Supergene Enrichment of Silver Ores with Special Reference to those from Neihart, Montana.

In the development of a technique it was necessary to learn the fundamentals of ore microscopy as applied to the various minerals of silver, which included the use of reflected polarized light, etch reactions, micro­chemical analysis, and sight recognition of mineral. In addition it was necessary to become familiar with the accepted criteria of sequence, replacement, and other textural phenomena.

The Staining Effect of the Hydrochloric Acid-Chromate Trioxide Solution on the Minerals of the Chalcocite-Stibnite-Galena Ternary System.

The object of this work has been to devise a method by which the different phases in the chalcocite-stibnite-galena ternary system may be identified. As the mineralogists have no precise methods for the identification of these phases, a hydrochloric acid-chromate trioxide staining solution was employed.

A Metallurgical Study of Gold Ores

Gold is widely distributed in the earth's crust in small quantities. Gold is found in nature in two forms; the element itself and the compound gold telluride. In all cases, silver in some proportion is an alloying constituent.

A Study and Application of the Process of Supergene Enrichment of Silver Ores.

In many deposits of silver ores the grade of the ore de­creases considerably a few hundred feet below the surface. It is believed that in many cases the better ores owe their richness in part to the process of sulphide enrichment. It is recognized, however, that many rich silver ores are hypogene deposits that have been affected very little, if any, by processes of enrichment.

The Effect of Temperature on the Rate of Dissolution of Gold in Cyanide Solutions which have a Constant Oxygen Content.

Since the development of cyanidation into a highly efficient process for treating gold ores, many papers have been written on its various aspects. Although, there has been much work done on it, the chemistry of the reaction is not yet completely understood.

The Presence of Rhenium in Montana Manganese Ores.

Rhenium properties offer many interesting possibilities, therefore any ores containing rhenium would be of considerable value. Its close relationship to manganese in the periodic table led to the belief that manganese ores would be an excellent place to search for the metal. Investigation of the literature of rhenium revealed that no ore was known to contain more than 0.001 per cent of rhenium.

The Geology and Mineralogy of the Independence Mining District

From 1888 until 1893 the district was a booming mining camp. Seven stamp mills were running and ore was be­ing mined from the Independence, King Solomon, Poorman, Golden, Hidden Treasure and Crown claims. The town of Independence, which was on the Boulder River at the fork of Basin Creek, boasted a population of 400 people.

Report on the Ermont Mine Sec. 35, T. 6 S., R. 11 W., Beaverhead County, Montana

An examination of the Ermont Mine was requested by the owners, Messrs. J. R. Bowles and R. B. Caswell, to determine the amount and grade of ore developed, the advisability of constructing a mill at the present time, and to recommend future development work.

Some Chromite Deposits in Madison County, Montana

Chromite occurs in Madison County, Montana, in two areas, one three miles southwest of Silver Star, the other five miles southeast of Sheridan. The ore bodies are small, lenticular masses surrounded by metamorphosed sedimentary rocks of the pre-Cambrian Cherry Creek series. The ore was deposited from the hydrothermal solutions which serpentinized the surrounding metamorphic host rocks.

An Investigation of the Ores of the Big Seven Mine, Neihart, Montana

During the course of this investigation of the ores of the Big Seven mine, Neihart, Montana, the writer has attempted, through a mi­croscopic study of polished sections, to ascertain the hypogene or supergene character of the ore minerals present in the ore suite.

Chromite Deposits Near Red Lodge and Silver Star, Montana

The Red Lodge and Silver Star chromite deposits of Montana have stimulated much interest during periods of war. The Red Lodge deposit is 25 miles southwest of Red Lodge which is also the nearest railroad point. Several workings are scattered throughout the area, exposing lense-like ore bodies averaging 33% chrome oxide. Silver Star is a much smaller deposit 5 miles west of Silver Star, Montana, which is its nearest rail­road point. Lenses of chromite are exposed by pits and trench­es, which average approximately 36% chromic oxide.

A Study of the Dissolution of Pyrolusite in Sulphuric Acid

With an eye to the future development of its re­sources, the large deposits of low-grade manganese ore within Montana's boundaries show great promise of developing an important industry. With the pre­sent war demands and the possibility of a future mar­ket it is essential that work expended to utilize this important mineral.
