This article presents the principal results of the doctoral thesis “Semantic-oriented Architecture and Models for Personalized and Adaptive Access to the Knowledge in Multimedia Digital Library” by Desislava Ivanova Paneva-Marinova (Institute of Mathematics and Informatics), successfully defended before the Specialised Academic Council for Informatics and Mathematical Modelling on 27 October, 2008.

Primitive Ideals and Symplectic Leaves of Quantum Matrices

It is proved that there exists a bijection between the primitive ideals of the algebra of regular functions on quantum m × n-matrices and the symplectic leaves of associated Poisson structure.

Some properties of g- and P-spaces

A γ-space with a strictly positive measure is separable. An example of a non-separable γ−space with c.c.c. is given. A P−space with c.c.c. is countable and discrete.

Some Para-Hermitian Related Complex Structures and Non-existence of Semi-Riemannian Metric on Some Spheres

It is shown that the spheres S^(2n) (resp: S^k with k ≡ 1 mod 4) can be given neither an indefinite metric of any signature (resp: of signature (r, k − r) with 2 ≤ r ≤ k − 2) nor an almost paracomplex structure. Further for every given Riemannian metric on an almost para-Hermitian manifold with the associated 2-form φ one can construct an almost Hermitian structure (under certain conditions, two different almost Hermitian structures) whose associated 2-form(s) is φ.

Paracompact Spaces and Radon Spaces

We prove that if E is a subset of a Banach space whose density is of measure zero and such that (E, weak) is a paracompact space, then (E, weak) is a Radon space of type (F ) under very general conditions.

Representations and Positive Definite Functions on Hypergroups

Some relationships between representations of a hypergroup X, its algebras, and positive definite functions on X are studied. Also, various types of convergence of positive definite functions on X are discussed.

Topological Dichotomy and Unconditional Convergence

In this paper, we give a criterion for unconditional convergence with respect to some summability methods, dealing with the topological size of the set of choices of sign providing convergence. We obtain similar results for boundedness. In particular, quasi-sure unconditional convergence implies unconditional convergence.

Alternative Characterization of the Class k-UCV and Related Classes of Univalent Functions

In this paper an alternative characterization of the class of functions called k -uniformly convex is found. Various relations concerning connections with other classes of univalent functions are given. Moreover a new class of univalent functions, analogous to the ’Mocanu class’ of functions, is introduced. Some results concerning this class are derived.

Descriptive Sets and the Topology of Nonseparable Banach Spaces

This paper was extensively circulated in manuscript form beginning in the Summer of 1989. It is being published here for the first time in its original form except for minor corrections, updated references and some concluding comments.

Using cognitive load theory to interpret student difficulties with a problem-based learning approach to engineering education:a case study

This article reports on an investigationwith first year undergraduate ProductDesign and Management students within a School of Engineering and Applied Science. The students at the time of this investigation had studied fundamental engineering science and mathematics for one semester. The students were given an open ended, ill-formed problem which involved designing a simple bridge to cross a river.They were given a talk on problemsolving and given a rubric to follow, if they chose to do so.They were not given any formulae or procedures needed in order to resolve the problem. In theory, they possessed the knowledge to ask the right questions in order tomake assumptions but, in practice, it turned out they were unable to link their a priori knowledge to resolve this problem. They were able to solve simple beam problems when given closed questions. The results show they were unable to visualize a simple bridge as an augmented beam problem and ask pertinent questions and hence formulate appropriate assumptions in order to offer resolutions.

Continuity of Pseudo-differential Operators on Bessel And Besov Spaces

We study the continuity of pseudo-differential operators on Bessel potential spaces Hs|p (Rn ), and on the corresponding Besov spaces B^(s,q)p (R ^n). The modulus of continuity ω we use is assumed to satisfy j≥0, ∑ [ω(2−j )Ω(2j )]2 < ∞ where Ω is a suitable positive function.

Polynomials of Pellian Type and Continued Fractions

We investigate infinite families of integral quadratic polynomials {fk (X)} k∈N and show that, for a fixed k ∈ N and arbitrary X ∈ N, the period length of the simple continued fraction expansion of √fk (X) is constant. Furthermore, we show that the period lengths of √fk (X) go to infinity with k. For each member of the families involved, we show how to determine, in an easy fashion, the fundamental unit of the underlying quadratic field. We also demonstrate how the simple continued fraction ex- pansion of √fk (X) is related to that of √C, where √fk (X) = ak*X^2 +bk*X + C. This continues work in [1]–[4].
