---ABSTRACT---Bacterial colonies are dynamical systems difficult to model because bacteria collaborate and exchange information with each other. These prokaryotic organisms can make decisions by majority and exchange important genetic information, for example, make them resistant to an antibiotic. The conjugation process is the exchange of a plasmid from one bacterium to another, allowing both to have the same properties. Recent studies have shown that these plasmids can be artificially reprogrammed to make the bacteria that contain it to perform a specific function [1]. Among the multitude of applications involved in this idea, the European project PLASWIRES is attempting to prove that it is possible to use living organisms as parallel and distributed computers with plasmids acting as connectors between them through conjugation. Thus, by properly programming a plasmid, you can get a colony of bacteria that work as an antibiotic or detect hazardous plasmids in virulent bacteria. The experimental process to prove this idea can be slow and tedious, so the use of simulators to predict their behavior is required. Since PLASWIRES project is based on bacterial conjugation, a simulator that can reproduce this operation is required. This work arises due to the absence of the conjugation process in the simulator GRO. This document details the changes made to GRO to represent this process, analyze the data and try to adjust the model to the data obtained by the Institute of Biomedicine and Biotechnology of Cantabria ( IBBTEC ). This project has two main objectives, the first is to add the functionality of intercellular communication by conjugation to the simulator GRO, and the second is to use the experimental data obtained by the IBBTEC. To do this, the following points should be followed: • Study of conjugation biology as a mechanism of intercellular communication. • Design and implementation of the algorithm that simulates conjugation. • Experimental validation and model adjust to the experimental data on rates of conjugation and bacterial growth.

ABSTRACT. Study about production-planning model of extraction and production cities of the former Soviet Union –resulted of the economic centralized system- and their present consequences resulting of a lack of environmental policy. It focuses on the extractive city: Neft Daşhları, its collapse and the entire energy landscape constitutes The Abşheron Peninsula.

The life-history strategies of organisms are sculpted over evolutionary time by the relative prospects of present and future reproductive success. As a consequence, animals of many species show flexible behavioral responses to environmental and social change. Here we show that disruption of the habitat of a colony of African cichlid fish, Haplochromis burtoni (Günther) caused males to switch social status more frequently than animals kept in a stable environment. H. burtoni males can be either reproductively active, guarding a territory, or reproductively inactive (nonterritorial). Although on average 25–50% of the males are territorial in both the stable and unstable environments, during the 20-week study, nearly two-thirds of the animals became territorial for at least 1 week. Moreover, many fish changed social status several times. Surprisingly, the induced changes in social status caused changes in somatic growth. Nonterritorial males and animals ascending in social rank showed an increased growth rate whereas territorial males and animals descending in social rank slowed their growth rate or even shrank. Similar behavioral and physiological changes are caused by social change in animals kept in stable environmental conditions, although at a lower rate. This suggests that differential growth, in interaction with environmental conditions, is a central mechanism underlying the changes in social status. Such reversible phenotypic plasticity in a crucial life-history trait may have evolved to enable animals to shift resources from reproduction to growth or vice versa, depending on present and future reproductive prospects.

Although initially conceived as providing simply the preventive portion of an extended continuum of care for veterans, the Driving Under the Influence (DUI) program has turned out to be an important outreach service for active duty or recently discharged OEF/OIF (Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom) veterans. Veterans receive empirically-based, state-mandated education and therapy under the only Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) - sponsored DUI program in the State of Colorado, with the advantage of having providers who are sensitive to symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other relevant diagnoses specific to this population, including Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). In this paper, the rapid growth of this program is described, as well as summary data regarding the completion, discontinuation, and augmentation of services from the original referral concern. Key results indicated that for nearly one third (31.9%) of the OEF/OIF veterans who were enrolled in the DUI program, this was their initial contact with the VA health care system. Furthermore, following their enrollment in the DUI program, more than one fourth (27.6%) were later referred to and attended other VA programs including PTSD rehabilitation and group therapy, anger management, and intensive inpatient or outpatient dual diagnosis programs. These and other findings from this study suggest that the DUI program may be an effective additional pathway for providing treatment that is particularly salient to the distinctive OEF/OIF population; one that may also result in earlier intervention for problem drinking and other problems related to combat. Relevant conclusions discussed herein primarily aim to improve providers' understanding of effective outreach, and to enhance the appropriate linkages between OEF/OIF veterans and existing VA services.

As the population of Colorado continues to grow, the impacts from individual sewage disposal systems, or onsite wastewater systems (OWS), are becoming more apparent. Increased use of OWS impacts not only water quality but land use and development as well. These impacts have led to the need for a new generation of wastewater regulations in the state, a transition from the historic prescriptive requirements to a more progressive, performance-based system. A performance-based system will allow smarter growth, improved water quality, and cost savings for both the regulatory agencies and the OWS industry in Colorado. This project outlines the challenges and essential elements required to make this transition, and provides guidance on how to meet the challenges and overcome barriers to implementing a performance code in Colorado.
