The objective of the present study was to characterize the centesimal composition and quantify fatty acids in regular and diet chocolate brands with emphasis on trans fatty acids. Regular and diet dark chocolate samples from the major brands analyzed were purchased from different local supermarkets in the city of Maringá. The brands were labeled with letters and five lots of each brand with three chocolate units per lot were analyzed in triplicate. We observed that the diet chocolates from the same brands presented larger lipid contents. The main fatty acids observed were saturated fatty acids (SFA), myristic acid (14:0), palmitic acid (16:0), and estearic acid (18:0). Among the monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and trans fatty acids, oleic acid (18:1n-9), linoleic acid (18:2n-6), and elaidic acid (18:1-9t) predominated. The trans fatty acid contents found in the analyzed samples were lower than and/or in accordance with the limits proposed by the Brazilian regulation.

Several essential oils of condiment and medicinal plants possess proven antimicrobial activity and are of important interest for the food industry. Therefore, the Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MIC) of those oils should be determined for various bacteria. MIC varies according to the oil used, the major compounds, and the physiology of the bacterium under study. In the present study, the essential oils of the plants Thymus vulgaris (time), Cymbopogon citratus (lemongrass) and Laurus nobilis (bay) were chemically quantified, and the MIC was determined on the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19117, Salmonella enterica Enteritidis S64, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853. The essential oil of C. citratus demonstrated bacterial activity at all concentrations tested and against all of the bacteria tested. The majority of essential oil compounds were geranial and neral. The major constituent of T. vulgaris was 1.8-cineol and of L. nobilis was linalool, which presented lower antibacterial activity, followed by 1.8-cineol. The Gram-negative bacteria demonstrated higher resistance to the use of the essential oils tested in this study. E. coli was the least sensitive and was inhibited only by the oils of C. citratus and L. nobilis.

Brazil has the third largest contingent of patients on maintenance hemodialysis (HD) worldwide. However, little is known regarding survival rate and predictors of mortality risk in that population, which are the purposes of this study. A total of 3,082 patients incident on HD, from 2000 to 2004, at 25 dialysis facilities distributed among 7 out of 26 states of Brazil were followed-up until 2009. Patients were 52 ± 16 years-old, 57.8% men, and 20.4%, diabetics. The primary outcome was all causes of mortality. Data were censored at five years of follow-up. The global five-year survival rate was 58.2%. In the Cox proportional model, variables associated with risk of death were: age (hazard ratio - HR = 1.44 per decade, p < 0.0001), diabetes (HR = 1.51, p < 0.0001), serum albumin (HR = 0.76 per g/dL, p = 0.001), creatinine (HR = 0.92 per mg/dL, p < 0.0001), and phosphorus (HR = 1.06 per mg/dL, p = 0.04). The present results show that the mortality rate on HD in this Brazilian cohort was relatively low, but the population is younger and with a lower prevalence of diabetes than the ones reported for developed countries.

Introduction: Familial Hypomagnesaemia with hypercalciuria and nephrocalcinosis, with severe ocular impairment secondary to claudin-19 mutation, is a rare recessive autossomic disorder. Its spectrum includes renal Mg2+ wasting, medullary nephrocalcinosis and progressive chronic renal failure in young people. Objective: To report a case of kidney transplantation father to daughter in a familial occurrence of severe bilateral nephrocalcinosis associated with ocular impairment in a non-consanguineous Brazilian family, in which two daughters had nephrocalcinosis and severe retinopathy. Methods: The index case, a 19 years-old female, had long-lasting past medical history of recurrent urinary tract infections, and the abdominal X-ray revealed bilateral multiple renal calcifications as well as ureteral lithiasis, and she was under haemodialysis. She had the diagnosis of retinitis pigmentosa in the early neonatal period. The other daughter (13 years-old) had also nephrocalcinosis with preserved kidney function, retinopathy with severe visual impairment, and in addition, she exhibited hypomagnesaemia = 0.5 mg/dL and hypercalciuria. The other family members (mother, father and son) had no clinical disease manifestation. Mutation analysis at claudin-19 revealed two heterozygous missense mutations (P28L and G20D) in both affected daughters. The other family members exhibited mutant monoallelic status. In despite of that, the index case underwent intrafamilial living donor kidney transplantation (father). Conclusion: In conclusion, the disease was characterized by an autosomal recessive compound heterozygous status and, after five years of donation the renal graft function remained stable without recurrence of metabolic disturbances or nephrocalcinosis. Besides, donor single kidney Mg2+ and Ca2+ homeostasis associated to monoallelic status did not affect the safety and the usual living donor post-transplant clinical course.

Teknologian nopea kehitys ja toimintaympäristön muutokset kannustavat organisaatioita omaksumaan innovatiivisia ratkaisuja, pysyäkseen kilpailukykyisinä ja kehityksessä mukana. Perinteisen kustannussäästöjen ja toiminnan tehostamisen tavoittelun onkin syrjäyttänyt halu vahvistaa ja kasvattaa kilpailuetua. Näistä kannusteista huolimatta tutkimukset osoittavat, että suurin osa Suomessa toimivista organisaatioista ei johda eri teknologioihin pohjautuvia innovaatioita kovinkaan kokonaisvaltaisesti, vaan IT:n käyttö on enemmänkin reaktiivista. Tutkimuksessa tutkimmekin, miten Suomessa johdetaan IT-innovaatioiden, ja näistä erityisesti big datan, käyttöönottoa sekä madollisia poikkeavuuksia näiden välillä. Tutkimus on tehty kvalitatiivisin tutkimusmenetelmin, hyödyntämällä fokusryhmätutkimusmetodia empiirisen aineiston keruussa. Tutkimus esittää IT-innovaatioiden käyttöönoton johtamisen prosessina, joka lähtee liikkeelle viestintäkanavista saatavasta ärsykkeesta. Tietämystä vahvistetaan suostutteluvaiheessa, joka laukaisee arviointivaiheen. Prosessi etenee lopulta IT-innovaatioiden hyötyjen ja kustannusten arvioinnin myötä käyttöönotosta tehtävään päätökseen. Käyttöönottoon vaikuttavat myös erilaiset taustatekijät, jotka voivat edistää tai estää IT-innovaation omaksumista. Päätöksentekovaiheessa organisaation tietohallintojohdolla ja liiketoimintajohdolla on omat roolinsa, jotka muotoutuvat organisaation työnjaon ja investoinnin suuruuden mukaan. Tutkimuskohteiden käyttöönoton johtamistavoista kertovat, miten organisaatioiden käyttöönottoprosessin ja päätöksentekoprosessin vaiheet etenevät, mitkä taustatekijät vaikuttavat käyttöönottopäätökseen ja millaisia hyötyjä tavoitellaan. Big datan johtamistapojen selvittämiseen vaikuttaa myös se, onko organisaatiolla strategiaa tai toimintasuunnitelmaa sen hyödyntämiseksi. Tutkielman johtopäätöksenä toteamme, että yleistä IT-innovaatioiden käyttöönottoa johdetaan kolmella tavalla: strategisesti, reaktiivisesti ja muutoksen pakottamana. Johtamistapojen erot tulevat esiin investoinnin suuruuden, käyttöönottoon johtavan päätöksenteon sekä käyttöönoton taustalla vaikuttavien syiden kautta. Yleisesti IT-innovaatioita näytettäisiin johdettavan melko samassa suhteessa strategisesti, reaktiivisesti ja muutoksen pakottamana. Big datan käyttöönoton johtamisessa havaitsimme piirteitä vain strategisesta ja reaktiivisesta johtamisesta. Yleinen IT-innovaatioiden ja big datan käyttöönoton johtaminen eroavat toisistaan sen suhteen, että big dataa näytettäisiin johdettavan vielä vähemmän strategisesti ja sen päätöksentekovastuut ovat hajanaisempia. Yleisesti voidaan sanoa, että tutkimuskohteilla esiintyi heikosti selkeitä ja kokonaisvaltaisia strategioita tai toimintasuunnitelmia IT-innovaatioiden käyttöönoton johtamiseksi.

The removal of organics from copper electrolyte solutions after solvent extraction by dual media filtration is one of the most efficient ways to ensure the clean electrolyte flow into the electrowinning. The clean electrolyte will ensure the good quality cathode plate production. Dual media filtration uses two layers of filter media for filtration as anthracite and garnet respectively. The anthracite layer will help the coalescing of the entrained organic droplets which will then float to the top of the filter, and back to the solvent extraction process. The garnet layer will catch any solids left in the electrolyte traveling through the filter media. This thesis will concentrate on characterization of five different anthracites in order to find some differences using specific surface area analysis, particle size analysis, and morphology analysis. These results are compared to the pressure loss values obtained from lab column tests and bed expansion behavior. The goal of the thesis was to find out if there were any differences in the anthracite which would make the one perform better than the other. There were no big differences found on any aspect of the particle characterization, but some found differences should be further studied in order to confirm the meaning of the porosity, surface area, intensity mean and intensity SD (Standard Deviation) on anthracites and their use in dual media filtration. The thesis work analyzed anthracite samples the way that is not found on any public literature sources, and further studies on the issue would bring more knowledge to the electrolyte process.

Big datalle on povattu satojen miljardien dollarien hyödyntämispotentiaalia. Big data kuvaa lukuista eri lähteistä peräisin olevia valtavia ja nopeasti kasvavia datamassoja. Kandidaatintyön tavoitteena on tutkia, kuinka big dataa voidaan hyödyntää toimitusketjun hallinnassa sekä toimitusketjun eri osa-alueilla. Työ on tehty kirjallisuuskatsauksena pohjautuen big datan ja toimitusketjun hallinnan kirjallisuuteen sekä erityisesti näitä yhdistäviin tieteellisiin artikkeleihin. Big dataa hyödyntämällä toimitusketjua saadaan tehostettua, tuottoja maksimoitua sekä kysyntää ja tarjontaa yhteensovitettua paremmin. Big dataa hyödyntämällä myös riskien hallinta, päätöksenteko, muutosvalmius ja sidosryhmäsuhteet paranevat. Big datan avulla asiakkaasta saadaan luotua kokonaisnäkymä, jonka avulla markkinointia, segmentointia, hinnoittelua ja tuotteen sijoittelua voidaan optimoida. Big datan avulla myös hankintaa, tuotantoa ja kunnossapitoa pystytään parantamaan sekä kuljetuksia ja varastoja seuraamaan tehokkaammin. Big datan hyödyntäminen on haastavaa ja siihen liittyy teknologisia, organisatorisia ja prosesseihin liittyviä haasteita. Yhtenä ratkaisuna on big data - analytiikan käyttöönoton ja käytön ulkoistaminen, mutta se sisältää omat riskinsä.

Pro Gradu -tutkielmassani tarkastelen Ernest Hemingwayn alun perin vuonna 1925 julkaistuja kahta novellia ”Big Two-Hearted River” ja ”Indian Camp”. Molemmat teokset kuuluvat Nick Adams -tarinoihin, jotka ovat kokoelma novelleja, joissa Hemingway kuvaa Nick Adamsin elämää pojasta mieheksi. Nick Adams on usein tulkittu Hemingwayn alter egoksi ja monet tapahtumat ovatkin suoraa heijastusta Hemingwayn elämästä. Päähenkilön lisäksi monia Nick Adams -tarinoita yhdistää luonnon vahva läsnäolo ja Hemingwayn kuuluisan maalauksellinen miljöön deskriptiivisyys. Käyttämäni ekokriittisen teorian avulla pyrin osoittamaan tutkielmassani, että Nick Adamsin hahmo peilautuu miljöökuvauksessa syventyen dynaamiseksi hahmoksi ja että Hemingwayn luonto- ja ympäristökuvaus peilaa hahmon sisäistä maailmaa hyvinkin läheisesti. Tutkimukseni teoreettinen viitekehys, ekokritiikki, on kirjallisuudentutkimuksen suuntaus, joka tutkii ihmisen ja fyysisen ympäristön suhdetta toisiinsa. Lisäksi hyödynnän tutkielmassani dikotomioita, joiden avulla tarkastelen ja analysoin novelleista nousevia aiheita. Esimerkiksi seuraavat dikotomiat ovat keskeisiä molemmissa novelleissa: kulttuuri vs. luonto, pastoraali vs. erämaa, matka vs. oleskelu, keho vs. mieli, vesi vs. maa, tuli tai valo vs. vesi ja elämä vs. kuolema.

In the new age of information technology, big data has grown to be the prominent phenomena. As information technology evolves, organizations have begun to adopt big data and apply it as a tool throughout their decision-making processes. Research on big data has grown in the past years however mainly from a technical stance and there is a void in business related cases. This thesis fills the gap in the research by addressing big data challenges and failure cases. The Technology-Organization-Environment framework was applied to carry out a literature review on trends in Business Intelligence and Knowledge management information system failures. A review of extant literature was carried out using a collection of leading information system journals. Academic papers and articles on big data, Business Intelligence, Decision Support Systems, and Knowledge Management systems were studied from both failure and success aspects in order to build a model for big data failure. I continue and delineate the contribution of the Information System failure literature as it is the principal dynamics behind technology-organization-environment framework. The gathered literature was then categorised and a failure model was developed from the identified critical failure points. The failure constructs were further categorized, defined, and tabulated into a contextual diagram. The developed model and table were designed to act as comprehensive starting point and as general guidance for academics, CIOs or other system stakeholders to facilitate decision-making in big data adoption process by measuring the effect of technological, organizational, and environmental variables with perceived benefits, dissatisfaction and discontinued use.

Organizations often consider investing in a new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system as a way to enhance their business processes, as it allows integrating information used by multiple different departments into a harmonized computing system. The hope of gaining significant business benefits, such as reducing operating costs, is the key reason why organizations have decided to invest in ERP systems since 1990’s. Still, all ERP projects do not end up in success, and deployment of ERP system does not necessarily guarantee the results people were waiting for. This research studies why organizations invest in ERP, but also what downsides ERP projects currently have. Additionally Enterprise Application Integrations (EAI) as next generation’s ERP solutions are studied to challenge and develop traditional ERP. The research questions are: What are the weaknesses in traditional ERP deployment in today’s business? How does the proposed next generation’s ERP answer to these weaknesses? At the beginning of the thesis, as an answer to the first research question, the basics of ERP implementation are introduced with both the pros and cons of investing in ERP. Key concepts such as IS integration and EAI are also studied. Empirical section of the thesis focuses on answering the second research question from the integration approach. A qualitative research is executed by interviewing five experienced IT professionals about EAI benefits, limitations, and problems. The thematic interview and questionnaire follow the presented ERP main elements from literature. The research shows that adopting traditional ERP includes multiple downsides, e.g. inflexibility and requiring big investments in terms of money. To avoid these critical issues, organizations could find a solution from integrations between their current IS. Based on the empirical study a new framework for the next generation’s ERP is created, consisting of a model and a framework that deal with various features regarding IS adoption. With this framework organizations can assess whether they should implement EAI or ERP. The model and framework suggest that there are multiple factors IT managers needs to consider when planning their IT investments, including their current IS, role of IT in the organization, as well as new system’s flexibility, investment level, and number of vendors. The framework created in the thesis encourages IT management to assess holistically their i) organization, ii) its IT, and iii) solution requirements in order to determine what kind of IS solution would suit their needs the best.

Besides analyzing capitalist societies historically and thinking of them in terms of phases or stages, we may compare different models or varieties of capitalism. In this paper I survey the literature on this subject, and distinguish the classification that has a production or business approach from those that use a mainly political criterion. I identify five forms of capitalism: among the rich countries, the liberal democratic or Anglo-Saxon model, the social or European model, and the endogenous social integration or Japanese model; among developing countries, I distinguish the Asian developmental model from the liberal-dependent model that characterizes most other developing countries, including Brazil.
