover, the pulse repetition rate of mode-locked pulses is fixed by the cavity round trip time, whereas the repetition rate of SR pulses is controlled by the current bias and can be varied over a wide range. © 2012 IEEE.

Computations are made for chevron and coflowing jet nozzles. The latter has a bypass ratio of 6:1. Also, unlike the chevron nozzle, the core flow is heated, making the inlet conditions reminiscent of those for a real engine. A large-eddy resolving approach is used with circa 12 × 10 6 cell meshes. Because the codes being used tend toward being dissipative the subgrid scale model is abandoned, giving what can be termed numerical large-eddy simulation. To overcome near-wall modeling problems a hybrid numerical large-eddy simulation-Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes related method is used. For y + ≤ 60 a Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes model is used. Blending between the two regions makes use of the differential Hamilton-Jabobi equation, an extension of the eikonal equation. For both nozzles, results show encouraging agreement with measurements of other workers. The eikonal equation is also used for ray tracing to explore the effect of the mean flow on acoustic ray trajectories, thus yielding a coherent solution strategy. © 2011 by Cambridge University.

Sociomateriality has been attracting growing attention in the Organization Studies and Information Systems literatures since 2007, with more than 140 journal articles now referring to the concept. Over 80 percent of these articles have been published since January 2011 and almost all cite the work of Orlikowski (2007, 2010; Orlikowski and Scott 2008) as the source of the concept. Only a few, however, address all of the notions that Orlikowski suggests are entailed in sociomateriality, namely materiality, inseparability, relationality, performativity, and practices, with many employing the concept quite selectively. The contribution of sociomateriality to these literatures is, therefore, still unclear. Drawing on evidence from an ongoing study of the adoption of a computer-based clinical information system in a hospital critical care unit, this paper explores whether the notions, individually and collectively, offer a distinctive and coherent account of the relationship between the social and the material that may be useful in Information Systems research. It is argued that if sociomateriality is to be more than simply a label for research employing a number of loosely related existing theoretical approaches, then studies employing the concept need to pay greater attention to the notions entailed in it and to differences in their interpretation.

Tunneling through two vertically coupled quantum dots is studied by means of a Pauli master equation model. The observation of double peaks in the current-voltage characteristic in a recent experiment is analyzed in terms of the tunnel coupling between the quantum dots and the coupling to the contacts. Different regimes for the emitter chemical potential indicating different peak scenarios in the tunneling current are discussed in detail. We show by comparison with a density matrix approach that the interplay of coherent and incoherent effects in the stationary current can be fully described by this approach.

The kinks formation in heterostructural nanowires was observed to be dominant when InAs nanowires were grown on GaAs nanowires. Nanowires were grown through vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism in an MOCVD (metalorganic chemical vapor deposition) reactor. GaAs nanowires were grown in [1 1 1 ]B direction on a GaAs (1 1 1 )B substrate. When InAs nanowires grown on the GaAs nanowires, most of the InAs nanowires changed their growth directions from [1 1 1 ]B to other 〈111〉B directions. The kinks formation is ascribed to the large compressive misfit strain at the GaAs/InAs interface (7.2% lattice mismatch between GaAs and InAs) and the high mobility of indium species during MOCVD growth. The in-depth analysis of the kinks formation was done by growing InAs for short times on the GaAs nanowires and characterizing the samples. The hindrance to compressively strain InAs to form coherent layers with GaAs pushed the InAs/Au interfaces to the sides of the GaAs nanowires growth ends. New InAs/Au interfaces have generated at the sides of GaAs nanowires, due to lateral growth of InAs on GaAs nanowires. These new interfaces led the InAs nanowires growth in other 〈111〉B directions. The morphological and structural features of these heterostructural kinked nanowires were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. © 2006 IEEE.

Riblets are small surface protrusions aligned with the flow direction, which confer an anisotropic roughness to the surface [6]. We have recently reported that the transitional-roughness effect in riblets, which limits their performance, is due to a Kelvin–Helmholtz-like instability of the overlying mean flow [7]. According to our DNSs, the instability sets on as the Reynolds number based on the roughness size of the riblets increases, and coherent, elongated spanwise vortices begin to develop immediately above the riblet tips, causing the degradation of the drag-reduction effect. This is a very novel concept, since prior studies had proposed that the degradation was due to the interaction of riblets with the flow as independent units, either to the lodging of quasi-streamwise vortices in the surface grooves [2] or to the shedding of secondary streamwise vorticity at the riblet peaks [9]. We have proposed an approximate inviscid analysis for the instability, in which the presence of riblets is modelled through an average boundary condition for an overlying, spanwise-independent mean flow. This simplification lacks the accuracy of an exact analysis [4], but in turn applies to riblet surfaces in general. Our analysis succeeds in predicting the riblet size for the onset of the instability, while qualitatively reproducing the wavelengths and shapes of the spanwise structures observed in the DNSs. The analysis also connects the observations with the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability of mixing layers. The fundamental riblet length scale for the onset of the instability is a ‘penetration length,’ which reflects how easily the perturbation flow moves through the riblet grooves. This result is in excellent agreement with the available experimental evidence, and has enabled the identification of the key geometric parameters to delay the breakdown. Although the appearance of elongated spanwise vortices was unexpected in the case of riblets, similar phenomena had already been observed over other rough [3], porous [1] and permeable [11] surfaces, as well as over plant [5,14] and urban [12] canopies, both in the transitional and in the fully-rough regimes. However, the theoretical analyses that support the connection of these observations with the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability are somewhat scarce [7, 11, 13]. It has been recently proposed that Kelvin–Helmholtz-like instabilities are a dominant feature common to “obstructed” shear flows [8]. It is interesting that the instability does not require an inflection point to develop, as is often claimed in the literature. The Kelvin-Helmholtz rollers are rather triggered by the apparent wall-normal-transpiration ability of the flow at the plane immediately above the obstructing elements [7,11]. Although both conditions are generally complementary, if wall-normal transpiration is not present the spanwise vortices may not develop, even if an inflection point exists within the roughness [10]. The purpose of this thesis is to give answer to the question: why do riblets stop working for a certain size? Riblets are small surface grooves aligned in the mean direction of an overlying turbulent flow, designed specifically to reduce the friction between the flow and the surface. They were inspired by biological surfaces, like the oriented denticles in the skin of fastswimming sharks, and were the focus of a significant amount of research in the late eighties and nineties. Although it was found that the drag reduction depends on the riblet size scaled in wall units, the physical mechanisms implicated have not been completely understood up to now. It has been explained how riblets of vanishing size interact with the turbulent flow, producing a change in the drag proportional to their size, but that is not the regime of practical interest. The optimum performance is achieved for larger sizes, once that linear behavior has broken down, but before riblets begin adopting the character of regular roughness and increasing drag. This regime, which is the most relevant from a technological perspective, was precisely the less understood, so we have focused on it. Our efforts have followed three basic directions. First, we have re-assessed the available experimental data, seeking to identify common characteristics in the optimum regime across the different existing riblet geometries. This study has led to the proposal of a new length scale, the square root of the groove crosssection, to substitute the traditional peak-to-peak spacing. Scaling the riblet dimension with this length, the size of breakdown of the linear behavior becomes roughly universal. This suggests that the onset of the breakdown is related to a certain, fixed value of the cross-section of the groove. Second, we have conducted a set of direct numerical simulations of the turbulent flow over riblets, for sizes spanning the full drag reduction range. We have thus been able to reproduce the gradual transition between the different regimes. The spectral analysis of the flows has proven particularly fruitful, since it has made possible to identify spanwise rollers immediately above the riblets, which begin to appear when the riblet size is close to the optimum. This is a quite surprising feature of the flow, not because of the uniqueness of the phenomenon, which had been reported before for other types of complex and porous surfaces, but because most previous studies had focused on the detail of the flow above each riblet as a unit. Our novel approach has provided the adequate tools to capture coherent structures with an extended spanwise support, which interact with the riblets not individually, but collectively. We have also proven that those spanwise structures are responsible for the increase in drag past the viscous breakdown. Finally, we have analyzed the stability of the flow with a simplified model that connects the appearance of rollers to a Kelvin–Helmholtz-like instability, as is the case also for the flow over plant canopies and porous surfaces. In spite of the model emulating the presence of riblets only in an averaged, general fashion, it succeeds to capture the essential attributes of the breakdown, and provides a theoretical justification for the scaling with the groove cross-section.

Dynamism and uncertainty are real challenges for present day manufacturing enterprises (MEs). Reasons include: an increasing demand for customisation, reduced time to market, shortened product life cycles and globalisation. MEs can reduce competitive pressure by becoming reconfigurable and change-capable. However, modern manufacturing philosophies, including agile and lean, must complement the application of reconfigurable manufacturing paradigms. Choosing and applying the best philosophies and techniques is very difficult as most MEs deploy complex and unique configurations of processes and resource systems, and seek economies of scope and scale in respect of changing and distinctive product flows. It follows that systematic methods of achieving model driven reconfiguration and interoperation of component based manufacturing systems are required to design, engineer and change future MEs. This thesis, titled Enhanced Integrated Modelling Approach to Reconfiguring Manufacturing Enterprises , introduces the development and prototyping a model-driven environment for the design, engineering, optimisation and control of the reconfiguration of MEs with an embedded capability to handle various types of change. The thesis describes a novel systematic approach, namely enhanced integrated modelling approach (EIMA), in which coherent sets of integrated models are created that facilitates the engineering of MEs especially their production planning and control (PPC) systems. The developed environment supports the engineering of common types of strategic, tactical and operational processes found in many MEs. The EIMA is centred on the ISO standardised CIMOSA process modelling approach. Early study led to the development of simulation models during which various CIMOSA shortcomings were observed, especially in its support for aspects of ME dynamism. A need was raised to structure and create semantically enriched models hence forming an enhanced integrated modelling environment. The thesis also presents three industrial case examples: (1) Ford Motor Company; (2) Bradgate Furniture Manufacturing Company; and (3) ACM Bearings Company. In order to understand the system prior to realisation of any PPC strategy, multiple process segments of any target organisation need to be modelled. Coherent multi-perspective case study models are presented that have facilitated process reengineering and associated resource system configuration. Such models have a capability to enable PPC decision making processes in support of the reconfiguration of MEs. During these case studies, capabilities of a number of software tools were exploited such as Arena®, Simul8®, Plant Simulation®, MS Visio®, and MS Excel®. Case study results demonstrated effectiveness of the concepts related to the EIMA. The research has resulted in new contributions to knowledge in terms of new understandings, concepts and methods in following ways: (1) a structured model driven integrated approach to the design, optimisation and control of future reconfiguration of MEs. The EIMA is an enriched and generic process modelling approach with capability to represent both static and dynamic aspects of an ME; and (2) example application cases showing benefits in terms of reduction in lead time, cost and resource load and in terms of improved responsiveness of processes and resource systems with a special focus on PPC; (3) identification and industrial application of a new key performance indicator (KPI) known as P3C the measuring and monitoring of which can aid in enhancing reconfigurability and responsiveness of MEs; and (4) an enriched modelling concept framework (E-MUNE) to capture requirements of static and dynamic aspects of MEs where the conceptual framework has the capability to be extended and modified according to the requirements. The thesis outlines key areas outlining a need for future research into integrated modelling approaches, interoperation and updating mechanisms of partial models in support of the reconfiguration of MEs.

Spectral and energetic characteristics of the cooperative recombination of high density electrons and holes in bulk GaAs are experimentally studied at room temperature. It is shown that the properties and parameters of femtosecond superradiant pulses are conditioned by the collective properties of electrons and holes. Electron-hole pairing and the formation of a short-living coherent e-h BCS state distinguish strongly the regime of cooperative emission from all radiative e-h recombination regimes, which have been observed earlier. The dependences of the energy gap (the order parameter), the Fermi energy, and the band gap of the coherent e-h BCS state on the concentration of electron-hole pairs are obtained.
