A preliminary report on the manganese nodule field southwest of Western Australia published in this Journal recently (Frakes, Exon and Granath, 1977) quoted chemical analyses which were carried out on air-dried material. Significantly higher metal values have been recorded in some later analyses done on nodules dried at 105°C. Tests have shown that the ground, air-dried material retains considerable moisture, which accounts for the higher metal values of the later analyses. The average water content (after drying at 105°C) has been determined at 16 percent. The relevant chemical data now available on this material are summarised in the accompanying table: in this table metal values (by atomic absorption spectrophotometry) have been recalculated assuming a moisture content of 16 percent.

The map covers the Cathedral Massif Glacier with its proglacial area and the surrounding terrain - altogether an area of about 5.2 square kilometers. The small cirque glacier is located in the Cathedral Massif on the continental slope of the northern Boundary Range in British Columbia, Canada. The field survey and the terrestrial photogrammetry was carried out in July 1977. In addition aerial photos taken in August 1975 were used for the photogrammetric plotting. Due to the lack of connection with the official Canadian geodetic net, a local net was used. The main objective of the mapping was to document the present-day glacier with its specific topographical features of the forefield. The map is printed in five colours in offset. The surface area of the glacier was 1.71 square kilometers in 1977 and has further reduced since then. During the stage of "maximum" neoglacial extend, the glacier area must have been close to 2.8 square kilometers.

The primary geochemical data of the transect visited during the cruise Meteor M76/1. The stations include GeoB 12802, 12803, 12808, 12811, and 12815. The geochemical data include pore-water ferrous ion, sulfate, dissolved inorganic carbon, methane, and molecular hydrogen.

Near-surface sediments from the equatorial east Atlantic and the Norwegian Sea exhibit pronounced shear strength maxima in profiles from the peak Holocene and Pleistocene. These semi-indurated layers start to occur at 8-102 cm below the sediment surface and can be explained neither by the modal composition nor by the effective overburden pressure of the sediments. However, scanning electron microscope and microprobe data exhibit micritic crusts and crystal carpets, which are clearly restricted to (undisturbed) samples from indurated layers and form a manifest explanation for their origin. The minerals precipitated comprise calcite, aragonite, and in samples more proximal to the African continent SiO2 needles, and needles of as yet unidentified K-Mg-Fe-Al silicates, crusts of which dominate the indurated layers in the Norwegian Sea. By their stratigraphic position in deep-sea sediments the carbonate-based shear strength maxima are tentatively ascribed to dissolved adjacent pteropod layers from the early Holocene and hence to short-lived no-analogue events of early diagenesis. Possibly, they have been controlled by a reduced organic carbon flux, leading to increased aragonite preservation in the deep sea.
