This paper presents an optimization-based approach to the design of asymmetrical filter structures having the maximum number of return- or insertion-loss ripples in the passband such as those based upon Chebyshev function prototypes. The proposed approach. has the following advantages over the general purpose optimization techniques adopted previously such as: less frequency sampling is required, optimization is carried out with respect to the Chebyshev (or minimax) criterion, the problem of local minima does not arise, and optimization is usually only required for the passband. When implemented around an accurate circuit simulation, the method can be used to include all the effects of discontinuities, junctions, fringing, etc. to reduce the amount of tuning required in the final filter. The design of asymmetrical ridged-waveguide bandpass filters is considered as an example. Measurements on a fabricated filter confirm the accuracy of the design procedure.

In this article, we present the theory and a design methodology for a unable Quasi-Lumped Quadrature Coupler (QLQC). Because of its topology, the coupler is simply reconfigured by switching the bias of two varactor diodes via a very simple DC bias circuitry. No additional capacitors or inductors are required. A prototype at 3.5 GHz is etched on a 0.130-mm-thick layer substrate with a dielectric material of relative permittivity of 2.22. The simulated and measured scattering parameters are, presented. A pin diode-loaded active doubly periodic flat strip FSS is shown to act as a dynamic screen. It is shown that by means of d.c. bias control, we can utilize the screen in, (1) transmission mode as a dual band electromagnetic shutter, or with the inclusion of a ground plane in reflection mode, (is (2) it dual band refection canceller. (3) an amplitude shift keying (ASK) spatial modulator. The properties of the FSS are characterized using a specially designed parallel plate waveguide simulator that permits normal incidence excitation of the FSS under test. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals. A simple method for the selection of the appropriate choice of surface-mounted loading resistor required for a thin radar absorber based on a high-impedance surface (HIS) principle is demonstrated. The absorber consists of a HIS, (artificial magnetic ground plane), thickness 0.03 lambda(0) surface-loaded resistive-elements interconnecting a textured surface of square patches. The properties of absorber are characterized under normal incident using a parallel plate waveguide measurement technique over the operating frequency range of 2.6-3.95 GHz. We show that for this arrangement return loss and bandwidth are insensitive to +/- 2% tolerance variations in surface resistor values about the value predicted using the method elaborated in this letter, and that better than -28 dB at 3.125 GHz reflection loss can be obtained with an effective working bandwidth of up to 11% at -10 dB reflection loss. This paper describes the application of multivariate regression techniques to the Tennessee Eastman benchmark process for modelling and fault detection. Two methods are applied : linear partial least squares, and a nonlinear variant of this procedure using a radial basis function inner relation. The performance of the RBF networks is enhanced through the use of a recently developed training algorithm which uses quasi-Newton optimization to ensure an efficient and parsimonious network; details of this algorithm can be found in this paper. The PLS and PLS/RBF methods are then used to create on-line inferential models of delayed process measurements. As these measurements relate to the final product composition, these models suggest that on-line statistical quality control analysis should be possible for this plant. The generation of `soft sensors' for these measurements has the further effect of introducing a redundant element into the system, redundancy which can then be used to generate a fault detection and isolation scheme for these sensors. This is achieved by arranging the sensors and models in a manner comparable to the dedicated estimator scheme of Clarke et al. 1975, IEEE Trans. Pero. Elect. Sys., AES-14R, 465-473. The effectiveness of this scheme is demonstrated on a series of simulated sensor and process faults, with full detection and isolation shown to be possible for sensor malfunctions, and detection feasible in the case of process faults. Suggestions for enhancing the diagnostic capacity in the latter case are covered towards the end of the paper.

We present a multimodal detection and tracking algorithm for sensors composed of a camera mounted between two microphones. Target localization is performed on color-based change detection in the video modality and on time difference of arrival (TDOA) estimation between the two microphones in the audio modality. The TDOA is computed by multiband generalized cross correlation (GCC) analysis. The estimated directions of arrival are then postprocessed using a Riccati Kalman filter. The visual and audio estimates are finally integrated, at the likelihood level, into a particle filter (PF) that uses a zero-order motion model, and a weighted probabilistic data association (WPDA) scheme. We demonstrate that the Kalman filtering (KF) improves the accuracy of the audio source localization and that the WPDA helps to enhance the tracking performance of sensor fusion in reverberant scenarios. The combination of multiband GCC, KF, and WPDA within the particle filtering framework improves the performance of the algorithm in noisy scenarios. We also show how the proposed audiovisual tracker summarizes the observed scene by generating metadata that can be transmitted to other network nodes instead of transmitting the raw images and can be used for very low bit rate communication. Moreover, the generated metadata can also be used to detect and monitor events of interest.

In this paper, we present an inertial-sensor-based monitoring system for measuring the movement of human upper limbs. Two wearable inertial sensors are placed near the wrist and elbow joints, respectively. The measurement drift in segment orientation is dramatically reduced after a Kalman filter is applied to estimate inclinations using accelerations and turning rates from gyroscopes. Using premeasured lengths of the upper and lower arms, we compute the position of the wrist and elbow joints via a proposed kinematic model. Experimental results demonstrate that this new motion capture system, in comparison to an optical motion tracker, possesses an RMS position error of less than 0.009 m, with a drift of less than 0.005 ms-1 in five daily activities. In addition, the RMS angle error is less than 3??. This indicates that the proposed approach has performed well in terms of accuracy and reliability.

Self-compacting concrete (SCC) flows into place and around obstructions under its own weight to fill the formwork completely and self-compact without any segregation and blocking. Elimination of the need for compaction leads to better quality concrete and substantial improvement of working conditions. This investigation aimed to show possible applicability of genetic programming (GP) to model and formulate the fresh and hardened properties of self-compacting concrete (SCC) containing pulverised fuel ash (PFA) based on experimental data. Twenty-six mixes were made with 0.38 to 0.72 water-to-binder ratio (W/B), 183–317 kg/m3 of cement content, 29–261 kg/m3 of PFA, and 0 to 1% of superplasticizer, by mass of powder. Parameters of SCC mixes modelled by genetic programming were the slump flow, JRing combined to the Orimet, JRing combined to cone, and the compressive strength at 7, 28 and 90 days. GP is constructed of training and testing data using the experimental results obtained in this study. The results of genetic programming models are compared with experimental results and are found to be quite accurate. GP has showed a strong potential as a feasible tool for modelling the fresh properties and the compressive strength of SCC containing PFA and produced analytical prediction of these properties as a function as the mix ingredients. Results showed that the GP model thus developed is not only capable of accurately predicting the slump flow, JRing combined to the Orimet, JRing combined to cone, and the compressive strength used in the training process, but it can also effectively predict the above properties for new mixes designed within the practical range with the variation of mix ingredients.

This paper reports a study carried out to assess the impact of the use of self-compacting concrete (SCC) on bond and interfacial properties around steel reinforcement in practical concrete element. The pull-out tests were carried out to determine bond strength between reinforcing steel bar and concrete, and the depth-sensing nano-indentation technique was used to evaluate the elastic modulus and micro-strength of the interracial transition zone (ITZ) around steel reinforcement. The bond and interracial properties around deformed steel bars in different SCC mixes with strength grades of 35 MPa and 60 MPa (C35, C60) were examined together with those in conventional vibrated reference concrete with the same strength grades. The results showed that the maximum bond strength decreased when the diameter of the steel bar increased from 12 to 20 mm. The normalised bond strengths of the SCC mixes were found to be about 10-40% higher than those of the reference mixes for both bar diameters (12 and 20 mm). The study of the interfacial properties revealed that the elastic modulus and the micro-strength of the ITZ were lower on the bottom side of a horizontal steel bar than on the top side, particularly for the vibrated reference concrete. The difference of ITZ properties between top and bottom side of the horizontal steel bar appeared to be less pronounced for the SCC mixes than for the corresponding reference mixes.

The use of self-compacting concrete (SCC) facilitates the placing of concrete by eliminating the need for compaction by vibration. Given the highly flowable nature of such concrete, care is required to ensure excellent filling ability and adequate stability. This is especially important in deep structural members and wall elements where concrete can block the flow, segregate and exhibit bleeding and settlement which can result in local defects that can reduce mechanical properties, durability and quality of surface finish. This paper shows results of an investigation of fresh properties of self-compacting concrete, such as filling ability measured by slump flow and flow time (measured by Orimet) and plastic fresh settlement measured in a column. The SCC mixes incorporated various combinations of fine inorganic powders and admixtures. The slump flow of all SCCs was greater than 580 mm and the time in which the slumping concrete reached 500 rnm was less than 3 s. The flow time was less than 5 s. The results on SCCs were compared to a control mix. The compressive strength and splitting tensile strength of SCCs were also measured. The effects of water/powder ratio, slump and nature of the sand on the fresh settlement were also evaluated. The volume of coarse aggregate and the dosage of superphsticizer were kept constant. It can be concluded that the settlement of fresh self-compacting concrete increased with the increase in water/powder ratio and slump. The nature of sand influenced the maximum settlement.

A dynamic mathematical model for simulating the coupled heat and moisture migration through multilayer porous building materials was proposed. Vapor content and temperature were chosen as the principal driving potentials. The discretization of the governing equations was done by the finite difference approach. A new experimental set-up was also developed in this study. The evolution of transient temperature and moisture distributions inside specimens were measured. The method for determining the temperature gradient coefficient was also presented. The moisture diffusion coefficient, temperature gradient coefficient, sorption–desorption isotherms were experimentally evaluated for some building materials (sandstone and lime-cement mortar). The model was validated by comparing with the experimental data with good agreement. Another advantage of the method lies in the fact that the required transport properties for predicting the non-isothermal moisture flow only contain the vapor diffusion coefficient and temperature gradient coefficient. They are relatively simple, and can be easily determined.

The simultaneous heat and moisture transfer in the building envelope has an important influence on the indoor environment and the overall performance of buildings. In this paper, a model for predicting whole building heat and moisture transfer was presented. Both heat and moisture transfer in the building envelope and indoor air were simultaneously considered; their interactions were modeled. The coupled model takes into account most of the main hygrothermal effects in buildings. The coupled system model was implemented in MATLAB-Simulink, and validated by using a series of published testing tools. The new program was applied to investigate the moisture transfer effect on indoor air humidity and building energy consumption under different climates. The results show that the use of more detailed simulation routines can result in improvements to the building's design for energy optimisation through the choice of proper hygroscopic materials, which would not be indicated by simpler calculation techniques.
