We demonstrate that the use of in-line nonlinear optical loop mirrors (NOLMs) in dispersion-managed (DM) transmission systems dominated by amplitude noise can achieve passive 2R regeneration of a 40 and 80 Gbit/s RZ data stream. This is an indication that the use of this approach could obviate the need for full-regeneration in high data rate, strong DM systems, when intra-channel four-wave mixing poses serious problems.

In this letter, we numerically demonstrate that the use of inline nonlinear optical loop mirrors in strongly dispersion-managed transmission systems dominated by pulse distortion and amplitude noise can achieve all-optical passive 2R regeneration of a 40-Gb/s return-to-zero data stream. We define the tolerance limits of this result to the parameters of the input pulses.

We propose an all-optical passive 2R regeneration method for WDM (N×40 Gbit/s) dispersion-managed RZ transmission based on specially designed WDM guiding filters and in-line nonlinear optical loop mirrors. By system optimisation, the feasibility of 150 GHz-spaced × l6 channel transmission over 25,000 km of standard fibre is numerically demonstrated.

A method of all-optical passive quasi-regeneration in transoceanic 40 Gbit/s return-to-zero transmission systems with strong dispersion management was described. The use of in-line nonlinear optical loop mirrors (NOLM) by the method was demonstrated. The quasi-regeneration of signals performed by NOLMs was found to improve the systems's performance.

All-optical passive regeneration in 40 Gbit/s-based wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) dispersion-managed return-to-zero (RZ) transmission system was discussed. In-line nonlinear optical loop mirrors (NOLM) were used. A feasibility of 300 GHz-spaced two channel unlimited transmission and 150 GHz-spaced two channel 25000 km transmission over the standard fiber were found.

The nonlinear operation regimes of quantum-dot semiconductor optical amplifiers (QD-SOAs) are investigated and the ideal filter providing the best all-optical wavelength conversion efficiency is derived theoretically. Results are confirmed by experiments with Q2-factors amounting to 16 dB.

We demonstrate an all-fiber-integrated Er-doped fiber laser operating in the soliton-similariton mode-locking regime. In the similariton part of the cavity, a self-similarly evolving parabolic pulse with highly linear chirp propagates in the presence of normal dispersion. Following an in-line fiber-based birefringent filter, the pulse evolves into a soliton in the part of the cavity with anomalous dispersion. The similariton and the soliton pulses are dechirped to 75.5 and 167.2 fs, respectively, outside of the cavity. Mode-locked operation is very robust, owing to the influence of the two similariton and soliton attractors that predominate each half of the laser cavity. The experimental results are supported with numerical simulations, which provide good agreement.

In this paper a microwave photonic filter using superstructured fiber Bragg grating and dispersive fiber is investigated. A theoretical model to describe the transfer function of the filter taking into consideration the spectral width of light source is established. Experiments are carried out to verify the theoretical analysis. Both theoretical and experimental results indicate that due to chromatic dispersion the source spectral width introduces an additional power penalty to the microwave photonic response of the filter.

A Bragg grating fast tunable filter prototype working over a linear tuning range of 45 nm with a maximum tuning speed of 21 nm/ms has been realized. The tunable filter system is based on two piezoelectric stack actuators moving a mechanical device thus compressing an apodized fiber Bragg grating. The filter allows both traction and compression and can work in transmission and in reflection. It is designed to work with a channel spacing of 100 GHz according to the ITU specifications for wavelength division multiplexing systems.

The feasibility of stable soliton transmission system was demonstrated using a practical dispersion map in conjunction with in-line nonlinear optical loop mirrors (NOLMs). The system's performance was examined at 40 Gbit/s data rate in terms of maximum propagation distance corresponding to a bit error rate of more than 10-9. The bit error rate was estimated by means of the standard Q-factor.
