Batch adsorption of fluoride onto manganese dioxide-coated activated alumina (MCAA) has been studied. Adsorption experiments were carried out at various pH (3–9), time interval (0–6 h), adsorbent dose (1–16 g/l), initial fluoride concentration (1–25 mg/l) and in the presence of different anions. Adsorption isotherms have been modeled using Freundlich, Langmuir and Dubinin–Raduskevich isotherms and adsorption followed Langmuir isotherm model. Kinetic studies revealed that the adsorption followed second-order rate kinetics. MCAA could remove fluoride effectively (up to 0.2 mg/l) at pH 7 in 3 h with 8 g/l adsorbent dose when 10 mg/l of fluoride was present in 50 ml of water. In the presence of other anions, the adsorption of fluoride was retared. The mechanism of fluoride uptake by MCAA is due to physical adsorption as well as through intraparticle diffusion which was confirmed by kinetics, Dubinin–Raduskevich isotherm, zeta-potential measurements and mapping studies of energy-dispersive analysis of X-ray.

The well known features of crack face interpenetration/contact at the tip of an interface crack is re-examined using finite element analysis and assuming material nonlinear properties for the adherends. It was assumed in literature that the crack tips are fully open at all load levels in the presence of material nonlinearity of the adherends. Analysis for the case of remote tension shows that even in the presence of material nonlinearity, crack tip closes at small load levels and opens above a certain load level. Mixed-mode fracture parameters are evaluated for the situation when the crack tips are fully open. Due to the presence of nonlinearity, the mixed-mode fracture parameters are measured with the symmetric and anti-symmetric components of J-integral. The present analysis explains the sequence of events at the interface crack tip with progressively increasing remote tension load for the case of adherends with material nonlinear behaviour.

This paper presents a novel RTK-based GNSS Lagrangian drifter system that is capable of monitoring water velocity, turbulence and dispersion coefficients of river and estuarine. The Lagrangian drifters use the dual-frequency real time kinematic (RTK) technique for both position and velocity estimations. The capsule is designed to meet the requirements such as minimizing height, diameter, minimizing the direct wind drag, positive buoyancy for satellite signal reception and stability, and waterproof housing for electronic components, such as GNSS receiver and computing board. The collected GNSS data are processed with post-processing RTK software. Several experiments have been carried out in two rivers in Brisbane and Sunshine Coast in Queensland. Results show that the high accuracy GNSS-drifters can be used to measure dispersion coefficient resulting from sub-tidal velocity fluctuations in shallow tidal water. In addition, the RTK-GNSS drifters respond well to vertical motion and thus could be applicable to flood monitoring.

Alum-impregnated activated alumina (AIAA) was investigated in the present work as an adsorbent for the removal of As(V) from water by batch mode. Adsorption study at different pH values shows that the efficiency of AIAA is much higher than as such activated alumina and is suitable for treatment of drinking water. The adsorption isotherm experiments indicated that the uptake of As(V) increased with increasing As(V) concentration from 1 to 25 mg/l and followed Langmuir-type adsorption isotherm. Speciation diagram shows that in the pH range of 2.8–11.5, arsenate predominantly exists as H2AsO4− and HAsO42− species and hence it is presumed that these are the major species being adsorbed on the surface of AIAA. Intraparticle diffusion and kinetic studies revealed that adsorption of As(V) was due to physical adsorption as well as through intraparticle diffusion. Effect of interfering ions revealed that As(V) sorption is strongly influenced by the presence of phosphate ion. The presence of arsenic on AIAA is depicted from zeta potential measurement, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive analysis of X-ray (EDAX) mapping study. Alum-impregnated activated alumina successfully removed As(V) to below 40 ppb (within the permissible limit set by WHO) from water, when the initial concentration of As(V) is 10 mg/l.

Nucleation is the first step in the formation of a new phase inside a mother phase. Two main forms of nucleation can be distinguished. In homogeneous nucleation, the new phase is formed in a uniform substance. In heterogeneous nucleation, on the other hand, the new phase emerges on a pre-existing surface (nucleation site). Nucleation is the source of about 30% of all atmospheric aerosol which in turn has noticeable health effects and a significant impact on climate. Nucleation can be observed in the atmosphere, studied experimentally in the laboratory and is the subject of ongoing theoretical research. This thesis attempts to be a link between experiment and theory. By comparing simulation results to experimental data, the aim is to (i) better understand the experiments and (ii) determine where the theory needs improvement. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools were used to simulate homogeneous onecomponent nucleation of n-alcohols in argon and helium as carrier gases, homogeneous nucleation in the water-sulfuric acid-system, and heterogeneous nucleation of water vapor on silver particles. In the nucleation of n-alcohols, vapor depletion, carrier gas effect and carrier gas pressure effect were evaluated, with a special focus on the pressure effect whose dependence on vapor and carrier gas properties could be specified. The investigation of nucleation in the water-sulfuric acid-system included a thorough analysis of the experimental setup, determining flow conditions, vapor losses, and nucleation zone. Experimental nucleation rates were compared to various theoretical approaches. We found that none of the considered theoretical descriptions of nucleation captured the role of water in the process at all relative humidities. Heterogeneous nucleation was studied in the activation of silver particles in a TSI 3785 particle counter which uses water as its working fluid. The role of the contact angle was investigated and the influence of incoming particle concentrations and homogeneous nucleation on counting efficiency determined.

Aeration experiments were conducted in different sized baffled and unbaffled circular surface aeration tanks to study their relative performance on oxygen transfer process while aerating the same volume of water. Experiments were carried out with the objective of ascertaining the effect of baffle on oxygen transfer coefficient k. Simulation equations govern the oxygen transfer coefficient with the theoretical power per unit volume, X and actual power per unit volume, P-V. It has been found that, for any given X, circular tanks with baffle produce higher values of k than unbaffled circular tanks, but in terms of actual power consumption unbaffled tanks consume less power when compared to baffled circular tanks to achieve the same value of k. It has been found that in terms of energy consumption, epsilon, baffled tanks consume more energy than unbaffled tanks at any value of X. This suggests that the unbaffled circular tank gives a better performance as far as energy consumption is concerned and hence better economy. An example illustrating the energy conservation to aerate the same volume of water in both types of aerators is given. (c) 2007 Society of Chemical Industry.

By using the axisymmetric finite elements static limit analysis formulation, proposed recently by the authors, the stability numbers (gamma H/c(o)) for an unsupported vertical circular excavation in clays, whose cohesion increases with depth, have been determined under undrained condition; gamma = unit weight, H., height of the excavation and c(o) = cohesion along ground surface. The results are obtained for various values of H/b and m; where b = the radius of the excavation and m = a non-dimensional parameter which accounts for the rate of the increase of cohesion with depth. The values of the stability numbers increase continuously both with increases in H/b and m. The results obtained in this study compare well with those available in literature.(C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. The change in extension-twist Coupling due to delamination in antisymmetric laminates is experimentally measured. Experimental results are compared with the results from analytical expression existing in literature and finite element analysis. The application of the Macro-Fiber Composite (MFC) developed at the NASA Langley Research Center for sensing the delamination in the laminates is investigated. While many applications have been reported in the literature using the MFC as an actuator, here its use as a twist sensor has been studied. The real-life application envisaged is structural health monitoring of laminated composite flexbeams taking advantage of the symmetry in the structure. Apart from the defect detection under symmetric conditions, other methods of health monitoring for the same structure are reported for further validation. Results show that MFC works well as a sensor.

Data on pressure drop and heat transfer to aqueous solutions of glycerol flowing in different types of coiled pipes are presented for laminar flow in the range of NRe from 80 to 6000. An empirical correlation is set up which can account the present data as well as the data available in literature within ±10 per cent deviation. Conventional momentum and heat transfer analogy equation is used to analyse the present data.

During active growth of Escherichia coli, majority of the transcriptional activity is carried out by the housekeeping sigma factor (Sigma 70), whose association with core RNAP is generally favoured because of its higher intracellular level and higher affinity to core RNAP. In order to facilitate transcription by alternative sigma factors during nutrient starvation, the bacterial cell uses multiple strategies by which the transcriptional ability of Sigma 70 is diminished in a reversible manner. The facilitators of shifting the balance in favour of alternative sigma factors happen to be as diverse as a small molecule (p)ppGpp (represents ppGpp or pppGpp), proteins (DksA, Rsd) and a species of RNA (6S RNA). Although 6S RNA and (p)ppGpp were known in literature for a long time, their role in transcriptional switching has been understood only in recent years. With themelucidation of function of DksA, a new dimension has been added to the phenomenon of stringent response. As the final outcome of actions of (p)ppGpp, DksA, 6S RNA and Rsd is similar, there is a need to analyse hese mechanisms in a collective manner. We review the recent trends in understanding the regulation of Sigma 70 by (p)ppGpp, DksA, Rsd and 6S RNA and present a case for evolving a unified model of RNAP redistribution during starvation by modulation of Sigma 70 activity in E. coli.

A method for total risk analysis of embankment dams under earthquake conditions is discussed and applied to the selected embankment dams, i.e., Chang, Tapar, Rudramata, and Kaswati located in the Kachchh region of Gujarat, India, to obtain the seismic hazard rating of the dam site and the risk rating of the structures. Based on the results of the total risk analysis of the dams, coupled non-linear dynamic numerical analyses of the dam sections are performed using acceleration time history record of the Bhuj (India) earthquake as well as five other major earthquakes recorded worldwide. The objective of doing so is to perform the numerical analysis of the dams for the range of amplitude, frequency content and time duration of input motions. The deformations calculated from the numerical analyses are also compared with other approaches available in literature, viz, Makdisi and Seed (1978) approach, Jansen's approach (1990), Swaisgood's method (1995), Bureau's method (1997). Singh et al. approach (2007), and Saygili and Rathje approach (2008) and the results are utilized to foresee the stability of dams in future earthquake scenario. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Experiments and computer simulation studies have revealed existence of rich dynamics in the orientational relaxation of molecules in confined systems such as water in reverse micelles, cyclodextrin cavities, and nanotubes. Here we introduce a novel finite length one dimensional Ising model to investigate the propagation and the annihilation of dynamical correlations in finite systems and to understand the intriguing shortening of the orientational relaxation time that has been reported for small sized reverse micelles. In our finite sized model, the two spins at the two end cells are oriented in the opposite directions to mimic the effects of surface that in real system fixes water orientation in the opposite directions. This produces opposite polarizations to propagate inside from the surface and to produce bulklike condition at the center. This model can be solved analytically for short chains. For long chains, we solve the model numerically with Glauber spin flip dynamics (and also with Metropolis single-spin flip Monte Carlo algorithm). We show that model nicely reproduces many of the features observed in experiments. Due to the destructive interference among correlations that propagate from the surface to the core, one of the rotational relaxation time components decays faster than the bulk. In general, the relaxation of spins is nonexponential due to the interplay between various interactions. In the limit of strong coupling between the spins or in the limit of low temperature, the nature of relaxation of the spins undergoes a qualitative change with the emergence of a homogeneous dynamics where decay is predominantly exponential, again in agreement with experiments. A simple n-state configurational excitation model which takes into account the presence of weakly connected pentamer units in liquid water is proposed. The model has features of both the “continuum” and “mixture” models. Calculations based on this model satisfactorily account for the important, diagnostic thermodynamic properties of water such as the density maximum, fraction of monomers and so on.

For resonant column tests conducted in the flexure mode of excitation, a new methodology has been proposed to find the elastic modulus and associated axial strain of a cylindrical sample. The proposed method is an improvement over the existing one, and it does not require the assumption of either the mode shape or zero bending moment condition at the top of the sample. A stepwise procedure is given to perform the necessary calculations. From a number of resonant column experiments on aluminum bars and dry sand samples, it has been observed that the present method as compared with the one available in literature provides approximately (i) 5.9%-7.3% higher values of the elastic modulus and (ii) 6.5%-7.3% higher values of the associated axial strains.
