ABSTRACT: This dissertation aims to make a contribution to the development of tourism STP (Sao Tome and Principe). Several variables were regarded, such as the tourism experience, tourist satisfaction, tourism image and intention to recommend the region / country in order to gauge the perceptions of foreign tourists with regards to the evaluation of the tourism image, given that the country has a set of natural features for practice tourism. In this context, a survey was administered to tourists in the capital of São Tome and Principe, including hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, bars and the international airport of São Tomé during the months of March to May 2010. The developed study has two components, exploratory / descriptive and conclusive, with emphasis on qualitative and quantitative analysis. It is also used regression analysis, which allowed us to perceive the relationship between the variables identified, noting that the perception of global image, the positive word of mouth and intention to return depends on the identity of the place and food and beverages.

ABSTRACT: The Brand of a Nation also sells. The image of a country is, nowadays, an important asset for its economy. A brand is a promise made to the consumer; it is the reference point for all impressions, positive and negative acquired over time. Marketing is the tool that must perceive, study and present differentiation factors, must show and convince consumers about the qualities of a product or service. Reality demands a special attention to this topic and the Portugal Brand experienced a development and promotion program boom since the 20th Century 90’s. Currently, the figure in charge of the management of the Portugal Brand is the Government, through AICEP, whose mission is to increase the notoriety of Portugal, captivating structural investment and the internationalization of enterprises, mainly small and medium businesses, creating competitive conditions and stimulating exports to the Global Market, diversifying product offer and Destination Countries. Some errors have been pointed out in the management of the Portugal Brand, such as lack of strategy and unsuccessful plans, but it is imperative to irrevocably understand that Brand assumption and its Repositioning is a strategic vector for the development of the Country. Portugal has good references, either in industry, or services, has product, that help promoting Portugal’s global image and contributing to an increase in revenues, either in exports, Tourism or Direct Investment. Portugal needs a Marketing Plan and a Brand management entity, such as a Brand strategic executive council, to ensure an effective management of the Portugal Brand, integrated and articulated with all the products and services flagged as strategic assets for exportation or domestic use. This thesis presents a Repositioning Model of the Portugal Brand that aggregates all positive aspects that Portugal has, such as sale capacity, potential for investment, lots of places to visit, and develops a serious and transversal program to promote Portugal abroad and to attract investors and visitors alike.

ABSTRACT: There are many tourists who travel to a certain destination driven by one or more motivations. Anyway, due to the intense pace of life, religion has been, increasingly, a tourist element that attracts many people whose main motivation is faith. Religious tourism or tourism to a religious destination has not been considered. This means that this type of tourism has a strong connection with the existing heritage areas to develop tourism. On the other hand, religious tourism is practiced only when there is such a heritage. The Village of Arcozelo in Vila Nova de Gaia is a place that faces some limitations in terms of economics therefore tourism can play an important role in its development strategy. Although away from the major urban centre of Porto, the place manages to attract various types of tourists, especially sun and sea tourists, and religious tourist. These last ones have the curiosity to visit “Santa Maria Adelaide”, better known as the “Saint of the Brides”. Summarising, in scientific terms, this thesis sought to analyze the influences and the potential that religious tourism can bring to this village and this way consistently contribute to local development

This article examines how Barbados as a mature resort destination has set about rejuvenating its tourism product since the early 1990s, when the number of stop-over tourist arrivals showed year-on-year declines. This has been achieved in three principal ways: the extensive upgrading of existing hotel facilities, especially at the luxury end of the market: the increase of overall tourist capacity, and the development of niche markets, especially golf tourism. At both the outset and the conclusion, the rejuvenation of tourism in Barbados between 1993 and 2003 is viewed in light of Butler's (1980) model of resort-cycle development.

The elucidation of spatial variation in the landscape can indicate potential wildlife habitats or breeding sites for vectors, such as ticks or mosquitoes, which cause a range of diseases. Information from remotely sensed data could aid the delineation of vegetation distribution on the ground in areas where local knowledge is limited. The data from digital images are often difficult to interpret because of pixel-to-pixel variation, that is, noise, and complex variation at more than one spatial scale. Landsat Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) and Satellite Pour l'Observation de La Terre (SPOT) image data were analyzed for an area close to Douna in Mali, West Africa. The variograms of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) from both types of image data were nested. The parameters of the nested variogram function from the Landsat ETM+ data were used to design the sampling for a ground survey of soil and vegetation data. Variograms of the soil and vegetation data showed that their variation was anisotropic and their scales of variation were similar to those of NDVI from the SPOT data. The short- and long-range components of variation in the SPOT data were filtered out separately by factorial kriging. The map of the short-range component appears to represent the patterns of vegetation and associated shallow slopes and drainage channels of the tiger bush system. The map of the long-range component also appeared to relate to broader patterns in the tiger bush and to gentle undulations in the topography. The results suggest that the types of image data analyzed in this study could be used to identify areas with more moisture in semiarid regions that could support wildlife and also be potential vector breeding sites.

1. There is concern over the possibility of unwanted environmental change following transgene movement from genetically modified (GM) rapeseed Brassica napus to its wild and weedy relatives. 2. The aim of this research was to develop a remote sensing-assisted methodology to help quantify gene flow from crops to their wild relatives over wide areas. Emphasis was placed on locating sites of sympatry, where the frequency of gene flow is likely to be highest, and on measuring the size of rapeseed fields to allow spatially explicit modelling of wind-mediated pollen-dispersal patterns. 3. Remote sensing was used as a tool to locate rapeseed fields, and a variety of image-processing techniques was adopted to facilitate the compilation of a spatially explicit profile of sympatry between the crop and Brassica rapa. 4. Classified satellite images containing rapeseed fields were first used to infer the spatial relationship between donor rapeseed fields and recipient riverside B. rapa populations. Such images also have utility for improving the efficiency of ground surveys by identifying probable sites of sympatry. The same data were then also used for the calculation of mean field size. 5. This paper forms a companion paper to Wilkinson et al. (2003), in which these elements were combined to produce a spatially explicit profile of hybrid formation over the UK. The current paper demonstrates the value of remote sensing and image processing for large-scale studies of gene flow, and describes a generic method that could be applied to a variety of crops in many countries. 6. Synthesis and applications. The decision to approve or prevent the release of a GM cultivar is made at a national rather than regional level. It is highly desirable that data relating to the decision-making process are collected at the same scale, rather than relying on extrapolation from smaller experiments designed at the plot, field or even regional scale. It would be extremely difficult and labour intensive to attempt to carry out such large-scale investigations without the use of remote-sensing technology. This study used rapeseed in the UK as a model to demonstrate the value of remote sensing in assembling empirical information at a national level.

The study of the morphodynamics of tidal channel networks is important because of their role in tidal propagation and the evolution of salt-marshes and tidal flats. Channel dimensions range from tens of metres wide and metres deep near the low water mark to only 20-30cm wide and 20cm deep for the smallest channels on the marshes. The conventional method of measuring the networks is cumbersome, involving manual digitising of aerial photographs. This paper describes a semi-automatic knowledge-based network extraction method that is being implemented to work using airborne scanning laser altimetry (and later aerial photography). The channels exhibit a width variation of several orders of magnitude, making an approach based on multi-scale line detection difficult. The processing therefore uses multi-scale edge detection to detect channel edges, then associates adjacent anti-parallel edges together to form channels using a distance-with-destination transform. Breaks in the networks are repaired by extending channel ends in the direction of their ends to join with nearby channels, using domain knowledge that flow paths should proceed downhill and that any network fragment should be joined to a nearby fragment so as to connect eventually to the open sea.
