The author's studied the photocatalytic properties of rational designed TiO2-ZnO hybrid nanostructures, which were fabricated by the site-specific deposition of amorphous TiO2 on the tips of ZnO nanorods. Compared with the pure components of ZnO nanorods and amorphous TiO2 nanoparticles, these TiO2-ZnO hybrid nanostructures demonstrated a higher catalytic activity. The strong green emission quenching observed from photoluminescence of TiO2-ZnO hybrid nanostructures implied an enhanced charge transfer/separation process resulting from the novel type II heterostructures with fine interfaces. The catalytic performance of annealing products with different TiO2phase varied with the annealing temperatures. This is attributed to the combinational changes in Egof the TiO2phase, the specific surface area and the quantity of surface hydroxyl groups.

To fully harness the enormous potential offered by interfaces between graphitic nanostructures and biomolecules, detailed connections between adsorbed conformations and adsorption behaviour are needed. To elucidate these links, a key approach, in partnership with experimental techniques, is molecular simulation. For this, a force-field (FF) that can appropriately capture the relevant physics and chemistry of these complex bio-interfaces, while allowing extensive conformational sampling, and also supporting inter-operability with known biological FFs, is a pivotal requirement. Here, we present and apply such a force-field, GRAPPA, designed to work with the CHARMM FF. GRAPPA is an efficiently implemented polarisable force-field, informed by extensive plane-wave DFT calculations using the revPBE-vdW-DF functional. GRAPPA adequately recovers the spatial and orientational structuring of the aqueous interface of graphene and carbon nanotubes, compared with more sophisticated approaches. We apply GRAPPA to determine the free energy of adsorption for a range of amino acids, identifying Trp, Tyr and Arg to have the strongest binding affinity and Asp to be a weak binder. The GRAPPA FF can be readily incorporated into mainstream simulation packages, and will enable large-scale polarisable biointerfacial simulations at graphitic interfaces, that will aid the development of biomolecule-mediated, solution-based graphene processing and self-assembly strategies.

Microcompression tests were performed to determine the mechanical behavior of nano-crystalline Cu/Fe and Fe/Cu multilayers, as well as monolithic Cu and Fe thin films. The results show that the micropillars of pure Cu thin film bulge out under large compressive strains without failure, while those of pure Fe thin film crack near the top at low compressive strains followed by shear failure. For Cu/Fe and Fe/Cu multilayers, the Cu layers accommodate the majority of plastic deformation, and the geometry constraints imposed by Fe layers exaggerates the bulging in the Cu layers. However, the existence of ductile Cu layers does not improve the overall ductility of Cu/Fe and Fe/Cu multilayers. Cracking in the Fe layers directly lead to the failure of the multilayer micropillars, although the Cu layers have very good ductility. The results imply that suppressing the cracking of brittle layers is more important than simply adding ductile layers for improving the overall ductility of metallic multilayers.

Gold based structures such as nanoparticles (NPs) and nanowires (NWs) have widely been used as building blocks for sensing devices in chemistry and biochemistry fields because of their unusual optical, electrical and mechanical properties. This article gives a detailed review of the new properties and fabrication methods for gold nanostructures, especially gold nanowires (GNWs), and recent developments for their use in optical and electrochemical sensing tools, such as surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). © 2014 by the authors; licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

Al and Mg alloys are widely used in industry as main lightweight alloys. They have excellent properties, such as low density, high ductility, and high specific strength, and so on. Generally speaking, Mg alloys are better than Al alloys. However the corrosion of Mg alloys is much more difficult to control compared Al alloys. Therefore to combine these two lightweight alloys, a composite-like structure is an ideal solution since Al alloys can be used as protective coatings for Mg alloys. Compound casting is a realistic technique to get this coating system. In the current study, we numerically study the compound casting using finite element method (FEM) to make these two alloys, a composite-like structure, satisfy requirements to resist corrosion required from industry, in which the aluminum layer is acting as a protective coating for the magnesium substrate. Several finite element models have been developed by using the birth and death element technique and we focus on compound casting-induced residual stresses in the compounded structure. The numerical results obtained from the proposed finite element models show the distribution profiles of thermal residual stresses. We found the major factors influencing the residual stresses are the temperature to pre-heating the Al substrate and the thickness of Mg deposits. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

The fabrication of artificial scaffolds that effectively mimic the host environment of the cell have exciting potential for the treatment of many diseases in regenerative medicine. In particular, appropriately designed scaffolds have the capacity to support, replace, and mediate the transplantation of therapeutic cells in order to regenerate damaged or diseased tissues. To achieve these goals for regeneration, the engineering of an environment structurally similar to the native extracellular matrix (ECM) is necessary in order to closely match the chemical and physical conditions found within the extracellular niche. Recently, self-assembled peptide (SAP) hydrogels have shown great potential for such biological applications due to their inherent biocompatibility, propensity to form higher order structures, rich chemical functionality and ease of synthesis. Importantly, it is possible to control the organization and properties of the target materials as the chemical structure is determined by amino acid sequence. Here, the development of SAP hydrogels as functional cell scaffolds and useful tools in tissue engineering is reviewed.

Uniform silver submicrospheres were synthesized under ambient conditions, through reduction of silver nitrate using ascorbic acid as a reducing agent and Tween 20 as a stabilizer. The silver submicroparticles exhibited strong catalytic activity for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol by sodium borohydride (NaBH4). Significantly, the aggregates of a few silver submicroparticles can be used as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate to improve markedly the Raman signal of crystal violet. The morphologies of silver submicroparticles can be controlled by changing reaction conditions. The formation process of silver submicroparticles was monitored by time-resolved extinction spectroscopy. The influences of concentrations and molar ratios of reaction reagents on the formation of silver submicroparticles are discussed.

We report subnanometer modification enabled by an ultrafine helium ion beam. By adjusting ion dose and the beam profile, structural defects were controllably introduced in a few-layer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) sample and its stoichiometry was modified by preferential sputtering of sulfur at a few-nanometer scale. Localized tuning of the resistivity of MoS2 was demonstrated and semiconducting, metallic-like, or insulating material was obtained by irradiation with different doses of He(+). Amorphous MoSx with metallic behavior has been demonstrated for the first time. Fabrication of MoS2 nanostructures with 7 nm dimensions and pristine crystal structure was also achieved. The damage at the edges of these nanostructures was typically confined to within 1 nm. Nanoribbons with widths as small as 1 nm were reproducibly fabricated. This nanoscale modification technique is a generalized approach that can be applied to various two-dimensional (2D) materials to produce a new range of 2D metamaterials.

This study determines for the first time Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Sr, Li and Rb contents in wines from the archipelagos of Madeira and Azores (Portugal). The greater part of the mean content for the different parameters fell within the ranges described in the literature, except for sodium whose higher content may be due to the effect of marine spray. ANOVA was used to establish the metals with significant differences in mean content between the wines from both archipelagos, between table and liquor wines of Madeira, and between wines of Pico and Terceira Islands from the Azores archipelago. Principal component analysis shows differences in the wines according to the wine-making process and/or the equipment employed. Stepwise linear discriminant analysis achieves a good classification and validation of wines according to the archipelago of origin, and the island in the case of Azores wines.

This clinical report describes a method to reduce the number of clinical sessions for the rehabilitation of implant-supported fixed dentures through a simplified and versatile procedure indicated mainly for immediate loading. According to this method, the immediate implant-supported fixed dentures for edentulous patients can be safely fabricated within 2 days. In this technique, the teeth in the wax are prepared on a base of light-polymerized resin, and both wax teeth and metallic superstructure trials are accomplished at the same session.
