The objective of this study was to evaluate the methodological characteristics of cost-effectiveness evaluations carried out in Spain, since 1990, which include LYG as an outcome to measure the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio. METHODS: A systematic review of published studies was conducted describing their characteristics and methodological quality. We analyse the cost per LYG results in relation with a commonly accepted Spanish cost-effectiveness threshold and the possible relation with the cost per quality adjusted life year (QALY) gained when they both were calculated for the same economic evaluation. RESULTS: A total of 62 economic evaluations fulfilled the selection criteria, 24 of them including the cost per QALY gained result as well. The methodological quality of the studies was good (55%) or very good (26%). A total of 124 cost per LYG results were obtained with a mean ratio of 49,529 and a median of 11,490 (standard deviation of 183,080). Since 2003, a commonly accepted Spanish threshold has been referenced by 66% of studies. A significant correlation was found between the cost per LYG and cost per QALY gained results (0.89 Spearman-Rho, 0.91 Pearson). CONCLUSIONS: There is an increasing interest for economic health care evaluations in Spain, and the quality of the studies is also improving. Although a commonly accepted threshold exists, further information is needed for decision-making as well as to identify the relationship between the costs per LYG and per QALY gained.

Multicellular organisms rely on specialized tissues that allow for the controlled exchange of matter with their surrounding. In order to function properly, these tissues need to establish a tight connection between the individual cells to prevent uncontrolled passive diffusion across the extracellular space. In animals, these connections are called tight and adherens junctions and are a critical feature of epithelia. These connections, however, rely on direct protein-protein interaction of plasma membrane proteins of adjacent cells. Such a mechanism is not possible in plants due to the cell wall, which encases the individual cells. In order to absorb nutrients, while simultaneously preventing uncontrolled diffusion between cells, land plants have evolved the root endodermis, which is functionally equivalent to animal epithelia. Its cells are surrounded by a precisely localized and aligned, ring-like lignin deposition, called the Casparian strip, and therefore tightly connected between each other. Very little was known about the development of the endodermis and the Casparian strip until recently. In the meantime, however, we have identified a family of endodermis- specific proteins, the CASPs, which recruits extracellular proteins the specific Casparian strip membrane domain (CSD) to locally synthesize lignin in the cell wall. Yet, we hardly knew any specifics on how the CSD is initially defined and how the critically important CASPs are being recruited to it. We therefore conducted a forward genetic screen on the localization of CASPI-GFP in order to identify novel mutants, which lack a defined CSD. We identified 48 mutants, which fell into 15 different complementation groups. While some of the isolated genes had previously been identified through different approaches, nine novel genes, which had never been implicated in CSD development and maintenance, were identified. One of them, LORD OF THE RINGS 2 (.LOTR2) is described to greater detail in this work. LOTR2 encodes for EX070A1, a protein of the evolutionary conserved exocyst complex. This complex has frequently been implicated in various secretory processes across kingdoms. In Arabidopsis, it transiently defines the positioning of CASPI-GFP. We have performed a detailed analysis of the dynamics of EX070A1 and CASPI-GFP, including studies with other markers and propose a mechanism, by which the cytosolic EX070A1 transiently defines a plasma membrane domain to recruit transmembrane proteins, which then recruit extracellular enzymes for localized cell wall modification. Considering the ubiquitous expression of EX070A1, we think that this mechanism is potentially of importance not only for the endodermis and the Casparian strip but also for many other tissues, in which the cell wall becomes locally modified. In fact, many other tissues with secondary cell wall modifications contain proteins very similar to the CASPs. It will be interesting to see to which degree this mechanism is employed in other tissues. As for the endodermis, we have now identified the first gene, which is not specific to the endodermis but shows endodermis-specific dynamics. This might give us a better insight on how the plant modulates this ubiquitously present factor in a cell- or tissue-type specific manner. Considering the knowledge, mutants and tools, which are available to us for investigating the endodermis, the Casparian strip, the exocyst complex and EX070A1 might be just the right experimental system to address these questions. -- Les organismes multicellulaires dépendent des tissues spécialisé pour l'échange contrôlé entre eux et leur environnement. Pour leur bon fonctionnement, les cellules de ces tissus ont besoin d'être très étroitement assemblés afin de prévenir la diffusion non-contrôlée à travers l'espace extracellulaire. Chez les animaux, ces connexions sont appelées jonctions serrées et jonctions adhérentes. Ces jonctions dépendent des interactions directes entre les protéines des cellules voisines. Ceci n'est pas possible chez les plantes à cause de la paroi cellulaire qui recouvre chaque cellule individuellement. Pour absorber les nutriments et en même temps empêcher la diffusion non-contrôlé entre cellules, les plantes ont évolué 1'endoderme dans la racine, qui est fonctionnellement équivalent aux épithéliums des animaux. Les cellules de l'endoderme sont ceinturées par une déposition de lignine très précisément localisées comme un anneau et alignées entre les cellules, et qui, donc, connecte étroitement les cellules avoisinante: Le cadre de Caspary. Peu était connu sur le développement de l'endoderme et le cadre de Caspaiy jusqu'à il y a quelques années. Récemment, pourtant, nous avons identifié une famille de protéines spécifiques à l'endoderme, les CASPs, qui définissent le domaine membranaire du cadre de Caspaiy (CSD). Les CASPs recrutent les protéines extracellulaires nécessaire à la synthèse du cadre de Caspary vers une région limité dans la paroi cellulaire. Pourtant, on connaît très peu les processus spécifiques concernant la définition initiale du CSD et comment les CASPs, qui ont une importance cruciale, sont recrutées vers ce domaine. Par conséquent nous avons mené un crible génétique sur la localisation du CASPI- GFP, qui sert comme marqueur pour le CSD. Notre but étant d'isoler de nouveaux mutants affectés dans l'établissement du CSD. Nous avons identifié 48 mutants, en 15 groupes de complémentation. Bien que certains des gènes isolés étaient déjà impliqué dans la formation du cadre de Caspary, neuf nouveaux gènes n'ayant jamais été impliqués dans le développement ou la maintenance du CSD ont pu être identifiés. Un de ces gènes, LORD OF THE RINGS2 (LOTR2) sera décrit plus en détail dans cette étude. LOTR2 code pour EX070A1, qui est une protéine, du complexe exocyste. Ce complexe de protéines a très bien été conservé au cours de l'évolution. Il était souvent impliqué dans plusieurs processus de sécrétion dans toutes les branches de la vie. Chez Arabidopsis, EX070A1 définit la position du CSD d'une façon transitoire et recrute CASP1- GFP. Nous avons mené une analyse détaillée des dynamiques d'EX070Al et CASPI-GFP ainsi que, des études avec des autres mutants. Nous proposons un mécanisme, d'après lequel EX070A1, recruté du cytosol, définit un domaine dans la membrane plasmique pour localiser des protéines transmembranaires, ces dernières ensuite recruteront des enzymes extracellulaires pour la modification locale de la paroi cellulaire. Vu qu'EX070A1 est exprimé dans toute dans la plante, nous pensons que ce mécanisme est potentiellement important non seulement pour l'endoderme et le cadre de Caspary, mais aussi pour les autres tissus où la paroi cellulaire doit être localement modifiée. En effet, plusieurs autres tissus contiennent des protéines très similaires aux CASPs. Il serait intéressant de voir à quelle dégrée ce mécanisme est également utilisé dans ces tissues. En ce qui concerne l'endoderme, nous avons maintenant identifié le premier gène qui n'est pas exprimé spécifiquement dans l'endoderme, mais qui montre tout de même une dynamique caractéristique dans ce tissu. Il serait intéressant de voir comment la plante peut moduler ce facteur omniprésent d'une façon spécifique. Vu les connaissances, les mutants et les outils qu'on a maintenant à notre disposition, l'endoderme et son cadre de Caspary, le complexe exocyste et EX070A1 sont probablement des bons systèmes expérimentaux pour étudier ces questions. -- Identification des nouveaux facteurs pendant l'établissement du cadre de Caspary dans l'endoderme. Comme tous les autres organismes multicellulaires, les plantes terrestres dépendent de tissus spécialisés pour l'échange contrôlé avec leur environnement. Ces tissus sont importants pour l'absorption des nutriments mais également pour éviter l'influx de composés toxiques. Chez les plantes, ce tissu se trouve dans la racine. C'est l'endoderme. Grâce au cadre de Caspary, qui permet une forte connexion entre les cellules au niveau de leur paroi, l'endoderme empêche les éléments toxiques d'entrer dans le système vasculaire. Depuis quelques années, nous comprenons de plus en plus la nature et la biosynthèse, ainsi que les protéines impliquées dans l'ancrage des enzymes à la membrane plasmique. Nous n'avons eu, par contre, aucune idée sur le mécanisme qui d'abord définit cet endroit dans la membrane plasmique. Nous avons mené un crible génétique sur la localisation de CASPI-GFP, une protéine, qui recrute les enzymes extracellulaires pour la synthèse du cadre de Caspary. Nous avons identifié plusieurs nouveaux gènes qui sont impliqués dans l'intégrité du cadre de Caspary. L'un de ces gènes est EX070A1, qui est un facteur ayant un rôle important lors de la sécrétion des protéines dans tous les organismes eukaryotes. Ces mutants sont gravement affectés au niveau du cadre de Caspary, mais surtout ils ne sont plus capables de localiser CASPI-GFP. Nous avons suivi la dynamique d'EX070Al et de CASP1-GFP en combinaison avec d'autres marqueurs. Nous avons pu montrer que l'accumulation d'EX070Al est spécifique pour l'endoderme et essentielle pour bien localiser CASPI-GFP et donc, le cadre de Caspary. Ces résultats nous aident à mieux comprendre le développement de l'endoderme mais peuvent potentiellement aussi être utilisés pour étudier les modifications de la paroi cellulaire dans d'autres cellules de la plante.

Transposable elements (TEs) and other repetitive DNA can accumulate in the absence of recombination, a process contributing to the degeneration of Y-chromosomes and other nonrecombining genome portions. A similar accumulation of repetitive DNA is expected for asexually reproducing species, given their entire genome is effectively nonrecombining. We tested this expectation by comparing the whole-genome TE loads of five asexual arthropod lineages and their sexual relatives, including asexual and sexual lineages of crustaceans (Daphnia water fleas), insects (Leptopilina wasps), and mites (Oribatida). Surprisingly, there was no evidence for increased TE load in genomes of asexual as compared to sexual lineages, neither for all classes of repetitive elements combined nor for specific TE families. Our study therefore suggests that nonrecombining genomes do not accumulate TEs like nonrecombining genomic regions of sexual lineages. Even if a slight but undetected increase of TEs were caused by asexual reproduction, it appears to be negligible compared to variance between species caused by processes unrelated to reproductive mode. It remains to be determined if molecular mechanisms underlying genome regulation in asexuals hamper TE activity. Alternatively, the differences in TE dynamics between nonrecombining genomes in asexual lineages versus nonrecombining genome portions in sexual species might stem from selection for benign TEs in asexual lineages because of the lack of genetic conflict between TEs and their hosts and/or because asexual lineages may only arise from sexual ancestors with particularly low TE loads.

The increasing prevalence of obesity and its associated complications requires specialized care to improve outcomes and control health care costs. Obesity is associated with numerous serious and costly medical problems requiring specialized care in managing health. The economic burden of obesity includes increased inpatient and outpatient medical expenditures as well as employer-related issues of absenteeism and associate costs. The objectives of this study are: - To describe the health consequences and the economic burden of obesity, - To review the existing treatment - To argue in favor of a specialized nutritional intervention that has shown to improve health and reduce obesity related health care costs. Therefore, expose the possibility of introducing the specialized nutrition in Switzerland and the feasibility of this project considering the medical trends and reimbursement system in Switzerland The benefits and outcomes for the patients will be the significant weight loss which reduces the severity and risk factors for complications and the improved health and quality of life. Weight loss will be a combination of a diet, exercise and behavioral interventions which are the basic recommendations for obesity treatment in addition to the specialized nutritional support. By nutritional support, we mean products that are intended to provide nutritional support in the dietary management of people with specific diseases and conditions when adequate intake of regular foods is compromised. These products are called, Food for special medical purposes FSMP. They are not intended to treat, cure, prevent, mitigate or have a direct impact on disease in a manner similar to drugs or other medical treatments and should be used under medical supervision. They also provide a low cost alternative to surgery. From a health care system perspective, the specialized nutrition will drive its advantage by reducing the utilization of medical services for obesity associated complications like medication, physician's consultations and surgical interventions arriving to a cost effective care for the hospitals, the health care organizations and the third party payers which are the health insurances. The Kyoto protocol allows Annex I countries to deduct carbon sequestered by land use, land-use change and forestry from their national carbon emissions. Thornley and Cannell (2000) demonstrated that the objectives of maximizing timber and carbon sequestration are not complementary. Based on this finding, this paper determines the optimal selective management regime taking into account the underlying biophysical and economic processes. The results show that the net benefits of carbon storage only compensate the decrease in net benefits of timber production once the carbon price has exceeded a certain threshold value. The sequestration costs are significantly lower than previous estimates

This dissertation analyses the growing pool of copyrighted works, which are offered to the public using Creative Commons licensing. The study consist of analysis of the novel licensing system, the licensors, and the changes of the "all rights reserved" —paradigm of copyright law. Copyright law reserves all rights to the creator until seventy years have passed since her demise. Many claim that this endangers communal interests. Quite often the creators are willing to release some rights. This, however, is very difficult to do and needs help of specialized lawyers. The study finds that the innovative Creative Commons licensing scheme is well suited for low value - high volume licensing. It helps to reduce transaction costs on several le¬vels. However, CC licensing is not a "silver bullet". Privacy, moral rights, the problems of license interpretation and license compatibility with other open licenses and collecting societies remain unsolved. The study consists of seven chapters. The first chapter introduces the research topic and research questions. The second and third chapters inspect the Creative Commons licensing scheme's technical, economic and legal aspects. The fourth and fifth chapters examine the incentives of the licensors who use open licenses and describe certain open business models. The sixth chapter studies the role of collecting societies and whether two institutions, Creative Commons and collecting societies can coexist. The final chapter summarizes the findings. The dissertation contributes to the existing literature in several ways. There is a wide range of prior research on open source licensing. However, there is an urgent need for an extensive study of the Creative Commons licensing and its actual and potential impact on the creative ecosystem.

No se encontraron diferencias significativas en los beneficios e ingresos entre ambas muestras, ni siquiera en sus volatilidades. Tampoco se encontraron diferencias significativas en rentabilidad, manipulación contable, ni en el poder de ambos criterios de valoración para predecir los flujos de tesorería. Por el contrario, la mayor parte de los tests realizados revelan un mayor poder de los beneficios calculados bajo el VR para la predicción de los beneficios futuros, respecto de cuando son calculados bajo el CH. El estudio proporciona también evidencia empírica de prácticas contables defectuosas de CH en el sector agrícola, concluyendo que el VR puede representar un criterio de valoración interesante para un sector, como el agrícola, caracterizado por el predominio de pequeñas explotaciones familiares.

The Gulf of Finland is said to be one of the densest operated sea areas in the world. It is a shallow and economically vulnerable sea area with dense passenger and cargo traffic of which petroleum transports have a share of over 50 %. The winter conditions add to the risks of maritime traffic in the Gulf of Finland. It is widely believed that the growth of maritime transportation will continue also in the future. The Gulf of Finland is surrounded by three very different national economies with, different maritime transportation structures. Finland is a country of high GDP/per capita with a diversified economic structure. The number of ports is large and the maritime transportation consists of many types of cargoes: raw materials, industrial products, consumer goods, coal and petroleum products, and the Russian transit traffic of e.g. new cars and consumer goods. Russia is a large country with huge growth potential; in recent years, the expansion of petroleum exports has lead to a strong economic growth, which is also apparent in the growth of maritime transports. Russia has been expanding its port activities in the Gulf of Finland and it is officially aiming to transport its own imports and exports through the Russian ports in the future; now they are being transported to great extend through the Finnish, Estonian and other Baltic ports. Russia has five ports in the Gulf of Finland. Estonia has also experienced fast economic growth, but the growth has been slowing down already during the past couples of years. The size of its economy is small compared to Russia, which means the transported tonnes cannot be very massive. However, relatively large amounts of the Russian petroleum exports have been transported through the Estonian ports. The future of the Russian transit traffic in Estonia looks nevertheless uncertain and it remains to be seen how it will develop and if Estonia is able to find replacing cargoes if the Russian transit traffic will come to an end in the Estonian ports. Estonia’s own import and export consists of forestry products, metals or other raw materials and consumer goods. Estonia has many ports on the shores of the Gulf of Finland, but the port of Tallinn dominates the cargo volumes. In 2007, 263 M tonnes of cargoes were transported in the maritime traffic in the Gulf of Finland, of which the share of petroleum products was 56 %. 23 % of the cargoes were loaded or unloaded in the Finnish ports, 60 % in the Russian ports and 17 % in the Estonian ports. The largest ports were Primorsk (74.2 M tonnes) St. Petersburg (59.5 M tonnes), Tallinn (35.9 M tonnes), Sköldvik (19.8 M tonnes), Vysotsk (16.5 M tonnes) and Helsinki (13.4 M) tonnes. Approximately 53 600 ship calls were made in the ports of the Gulf of Finland. The densest traffic was found in the ports of St. Petersburg (14 651 ship calls), Helsinki (11 727 ship calls) and Tallinn (10 614 ship calls) in 2007. The transportation scenarios are usually based on the assumption that the amount of transports follows the development of the economy, although also other factors influence the development of transportation, e.g. government policy, environmental aspects, and social and behavioural trends. The relationship between the development of transportation and the economy is usually analyzed in terms of the development of GDP and trade. When the GDP grows to a certain level, especially the international transports increase because countries of high GDP produce, consume and thus transport more. An effective transportation system is also a precondition for the economic development. In this study, the following factors were taken into consideration when formulating the future scenarios: maritime transportation in the Gulf of Finland 2007, economic development, development of key industries, development of infrastructure and environmental aspects in relation to maritime transportation. The basic starting points for the three alternative scenarios were: • the slow growth scenario: economic recession • the average growth scenario: economy will recover quickly from current instability • the strong growth scenario: the most optimistic views on development will realize According to the slow growth scenario, the total tonnes for the maritime transportation in the Gulf of Finland would be 322.4 M tonnes in 2015, which would mean a growth of 23 % compared to 2007. In the average growth scenario, the total tonnes were estimated to be 431.6 M tonnes – a growth of 64 %, and in the strong growth scenario 507.2 M tonnes – a growth of 93%. These tonnes were further divided into petroleum products and other cargoes by country, into export, import and domestic traffic by country, and between the ports. For petroleum products, the share of crude oil and oil products was estimated and the number of tanker calls in 2015 was calculated for each scenario. However, the future development of maritime transportation in the GoF is dependent on so many societal and economic variables that it is not realistic to predict one exact point estimate value for the cargo tonnes for a certain scenario. Plenty of uncertainty is related both to the degree in which the scenario will come true as well as to the cause-effect relations between the different variables. For these reasons, probability distributions for each scenario were formulated by an expert group. As a result, a range for the total tonnes of each scenario was formulated and they are as follows: the slow growth scenario: 280.8 – 363 M tonnes (expectation value 322.4 M tonnes)

  • the average growth scenario: 404.1 – 465.1 M tonnes (expectation value 431.6 M tonnes)
  • the strong growth scenario: 445.4 – 575.4 M tonnes (expectation value 507.2 M tonnes) Three alternatives scenarios were evaluated to realize most likely with the following probability distribution:
  • the slow growth scenario: 35 %
  • the average growth scenario: 50 %
  • the strong growth scenario: 15 %. In other words, expert group evaluated the average growth scenario to be the most likely to realize, second likely was the slow growth scenario, and the strong growth scenario was evaluated to be the most unlikely to realize. In sum, it can be stated that the development of maritime transportation in the Gulf of Finland is dominated by the development of Russia, because Russia dominates the cargo volumes. Maritime transportation in Finland is expected to be more stable and, in any case, such a growth potential cannot be seen in Finland. The development of maritime transportation in Estonia is rather challenging to forecast at the moment but, on the other hand, the transported tonnes in the Estonian ports are relatively small. The shares of export and import of the maritime transportation are not expected to change radically in the reference period. Petroleum products will dominate the transports also in the future and the share of oil products will probably increase compared to the share of crude oil. In regard to the other cargoes, the transports of raw materials and bulk goods will probably be replaced to some extend by cargoes of high-value, which adds especially to the container transports. But in overall, substantial changes are not expected in the commodity groups transported by sea. The growth potential of the ports concentrates on the Russian ports, especially Primorsk and Ust-Luga, if investments will come true as planned. It is likely that the larger ports do better in the competition than the small ones due to the economies of scale and to the concentration of cargo flows. The average ship sizes will probably grow, but the growth potential is rather limited because of geographical conditions and of the maritime transportation structure in the Gulf of Finland. Climate change and other environmental aspects are becoming more central e.g. in transportation politics. These issues can affect the maritime transportation in the Gulf of Finland through, for instance, strict environmental requirements concerning the emissions from shipping, or the port investments. If environmental requirements raise costs, it can affect the demand of transportation. In the near future, the development of the maritime transportation in the Gulf of Finland is mainly dependent on the current economic instability. If it will lead to a longer lasting recession, the growth of the transported tonnes will slow down. But if the instability does not last long, it can be expected that the economic growth will continue and along with it also the growth of transported tonnes.

    This study focuses to the intersection of three sets of activities in a company: expert work, development work and supply chain management, SCM. Experts and expert work represent a set of individuals whose efficiency and impact this study is intended to improve, while development work defines the set of organizational activities to focus on. SCM as an expertise area acts as the platform on which this study is built. The study has two aims. Firstly, it aims to derive a model helping an SCM expert to increase the effectiveness of expert work in development tasks by understanding the encountered organizational situations and processes better, reflecting his/her past and future actions to organizational processes and selecting and adjusting the processes and contents of his/her work accordingly. Secondly, it aims to develop applicable approaches and methods to understand, evaluate and manage the organizational processes and situations in development work. The integrative model on approaches and methods to improve the effectiveness of development processes is split to two aggregate dimensions: technical performance of the developed solution and consumption of resources of the development process. Six potential approaches and methods aiming at helping in the management of organizational dimensions are presented in enclosed publications. The approaches focus on three subtasks of development work: decision making, implementation and change, and knowledge accumulation. The approaches and methods have been tested in case studies representing typical development processes in the area of supply chain management. As a result, four suggestions are presented. Firstly, SCM experts are advised to consider the SCM development work to be consisting of development processes. Secondly, inside these processes they should identify and evaluate the risk of difficult decision-making related to organizational factors. Thirdly, they are prompted for an active role in implementation and change, supporting the implementation through whole process.     During the last few years, the discussion on the marginal social costs of transportation has been active. Applying the externalities as a tool to control transport would fulfil the polluter pays principle and simultaneously create a fair control method between the transport modes. This report presents the results of two calculation algorithms developed to estimate the marginal social costs based on the externalities of air pollution. The first algorithm calculates the future scenarios of sea transport traffic externalities until 2015 in the Gulf of Finland. The second algorithm calculates the externalities of Russian passenger car transit traffic via Finland by taking into account both sea and road transport. The algorithm estimates the ship-originated emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur oxides (SOx), particulates (PM) and the externalities for each year from 2007 to 2015. The total NOx emissions in the Gulf of Finland from the six ship types were almost 75.7 kilotons (Table 5.2) in 2007. The ship types are: passenger (including cruisers and ROPAX vessels), tanker, general cargo, Ro-Ro, container and bulk vessels. Due to the increase of traffic, the estimation for NOx emissions for 2015 is 112 kilotons. The NOx emission estimation for the whole Baltic Sea shipping is 370 kilotons in 2006 (Stipa & al, 2007). The total marginal social costs due to ship-originated CO2, NOx, SOx and PM emissions in the GOF were calculated to almost 175 million Euros in 2007. The costs will increase to nearly 214 million Euros in 2015 due to the traffic growth. The major part of the externalities is due to CO2 emissions. If we neglect the CO2 emissions by extracting the CO2 externalities from the results, we get the total externalities of 57 million Euros in 2007. After eight years (2015), the externalities would be 28 % lower, 41 million Euros (Table 8.1). This is the result of the sulphur emissions reducing regulation of marine fuels. The majority of the new car transit goes through Finland to Russia due to the lack of port capacity in Russia. The amount of cars was 339 620 vehicles (Statistics of Finnish Customs 2008) in 2005. The externalities are calculated for the transportation of passenger vehicles as follows: by ship to a Finnish port and, after that, by trucks to the Russian border checkpoint. The externalities are between 2 – 3 million Euros (year 2000 cost level) for each route. The ports included in the calculations are Hamina, Hanko, Kotka and Turku. With the Euro-3 standard trucks, the port of Hanko would be the best choice to transport the vehicles. This is because of lower emissions by new trucks and the saved transport distance of a ship. If the trucks are more polluting Euro 1 level trucks, the port of Kotka would be the best choice. This indicates that the truck emissions have a considerable effect on the externalities and that the transportation of light cargo, such as passenger cars by ship, produces considerably high emission externalities. The emission externalities approach offers a new insight for valuing the multiple traffic modes. However, the calculation of the marginal social costs based on the air emission externalities should not be regarded as a ready-made calculation system. The system is clearly in the need of some improvement but it can already be considered as a potential tool for political decision making.

    Keeping track of software assets and managing software installations in IT environments can be a hard endeavor, especially when the size and diversity of the environment grows. How to install and uninstall software efficiently and cost effectively? Are there too few or too many software licenses purchased? If installed, is the software actually in use? Software Asset Management (SAM) is a process that involves managing and optimizing the purchase, deployment, maintenance, utilization, and disposal of software applications within an organization. This master’s thesis describes a special Software Lifecycle Management Framework to provide solutions to the multitude of challenges within SAM. The main objectives when designing the framework was to provide a set of tools to control the software assets during their entire lifecycle while trying to minimize the costs related to owning and managing them.

    Leishmaniasis comprises a group of diseases caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania and has two basic clinical forms, visceral Leishmaniasis and cutaneous Leishmaniasis. The clinical features of Leishmaniasis depend on the species of Leishmania, the interaction between host and parasite and the immune response. This work focuses on cutaneous leishmaniosis because although it is not a deadly disease it results in significant scars and facial disfigurements, thus being clinically important. Furthermore, the first-line treatment consists of intravenous or intramuscular administration of intralesional pentavalent antimonials, which are highly toxic, making hospitalization of patients compulsory during treatment, with the associated financial costs. Herein, we review studies on drugs and treatments with fewer side effects and easier routes of administration such as topical administration. Recent research shows that the topical route of administration holds promise for the future treatment of cutaneous leishmaniosis.

    We investigated the effect of benthic substratum type (sand and rocks) and nutrient supply (N and P) on biofilm structure and heterotrophic metabolism in a field experiment in a forested Mediterranean stream (Fuirosos). Rock and sand colonization and biofilm formation was intensively studied for 44 d at two stream reaches: control and experimental (continuous addition of phosphate, ammonia, and nitrate). Structural (C, N, and polysaccharide content and bacterial and chlorophyll density) and metabolic biofilm parameters (b-glucosidase, peptidase, and phosphatase enzyme activities) were analyzed throughout the colonization process. The epilithic biofilm (grown on rocks) had a higher peptidase activity at the impacted reach, together with a higher algal and bacterial biomass. The positive relationship between the peptidase activity per cell and the N content of the epilithic biofilm suggested that heterotrophic utilization of proteinaceous compounds from within the biofilm was occurring. In contrast, nutrient addition caused the epipsammic biofilm (grown on sand) to exhibit lower b-glucosidase and phosphatase activities, without a significant increase in bacterial and algal biomass. The differential response to nutrient addition was related to different structural characteristics within each biofilm. The epipsammic biofilm had a constant and high C:N ratio (22.7) throughout the colonization. The epilithic biofilm had a higher C:N ratio at the beginning of the colonization (43.2) and evolved toward a more complex structure (high polysaccharide content and low C:N ratio) during later stages.
