A numerous population of weak line galaxies (WLGs) is often left out of statistical studies on emission-line galaxies (ELGs) due to the absence of an adequate classification scheme, since classical diagnostic diagrams, such as [O iii]/H beta versus [N ii]/H alpha (the BPT diagram), require the measurement of at least four emission lines. This paper aims to remedy this situation by transposing the usual divisory lines between star-forming (SF) galaxies and active galactic nuclei (AGN) hosts and between Seyferts and LINERs to diagrams that are more economical in terms of line quality requirements. By doing this, we rescue from the classification limbo a substantial number of sources and modify the global census of ELGs. More specifically, (1) we use the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 to constitute a suitable sample of 280 000 ELGs, one-third of which are WLGs. (2) Galaxies with strong emission lines are classified using the widely applied criteria of Kewley et al., Kauffmann et al. and Stasinska et al. to distinguish SF galaxies and AGN hosts and Kewley et al. to distinguish Seyferts from LINERs. (3) We transpose these classification schemes to alternative diagrams keeping [N ii]/H alpha as a horizontal axis, but replacing H beta by a stronger line (H alpha or [O ii]), or substituting the ionization-level sensitive [O iii]/H beta ratio with the equivalent width of H alpha (W(H alpha)). Optimized equations for the transposed divisory lines are provided. (4) We show that nothing significant is lost in the translation, but that the new diagrams allow one to classify up to 50 per cent more ELGs. (5) Introducing WLGs in the census of galaxies in the local Universe increases the proportion of metal-rich SF galaxies and especially LINERs. In the course of this analysis, we were led to make the following points. (i) The Kewley et al. BPT line for galaxy classification is generally ill-used. (ii) Replacing [O iii]/H beta by W(H alpha) in the classification introduces a change in the philosophy of the distinction between LINERs and Seyferts, but not in its results. Because the W(H alpha) versus [N ii]/H alpha diagram can be applied to the largest sample of ELGs without loss of discriminating power between Seyferts and LINERs, we recommend its use in further studies. (iii) The dichotomy between Seyferts and LINERs is washed out by WLGs in the BPT plane, but it subsists in other diagnostic diagrams. This suggests that the right wing in the BPT diagram is indeed populated by at least two classes, tentatively identified with bona fide AGN and `retired` galaxies that have stopped forming stars and are ionized by their old stellar populations.

COQ10 deletion in Saccharomyces cerevisiae elicits a defect in mitochondrial respiration correctable by addition of coenzyme Q(2). Rescue of respiration by Q(2) is a characteristic of mutants blocked in coenzyme Q(6) synthesis. Unlike Q(6) deficient mutants, mitochondria of the coq10 null mutant have wild-type concentrations Of Q(6). The physiological significance of earlier observations that purified Coq10p contains bound Q(6) was examined in the present study by testing the in vivo effect of over-expression of Coq10p on respiration. Mitochondria with elevated levels of Coq10p display reduced respiration in the bc1 span of the electron transport chain, which can be restored with exogenous Q(2). This suggests that in vivo binding of Q(6) by excess Coq10p reduces the pool of this redox carrier available for its normal function in providing electrons to the bc1 complex. This is confirmed by observing that extra Coq8p relieves the inhibitory effect of excess Coq10p. Coq8p is a putative kinase, and a high-copy suppressor of the coq10 null mutant. As shown here, when over-produced in coq mutants, Coq8p counteracts turnover of Coq3p and Coq4p subunits of the Q-biosynthetic complex. This can account for the observed rescue by COQ8 of the respiratory defect in strains over-producing Coq10p. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Trehalase (EC 3.2.1.28) hydrolyzes only alpha, alpha`- trehalose and is present in a variety of organisms, but is most important in insects and fungi. Crystallographic data showed that bacterial trehalase has 0312 and E496 as the catalytical residues and three Arg residues in the active site. Those residues have homologous in all family 37 trehalases including Spodoptera frugiperda trehalase (0322, E520, R169, R227, R287). To test the role of these residues, mutants of trehalase were produced. All mutants were at least four orders of magnitude less active than wild type trehalase and no structural difference between these mutants and wild type enzyme were discernible by circular dichroism. D322A and E520 pH-activity profile lacked the alkaline arm and the acid arm, respectively, suggesting that D322 is the acid and E520 the basic catalyst. Azide increases E520A activity three times, confirming its action as the basic catalyst. Taking into account the decrease in activity after substitution for alanine residue, the three arginine residues are as important as the catalytical ones to trehalase activity. This clarifies the previous misidentification of an Arg residue as the acid catalyst. A massive amount has been written about forecasting but few articles are written about the development of time series models of call volumes for emergency services. In this study, we use different techniques for forecasting and make the comparison of the techniques for the call volume of the emergency service Rescue 1122 Lahore, Pakistan. For the purpose of this study data is taken from emergency calls of Rescue 1122 from 1st January 2008 to 31 December 2009 and 731 observations are used. Our goal is to develop a simple model that could be used for forecasting the daily call volume. Two different approaches are used for forecasting the daily call volume Box and Jenkins (ARIMA) methodology and Smoothing methodology. We generate the models for forecasting of call volume and present a comparison of the two different techniques.

The potential changes to the territory of the Russian Arctic open up unique possibilities for the development of tourism. More favourable transport opportunities along the Northern Sea Route (NSR) create opportunities for tourism development based on the utilisation of the extensive areas of sea shores and river basins. A major challenge for the Russian Arctic sea and river ports is their strong cargo transport orientation originated by natural resource extraction industries. A careful assessment of the prospects of current and future tourism development is presented here based on the development of regions located along the shores of the Arctic ocean (including Murmansk and Arkhangelsk oblast, Nenets Autonomous okrug (AO), Yamal-Nenets AO, Taymyr AO, Republic of Sakha, Chykotsky AO). An evaluation of the present development of tourism in maritime cities suggests that a considerable qualitative and quantitative increase of tourism activities organised by domestic tourism firms is made virtually impossible. There are several factors contributing to this. The previously established Soviet system of state support for the investments into the port facilities as well as the sea fleet were not effectively replaced by creation of new structures. The necessary investments for reconstruction could be contributed by the federal government but the priorities are not set towards the increased passenger transportation. Having in mind, increased environmental pressures in this highly sensitive area it is especially vital to establish a well-functioning monitoring and rescue system in the situation of ever increasing risks which come not only from the increased transports along the NSR, but also from the exploitation of the offshore oil and gas reserves in the Arctic seas. The capacity and knowledge established in Nordic countries (Norway, Finland) concerning cruise tourism should not be underestimated and the already functioning cooperation in Barents Region should expand towards this particular segment of the tourism industry. The current stage of economic development in Russia makes it clear that tourism development is not able to compete with the well-needed increase in the cargo transportation, which means that Russia’s fleet is going to be utilised by other industries. However, opening up this area to both local and international visitors could contribute to the economic prosperity of these remote areas and if carefully managed could sustain already existing maritime cities along the shores of the Arctic Ocean.

”Forever missed – never forgotten”: Emotion and action in a swedish voluntary search and rescue organisation The article explores the phenomenon of voluntary policing, through a case study of the voluntary search and rescue group Missing People Sweden (MPS). The article focuses on how a collectively upheld emotionology guide members’ views on the problem MPS is engaging, how this problem should be engaged, and why people should join MPS in its activities. The material used was gathered in spring 2014; through eight semi-structured interviews, document studies and four participant observations of the organisation’s activites. The results indicate that MPS members relate their views to an emotionology consisting of two separate themes; one of equality and collectivism, and one of individualism and meritocracy. The article demonstrates that the Tönniesian terms Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft can both be applied to describe the organisation’s social environment. It also demonstrates that the Tönniesian dichotomy is a theoretical concept that is suited to the analysis of voluntary policing groups.

The ability to appropriately interact with the environment is crucial to an organism’s survival. The establishment of functional sensory systems, such as the bristles and eyes in Drosophila, is a critical event during the development of the organism. The transcription factor D Pax2 is involved in the differentiation of the shaft and glial cells in the developing bristle (Kavaler et al., Dev, 126:2261-2272, 1999) and of the cone and primary pigment cells in the developing eye (Fu and Noll, Genes Dev, 11:389-405, 1997). How D-Pax2 contributes to distinct differentiative pathways in different cell types is not known. Recent work by Anna Czechowski and Katherine Harmon (personal communication) identified a mutation in the D-Pax2 gene that introduced a stop codon at the end of exon 9, effectively truncating the protein. This mutation affects bristle, but not eye, development. We thus suspected regions after exon 9 are required for D-Pax2 function only in the bristles and may also be associated with alternative splicing of the D Pax2 transcript. We plan to assess the role of the carboxy terminal region of the protein by establishing transgenic lines bearing rescue constructs of D-Pax2 with either the complete coding sequence or with deletions of specific exons. To date, we have generated the first rescue construct bearing the complete coding region of the gene driven by a 3 KB upstream regulatory region of D-Pax2 and are currently generating transgenic fly lines with this construct.

This project involves the design and implementation of a global electronic tracking system intended for use by trans-oceanic vessels, using the technology of the U.S. Government's Global Positioning System (GPS) and a wireless connection to a networked computer. Traditional navigation skills are being replaced with highly accurate electronics. GPS receivers, computers, and mobile communication are becoming common among both recreational and commercial boaters. With computers and advanced communication available throughout the maritime world, information can be shared instantaneously around the globe. This ability to monitor one's whereabouts from afar can provide an increased level of safety and efficiency. Current navigation software seldom includes the capability of providing upto-the-minute navigation information for remote display. Remote access to this data will allow boat owners to track the progress of their boats, land-based organizations to monitor weather patterns and suggest course changes, and school groups to track the progress of a vessel and learn about navigation and science. The software developed in this project allows navigation information from a vessel to be remotely transmitted to a land-based server, for interpretation and deployment to remote users over the Internet. This differs from current software in that it allows the tracking of one vessel by multiple users and provides a means for two-way text messaging between users and the vesseI. Beyond the coastal coverage provided by cellular telephones, mobile communication is advancing rapidly. Current tools such as satellite telephones and single-sideband radio enable worldwide communications, including the ability to connect to the Internet. If current trends continue, portable global communication will be available at a reasonable price and Internet connections on boats will become more common.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a eficácia, a segurança e a farmacocinética da talidomida nos pacientes com câncer colorretal metastático. Dezessete pacientes com adenocarcinoma colorretal metastático, previamente tratados com pelo menos um regime de quimioterapia, foram incluídos no estudo. Os pacientes eram inicialmente tratados com talidomida 200 mg/dia, com um aumento de dose de 200mg a cada duas semanas, até atingir a dose máxima de 800 mg/dia. Os pacientes eram reavaliados a cada duas semanas para toxicidade e a cada 8 semanas para taxa de resposta através de exames de imagem. A farmacocinética foi caracterizada em quatro pacientes no nível de dose de 200 mg/dia.Todos os dezessete pacientes incluídos foram avaliados no perfil de toxicidade e quatorze pacientes nos critérios de taxa de resposta. A talidomida foi bem tolerada, sendo os principais efeitos colaterais a sonolência, a tontura, a xerostomia e a constipação. Não houve nenhuma resposta objetiva ou doença estável após oito semanas de tratamento. A sobrevida global mediana foi de 3,6 meses. A talidomida é bem tolerada como agente único de tratamento, mas não demonstrou nenhuma atividade antitumoral em pacientes com câncer colorretal metastático, já tratados previamente com outro regime de quimioterapia. Apesar disto, futuros estudos com este agente em estágios iniciais desta neoplasia devem ser considerados, quando as propriedades antiangiogênicas desta droga poderão ser mais relevantes para a progressão da doença.

O prognóstico das crianças com tumores sólidos malignos recidivados ou refratários permanece desfavorável apesar dos avanços significativos alcançados nos últimos anos em Oncologia Pediátrica. Estudos visando identificar opções terapêuticas mais eficazes torna-se, portanto, de fundamental importância para estes pacientes. Existem evidências na literatura que demonstram que as drogas utilizadas neste estudo tem, quando usadas isoladamente ou em combinação, atividade em neoplasias malignas recidivadas ou refratárias. A Carboplatina (C) apresenta respostas objetivas em um grande número de pacientes pediátricos com câncer, assim como a Ifosfamida (I) e o Etoposide (E). A combinação destas 3 drogas, em um regime que passaremos a designar como ICE, tem potencial de aumentar os índices de resposta, embora aumente também os riscos de toxicidade. O objetivo principal deste estudo foi avaliar a resposta e a toxicidade deste regime em pacientes com tumores sólidos malignos recidivados ou refratários diagnosticados antes dos 18 anos de idade. O ICE consistiu de Ifosfamida na dose 3g/m2/dia IV por 3 dias consecutivos associada a mesna como uroprotetor, em doses equivalentes, Etoposide 160 mg/m2/dia IV por 3 dias consecutivos e Carboplatina 400 mg/m2/dia IV durante 2 dias. Os ciclos foram repetidos com intervalos de 21 a 28 dias. Foram revisados 21 prontuários de pacientes tratados com este regime, entre julho de 1996 a novembro de 2000. Todos os pacientes foram avaliados para toxicidade e 19 pacientes foram avaliados para resposta. Um total de 93 ciclos de ICE foram administrados. A média dos ciclos de ICE recebidos foi de 4,4 (1-8). Os pacientes receberam um máximo de 8 ciclos. Todos os pacientes incluídos no estudo, receberam no mínimo 1 esquema quimioterápico prévio. A taxa de resposta completa + parcial foi de 52,6%. Os efeitos tóxicos incluíram mielossupressão, febre, naúseas ou vômitos, nefrotoxicidade, leve disfunção hepática e neurotoxicidade. Em 78% dos ciclos houve neutropenia grau 4 (contagem de neutrófilos menor de 500/microlitro). Trombocitopenia graus 3 e 4 foi observado em 73,1% dos ciclos administrados e em 82% destes foram necessárias transfusões de plaquetas. Anemia grau 3 a 4 ocorreu em 61,2% dos ciclos e em 75 (80,6%) dos 93 ciclos administrados foi necessário transfusão de glóbulos vermelhos. Nenhum dos pacientes apresentou hematúria macroscópica e em 19,3 % dos ciclos houve hematúria microscópica. Duas crianças apresentaram nefrotoxicidade tubular renal. Em conclusão, este estudo mostra que o ICE é uma combinação ativa em crianças com tumores sólidos refratários/recidivados. Embora esteja associado a mielossupressão severa, a incidência de infecção encontra-se dentro de índices considerados aceitáveis para este grupo de pacientes. O dano tubular renal é a toxicidade não hematológica mais significativa e, portanto, recomenda-se cuidados e monitorização da função renal durante o período de tratamento. Embora o uso do ICE seja factível mesmo sem o uso de fatores de crescimento hematopoiéticos em pacientes previamente submetidos a quimioterapia, a maioria deles necessita terapia de suporte, principalmente de transfusões de hemoderivados e antimicrobianos. A identificação de pacientes e patologias com maior índice de respostas requer a realização de estudos no futuro com maior número de pacientes a nível multi-institucional.

O presente trabalho tenta mostrar a importância da aplicação de novas tecnologias no mundo globalizado, especialmente a rede Internet, como ferramenta indispensável na melhoria da qualidade da divulgação dos estudos produzidos pelo Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística - IBGE, pela Coordenação de Comunicação Social do órgão. A pesquisa valeu-se de documentos administrativos, tais como Decretos, Resoluções, Portarias, Boletins de Serviço, entre outros materiais disponíveis que pudessem auxiliar nessa memória institucional. Utilizou como embasamento teórico a literatura especializada e para a pesquisa qualitativa aplicou a metodologia pertinente à pesquisa com coleta de dados da História Oral. Com o propósito de resgatar e percorrer o caminho histórico da criação do site do IBGE na Internet e a ampliação de seu uso por localidades do Brasil, esta pesquisa priorizou a importância que a Internet teve para a divulgação e disseminação dos trabalhos produzidos pelo IBGE. Para poder analisar esse processo foi preciso recorrer a alguns conceitos capazes de ajudar na reflexão sobre as transformações em curso, tais como: inovação tecnológica, cultura comunicacional, globalização, identidade global, identidade nacional, entre outros.

A presente dissertação se propõe a resgatar a participação de Augusto Meyer nas primeiras iniciativas de proteção ao patrimônio cultural do Rio Grande do Sul, entre os anos de 1937 e 1938, por meio da análise da correspondência a ele enviada pelo então diretor do Serviço do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional - SPHAN, Rodrigo Melo Franco de Andrade. A referida correspondência integra o arquivo privado pessoal de Augusto Meyer que se encontra sob a guarda do Arquivo-Museu de Literatura Brasileira - AMLB, da Fundação Casa de Rui Barbosa-FCRB. O trabalho em questão parte do pressuposto de que os arquivos privados pessoais se constituem em importante fonte documental para a pesquisa histórica. Como produto final apresentamos a edição anotada das cartas e telegramas dirigidas a Meyer, acompanhados de um índice geral.

Com a implementação do Acordo de Basiléia II no Brasil, os grandes conglomerados bancários poderão utilizar o chamado modelo IRB (Internal Ratings Based) para cômputo da parcela de risco de crédito da exigência de capital. O objetivo deste trabalho é mensurar a diferença entre o capital mínimo exigido (e, conseqüentemente, do Índice de Basiléia) calculado pela abordagem IRB em relação à regulamentação atual. Para isso, foram estimadas probabilidades de inadimplência (PD) utilizando matrizes de transição construídas a partir dos dados da Central de Risco de Crédito (SCR) do Banco Central do Brasil. This thesis is about change, discontinuity, instability. The theoretical perspective used to analyses the changing process was Institutional Theory, which argues that institutions has a long-term time. The institutional change has always be seen as a structural process and a incremental one, but this research aimed rescue the dynamic side of institutional change, understanding that as a result of deinstitutionalization and institutionalization processes. In order to understand the deinstitutionalization and institutionalization processes, we try to understand the concepts of interactive and iterative. So, it was possible understand that these process are interdependent and has to be understood as both side of institutional change. Nevertheless, it couldn¿t have an institutional vacuum, but a hybrid order or plural one, where a set of institutional forces would find its legitimacy. The Discourses Analysis supports this research, which was developed in Peru. A group of University professors was interviewed and we noticed that there are a lot of practices that act as micro institutional rules. In that way, we can admit that there is no vacuum, but a plural institutional order.

Resgate histórico do Movimento Organizado dos trabalhadores técnico administrativos da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro - UFRJ. O presente estudo tem como objetivo central, descrever, de que forma a ascensão da ação organizada dos funcionários da UFRJ - traduzida, inicialmente, na figura da Associação - desencadeou na transformação de sua entidade representativa em Sindicato da categoria. Os sujeitos da pesquisa referem-se à dirigentes sindicais, que tiveram uma inserção significativa nesse processo. Os principais protagonistas dessa história, relatam fatos marcantes, os quais, muitos deles, não se encontram registrados nos acervos da organização estudada. A análise de documentos que identificam essa história, também foi utilizada como apoio ao estudo. A ênfase do trabalho está voltada à pesquisa descritiva e analítica. A pesquisa de campo ocorre no Sindicato dos Trabalhadores em Educação da UFRJ, situado na llha do Fundão. A análise do material empírico indica que o processo de transformação - de associativismo para sindicalismo - não se dá na passagem formal, ocorrida em 93. Mas, a partir da década de 80, quando um grupo de servidores pertencentes à Unidades diversas, com posturas ideológicas e políticas semelhantes, se insere, gradativamente, no órgão. Passa a impetrar uma prática político-reivindicatória, diferenciada das atuações recreativa e assistencialista que permearam as gestões anteriores. Contudo, em relação à descrição dessa história, a pretensão não foi a de pontuar uma evolução linear, mas a de também identificar questões que determinaram momentos de instabilidade, bem como de reavaliação, por parte dos sujeitos envolvidos. Constitui, portanto, um válido instrumento para avaliação das práticas, objetivos, políticas e culturas que permearam a atuação desse movimento, elaborando questões que possam contribuir para a superação de eventuais equívocos ou entraves no momento presente.
