The purpose of this report is to record key events and achievements of the NRA Central Area Fisheries Function in 1995. Rivers include the Ribble, Hodder and Lune. The report looks at Hydrological and meteorological data, site visits made during the year, communications and reports, Capital works and purchases, Stock assessment, monitoring and specific investigations, Fisheries Management advice, Fish kills and rescues, Fish rearing and stocking. It also looks at rod and net catches for salmon and sea trout, micro-tag returns, the drought, the results of the 1995 objectives set the year before and the key objectives for 1996.

The purpose of this report is to record key events and achievements of the NRA Central Area Fisheries Function in 1996. Rivers are Ribble, Hodder and Lune. The report looks at Hydrological and meteorological data, site visits made during the year, promotional events that it was involved with; communications and reports, Capital works and purchases, Stock assessment, monitoring and specific investigations, Fisheries Management advice, Fish kills and rescues, Fish rearing and stocking. It also includes catch data for net and rod catches for Salmon and Sea trout; the results of the objectives made last year and key objectives for next year.

Use of telemetric tracking to examine environmental influences on catch/effort indices. A case study of Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar L.)in the R. Tywi, S. Wales

A case study of Atlantic Salmon runs into the R. Tyvi (S. Wales) is presented. Radio tracking of over 200 salmon in 1988 and 1989 has demonstrated that flow is an important factor in modifying both run timing and migratory success. Entry of salmon into the river is typically in response to flow events, and periods of low falling flows delay entry and may directly result in reduced runs into the river. Delayed entry may also increase the proportion of the run migrating after the end of both rod and net fishing seasons. The implications of these results for net and rod catch and catch/effort data are discussed, using both statutory reported catch data and data from specific catch/effort studies. Flow is demonstrated to be a dominant factor in determining the within-season distribution of rod catch and catch/effort during low-flow years. Estuarial seine net catch and catch/effort tend to be controlled more by time of return than by flow although low flows may delay runs. Annual reported rod catch is correlated with flow, which controls in season availability, catchability and consequently the amount of fishing effort. Use of catch or catch/effort data should take account of inter-year variations in flow and other environmental factors. Although catch and catch/effort are valuable indicators of fishery performance, they are inadequate to represent changing stock levels.

Efeitos da hipóxia-isquemia perinatal sobre o comportamento motor, distribuição da Tirosina Hidroxilase na substância negra e da NADPH diaforase no hipocampo durante o desenvolvimento em ratos

A hipóxia isquemia (HI) pré-natal é uma das principais causas de mortalidade e doenças neurológicas crônicas em neonatos, que podem apresentar déficits remanentes como: retardamento, paralisia cerebral, dificuldade de aprendizado ou epilepsia. Estes prejuízos, provavelmente, estão relacionados com o atraso no desenvolvimento neural, astrogliose e com a perda de neurônios e oligodendrócitos. Déficits funcionais e cognitivos estão associados à degeneração de vias dopaminérgicas e de estruturas hipocampais. A enzima tirosina hidroxilase (TH) é a enzima limitante na síntese de dopamina e seus níveis são alterados em eventos de HI. O óxido nítrico (NO) é um gás difusível que atua modulando diferentes sistemas, participando de eventos como plasticidade sináptica e neuromodulação no sistema nervoso central e é produzido em grandes quantidades em eventos de injúria e inflamação, como é o caso da HI. O presente estudo teve por objetivos avaliar, utilizando o modelo criado por Robinson e colaboradores em 2005, os efeitos da HI sobre o comportamento motor e avaliar o desenvolvimento de estruturas encefálicas relacionadas a este comportamento como a substância negra (SN) e o complexo hipocampal. A HI foi induzida a partir do clampeamento das artérias uterinas da rata grávida, por 45 minutos no décimo oitavo dia de gestação (grupo HI). Em um grupo de fêmeas a cirurgia foi realizada, mas não houve clampeamento das artérias (grupo SHAM). A avaliação do comportamento motor foi realizada com os testes ROTAROD e de campo aberto em animais de 45 dias. Os encéfalos foram processados histologicamente nas idades de P9, P16, P23 e P90, sendo então realizada imunohistoquímica para TH e histoquímica para NADPH diaforase (NADPH-d), para avaliação do NO. Nossos resultados demonstraram redução da imunorreatividade para a TH em corpos celulares na SN aos 16 dias no grupo HI e aumento na imunorreatividade das fibras na parte reticulada aos 23 dias, com a presença de corpos celulares imunorreativos nesta região no grupo HI. Demonstramos também aumento do número de células marcadas para NADPH-d no giro dentado nos animais HI, nas idades analisadas, assim como aumento na intensidade de reação no corno de Ammon (CA1 e CA3) aos 9 dias no grupo HI, e posterior redução nesta marcação aos 23 e 90dias neste mesmo grupo. Nos testes comportamentais, observamos diminuição da atividade motora no grupo HI com uma melhora do desempenho ao longo dos testes no ROTAROD, sem entretanto atingir o mesmo nível do grupo SHAM. Os animais HI não apresentaram maior nível de ansiedade em relação ao grupo SHAM, descartando a hipótese das alterações observadas nos testes de motricidade estarem relacionadas a fatores ansiogênicos. O modelo de clampeamento das artérias uterinas da fêmea se mostrou uma ferramenta importante no estudo das alterações decorrentes do evento de HI pré-natal, por produzir diversos resultados que são similares aos ocorridos em neonatos que passam por este evento.

Age and growth of spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) in the Gulf of Alaska: analysis of alternative growth models

Ten growth models were fitted to age and growth data for spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) in the Gulf of Alaska. Previous studies of spiny dogfish growth have all fitted the t0 formulation of the von Bertalanffy model without examination of alternative models. Among the alternatives, we present a new two-phase von Bertalanffy growth model formulation with a logistically scaled k parameter and which estimates L0. A total of 1602 dogfish were aged from opportunistic collections with longline, rod and reel, set net, and trawling gear in the eastern and central Gulf of Alaska between 2004 and 2007. Ages were estimated from the median band count of three independent readings of the second dorsal spine plus the estimated number of worn bands for worn spines. Owing to a lack of small dogfish in the samples, lengths at age of small individuals were back-calculated from a subsample of 153 dogfish with unworn spines. The von Bertalanffy, two-parameter von Bertalanffy, two-phase von Bertalanffy, Gompertz, two-parameter Gompertz, and logistic models were fitted to length-at-age data for each sex separately, both with and without back-calculated lengths at age. The two-phase von Bertalanffy growth model produced the statistically best fit for both sexes of Gulf of Alaska spiny dogfish, resulting in L∞ = 87.2 and 102.5 cm and k= 0.106 and 0.058 for males and females, respectively.

Atores e agendas da política externa brasileira para a África e a instrumentalização da cooperação em segurança alimentar (2003-2010)

Durante os dois mandatos presidenciais de Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (2003-2010), percebeu-se, em virtude de pressões intra e extraburocráticas e de causalidades sistêmicas, maior acentuação do esboroamento da histórica condição insular do Ministério das Relações Exteriores (MRE). A participação de novos entes que não o Itamaraty na configuração da política externa, notadamente em seu vetor de execução, enseja novas agendas cooperativas e processos decisórios. Atores da burocracia federal, como os ministérios, vocalizam preferências que influenciam o jogo interburocrático e têm o condão de estabelecer possíveis pontes com a instituição diplomática, unidade de decisão por excelência. Na perspectiva intraburocrática, a ascensão de corrente de ação e de pensamento dos autonomistas, frente aos institucionalistas pragmáticos, permite escolhas de inserção internacional como o reforço da perspectiva sul-sul, na qual se inserem as parcerias com a África, o que indica a inexistência de monolitismo de opiniões no interior do MRE. Essa dinâmica faz-se presente e é necessária para o entendimento da Cooperação Brasileira para o Desenvolvimento Internacional (CBDI), tipo de Cooperação Sul-Sul (CSS) do Brasil que tem na Cooperação Técnica, Científica e Tecnológica (CTC&T) em segurança alimentar uma de suas modalidades mais atuantes e complexas. Convencionada como instrumento de política externa durante a ascendência dos autonomistas, corrente influenciada por quadros do Partido dos Trabalhadores, a cooperação em segurança alimentar teve o continente africano como locus primordial de manifestação. Embasado na internacionalização de políticas públicas domésticas, o compartilhamento de conhecimentos nas agendas de combate à fome, de combate à pobreza e de desenvolvimento agrário é fenômeno tributário da abertura da caixa preta estatal, o que ratifica o argumento de que há correlação entre níveis de análise. As diversas iniciativas cooperativas para com parceiros da outra margem do Atlântico Sul, eivadas de componente retórico de promoção de ordem internacional menos assimétrica, donde também subjace a busca consecução de interesses diretos e indiretos dos formuladores diplomáticos, guardam relação com as diretrizes mais gerais da política externa articulada no período estudado nesta dissertação.

Mortality of Lingcod, Ophiodon elongatus, Related to Capture by Hook and Line

Lingcod, Ophiodon elongatus, were captured by hook and line (sport rod and reel gear and commercial troll gear) at two coastal California locations and held in aquaria for periods of up to 32 days for evaluation of capture-related mortality. Three of 69 lingcod captured with rod and reel gear died of capture-related injuries (4.3% mortality; 95% confidence interval 0–9.3%). None of 15 lingcod captured with troll gear died of capture-related injuries. Due to the low overall mortality rate, there were no discernable trends in mortality with respect to sex, length, depth of capture, and terminal tackle (bait vs. lure). Of 38 fish with visible hooking wounds, 26 showed evidence of wound healing during the holding period.

Estudo Experimental de Gases em Camadas de Cobertura no Aterro de Nova Iguaçu - RJ.

Esta pesquisa apresenta uma revisão bibliográfica sobre as emissões de metano em aterros sanitários, os conceitos de geração de gases em aterros sanitários, movimentações de gases em aterro, apresenta os métodos de medição de gases in situ, tipos de cobertura finais para aterros e a oxidação do metano na camada de cobertura. A pesquisa também tem como objetivo medir as emissões de gases e avaliar a infiltração das águas pluviais através da camada de cobertura do aterro sanitário da CTR Nova Iguaçu. As medições foram realizadas nos meses de julho a novembro de 2010, na camada de cobertura monolítica existente e em outra construída sobre uma barreira capilar. Sensores para medir temperatura e umidade foram instalados em profundidade nas duas camadas. Foram realizados ensaios de placa de fluxo para medir a composição dos gases e o fluxo através dos dois tipos de camadas, e avaliadas duas situações: com os poços de extração de gás ativos e desligados. Os sensores indicaram que em período de baixa pluviosidade, a barreira capilar apresenta uma eficácia superior à camada monolítica, e com a intensificação das chuvas, as umidades medidas nos dois tipos de camadas aumentam, e na barreira capilar o gradiente estabelecido entre os sensores diminui, indicando uma possível tendência à saturação desta barreira capilar. Porém, com a paralisação das chuvas, recupera e retoma sua condição inicial. Os resultados de medidas dos gases demostraram a eficiência do sistema de extração de gás quando ativado, resultando em emissões quase nulas de metano e gás carbônico nos dois tipos de camadas. No entanto, quando o sistema está desativado, as emissões através da camada monolítica são cerca de 3 vezes maiores do que através da barreira capilar.

Estudo Experimental da Camada de Cobertura do Aterro Morro do Céu, Niterói - RJ.

Este trabalho apresenta uma revisão bibliográfica sobre os conceitos de solos não saturados e descreve os diversos tipos de camada de cobertura usadas em aterro de resíduos sólidos urbanos. Apresenta trabalhos científicos que contemplam curvas características de solos tropicais brasileiros. Caracteriza o solo usado antigamente como camada de cobertura do Aterro Morro do Céu e este solo com adição de 5% de bentonita. Determina a curva característica desses dois solos pelo Método do Papel Filtro e pela Placa de Sucção e, em seguida, Placa de Pressão. As curvas obtidas por esses métodos apresentaram diferenças. A adição da bentonita no solo teve como objetivo avaliar o desempenho do mesmo. O solo com adição de bentonita apresentou maior plasticidade, menor permeabilidade e maior capacidade de retenção de água no solo. Apresenta a modelagem de camadas monolíticas, camadas monolíticas evapotranspirativas, barreiras capilares, barreiras capilares evapotranspirativas através do uso do Programa VADOSE/W como ferramenta para aferição.

This is the report from the Eden and District Fisheries Advisory Committee meeting, which was held on the 29th June, 1976.
