The university course timetabling problem involves assigning a given number of events into a limited number of timeslots and rooms under a given set of constraints; the objective is to satisfy the hard constraints (essential requirements) and minimize the violation of soft constraints (desirable requirements). In this study we employed a Dual-sequence Simulated Annealing (DSA) algorithm as an improvement algorithm. The Round Robin (RR) algorithm is used to control the selection of neighbourhood structures within DSA. The performance of our approach is tested over eleven benchmark datasets. Experimental results show that our approach is able to generate competitive results when compared with other state-of-the-art techniques.

Ag/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts have been characterized in-depth during different thermo-chemical treatments by in situ diffuse reflectance UV-visible spectroscopy and quasi in situ Transmission Electron Microscopy. The combination of these techniques indicates that sintering and redispersion of silver is clearly observed from the increases and decreases in the absorption band intensity over the range of 250-600 nm due to the presence of silver clusters and silver nanoparticles. These results allow us to study the effect of the reaction feed on the metal dispersion at different operation conditions and discuss the formation of active sites during the selective catalytic reduction of O-2 with excess H-2 in the presence of unsaturated hydrocarbons. In this case high catalytic activity and selectivity toward the oxygen removal was achieved for this catalyst. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The phase structure evolution of high impact polypropylene copolymer (IPC) during molten-state annealing and its influence on crystallization behaviour were studied. An entirely different architecture of the IPC melt was observed after being annealed, and this architecture resulted in variations of the crystallization behaviour. In addition, it was found that the core-shell structure of the dispersed phase was completely destroyed and the sizes of the dispersed domains increased sharply after being annealed at 200 degrees C for 200 min. Through examination of the coarseness of the phase morphology using phase contrast microscopy (PCM), it was found that a co-continuous structure and an abnormal 'sea-island' structure generally appeared with an increase in annealing time. The original matrix PP component appeared as a dispersed phase, whereas the copolymer components formed a continuous 'sea-island' structure. This change is ascribed to the large tension induced by solidification at the phase interface and the great content difference between the components. When the temperature was reduced the structure reverted to its original form. With increasing annealing time, the spherulite profiles became more defined and the spherulite birefringence changed from vague to clear. Overall crystallization rates and nucleation densities decreased, but the spherulite radial growth rates remained almost constant, indicating that molten-state annealing mainly affects the nucleation ability of IPC, due to a coarsened microstructure and decreased interface area. The results of a study of the variation in photocatalytic activity of TiO2, as measured by its ability to photomineralise 4-chlorophenol, as a function of temperature used to anneal the TiO2, are reported. Heat treatment of the TiO2 leads to a marked decrease in its photocatalytic activity at annealing temperatures above 600-degrees-C. This decrease is associated with a concomitant drop in the specific surface area of the TiO2, owing to particle sintering, rather than the anatase to rutile transformation, which occurs largely at temperatures above 700-degrees-C. There is a reasonable correlation between photocatalytic activity and the surface area of the aggregate particles in the dispersions of the different heat-treated TiO2 samples.

Herein we investigate the use of CuO-ZnO-Al2O3 (CZA) with different solid acid catalysts (NH(4)ZSM-5. HZSM-5 or gamma-Al2O3) for the production of dimethyl ether from syngas. It was found that of the solid acids, which are necessary for the dehydration function of the admixed system, the CZA/HZSM-5 bifunctional catalyst with a 0.25 acid fraction showed high stability over a continuous period of 212 h.

As this particular system was observed to loose around 16.2% of its initial activity over this operating period this study further investigates the CZA/HZSM-5 bifunctional catalyst in terms of its deactivation mechanisms. TPO investigations showed that the catalyst deactivation was related to coke deposited on the metallic sites: interface between the metallic sites and the support near the metal-support: and on the support itself.

Low-temperature (<200 degrees C) hydrocarbon selective catalytic reduction of NOx has been achieved for the first time in the absence of hydrogen using a solvent-free mechanochemically prepared Ag/Al2O3 catalyst. Catalysts prepared by this ball-milling method show a remarkable increase in activity for the reduction of nitrogen oxides with octane by lowering the light-off temperature by up to 150 degrees C compared with a state-of-the-art 2 wt %Ag/Al2O3 catalyst prepared by wet impregnation. The best catalyst prepared from silver oxide showed 50% NOx conversion at 240 degrees C and 99%, at 302 degrees C. The increased activity is not due to an increased surface area of the support, but may be associated with a change in.the'defeet structure of the alumina surface, leading to the formation of the small silver clusters necessary for the activation of the octane without leading to total combustion. On the other hand, since one possible role of hydrogen is to remove inhibiting species from the silver, we cannot exclude some change in the chemical properties of the silver as a result of the ball-milling treatment.

Catalysts currently employed for the polymerization of ethylene have previously been found to deactivate in the presence of oxygen. It is, therefore, important that oxygen is removed from the ethylene feedstock prior to the polymerization. The Ag/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst exhibits excellent activity and selectivity toward oxygen reduction with hydrogen in the presence of ethylene. TAP vacuum pulse experiments have been utilised to understand the catalytic behaviour of the Ag/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst. TAP multi-pulse experiments have determined the types of active sites that are found on the Ag/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst, and the intrinsic activity of these sites. The lifetime of the reactive adsorbed oxygen intermediate has also been determined through TAP consecutive pulse experiments. Multi-pulse and consecutive pulse data have been combined with ethylene adsorption/desorption rate constants to provide an overview of the Ag/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst system.

The deactivation of a silver-based hydrocarbon selective catalytic reduction catalyst by SOx and the subsequent regeneration under various operating conditions has been investigated. Using a sulfur trap based on a silica-supported catalyst it was found that, for a Ag/SiO2 + Ag/Al2O3 combination, the negative effect of SO2 on the n-octane-SCR reaction can be eliminated under normal operating conditions. The trap can be regenerated by hydrogen at low temperatures or at higher temperatures using a hydrocarbon reductant.
