Synthesis, spectroscopic characterization and radiosensitizing properties of acetato-bridged copper(II) complexes with 5-nitroimidazole drugs

Three novel acetato-bridged dinuclear copper(II) complexes with 5-nitroimidazoles (CuAcNtrim) and the known copper-acetato-metronidazole have been prepared by an environment-friendly route and spectroscopically characterized. The CuAcNtrim compounds of formula [Cu(2)(mu-O(2)CCH(3))(4)Ntrim(2)], where Ntrim = metronidazole (1), secnidazole (2), tinidazole (3) or nimorazole (4), exhibit dimeric copper-acetato paddle-wheel structures with Ntrim axial ligands coordinated to copper(II) ions through the N(3) atoms of the imidazole rings. EPR data indicate antiferromagnetic behavior for this novel series of copper complexes. The constant coupling has been found to decrease along with the increasing of basicity of the Ntrim axial ligand. The CuAcNtrim complexes and the correspondent Ntrim parent drugs have shown radiosensitizer properties for Hep2 (human larynx cancer) cell line in vitro. The best enhancement of radiosensitizer activity upon coordination of the Ntrim drug to copper(II) has been found for the nimorazole compound which has the strongest Cu-Ntrim bond and exhibits the highest lipophilicity within the series of CuAcNtrim complexes. Synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of polymer and oligomers of ortho-phenylenediamine

Poly(ortho-phenylenediamine) and oligomers of ortho-phenylenediamine were chemically synthesized and characterized by UV-vis, (1)H and (13)C NMR, FTIR and resonance Raman spectroscopies. Polymerization of ortho-phenylenediamine in HCl medium with ammonium persulfate only leads the trimer compound, in disagreement with some previous reports. Nevertheless, in acetic acid medium it was possible to prepare a polymer constituted by ladder phenazinic segments with different protonation levels and quinonediimine rings (polyaniline-like). X-ray absorption at N K-edge (N K XANES), X-ray photoelectron (XPS) and Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies were used to determine the different kinds of nitrogen presents in this class of polymer. N K XANES spectrum of poly(ortho-phenylenediamine) shows the band of -N=nitrogen of non-protonated phenazinic rings at 398.2 eV. In addition, XPS and N K XANES data confirm the presence of different types of protonated nitrogens in the polymeric poly(ortho-phenylenediamine) chain and the EPR spectrum shows that the polymer has a very weak polaronic signal. An expeditious synthesis of hexahydrobenzo[f]isochromenes and of hexahydrobenzo[f]isoquinoline via iodine-catalyzed Prins and aza-Prins cyclization

Homoallylic alcohols (primary, secondary, or tertiary containing an endocyclic or an exocyclic double bond) react with equimolar amounts of aldehydes (aliphatic or aromatic) and ketones (aliphatic) in the presence of 5 mol % of iodine. This Prins cyclization was used in the preparation of hexahydrobenzo[f]isochromenes and of a 4-hydroxy-tetrahydropyran, in 54-81% yield. The procedure is also efficient for an aza-Prins cyclization of a homoallylic sulfonamide and benzaldehyde, producing a hexahydrobenzo[f]isoquinoline. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A three-dimensional network constructed from the assembly of 1,3-diaminopropane-copper(II) and tetracyanopalladate(II) moieties

The coordination polymer [Cu(Pd(CN)(4))(pn)](n) (pn = 1,3-diaminopropane) has been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure showed that three cyano groups of each [Pd(CN)(4)] unit bridge Cu(II) centers leading to the formation of a three-dimensional network. A series of bifurcated hydrogen bonds between the amino groups of the diamine and the nonbridging cyano groups of the cyanometallate result in the organization of suprarnolecular chains and rings along the polymer. Towards to the trans-bromination of 2-styrylpyridine with a palladacycle intermediary and structure analysis for trans-1,2-dibromo-2-styrylpyridine

The simple halogenation of alkynes in conventional organic reactions gives a blend of cis and trans isomers. It is proposed then, a synthesis of stereospecific halogenation of alkynes in trans position, using palladacycle as intermediaries. The recrystallization of the compound obtained by bromination of 2-Styrylpyridine, with cyclepalladium intermediary results in a single crystal, which is subjected to X-ray diffraction. The crystal packing is established through weak interactions of three types. The first one is of the type pi x pi interactions, from symmetry operation, between the centroids. The second one is of the type C-X center dot center dot center dot pi interactions. And the last type is an anomalous intermolecular interaction between halogens, C-X center dot center dot center dot X-C, with bond distances smaller than the sum of the van der Waals radii. The conformation on the C=C bond is trans and the dihedral angle between the aromatic rings is (with esd approximate) 18.1(3)degrees. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Anomalous spin-related quantum phase in mesoscopic hole rings

We have obtained numerically exact results for the spin-related geometric quantum phases that arise in p-type semiconductor ring structures. The interplay between gate-controllable (Rashba) spin splitting and quantum-confinement-induced mixing between hole-spin states causes a much higher sensitivity of magnetoconductance oscillations to external parameters than previously expected. Our results imply a much-enhanced functionality of hole-ring spin-interference devices and shed new light on recent experimental findings.

Movies, Mind and Meaning : Studying Audience and Favourite Films

Construction of identity and meaning is becoming increasingly important in both media studies and religion scholarship. (Lövheim, 2004) Meaning construction outside traditional religion has become more interesting for religious studies and what individuals in the audience do with all messages circulated through media in everyday life has attended increasing interest within media studies (Stout and Buddenbaum, 2001). Motion pictures, soap operas and advertising are all examples of media contents which generate ideas among its audience which to a various degree are used as resources within the construction of identity (Jansson, 2001). The investigation of what modern humankind’s world views look like and what components they are composed of, in this context seems to be an important topic of investigation (Holm and Björkqvist, 1996). The ways in which the development of media has effected the daily lives of individuals is interest as is the nature of the self and the ways in which the process of self-formation is affected by the profusion of mediated materials (Thompson, 1995). Film and religion are my interest within this larger frame. The topic is not exactly new but the combination of film and religion has during the last ten years resulted in a rapidly growing number of books by scholars interested in this field (Lyden, 2003). One growing focus is on the role that films can and do play within the emerging and developing valuesystem of people in the West today (Marsh, 2004). The British theologian Clive Marsh’s point of departure is very similar to my own. Viewers bring to a film life-experience, immediate concerns and worldviews and the exploration of this interplay between movies and the interpreting process of meaning making is the very focus in this paper. Theoretically, the semeiological model of Alf Linderman is combined with cultural cognitive approaches used by a number of Scandinavian media scholars developing perspectives in audience theory (Linderman, 1996, Höijer and Werner, 1998). 13 individuals, their favourite movie and what it means to them in their life My aim is to examine how individuals comprehend film and what the meaning process look like. In this paper I present the outcome of 13 interviews with young people about their favourite film. I suggest how it is possible to interpret how they interrelate film comprehension with their personal beliefs and their culturally constructed worldview from a sociocognitive point of view. Examples of films chosen range from Disneys Lion King (1994), sciencefiction and fantasy successes like The Matrix (1999) and Lord of the Rings (2001) or the next best movie ever according to www.IMdb.com The Shawshank Redemption (1994) as well as the Swedish blockbuster Så som i himmelen (2004), aka “As in Heaven”.

On invariant Rings of Sylow subgroups of finite classical groups

In this thesis we study the invariant rings for the Sylow p-subgroups of the nite classical groups. We have successfully constructed presentations for the invariant rings for the Sylow p-subgroups of the unitary groups GU(3; Fq2) and GU(4; Fq2 ), the symplectic group Sp(4; Fq) and the orthogonal group O+(4; Fq) with q odd. In all cases, we obtained a minimal generating set which is also a SAGBI basis. Moreover, we computed the relations among the generators and showed that the invariant ring for these groups are a complete intersection. This shows that, even though the invariant rings of the Sylow p-subgroups of the general linear group are polynomial, the same is not true for Sylow p-subgroups of general classical groups. We also constructed the generators for the invariant elds for the Sylow p-subgroups of GU(n; Fq2 ), Sp(2n; Fq), O+(2n; Fq), O-(2n + 2; Fq) and O(2n + 1; Fq), for every n and q. This is an important step in order to obtain the generators and relations for the invariant rings of all these groups.

Renal and vascular effects of the natriuretic peptide isolated from Crotalus durissus cascavella venom

Crotalus durissus cascavella is a snake that is usually found in the scrublands of northeast Brazil. The components of its venom may have effects on the vascular and renal systems. Recently, a new bradykinin inhibitory peptide has been identified in the venom of the Crotalinae family. The aim of the present study was to investigate the renal and vascular effects of the natriuretic peptide isolated from the venom of Crotalus durissus cascavella (NP2_Casca). The chromatographic profile showed the fractionation of substances identified as convulxin, gyroxin, crotoxin and crotamine, as well as fractions V and VI. The electrophoretic profile of fraction V consisted of several bands ranging from approximately 6 kDa to 13 kDa, while fraction VI showed only two main electrophoretic bands with molecular weights of approximately 6 and 14 kDa. Reverse-phase chromatography showed that NP2_Casca corresponds to about 18% of fraction VI and that this fraction is the main natriuretic peptide. NP2_Casca was compared to other natriuretic peptides from other sources of snake venom. All amino acid sequences that were compared showed a consensus region of XGCFGX, XLDRIX and XSGLGCX. The group treated with NP2-Casca showed an increase in perfusion pressure, renal vascular resistance, urinary flow and glomerular filtration rate. The percent of total and proximal tubular transport of sodium was reduced significantly after administration of the peptide. The mean arterial pressure showed a dose-dependent decrease after infusion of NP2_Casca, and an increase in nitrite production. In the aortic ring assay, NP2_Casca caused a relaxant effect in endothelium-intact thoracic aortic rings precontracted with phenylephrine in the presence and absence of isatin. NP2_Casca failed to relax the aortic rings precontracted with an isosmotic potassium Krebs-Henseleit solution. In conclusion, the natriuretic peptide isolated from Crotalus durissus cascavella venom produced renal and vascular effects. NP2_Casca reduced total and proximal sodium tubular transport, leading to an increase in sodium excretion, thereby demonstrating a diuretic action. A hypotensive effect was displayed in an arterial pressure assay, with an increase in nitrite production, suggesting a possible vasoactive action. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in a quantum ring: Eccentricity and electric-field effects

The effects of an in-plane electric field and eccentricity on the electronic spectrum of a GaAs quantum ring in a perpendicular magnetic field are studied. The effective-mass equation is solved by two different methods: an adiabatic approximation and a diagonalization procedure after a conformal mapping. It is shown that the electric field and the eccentricity may suppress the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations of the lower energy levels. Simple expressions for the threshold energy and the number of flat energy bands are found. In the case of a thin and eccentric ring, the intensity of a critical field which compensates the main effects of eccentricity is determined. The energy spectra are found in qualitative agreement with previous experimental and theoretical works on anisotropic rings.
