IOWA Students with Autism: Who are they, how are they served, and are they achieving? October 2012

The Iowa Department of Education completed two studies in 2011-2012. The studies addressed several areas of need: (a) identifying students likely on the Autism Spectrum, (b) examining where large numbers of students on the Autism Spectrum are attending school, (c) evaluating the services being provided to students and the location of those services, (d) determining the extent to which services are evidence-based, (e) determining if services are sufficient to effect change needed to reach performance levels needed to access life opportunity, (f) understanding the kinds of problems being addressed through the Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for the students identified, (g) examining the severity of behavior problems in the sample, and (h) examining academic proficiency and growth for students likely to be on the Autism Spectrum.

Evaluation of In-Use Fuel Economy and On-Board Emissions for Hybrid and Regular CyRide Transit Buses, October 2012

The objective of this project was to evaluate the in-use fuel economy and emission differences between hybrid-electric and conventional transit buses for the Ames, Iowa transit authority, CyRide. These CyRide buses were deployed in the fall of 2010. Fuel economy was compared for the hybrid and control buses. Several older bus types were also available and were included in the analysis. Hybrid buses had the highest fuel economy for all time periods for all bus types. Hybrid buses had a fuel economy that was 11.8 percent higher than control buses overall, 12.2 percent higher than buses with model years 2007 and newer, 23.4 percent higher than model years 2004 through 2006, 10.2 percent higher than model years 1998 through 2003, 38.1 percent higher than model years 1994 through 1997, 36.8 percent higher than model years 1991 through 1993, and 36.8 percent higher for model years pre-1991. On-road emissions were also compared for three of the hybrid buses and two control buses using a portable emissions monitor. On-average, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and hybrid carbon emissions were much higher for the control buses than for the hybrid buses. However, on average nitrogen oxide emissions were higher for the hybrid buses.

Final report on the Portable Weather Station, March 2012

This station was required to have air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, and pavement temperature sensors of similar quality to the traditional RWIS sensors, have an integrated solar powered battery system, and be trailer-mounted for ease of transport. The station was tested by the Iowa DOT for basic reliability and sensor performance for a month and a half in Ames, Iowa before being moved to near Osceola, Iowa in early February 2010 for further field testing and evaluation. DOT field maintenance staff was able to successfully set up the station with minimal instruction and found the station to be relatively intuitive in its installation. Air temperature, wind speed, and wind direction observations from the station were compared to a nearby RWIS station and had good agreement. Pavement temperature readings were compared to sites within 40 miles of the station, and the readings correlated. The station has had good reliability.

Deu anys de seguiment demogràfic i genètic d"Stachys maritima a Catalunya (2001-2010). Implicacions per a un pla de recuperació.

Ten years of demographic and genetic monitoring of Stachys maritima in Catalonia (2001-2010). Implications for a recovery plan.- Stachys maritima is a species typical of the coastal dunes, with a wide distribution within the Mediterranean Basin. In spite of this, the species shows a clear regression. In Catalonia, it has been observed an important reduction of its populations since early 20th century, where it has disappeared from several localities in which it was relatively common (Tarragonès, Barcelonès). Herein we present the results of the demographic monitoring of the species during the last 10 years (2001-2010) in the known localities in Catalonia. Besides corroborating the disappearance (northern Sant Martí d'Empúries), the re-discovering (Llobregat Delta beach) and the detection of new populations (inner dunes of the Montgrí), a large year-to-year fluctuation of the monitored populations is stated; the possible reasons are discussed. In addition, the present work also includes the results of the allozyme diversity analysis of the new detected populations as well as the rediscoveries of the period 2004-2008, which were not included in a former study of genetic diversity carried out in 2002-2003. It is necessary to emphasize that the contribution of the new populations to the genetic diversity of Stachys maritima is very small, which can be attributed to their limited population size and /or to founder effects. Despite that the species is included in the Annex 2 ('En Perill d'Extinció') within the Catàleg de Flora Amenaçada de Catalunya (Catalogue of Endangered Flora of Catalonia), and some 'soft' conservation measures have been applied at local level (signposting of the beach accesses, environmental education, etc.) coupled with other more significant measures (e.g. translocation of individuals discovered in an artificial sandbank), it would be necessary the coordinated action and the scientific support of any initiative of conservation that could be carried out. The general frame to initiate actions of conservation should be the recovery plan of Stachys maritima, whose draft and application is mandatory in accordance to the Catàleg.

Iowa Public Library Statistics, July 1, 2011-June 30, 2012

The 2010-2011 (FY11) edition of Iowa Public Library Statistics includes information on income, expenditures, collections, circulation, and other measures, including staff. Each section is arranged by size code, then alphabetically by city. The totals and percentiles for each size code grouping are given immediately following the alphabetical listings. Totals and medians for all reporting libraries are given at the end of each section. There are 543 libraries included in this publication; 525 submitted a report. The table of size codes (page 5) lists the libraries alphabetically. The following table lists the size code designations, the population range in each size code, the number of libraries reporting in each size code, and the total population of the reporting libraries in each size code. The total population served by the 543 libraries is 2,339,070. Population data is used to determine per capita figures throughout the publication.

Projecte d'idees per a la urbanització de la Rambla de la ciutat d'Asunció. Sant Andreu (Barcelona) 2010

El projecte de realitzar una rambla al barri de Baró de Viver en un tram del Carrer Ciutat d'Asunció sorgeix d'un taller de participació ciutadana que es du a terme l'any 2007 amb joves del barri vinculats al servei de dinamització de joves a l'Escola de l'Esperança, organitzat pel Centre de Recerca Polis (UB). La tipologia de rambla es decideix a partir d'un diagnòstic de l'espai públic del barri, on s'identifiquen aquells espais que són susceptibles d'algun tipus d'intervenció que millori la imatge de Baró de Viver.

Iowa Surveillance of Notifiable and Other Diseases Annual Report, 2010

Promoting and protecting the health of Iowans is the mission of the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH). Surveillance of notifiable health conditions is essential in establishing what, how, and when events impact the public’s health. Multiple divisions and bureaus are dedicated to accomplishing the goals of surveillance. In 2012, in addition to 850 cases reported with no lab results, there were more than 79,000 laboratory results of infectious diseases and conditions submitted to IDPH disease surveillance programs. IDPH also investigates non-infectious conditions related to lead, occupational, and environmental hazards like carbon monoxide. Approximately 100,000 blood lead test results were reported to IDPH in 2012.

Del cine épico al cine social: el universo metafílmico en También la lluvia (2010) de Icíar Bollaín

El siguiente artículo consiste en un análisis de la película También la lluvia de Icíar Bollaín centrado en el cuestionamiento de dos géneros cinematográficos pertenecientes al modo de significación realista: el cine épico y el cine social. Por un lado nos encontramos ante un uso crítico de las narrativas fílmicas convencionales sobre la colonización, por otro se plantea una reflexión sobre el cine social como una herramienta de cambio político. Una de las claves interpretativas del filme será el papel de María, un personaje secundario a la sombra de los protagonistas masculinos, que filma un documental sobre el rodaje desviando la mirada hacia la “Guerra del Agua”. Se mostrará cómo Bollaín visibiliza la mirada del “observador ideal”, explorando al mismo tiempo la violencia de la mirada cinematográfica y los límites morales de la creación artística.
