Surface hydrothermal deposits of the shallow-water Menez Gwen vent field located in the rift zone of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge are mostly composed of nonmetalliferous minerals in contrast to sulfide deposits of deep-water fields. Here sulfide minerals occur only in dispersed form. High-temperature sulfide deposits strongly enriched in copper and zinc occur only immediately below the surface of the bottom. This is related to subsurface boiling and phase separation of initial high-temperature hydrothermal ore-bearing solution that ascends from the interior to the floor surface.

Biogeochemical behavior of a group of heavy metals and metalloids in water (including their dissolved and suspended particulate forms), bottom sediments, and zoobenthos was studied in the Ob River estuary (Obskaya Guba) - Kara Sea section on the basis of data obtained during Cruise 54 of R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh in September-October 2007. Changes in ratios of dissolved and particulate forms of Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd, and As were shown, as well as growth of adsorbed fractions of the elements in near-bottom suspended matter under mixing of riverine and marine waters. Features of chemical element accumulation in typical benthic organisms of the Obskaya Guba and the Kara Sea were revealed, and their concentrating factors were calculated based on specific conditions of the environment. It was shown that shells of bivalves possessing higher biomass compared to other groups of organisms in the Obskaya Guba play an important role in deposition of heavy metals. In the Obskaya Guba mollusks accumulate Cd and Pb at the background level, whereas Cu and Zn contents appear to be higher than the background level.

Analysis of rare earth element (REE) distribution and behavior in ore-bearing hydrothermal-sedimentary deposits from the Red Sea is carried out. Geochemical patterns and mechanisms of REE accumulation in metalliferous sediments of the open ocean and in deposits adjoined to areas of hydrothermal discharge are shown. Main factors, which determine composition of REE and the level of their accumulation in hydrothermal occurrences of the Red Sea, are considered.

AMS-14C dated sediment cores from the Ob and Yenisei estuaries and the adjacent inner Kara Sea were investigated to determine the siliclastic and organic carbon fluxes and their relationship to paleoenvironmental changes. The variability of sediment fluxes during Holocene times is related to the post-glacial sea-level rise and changes in river discharge and coastal erosion input. Whereas during the late/middle Holocene most of the terrigenous sediments were deposited in the estuaries and the areas directly off the estuaries, huge amounts of sediments accumulated on the Kara Sea shelf farther north during the early Holocene before about 9 Cal. kyrs. BP. The maximum accumulation at that time is related to the lowered sea level, increased coastal erosion, and increased river discharge due to the final stage of mountain deglaciation of the Putoran Massif. Increased supply of Yenisei-derived material indicated by peak magnetic susceptibility values probably occurred in climate-related pulses culminating near 11, 10, and 9 Cal. kyrs. BP. As sea level rose, the main Holocene depocenter migrated southward. Based on hydrogen index values and n-alkanes, the organic matter is predominantly of terrigenous origin. Maximum accumulation rates of 1.5 to more than 6 g/cm**2/y occurred in the early Holocene sediments, suggesting more humid climatic conditions with an increased vegetation cover in the source area at that time. In general, high organic carbon accumulation rates characterize the estuaries and the inner Kara Sea as important sink for terrigenous organic carbon. A high-resolution record of Holocene variability of magnetic susceptibility (MS) in an AMS14C-dated sediment core from the northern Yenisei estuary may indicate natural variability of Arctic climate change and river discharge on a centennial to millenial time scale. Short-term maxima in MS probably related to warmer climate, enhanced precipitation, intensified weathering/erosion and increased river discharge, display a frequency of about 300 to 700 years.

Mineral and chemical compositions and physical properties of diatomaceous clayey-siliceous sediments from the Sea of Okhotsk are studied. Accumulation rates of silica are determined. Their compositional model based on silica content is similar to that of Late Jurassic and Olenekian-Middle Anisian cherts from the Sikhote Alin region. Thickness of Holocene siliceous unit and accumulation rates of siliceous deposits depended on bioproductivity in the upper water layer and seafloor topography. Accumulation rates of amorphous SiO2 (0.05-5.7 g/cm**2/ka) and free SiO2 (0.5-11.6 g/cm**2/ka) are minimal on seamounts and maximal in depressions near foothills. These values match accumulation rates of free SiO2 in Triassic and Late Jurassic basins of the Sikhote Alin region (0.33-3 g/cm**2/ka). Comparison of composition and accumulation rates of silica shows that Triassic and Late Jurassic siliceous sequences of Sikhote Alin could accumulate in a marginal marine basin near a continent.

To assess the relationship of radiolarian production, species distribution in water and surface sediment to water-mass characteristics, biological productivity and export regimes in the Sea of Okhotsk (SOk) we accomplished a quantitative analysis of radiolarian assemblages obtained from 35 surface-sediment samples and 115 plankton samples recording the radiolarian depth distribution in the upper 1000 m of the water column at 23 locations. This study augments the knowledge on the autecological demands of radiolarians dwelling in a specific hydrographic and biological environment, and extracts new information on the significance of radiolarians for the assessment of past oceanographic and climatic development in high latitudes. Highest radiolarian accumulation rates and seasonal radiolarian standing stocks are encountered in the western part of the SOk close to Sakhalin, marking the environmental conditions in this area as most favorable for radiolarian production. Maximum standing stocks occur during summer, indicating that the radiolarian signal preserved in the sediment record is mainly produced during this season when the mesopelagic biomass is at highest activity. We identified seven radiolarian species and groups related to specific water-mass characteristics, depth habitats, and productivity regimes. Of those, Dictyophimus hirundo and Cycladophora davisiana are most prominent in the Sea of Okhotsk Intermediate Water (200-1000 m), the latter representing an indicator of the occurrence of cold and well ventilated intermediate/deep water and enhanced export of organic matter from a highly productive ocean surface. While Antarctissa (?) sp. 1 is typically related to the cold-water Sea of Okhotsk Dicothermal Layer (SODL), ranging between 50 and 150 m water depth, the surface waters above the SODL affected by strong seasonal variability are inhabited predominantly by taxa belonging to the Spongodiscidae, having a broad environmental tolerance. Taxa only found in the sediment record show that the plankton study did not cover all assemblages occurring in the modern SOk. This accounts for an assemblage restricted to the western Kurile Basin and apparently related to environmental conditions influenced by North Pacific and Japan Sea waters. Other important taxa include species of the Plagoniidae group, representing the most prominent contributors to the SOk plankton and surface sediments. These radiolarians show a more opportunistic occurrence and are indicative of high nutrient supply in a hydrographic environment characterized by pronounced stratification enhancing heterotrophic activity and phytodetritus export.
