Water availability is a major limiting factor for wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in rain-fed agricultural systems worldwide. Root architecture has important functional implications for the timing and extent of soil water extraction, yet selection for root traits in wheat breeding programs has been largely limited due to the lack of suitable phenotyping methods. The aim of this research was to develop a low-cost high-throughput phenotyping method to facilitate selection for desirable root traits. We developed a method to assess ‘seminal root angle’ and ‘seminal root number’ in seedlings – two proxy traits associated to root architecture of mature wheat plants (1). The method involves measuring the angle between the first pair of seminal roots and the number of roots of wheat seedlings grown in transparent pots (Figure 1). Images captured at 5 to 10 days after sowing are analyzed to calculate seminal root angle and number. Performing this technique under “speed breeding” conditions (plants grown at a density of 600 plants / m2, under controlled temperature and constant light) allows the selection based on the desired root traits of up to 5 consecutive generations within 12 months. Alternatively, when focusing only on germplasm screening, up to 52 successive phenotypic assays can be conducted within 12 months. This approach has been shown to be highly reproducible, it requires little resource (time, space, and labour) and can be used to rapidly enrich breeding populations with desirable alleles for narrow root angle and a high number of seminal roots to indirectly target the selection of deeper root system with higher branching at depth. Such root characteristics are highly desirable in wheat to cope with the climate model projections, especially in summer rainfall dominant regions including some Australian, Indian, South American and African cropping regions, where winter crops mainly rely on deep stored water.

Keskeisin tuomarin asemaa koskeva valtiosääntöoikeudellinen periaate on tuomiovallan riippumattomuuden periaate PL 3 §:n 3 momentissa. Tuomarin riippumattomuudella tavoitellaan erityisesti päätöksenteon riippumattomuutta nimenomaan yksilöiden ja yhteisöjen oikeusturvan takaamiseksi. Riippumattomuusvaatimuksen on todettu kattavan erityisesti yksittäisiin lainkäyttöasioihin puuttumisen ja normien tulkinnan. Tuomiovallan riippumattomuuden periaate valtiosääntöperiaatteena suojaa toisaalta tuomioistuinten ratkaisutoimintaa suhteessa toimeenpano- ja lainsäädäntövaltaan, mutta vastaavasti asettaa rajoituksia myös tuomiovallan puuttumiselle lainsäädäntö- ja hallintotehtäviin. Tuomiovallan riippumattomuus on periaatteena melko abstrakti; samoin kuin sitä koskeva perussäännös PL 3 §:n 3 momentissa, mutta periaatetta täsmentävät erityisesti PL 21 §:ssä säädetty perusoikeus sekä useat PL 9 luvun säännökset (PL 98–103 §). Tuomioistuinten riippumattomuus on liitettävissä erityisesti oikeudenmukaisen oikeudenkäynnin vaatimuksiin kansainvälisissä ihmisoikeussopimuksissa ja niitä koskevaan tulkintakäytäntöön. Kysymys on tällöin erityisesti luottamuksesta tuomioistuinten puolueettomuuteen eikä merkitystä ole annettu esimerkiksi vallanjaon periaatteelle sinänsä. YK:n ihmisoikeuskomitea on myös todennut, että riippumattomuuden vaatimus on pakottava. Eduskunnan perustuslakivaliokunnan PL 3 §:n 3 momenttia koskevissa tulkintakannanotoissa on todettu, että riippumattomuuden kannalta ongelmallista oli mm. veroviranomaisen mahdollisuus korvata tuomioistuimen ratkaisu omalla päätöksellään ja siten välillisesti muuttaa tuomioistuimen ratkaisua. Toisaalta PL 3 §:n kanssa ristiriidassa oli sääntely, jossa viranomaisen toimivallassa oli päättää, onko ylemmän oikeusasteen myöhemmällä ratkaisulla prejudikaattiarvoa suhteessa alemman tuomioistuimen päätökseen. Tuomioistuinten riippumattomuuden kannalta ei ole asianmukaista myöskään määritellä tuomioistuimelle menettelyllisiä vaatimuksia tai rajoituksia, jotka puuttuisivat oikeudenmukaisen oikeudenkäynnin edellytyksiin. Myös tuomarin asemaa turvaavat muut perustuslaintasoiset järjestelyt (tuomarin erityistä virassapysymisoikeutta koskeva säännös PL 103 §:ssä ja erityinen nimittämisjärjestelmä PL 58 §:ssä ja 102 §:ssä) johtuvat ennen muuta tuomiovallan riippumattomuuden periaatteesta. Tuomarin asema virkamiehenä on muita virkamiehiä turvatumpi PL 103 §:n säännöksen johdosta ja virkasuhteen pysyvyyden vaatimuksella voidaan perustella myös tuomareita koskevia virkamiesoikeudellisia erityisjärjestelyitä. Yksittäinen tuomari on tuomitsemistehtävässään riippumaton myös päällikkötuomarista. Häneen voidaan kuitenkin kohdistaa työnjohdollisia toimenpiteitä. Riippumattomuus ei myöskään suojaa tuomarin henkilökohtaisia näkemyksiä viranhoidon vaatimuksista esimerkiksi virkatehtävien toimittamisen tapaa, järjestystä ja niihin käytettävää aikaa koskevissa kysymyksissä. Valtion virkamieslakiin (750/1994) tulossa olevan muutoksen jälkeen (HE 33/2008 vp.) tuomarille voitaisiin antaa myös virkamieslain 24 §:n mukainen kirjallinen varoitus. Varoituksen antaminen ei kuitenkaan voi perustua näkemyseroihin laintulkinnasta vaan että sen perusteena tulee olla yksinomaan virkavelvollisuuksien laiminlyöminen tai muu niiden vastainen toiminta. Townsend's first ionization coefficients have been measured in corssed electric and magnetic fields for values of B/p ranging from 0.013 TESLA. TORR-1 to 0.064 TESLA.TORR-1 and for 103 x 102¿ E/p 331 x 102 V.M-1. TORR-1 in oxygen and for 122 x 102¿ E/pÂ488 x 102 V.M-1.TORR-1 for dry air. The values of effective collision frequencies determined from the equivalent pressure (pe) concept generally increase with E/p at constant B/p and decrease with increasing B/p at constant E/p. Effective collision frequencies determined from measured sparking potentials at high values of E/p increase with decreasing E/pe. The drift velocity and mean energy of electrons in oxygen in crossed electric and magnetic fields have been derived.

Vibrational stability of a large flexible, structurally damped spacecraft subject to large rigid body rotations is analysed modelling the system as an elastic continuum. Using solution of rigid body attitude motion under torque free conditions and modal analysis, the vibrational equations are reduced to ordinary differential equations with time-varying coefficients. Stability analysis is carried out using Floquet theory and Sonin-Polya theorem. The cases of spinning and non-spinning spacecraft idealized as a flexible beam plate undergoing simple structural vibration are analysed in detail. The critical damping required for stabilization is shown to be a function of the spacecraft's inertia ratio and the level of disturbance.

A general method for the development of valid lower bound solutions to uniformly distributed and orthotropically reinforced rectangular concrete slabs obeying normal moment criterion is described. General expressions for moment field have been obtained for nine cases of slabs having all combinations of simply supported and clamped-edge conditions. The lower bound collapse loads have been compared with the upper bound values obtained by the yield line theory. The paper also focuses attention to the need for the development of valid upper bound solutions with the satisfaction of kinematical admissibility and the flow rules associated with the normal moment criterion.

INTRODUCTION There is a paucity of research investigating the scar outcome of children with partial thickness burns. The aim of this study was to assess the scar outcome of children with partial thickness burns who received a silver dressing acutely. METHOD Children aged 0-15 years with an acute partial thickness burn, ≤10% TBSA were included. Children were originally recruited for an RCT investigating three dressings for partial thickness burns. Children were assessed at 3 and 6 months after re-epithelialization. 3D photographs were taken of the burn site, POSAS was completed and skin thickness was measured using ultrasound imaging. RESULTS Forty-three children returned for 3 and 6 month follow-ups or returned a photo. Days to re-epithelialization was a significant predictor of skin/scar quality at 3 and 6 months (p<0.01). Patient-rated color and observer-rated vascularity and pigmentation POSAS scores were comparable at 3 months (color vs. vascularity 0.88, p<0.001; color vs. pigmentation 0.64, p<0.001), but patients scored higher than the observer at 6 months (color vs. vascularity 0.57, p<0.05; color vs. pigmentation 0.15, p=0.60). Burn depth was significantly correlated with skin thickness (r=0.51, p<0.01). Hypopigmentation of the burn site was present in 25.8% of children who re-epithelialized in ≤2 weeks. CONCLUSION This study has provided information on outcomes for children with partial thickness burns and highlighted a need for further education of this population.

The rates of base-catalyzed hydrolysis of pseudo esters derived from y-keto acids show strikingly poor sensitivity to the nature of the leaving group.la The rates vary in the narrow range of about 12-fold as contrasted to a 103-fold spread of the corresponding benzoate esters. The results presented are consistent with a rate-determining formation of a tetrahedral intermediate (11) and i t s rapid collapse, by the cleavage of the lactone ring in a fast step.

Of the many factors that govern the settling phenomenon, the flow velocity in the settling tanks can be controlled favorably by fixing suitably designed weirs at the outlets of the tanks. The velocity at the bottom should not dislodge the particles that have already settled. These requirements might be met with by velocities which are controlled to be constant with respect to the depth of flow, or velocities which reduce linearly with increasing depth or velocities that vary inversely with the depth. To achieve these types of velocity control, new proportional weirs have been designed. Very near to the outlet of the tank, over a small length, the flow was found to be turbulent and noncompliant with the expected type of velocity control. This small length of the disturbance may be provided over and above the theoretical settling length of the tank, for efficient sedimentation.

We examine the following question: Suppose R is a principal ideal domain, and that F is an n × m matrix with elements in R, with n>m. When does there exist an m × n matrix G such that GF = Im, and such that certain prescribed minors of G equal zero? We show that there is a simple necessary condition for the existence of such a G, but that this condition is not sufficient in general. However, if the set of minors of G that are required to be zero has a certain pattern, then the condition is necessary as well as sufficient. We then show that the pattern mentioned above arises naturally in connection with the question of the existence of decentralized stabilizing controllers for a given plant. Hence our result allows us to derive an extremely simple proof of the fact that a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of decentralized stabilizing controllers is the absence of unstable decentralized fixed modes, as well as to derive a very clean expression for these fixed modes. In addition to the application to decentralized stabilization, we believe that the result is of independent interest.

Protein phosphorylation regulates a wide variety of cellular processes. Thus, we hypothesize that single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that may modulate protein phosphorylation could affect osteoporosis risk. Based on a previous conventional genome-wide association (GWA) study, we conducted a three-stage meta-analysis targeting phosphorylation-related SNPs (phosSNPs) for femoral neck (FN)-bone mineral density (BMD), total hip (HIP)-BMD, and lumbar spine (LS)-BMD phenotypes. In stage 1, 9593 phosSNPs were meta-analyzed in 11,140 individuals of various ancestries. Genome-wide significance (GWS) and suggestive significance were defined by α = 5.21 × 10–6 (0.05/9593) and 1.00 × 10–4, respectively. In stage 2, nine stage 1–discovered phosSNPs (based on α = 1.00 × 10–4) were in silico meta-analyzed in Dutch, Korean, and Australian cohorts. In stage 3, four phosSNPs that replicated in stage 2 (based on α = 5.56 × 10–3, 0.05/9) were de novo genotyped in two independent cohorts. IDUA rs3755955 and rs6831280, and WNT16 rs2707466 were associated with BMD phenotypes in each respective stage, and in three stages combined, achieving GWS for both FN-BMD (p = 8.36 × 10–10, p = 5.26 × 10–10, and p = 3.01 × 10–10, respectively) and HIP-BMD (p = 3.26 × 10–6, p = 1.97 × 10–6, and p = 1.63 × 10–12, respectively). Although in vitro studies demonstrated no differences in expressions of wild-type and mutant forms of IDUA and WNT16B proteins, in silico analyses predicts that WNT16 rs2707466 directly abolishes a phosphorylation site, which could cause a deleterious effect on WNT16 protein, and that IDUA phosSNPs rs3755955 and rs6831280 could exert indirect effects on nearby phosphorylation sites. Further studies will be required to determine the detailed and specific molecular effects of these BMD-associated non-synonymous variants. © 2015 American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.

The responses of the field mouse Mus booduga to shifts in schedules of LD cycles were monitored and the results were interpreted with the help of a PRC constructed for the same species. The results reveal that, M. booduga reentrained faster with a lesser number of transients after delay shifts than advance shifts, thus exhibiting “asymmetry effect.” A positive correlation was observed between the number of transients and the number of hours of shift. In most of the shifts, the sign of the transients (negative for delaying transients and positive for advancing transients) coincided with the direction of the shift. Interestingly, 11 and 12 h of advance shifting resulted in delaying transients. An 11-h advance shift can also be interpreted as a 13-h delay. Reentrainment through delaying transients is faster as compared to reentrainment through advancing transients. Thus, this animal might have taken a “shorter route,” as proved by the fact that an 11-h advance shift has evoked delaying transients. But a 13-h advance shift evoked only advancing transients. This prompts us to speculate that there may be a “phase jump” in M. booduga. Further, irrespective of whether L or D has been doubled in a 12-h shift, both evoked only delaying transients.

Isothermal titration calorimetry measurements of the binding of 2′-fucosyllactose, lactose, N-acetyllactosamine, galactopyranose, 2-acetamido-2-deoxygalactopyranoside, methyl α-N-dansylgalactosaminide (Me-α-DNS-GalN), methyl α-D-galactopyranoside, methyl β-D-galactopyranoside, and fucose to Erythrina corallodendron lectin (ECorL), a dimer with one binding site per subunit, were performed at 283-286 and 297-299 K. The site binding enthalpies, ΔHb, with the exception of Me-α-DNS-GalN, are the same at both temperatures and range from −47.1 ± 1.0 kJ mol−1 for N-acetyllactosamine to −4.4 ± 0.3 kJ mol−1 for fucose, and the site binding constants range from 3.82 ± 0.9 × 105 M−1 for Me-α-DNS-GalN at 283.2 K to 0.46 ± 0.05 × 103 M−1 for fucose at 297.2 K. The binding reactions are mainly enthalpically driven except for fucose and exhibit enthalpy-entropy compensation. The binding enthalpies of the disaccharides are about twice the binding enthalpies of the monosaccharides in contrast to concanavalin A where the binding enthalpies do not double for the disaccharides. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements show that denaturation of the ECorL dimer results in dissociation into its monomer subunits. The binding constants from the increase in denaturation temperature of ECorL in the presence of saccharides are in agreement with values from isothermal titration calorimetry results. The thermal denaturation of ECorL occurs around 333 K, well below the 344-360 K denaturation temperature of other legume lectins of similar size and tertiary structure, undoubtedly due to the difference in its quaternary structure relative to other legume lectins. This is also apparent from the independent unfolding of its two domains.
