Treatment of the chloro-substituted diboradiferrocene derivative 1 with Me3SiOMe and subsequent hydrolysis resulted in formation of the novel organometallic bis(borinic acid) derivative 3. The assembly of 3 into supramolecular structures via hydrogen bonding and reversible covalent boron-oxygen bond formation was explored. Upon crystallization from acetone or THF one-dimensional chains form in which molecules of 3 alternately serve as hydrogen bond donors and acceptors. The additional OH hydrogens that are not involved in hydrogen bonding within the polymeric chains undergo hydrogen bonding to the solvent molecules. Removal of the solvent was achieved at moderate temperature under high vacuum. While the polymeric chains remain intact, in the absence of the solvent as a hydrogen bond acceptor, short contacts to the Cp rings of neighboring polymer strands lead to a network-like structure. At higher temperatures, further dehydration occurs with formation of B-O-B linkages as confirmed by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Oligomers with up to 15 repeating units (30 ferrocenes) were detected.

In this work, we have synthesized a series of TDPP derivatives with different alkyl groups such as n-hexyl (-C6H13) 3a, 2-ethylhexyl (-(2-C2H5)C6H12) 3b, triethylene glycol mono methyl ether (-(CH2CH2O)(3c)H-3, TEG) 3c, and octadodecyl (-(8-C8H17)C12H22) 3d. N,N dialkylation of Othiophene-diketopyrrolopyrrole (TDPP, 1) strongly influences its solubility, solid state packing, and structural order. These materials allow us to explicitly study the influence of alkyl chain on solid state packing and photophysical properties. TDPP moiety containing two different alkyl groups 3e (TEG and 2-ethylhexyl) and 3f (TEG and n-hexyl) were synthesized for the first time. The absorption spectra of all derivatives exhibited a red shift in solid state when compared to their solution spectra. The type of alkyl chains leads to change in the optical band gaps in solid state. The fluorescence study reveals that TDPP derivatives have strong pi-pi interaction in the solid state and the extent of bathochromic shift is due to combination of intramolecular interaction and formation of aggregates in solid state. This behavior strongly depends on the nature of alkyl chain. The presence of strong C-H center dot center dot center dot O inter chain interactions and CH-pi interactions in solid state exhibits strong influence on the photophysical properties of TDPP chromophore.

Single crystals of lithium D-isoascorbate monohydrate (LDAM), (C6H7O6Li center dot H2O), are grown by a solution growth method. The crystal structure of LDAM is solved using single crystal X-ray diffraction. The space group is orthorhombic P2(1)2(1)2(1) with four formula units per unit cell and lattice parameters a = 7.7836(3) angstrom, b = 8.7456(3) angstrom, and c = 11.0368(4) angstrom. Solubility of the material in water is determined thermogravimetrically and found to have a positive temperature coefficient of solubility. Large optical quality single crystals are subsequently grown from aqueous solution by a slow cooling method. The crystal has a bulky prismatic habit and among the prominent faces the c face appears as the only principal morphological face. The crystal exhibits a (010) cleavage. Dielectric spectroscopy reveals a nearly Debye type Cole-Cole behavior with anisotropy in relaxation. Optical transmission range is found to be from 300 to 1400 nm. The principal refractive indices of this biaxial crystal, measured using Brewster's angle method, at wavelengths 405, 543, and 632.8 nm, show high dispersion. The crystal is negative biaxial with 2V(z) = 107.8 degrees (405 nm) and belongs to the Hobden class 3. Theoretically generated type 1 and type 2 second order phase matching curves match very well with the experimental results. The second-order nonlinear coefficient d(14) was determined to be 7 x 10(-13) m/V. For the optimum phase matching direction (type 2), the second-order effective nonlinear coefficient and the walk off angle are determined to be 0.84 times d(14) and 3.5 degrees respectively. The crystal possesses high multiple surface damage thresholds of 18 GW/cm(2) and 8 GW/cm(2) at laser wavelengths 1064 and 532 nm, respectively.

Lithium L-Ascorbate dihydrate (LLA) is a new metal organic nonlinear optical crystal belonging to the saccharide family. Single crystals of LLA were grown from aqueous solution. Solubility of the crystal has a positive temperature coefficient facilitating growth by slow cooling. Rietveld refinement was used to confirm the phase formation. The crystal has prismatic habit with (010), (001) and (10-1) prominent faces. Thermal analysis shows that the crystal is stable up to 102 degrees C. Transmission spectrum of the crystal extends from 302 nm to 1600 nm. Dielectric spectroscopic analysis revealed Cole Cole behaviour and prominent piezoelectric resonance peaks were observed in the range of 100-200 kHz. Second harmonic generation (SHG) conversion efficiency of up to 2.56 times that of a phase matched KDP crystal was achieved when the (010) plate of LLA single crystal was rotated about the +ve c axis, by 9.4 degrees in the clockwise direction. We also observed SHG conical sections which were attributed to noncollinear phase matching. The observation of the third conical section suggests very high birefringence and large nonlinear coefficients. A detailed study of surface laser damage showed that the crystal has high multiple damage thresholds of 9.7 GW cm(-2) and 42 GW cm(-2) at 1064 nm and 532 nm radiation respectively. In this paper, a simple but accurate semi analytical charge sheet model is presented for threshold voltage of accumulation mode polycrystalline silicon on insulator (PSOI) MOSFETs. In this model, we define the threshold voltage (V-T) of the polysilicon accumulation mode MOSFET as the gate voltage required to raise the surface potential (phi(s)) to a value phi(sT) necessary to overcome the charge trapping in the grain boundary and to create channel accumulation charge that is equal to the channel accumulation charge available in the case of single crystal silicon accumulation mode MOSFET at that phi(sT). The correctness of the model is demonstrated by comparing the theoretically estimated values of threshold voltage with the experimentally measured threshold voltages on the accumulation mode PSOI MOSFETs fabricated in the laboratory using LPCVD polysilicon layers doped with boron to achieve dopant densities in the range 3.3 x 10(-15)-5 x 10(17)/cm(3). Further, it is shown that the threshold voltage values of accumulation mode PSOI MOSFETs predicted by the present model match very closely with the experimental results, better than those obtained with the models previously reported in the literature. In the present study, four new multicomponent forms of lamotrigine (LTG) with selected carboxylic acids, viz. acetic acid, propionic acid, sorbic acid, and glutaric acid, have been identified. Preliminary solid-state characterization was done by differential scanning calorimetry/thermogravimetric, infrared, and powder X-ray diffraction techniques. X-ray single-crystal structure analysis confirmed the proton transfer, stoichiometry, and the molecular composition, revealing all of these to be a new salt/salt-cocrystal/salt monosolvate monohydrate of LTG. All four compounds exhibited both the aminopyridine dimer of LTG (motif 4) and cation-anion dimers between protonated LTG and the carboxylate anion in their crystal structures. Further, these new crystal forms were subjected to solubility studies in water, powder dissolution studies in 0.1 N HCl, and stability studies under humid conditions in comparison with pure LTG base. The solubility of these compounds in water is significantly enhanced compared with that of pure base, which is attributed to the type of packing motifs present in their crystal structures as well as to the lowering of the pH by the acidic coformers. Solid residues of all forms remaining after solubility and dissolution experiments were also assessed for any transformation in water and acidic medium.

b12, one of the few broadly neutralizing antibodies against HIV-1, binds to the CD4 binding site (CD4bs) on the gp120 subunit of HIV-1 Env. Two small fragments of HIV-1 gp120, b121a and b122a, which display about 70% of the b12 epitope and include solubility-enhancing mutations, were designed. Bacterially expressed b121a/b122a were partially folded and could bind b12 but not the CD4bs-directed non-neutralizing antibody b6. Sera from rabbits primed with b121a or b122a protein fragments and boosted with full-length gp120 showed broad neutralizing activity in a TZM-bl assay against a 16-virus panel that included nine Tier 2 and 3 viruses as well as in a five-virus panel previously designed to screen for broad neutralization. Using a mean IC50 cut-off of 50, sera from control rabbits immunized with gp120 alone neutralized only one virus of the 14 non-Tier 1 viruses tested (7%), whereas sera from b121a- and b122a-immunized rabbits neutralized seven (50%) and twelve (86%) viruses, respectively. Serum depletion studies confirmed that neutralization was gp120-directed and that sera from animals immunized with gp120 contained lower amounts of CD4bs-directed antibodies than corresponding sera from animals immunized with b121a/b122a. Competition binding assays with b12 also showed that b121a/2a sera contained significantly higher amounts of antibodies directed toward the CD4 binding site than the gp120 sera. The data demonstrate that it is possible to elicit broadly neutralizing sera against HIV-1 in small animals.

Superplastic tensile tests on warm rolled and optimally annealed boron modified alloy Ti-6Al-4V-0.1B at a temperature of 850 degrees C and initial strain rate of 3 x 10(-4) s(-1) results in a higher elongation (similar to 500%) compared to the base alloy Ti-6Al-4V (similar to 400%). The improvement in superplasticity has been attributed to enhanced contribution from interfacial boundary sliding to the overall deformation for the boron modified alloy. The boundary sliding was facilitated by the starting microstructure which predominantly contains small equiaxed primary a grains with narrow size distribution. Dynamic processes such as coarsening and globularization of primary a phase occur under the test condition but do not significantly contribute to the observed difference in superplasticity between the two alloys. In spite of cavitation takes place around the TiB particles during deformation, they do not cause macroscopic cracking and early fracture by virtue of the cavities being extremely localized. Localized cavitation is found to correlate with increased material transfer due to faster diffusion.

The first part of this study describes the evolution of microstructure and texture in Ti-6Al-4V-0.1B alloy during sub-transus rolling vis-A -vis the control alloy Ti-6Al-4V. In the second part, the static annealing response of the two alloys at self-same conditions is compared and the principal micromechanisms are analyzed. Faster globularization kinetics has been observed in the Ti-6Al-4V-0.1B alloy for equivalent annealing conditions. This is primarily attributed to the alpha colonies, which leads to easy boundary splitting via multiple slip activation in this alloy. The other mechanisms facilitating lamellar to equiaxed morphological transformations, e.g., termination migration and cylinderization, also start early in the boron-modified alloy due to small alpha colony size, small aspect ratio of the alpha lamellae, and the presence of TiB particles in the microstructure. Both the alloys exhibit weakening of basal fiber (ND||aOE (c) 0001 >) and strengthening of prism fiber (RD||aOE (c) aOE(a)) upon annealing. A close proximity between the orientations of fully globularized primary alpha and secondary alpha phases during alpha -> beta -> alpha transformation has accounted for such a texture modification.

Dendrimeric nanoparticles are potential drug delivery devices which can enhance the solubility of hydrophobic drugs, thus increasing their bioavailability and sustained release action. A quantitative understanding of the dendrimer-drug interactions can give valuable insight into the solubility and release profile of hydrophobic drug molecules in various solvent conditions. Fully atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been performed to study the interactions of G5 PPIEDA (G5 ethylenediamine cored poly(propylene imine)) dendrimer and two well known drugs (Famotidine and Indomethacin) at different pH conditions. The study suggested that at low pH the dendrimer-drug complexes are thermodynamically unstable as compared to neutral and high pH conditions. Calculated Potential of Mean Force (PMF) by umbrella sampling showed that the release of drugs from the dendrimer at low pH is spontaneous, median release at neutral pH and slow release at high pH. In addition, Molecular Mechanics Poisson-Boltzmann Surface Area (MM-PBSA) binding free energy calculations were also performed at each umbrella sampling window to identify the various energy contributions. To understand the effect of dendrimer chemistry and topology on the solubility and release profile of drugs, this study is extended to explore the solubility and release profile of phenylbutazone drug complexed with G3 poly(amidoamine) and G4 diaminobutane cored PPI dendrimers. The results indicate that the pH-induced conformational changes in dendrimer, ionization states, dendrimer type and pK(a) of the guest molecules influence the free energy barrier and stability of complexation, and thus regulate drug loading, solubility and release.

Present work provides an electrodeposition based methodology for synthesizing Ni-rich, Ag-Ni nanowires using an alumina template. Ag-Ni system shows negligible solid solubility in the bulk. Detailed structural and compositional characterization of as-synthesized nanowires using transmission electron microscopy technique revealed a two phase microstructure. Regions along and near the nanowire axis contained crystalline Ag-Ni solid solution phase with Ag-rich composition. Whereas, regions away from the axis and near the nanowire boundary predominantly contained nanocrystalline Ni-rich, Ni-Ag solid solution phase. (C) 2013 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

The feasibility of using transition metal fragments to stabilize B2H4 in planar configuration by donating 2 electrons to the boron moiety is investigated. Building upon the existing theoretical and experimental data and aided by the isolobal analogy, the model transition metal complexes Cr(CO)(4)B2H4 (6), Mn(CO)-CpB2H4 (7), Fe(CO)(3)B2H4 (8) and CoCpB2H4 (9) are chosen to illustrate this unique bonding feature bond strengthening with pi-back donation. Other possible types of complexes with B2H4 and the metal fragment are also explored and the energies are compared. One of the low energy isomers wherein the planar B2H4 interacts with the metal fragment in an in-plane fashion represents a unique case study for the Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson model. In this complex the back-donation from the metal fills the p bonding orbital between the two boron atoms thus forming a B=B double bond.

We investigate the effect of nitrogen and boron doping on Li diffusion through defected graphene using first principles based density functional theory. While a high energy barrier rules out the possibility of Li-diffusion through the pristine graphene, the barrier reduces with the incorporation of defects. Among the most common defects in pristine graphene, Li diffusion through the divacancy encounters the lowest energy barrier of 1.34 eV. The effect of nitrogen and boron doping on the Li diffusion through doped defected-graphene sheets has been studied. N-doping in graphene with a monovacancy reduces the energy barrier significantly. The barrier reduces with the increasing number of N atoms. On the other hand, for N doped graphene with a divacancy, Li binds in the plane of the sheet, with an enhanced binding energy. The B doping in graphene with a monovacancy leads to the enhancement of the barrier. However, in the case of B-doped graphene with a divacancy, the barrier reduces to 1.54 eV, which could lead to good kinetics. The barriers do not change significantly with B concentration. Therefore, divacancy, B and N doped defected graphene has emerged as a better alternative to pristine graphene as an anode material for Li ion battery.

Background: We highlight an unrecognized physiological role for the Greek key motif, an evolutionarily conserved super-secondary structural topology of the beta gamma-crystallins. These proteins constitute the bulk of the human eye lens, packed at very high concentrations in a compact, globular, short-range order, generating transparency. Congenital cataract (affecting 400,000 newborns yearly worldwide), associated with 54 mutations in beta gamma-crystallins, occurs in two major phenotypes nuclear cataract, which blocks the central visual axis, hampering the development of the growing eye and demanding earliest intervention, and the milder peripheral progressive cataract where surgery can wait. In order to understand this phenotypic dichotomy at the molecular level, we have studied the structural and aggregation features of representative mutations. Methods: Wild type and several representative mutant proteins were cloned, expressed and purified and their secondary and tertiary structural details, as well as structural stability, were compared in solution, using spectroscopy. Their tendencies to aggregate in vitro and in cellulo were also compared. In addition, we analyzed their structural differences by molecular modeling in silico. Results: Based on their properties, mutants are seen to fall into two classes. Mutants A36P, L45PL54P, R140X, and G165fs display lowered solubility and structural stability, expose several buried residues to the surface, aggregate in vitro and in cellulo, and disturb/distort the Greek key motif. And they are associated with nuclear cataract. In contrast, mutants P24T and R77S, associated with peripheral cataract, behave quite similar to the wild type molecule, and do not affect the Greek key topology. Conclusion: When a mutation distorts even one of the four Greek key motifs, the protein readily self-aggregates and precipitates, consistent with the phenotype of nuclear cataract, while mutations not affecting the motif display `native state aggregation', leading to peripheral cataract, thus offering a protein structural rationale for the cataract phenotypic dichotomy ``distort motif, lose central vision''.

Zinc Oxide (ZnO) and indium doped ZnO (IZO) thin films with different indium compositions were grown on p-type boron doped Si substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The effect of indium concentration on the structural, optical and electrical properties of the film was studied. XRD, XPS and Raman studies confirm the single phase formation and successful doping of In in to ZnO. We observed various photoluminescence emissions, ranging from UV to visible, with the incorporation of In into ZnO. Room temperature Current-Voltage (I-V) characteristics showed good p-n junction properties for n-type-undoped and In doped ZnO with p-type substrates. The turn on voltage was observed to be decreasing with increase in In composition.
