L-Lysyl-L-glutamic acid dihydrate, C11N3O5H21·2H2O, crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21 with a = 12.474(2), b = 5.020(1), c = 13.157(2) Å, β= 114.69(1)° and Z = 2. The crystal structure was solved by direct methods and refined to an R value of 0.037 using full matrix least-squares method. The molecule exists as a double zwitterion with both the amino and carboxyl groups ionised. The peptide has a folded conformation with its Lys residue trans and Glu residue gauche−gauche+. The side chains of the Lys and Glu residues correspond to all trans and folded (g−g−g−) conformations respectively. The terminal carboxyl group forms hydrogen bonds with the ξ-amino group of the lysine side chain. The head-to-tail interaction often seen in peptide crystals is absent in the present structure. In the extended crystal structure water molecules form channels along the b direction and are enclosed within helically arranged hydrogen bonds formed by the lysine side chain and the peptide backbone.

The coat protein of belladonna mottle virus (a tymovirus) was cleaved by trypsin and chymotrypsin, and the peptides were separated by high performance liquid chromatography using a combination of gel permeation, reverse phase, and ion pair chromatography. The peptides were sequenced manually using the 4-N, N-dimethylaminoazobenzene-4'-isothiocyanate/phenyl isothiocyanate double-coupling method. The chymotryptic peptides were aligned by overlapping sequences of tryptic peptides and by homology with another tymovirus, eggplant mosaic virus. The belladonna mottle virus is more closely related to eggplant mosaic virus than to turnip yellow mosaic virus, the type member of this group, as evident from the sequence homologies of 57 and 32%, respectively. The accumulation of basic residues at the amino terminus implicated in RNA-protein interactions in many spherical plant viruses was absent in all the three sequences. Interestingly, the amino-terminal region is the least conserved among the tymoviruses. The longest stretch of conserved sequence between belladonna mottle virus and eggplant mosaic virus was residues 34-44, whereas it was residues 96-102 in the case of belladonna mottle virus and turnip yellow mosaic virus. A tetrapeptide in the region (residues 154-157) was found to be common for all the three sequences. It is possible that these conserved regions (residues 34-44, 96-102, 154-157) are involved in either intersubunit or RNA-protein interactions.

Phase-pure samples of barium magnesiotitanate, BaMg6Ti6O19 (BMT) are prepared by the wet chemical `gel-carbonate' method wherein the formation of BMT is complete below 950 degrees C as a result of the reaction between nanoparticles of BaCO3, MgO and TiO2. BMT powders are sintered at 1350-1450 C to dense ceramics. Extensive melting is noticed when the bulk composition falls between 0.4MgTiO(3)+0.6BaTiO(3)) and (0.6MgTiO(3)+0.4BaTiO(3)) along the MgTiO3-BaTiO3 tie-line in BaO-MgO-TiO2, phase diagram. Dielectric properties of sintered (BMT) ceramics have been investigated which showed epsilon similar or equal to 39 at 2 GHz, quality factor Q >= 10,000 and positive temperature coefficient of dielectric constant around 370 ppm degrees C-1.

The angiospermous plant parasite Cuscuta derives reduced carbon and nitrogen compounds primarily from its host. Free amino acids along Cuscuta vines in three zones, viz., 0 to 5 cm, 5 to 15 cm, and 15 to 30 cm, which in a broad sense represent the region of cell division, cell elongation and differentiation and vascular tissue differentiation respectively, were quantitatively estimated. The free amino acid content was the highest in the 0 to 5 cm region and progressively decreased along the posterior regions of the vine. The haustorial region showed the lowest content of free amino acids. In general, the free amino acid content in samples collected at 7 p.m. was found to be higher than that in the samples collected at 7 a.m. Three basic amino acids, histidine, the uncommon amino acid γ-hydroxyarginine, and arginine constituted more than 50% of the total free amino acids in all the zones studied except the haustorial region. Aspartic acid and glutamic acid constituted the major portion in the acidic and neutral fraction of amino acids. Glutamine, asparagine, threonine, and serine were eluted together and occurred in substantial amounts. γ-Hydroxyarginine constituted the largest fraction in the cut end exudate of Cuscuta and presumably appeared to be the major form of transport amino acid. γ-Hydroxyarginine was also a major constituent of the basic amino acids in Cuscuta vines parasitizing host plants from widely separated families, suggesting that this amino acid is a biosynthetic product of the parasite rather than that of the hosts. Also, U-14C arginine was converted to γ-hydroxyarginine by cut Cuscuta vines, suggesting that γ-hydroxyarginine is synthesized de novo from arginine by Cuscuta.

PTFE specimens were slid against an EN24 disc. The unworn and worn surfaces as well as the wear debris were examined by X-ray diffraction. Sliding was found to introduce (i) shrinkage of the unit cell, (ii) enlargement of crystallites and (iii) residual stresses in the slid PTFE surface. No conformational changes in the 157 helix could be observed due to sliding. The wear debris was found to be 1 mgrm thick warped laminates.

Stabilized forms of heteropolyacids (HPAs), namely phosphomolybdic acid (PMA), phosphotungstic acid (PTA), and silicotungstic acid (STA), are incorporated into poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) cross-linked with sulfosuccinic acid (SSA) to form mixed-matrix membranes for application in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Bridging SSA between PVA molecules not only strengthens the network but also facilitates proton conduction in HPAs. The mixed-matrix membranes are characterized for their mechanical stability, sorption capability, ion-exchange capacity, and wetting in conjunction with their proton conductivity, methanol permeability, and DMFC performance. Methanol-release kinetics is studied ex situ by volume-localized NMR spectroscopy (employing point-resolved spectroscopy'') with the results clearly demonstrating that the incorporation of certain inorganic fillers in PVA-SSA viz., STA and PTA, retards the methanol-release kinetics under osmotic drag compared to Nafion, although PVA-SSA itself exhibits a still lower methanol permeability. The methanol crossover rate for PVA-SSA-HPA-bridged-mixed-matrix membranes decreases dramatically with increasing current density rendering higher DMFC performance in relation to a DMFC using a pristine PVA-SSA membrane. A peak power density of 150 mW/cm(2) at a load current density of 500 mA/cm(2) is achieved for the DMFC using a PVA-SSA-STA-bridged-mixed-matrix-membrane electrolyte. This dissertation is an onomastic study of variation in women s name phrases in official documents in Finland during the period 1780−1930. The aim is to discuss from a socio-onomastic perspective both the changeover from patronymics to inherited family names and the use of surnames after marriage (i.e. whether women adopted their husbands family names or retained their maiden names), before new laws in this area entered into force in Finland in the early 20th century. In 1920, a law on family names that required fixed names put an end to the use of the patronymic as a person s only surname. After 1929, it was no longer possible for a married woman to retain her maiden name. Methodologically, to explain this development from a socio-onomastic perspective, I have based my study on a syntactic-semantic analysis of the actual name phrases. To be able to demonstrate the extensive material, I have elaborated a scheme to divide the 115 different types of name phrases into 13 main categories. The analysis of the material for Helsinki is based on frequency calculations of the different types of name phrases every thirtieth year, as well as on describing variation in the structure and semantic content of the name phrases, e.g. social variation in the use of titles and epithets. In addition to this, by applying a biographic-genealogical method, I have conducted two case studies of the usage of women s name phrases in the two chosen families. The study is based on parish registers from the period 1780−1929, estate inventory documents from the period 1780−1928, registration forms for liberty of trade from the period 1880−1908, family announcements on newspapers from the period 1829−1888, gravestones from the period 1796−1929 and diaries from the periods 1799−1801 and 1818−1820 providing a corpus of 5 950 name phrases. The syntactic-semantic analysis has revealed the overall picture of various ways of denoting women in official documents. In Helsinki, towards the end of the 19th century, the use of inherited family names seems to be almost fully developed in official contexts. At the late 19th century, a patronymic still appears as the only surname of some working-class women whereas in the early 20th century patronymics were only entered in the parish register as a kind of middle name. In the beginning of the 19th century, most married women were still registered under their maiden names, with a few exceptions among the bourgeoisie and upper class. The comparative analysis of name phrases in diaries, however, indicates that the use of the husband s family name by married women was a much earlier phenomenon in private contexts than in official documents. Keywords: socio-onomastics, syntactic-semantic analysis, name phrase, patronymic, maiden name, husband s family name

Some theorems derived recently by the authors on the stability of multidimensional linear time varying systems are reported in this paper. To begin with, criteria based on Liapunovs direct method are stated. These are followed by conditions on the asymptotic behaviour and boundedness of solutions. Finally,L 2 andL ? stabilities of these systems are discussed. In conclusion, mention is made of some of the problems in aerospace engineering to which these theorems have been applied.

The Gibbs' energy change for the reaction, 3CoO (r.s.)+1/2O2(g)→Co3O4(sp), has been measured between 730 and 1250 K using a solid state galvanic cell: Pt, CuO+Cu2O|(CaO)ZrO2|CoO+Co3O4,Pt. The emf of this cell varies nonlinearly with temperature between 1075 and 1150 K, indicating a second or higher order phase transition in Co3O4around 1120 (±20) K, associated with an entropy change of ∼43 Jmol-1K-1. The phase transition is accompanied by an anomalous increase in lattice parameter and electrical conductivity. The cubic spinel structure is retained during the transition, which is caused by the change in CO+3 ions from low spin to high spin state. The octahedral site preference energy of CO+3 ion in the high spin state has been evaluated as -24.8 kJ mol-1. This is more positive than the value for CO+2 ion (-32.9 kJ mol-1). The cation distribution therefore changes from normal to inverse side during the phase transition. The transformation is unique, coupling spin unpairing in CO+3 ion with cation rearrangement on the spinel lattice, DTA in pure oxygen revealed a small peak corresponding to the transition, which could be differentiated from the large peak due to decomposition. TGA showed that the stoichiometry of oxide is not significantly altered during the transition. The Gibbs' energy of formation of Co3O4 from CoO and O2 below and above phase transition can be represented by the equations:ΔG0=-205,685+170.79T(±200) J mol-1(730-1080 K) and ΔG0=-157,235+127.53T(±200) J mol-1(1150-1250 K).

Third-order nonlinear absorption and refraction coefficients of a few-layer boron carbon nitride (BCN) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) suspensions have been measured at 3.2 eV in the femtosecond regime. Optical limiting behavior is exhibited by BCN as compared to saturable absorption in RGO. Nondegenerate time-resolved differential transmissions from BCN and RGO show different relaxation times. These differences in the optical nonlinearity and carrier dynamics are discussed in the light of semiconducting electronic band structure of BCN vis-a-vis the Dirac linear band structure of graphene. In situ polymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene with sol-gel-derived mesoporous carbon (MC) leading to a new composite and its subsequent impregnation with Pt nanoparticles for application in polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) is reported. The composite exhibits good dispersion and utilization of platinum nanoparticles akin to other commonly used microporous carbon materials, such as carbon black. Pt-supported MC-poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) composite also exhibits promising electrocatalytic activity toward oxygen reduction reaction, which is central to PEFCs. The PEFC with Pt-loaded MC-PEDOT support exhibits 75% of enhancement in its power density in relation to the PEFC with Pt-loaded pristine MC support while operating under identical conditions. It is conjectured that Pt-supported MC-PEDOT composite ameliorates PEFC performance/durability on repetitive potential cycling. (C) 2010 The Electrochemical Society.
