We present calculations of the time delay between single and double ionization of helium, obtained from full-dimensionality numerical integrations of the helium-laser Schroedinger equation. The notion of a quantum mechanical time delay is defined in terms of the interval between correlated bursts of single and double ionization. Calculations are performed at 390 and 780 nm in laser intensities that range from 2 X 10^14 to 14 X 10^14 W /cm^2. We find results consistent with the rescattering model of double ionization but supporting its classical interpretation only at 780 nm.

This article investigates the concept of regionalism in the EU and its relationship to changing conceptions of the nation-statehood in Ireland and Britain. More specifically, it examines how the notion of regionalism has developed in official discourse during states' adaptation to both internal challenges and the process of European integration. I explore this question through an analysis of the British and Irish state elites approaches to the Northern Ireland conflict and their perceptions of European regionalism in this context. In identifying the differences and, indeed, similarities between these states' approaches to European and regional dynamics, I develop new perspective on post-Agreement Northern Ireland and the concept of multilevel governance.

The arterivirus equine arteritis virus nonstructural protein 10 (nsp10) has previously been predicted to contain a Zn finger structure linked to a superfamily 1 (SF1) helicase domain. A recombinant form of nsp10, MBP-nsp10, was produced in Escherichia coli as a fusion protein with the maltose-binding protein. The protein was partially purified by affinity chromatography and shown to have ATPase activity that was strongly stimulated by poly(dT), poly(U), and poly(dA) but not by poly(G). The protein also had both RNA and DNA duplex-unwinding activities that required the presence of 5' single-stranded regions on the partial-duplex substrates, indicating a 5'-to-3' polarity in the unwinding reaction. Results of this study suggest a close functional relationship between the arterivirus nsp10 and the coronavirus helicase, for which NTPase and duplex-unwinding activities were recently demonstrated. In a number of biochemical properties, both arterivirus and coronavirus SF1 helicases differ significantly from the previously characterized RNA virus SF1 and SF2 enzymes. Thus, the combined data strongly support the idea that nidovirus helicases may represent a separate group of RNA virus-encoded helicases with distinct properties.

RET is a receptor tyrosine kinase that mediates key signaling events, and promotes cell survival, development, and migration. Activation of RET requires a ligand from the glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) family and a co-receptor from the GDNF family receptor α (GFRα). Alternative splicing of RET leads to two major isoforms, RET9 and RET51, that contain distinct C-terminal amino acids. Differences in their cytoplasmic tails confer differential binding to adaptor proteins, and in this study, the membrane cytoskeletal-linker protein ezrin was shown in an interaction with RET51, but not RET9, in a ligand- and kinase-dependent manner. Results indicated that Y1096 on RET51 is the ezrin recruitment site, and the adaptor protein Grb2 may mediate this interaction. These results suggest that ezrin may play a role in the downstream signaling and recycling pathways of RET51. Thus, the identified novel interaction may provide insight in the longer term into how ezrin and RET51 contribute together to functional processes such as cell migration and invasion.
