On the Edge of the World: Trauma and Twinship Selfobject Needs in Mrs. Dalloway

Alienation and aloneness appear as common themes in the experience of those impacted by trauma. Self psychology theorists, including contemporary proponents of intersubjectivity theory, have also discussed the ways in which alienation and disconnection from others permeate the experience of post-traumatic stress disorder. This discussion has highlighted the importance and centrality of twinship selfobject needs in providing a relational home for the emotional pain associated with trauma. These phenomena are especially apparent when one encounters the experiences of those combat veterans who have attempted to readjust to society upon returning home from military service. Using self psychology and intersubjectivity theory, this paper explores the ways that fiction, specifically Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway, can illuminate the ways that trauma negatively impacts twinship selfobject needs in combat veterans. In examining the character of Septimus Smith, this paper illustrates the estrangement, singularity, and alienation associated with post-traumatic stress, and how this state of being can collude with societal misunderstanding and repression to shatter the self's sense of belongingness with and connection to others.

Integrated Water Resources Management: Principles for Coordination in the Coal River Watershed, West Virginia

Mountaintop removal (MTR) coal mining has had a significant influence on the water sources within the Coal River watershed of West Virginia. Using an approach such as Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) may improve management for the long-term protection and sustainability of the Coal River watershed‰Ûªs water resources. This Capstone project analyzes current site-specific information related to water quality and quantity and the impacts of MTR in the region, reviews current management challenges, and identifies key stakeholders to be included in IWRM planning. This information provided a foundation for the development of a preliminary IWRM coordination plan for the Coal River watershed based on IWRM principles and guidelines. It is hoped that this preliminary plan will contribute to the development of a final coordinated IWRM plan.

Environment and health with respect to a poverty-related disease: the epidemiology of trachoma in Spain, 1925-1941

Trachoma currently represents one of the three main causes of ‘avoidable' blindness and reaches intolerable dimensions in many developing countries. It was endemic in many regions of eastern Spain until well into the twentieth century. The aim of this paper is to analyze the epidemiological development of this disease in contemporary Spain; to examine its determining factors, particularly environmental and sanitary/health factors, and, finally, to study the health care, environmental and socio-economic measures that led to its control and eradication. We believe that the historical approach not only highlights the role of environmental factors in the development of trachoma, but may also aid in understanding the current epidemiology of trachoma.

La arquitectura de la Obra Sindical del Hogar en la ciudad de Albacete: 1941-1981

En este estudio se presenta y analiza, proyectándola en su contexto, la producción de vivienda protegida acometida por la Obra Sindical del Hogar en la ciudad de Albacete, desde la creación de este organismo hasta su disolución, es decir, a lo largo de la dictadura franquista. La investigación viene, por un lado, a llenar el vacío que, en la bibliografía de referencia, existía, habida cuenta de que se trata de una arquitectura en su mayoría modesta, generalmente mal conservada, periférica y, en ocasiones, injustamente marginada que apenas ha interesado ni a los eruditos ni a los críticos. Por otro lado, el trabajo se alinea con el interés disciplinar que, desde hace ya bastante tiempo, despierta en el panorama nacional la vivienda social, tema clave tanto en el quehacer profesional de los arquitectos como en el conocimiento del devenir de la historia de la arquitectura moderna española y sus relaciones, intercambios e influencias con el ámbito internacional. Así, se estudian y documentan seis promociones que abarcan desde la escala del barrio (Barrio Hogar Nacional Sindicalista, al oeste del casco urbano), hasta la actuación puntual en un solar (Gabriel Ciscar, al norte), pasando por actuaciones que juegan con varios bloques y su composición (grupos San Juan Bautista, Emperador Carlos V o Lope de Vega, al sur), culminando con la construcción de un nuevo barrio (Hermanos Falcó), al dictado tanto de los aires que respira el urbanismo europeo (1ª fase), como de la entrega sin reservas a la especulación inmobiliaria (2ª fase, no realizada).
