Nuclear lamina in an eukaryotic cell is primarily composed of the lamins A, B and C. The A type lamins are found only in differentiated cell types while the B type lamins are present both in differentiated and undifferentiated cells. Lamin B interacts with the inner nuclear membrane, In recent years there have been extensive studies on the relationship between the dynamic state of lamin B and the nuclear envelope integrity with respect to the fate of a particular cell, In this article, we have analysed the recent developments and have considered the sequence of events that might be contributing to the fate of a cell either to undergo normal cell division or uncontrolled cellular proliferation or apoptosis.

For d >= 2, Walkup's class K (d) consists of the d-dimensional simplicial complexes all whose vertex-links are stacked (d - 1)-spheres. Kalai showed that for d >= 4, all connected members of K (d) are obtained from stacked d-spheres by finitely many elementary handle additions. According to a result of Walkup, the face vector of any triangulated 4-manifold X with Euler characteristic chi satisfies f(1) >= 5f(0) - 15/2 chi, with equality only for X is an element of K(4). Kuhnel observed that this implies f(0)(f(0) - 11) >= -15 chi, with equality only for 2-neighborly members of K(4). Kuhnel also asked if there is a triangulated 4-manifold with f(0) = 15, chi = -4 (attaining equality in his lower bound). In this paper, guided by Kalai's theorem, we show that indeed there is such a triangulation. It triangulates the connected sum of three copies of the twisted sphere product S-3 (sic) S-1. Because of Kuhnel's inequality, the given triangulation of this manifold is a vertex-minimal triangulation. By a recent result of Effenberger, the triangulation constructed here is tight. Apart from the neighborly 2-manifolds and the infinite family of (2d + 3)-vertex sphere products Sd-1 X S-1 (twisted for d odd), only fourteen tight triangulated manifolds were known so far. The present construction yields a new member of this sporadic family. We also present a self-contained proof of Kalai's result. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Levamisole, the imidazo2,1-b]thiazole derivative has been reported as a potential antitumor agent. In the present study, we synthesized, characterized and evaluated biological activity of its novel analogues with substitution in the aralkyl group and on imidazothiadiazole molecules with same chemical backbone but different side chains namely 2-aralkyl-6-(4'-fluorophenyl)-imidazo2,1-b]1,3,4]thiadiazoles (SCR1), 2-aralkyl-5-bromo-6-(4'-fluorophenyl)-imidazo2,1-b]1,3,4]-thiadiaz oles (SCR2), 2-aralkyl-5-formyl-6-(4'-fluorophenyl)-imidazo2,1-b]1,3,4]-thiadia zoles (SCR3) and 2-aralkyl-5-thiocyanato-6-(4'-fluorophenyl)-imidazo2,1-b]1,3,4]-th iadiazoles (SCR4) on leukemia cells. The cytotoxic studies showed that 3a, 4a, and 4c exhibited strong cytotoxicity while others had moderate cytotoxicity. Among these we chose 4a (IC50, 8 mu M) for understanding its mechanism of cytotoxicity. FACS analysis in conjunction with mitochondrial membrane potential and DNA fragmentation studies indicated that 4a induced apoptosis without cell cycle arrest suggesting that it could be used as a potential chemotherapeutic agent. We present experimental x-ray-absorption spectra at the oxygen and 3d transition-metal K edges of LaFeO3 and LaCoO3. We interpret the experimental results in terms of detailed theoretical calculations based on multiple-scattering theory. Along with providing an understanding of the origin of various experimental features, we investigate the effects of structural distortions and the core-hole potential in determining the experimental spectral shape. The results indicate that the core-hole potential as well as many-body effects within the valence electrons do not have any strong effect on the spectra suggesting that the spectral features can be directly interpreted in terms of the electronic structure of such compounds.

Quinones play a vital role in the process of electron transfer in bacterial photosynthetic reaction centers. It is of interest to investigate the photochemical reactions involving quinones with a view to elucidating the structure-function relationships in the biological processes. Resonance Raman spectra of radical anions and the time-resolved resonance Raman spectra of vitamin K-1 (model compound for Q(A) in Rhodopseudomonas viridis, a bacterial photosynthetic reception center) are presented. The photochemical intermediates of vitamin K-1, viz. radical anion, ketyl radical and o-quinone methide have been identified. The vibrational assignments of all these intermediates are made on the basis of comparison with our earlier TR3 studies on radical anions of naphthoquinone and menaquinone. A chimeric channel, 4N/1, was generated from two outwardly rectifying K+ channels by linking the N-terminal cytoplasmic domain of hKv1.4 (N terminus ball and chain of hKv1.4) with the transmembrane body of hKvl.l (Delta 78N1 construct of hKvl.l). The recombinant channel has properties similar to the six transmembrane inward rectifiers and opens on hyperpolarization with a threshold of activation at -90 mV. Outward currents are seen on depolarization provided the channel is first exposed to a hyperpolarizing pulse of -100mV or more. Hyperpolarization at and beyond -130mV provides evidence of channel deactivation. Delta 78N1 does not show inward currents on hyperpolarization but does open on depolarizing from -80mV with characteristics similar to native hKvl.l. The outward currents seen in both Delta 78N1 and 4N/1 inactivate slowly at rates consistent with C-type inactivation. The inward rectification of the 4N/1 chimera is consistent with the inactivation gating mechanism. This implies that the addition of the N-terminus from hKv1.4 to hKvl.l shifts channel activation to hyperpolarizing potentials. These results suggest a mechanism involving the N-terminal cytoplasmic domain for conversion of outward rectifiers to inward rectifiers. (C) 1999 Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.

A copper(II) complex containing a NSO-donor Schiff base and NN-donor 2,2'-bipyridine has been prepared and structurally characterized. The square pyramidal complex with an axial sulfur ligation is a structural model for the CUB site of dopamine-hydroxylase in its oxidized form. The copper(II) complex is catalytically active in the oxidation of ascorbic acid by dioxygen mediated by a copper(I) species which is proposed to have a four-coordinate structure with a N3S coordination geometry.

We have analyzed the stability of various oxides of K and find that K(2)O(2) is the most stable one. The additional stability is traced to the presence of oxygen dimers in K(2)O(2) which interact to form molecular orbitals. Other oxides such as KO(2) and KO(3) which also have dimers/trimers of oxygens are found to be less stable. This is traced to the shorter O-O bonds that one finds in them which gives rise to a significant coulomb repulsion between the electrons on the oxygen atoms making up the dimer/trimer, making them less stable.

Large single crystal of triglycine sulphate (dimension 100 mm along monoclinic b-axis and 15 mm in diameter) was grown using the unidirectional solution growth technique. The X-ray diffraction studies confirmed the growth/long axis to be b-axis (polar axis). The dielectric studies were carried out at various temperatures to establish the phase transition temperature. The frequency response of the dielectric constant, dielectric loss and impedance of the crystal along the growth axis, was monitored. These are typically characterized by strong resonance peaks in the kHz region. The piezoelectric coefficients like stiffness constant (C), elastic coefficient (S), electromechanical coupling coefficient (k) and d (31) were calculated using the resonance-antiresonance method. Polarization (P)-Electric field (E) hysteresis loops were recorded at various temperatures to find the temperature-dependent spontaneous polarization of the grown crystal. The pyroelectric coefficients were determined from the pyroelectric current measurement by the Byer and Roundy method. The ferroelectric domain patterns were recorded on (010) plane using scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy.

The oxygen content of liquid Ni-Mn alloy equilibrated with spinel solid solution, (Ni,Mn)O. (1 +x)A12O3, and α-Al2O3 has been measured by suction sampling and inert gas fusion analysis. The corresponding oxygen potential of the three-phase system has been determined with a solid state cell incorporating (Y2O3)ThO2 as the solid electrolyte and Cr + Cr2O3 as the reference electrode. The equilibrium composition of the spinel phase formed at the interface of the alloy and alumina crucible was obtained using EPMA. The experimental data are compared with a thermodynamic model based on the free energies of formation of end-member spinels, free energy of solution of oxygen in liquid nickel, interaction parameters, and the activities in liquid Ni-Mn alloy and spinel solid solution. Mixing properties of the spinel solid solution are derived from a cation distribution model. The computational results agree with the experimental data on oxygen concentration, potential, and composition of the spinel phase.

Gd1.95Eu0.4M0.01O3 (M = Li+ Na+ K+) nanophosphors have been synthesized by a low temperature solution combustion (LSC) method. Powder X-ray diffraction pattern (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-vis and photoluminescence (PL) measurements were carried out to characterize their structural and luminescent properties. The excitation and emission spectra indicated that the phosphor could be well excited by UV light (243 nm) and emit red light about 612 nm. The effect of alkali co-dopant on PL properties has been examined. The results showed that incorporation of Li+, Na+ and K+ in to Gd2O3:Eu3+ phosphor would lead to a remarkable increase of photoluminescence. The PL intensity of Gd2O3:Eu3+ phosphor was improved evidently by co-doping with Li+ ions whose radius is less than that of Gd3+ and hardly with Na+, K+ whose radius is larger than that of Gd3+. The effect of co-dopants on enhanced luminescence was mainly regarded as the result of a suitable local distortion of crystal field surrounding the Eu3+ activator. These results will play an important role in seeking some more effective co-dopants. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier B.V.

The anatase phase of titania (TiO2) nano-photocatalysts was prepared using a modified sol gel process and thereafter embedded on carbon-covered alumina supports. The carbon-covered alumina (CCA) supports were prepared via the adsorption of toluene 2,4-diisocyanate (TDI) on the surface of the alumina. TDI was used as the carbon source for the first time for the carbon-covered alumina support system. The adsorption of TDI on alumina is irreversible; hence, the resulting organic moiety can undergo pyrolysis at high temperatures resulting in the formation of a carbon coating on the surface of the alumina. The TiO2 catalysts were impregnated on the CCA supports. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the carbon deposited on the alumina was not crystalline and also showed the successful impregnation of TiO2 on the CCA supports. In the Raman spectra, it could be deduced that the carbon was rather a conjugated olefinic or polycyclic hydrocarbons which can be considered as molecular units of a graphitic plane. The Raman analysis of the catalysed CCAs showed the presence of both the anatase titania and D and G band associated with the carbon of the CCAs. The scanning electron microscope micrographs indicated that the alumina was coated by a carbon layer and the energy dispersive X-ray spectra showed the presence of Al, O and C in the CCA samples, with the addition of Ti for the catalyst impregnated supports. The Brunauer Emmet and Teller surface area analysis showed that the incorporating of carbon on the alumina surface resulted in an increase in surface area, while the impregnation with TiO2 resulted in a further increase in surface area. However, a decrease in the pore volume and diameter was observed. The photocatalytic activity of the nanocatalysts was studied for the degradation of Rhodamine B dye. The CCA-TiO2 nanocatalysts were found to be more photocatalytically active under both visible and UV light irradiation compared to the free TIO2 nanocatalysts.

Metal-ion- (Ag, Co, Ni and Pd) doped titania nanocatalysts were successfully deposited on glass slides by layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly technique using a poly(styrene sulfonate sodium salt) (PSS) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) polyelectrolyte system. Solid diffuse reflectance (SDR) studies showed a linear increase in absorbance at 416 nm with increase in the number of m-TiO2 thin films. The LbL assembled thin films were tested for their photocatalytic activity through the degradation of Rhodamine B under visible-light illumination. From the scanning electron microscope (SEM), the thin films had a porous morphology and the atomic force microscope (AFM) studies showed ``rough'' surfaces. The porous and rough surface morphology resulted in high surface areas hence the high photocatalytic degradation (up to 97% over a 6.5 h irradiation period) using visible-light observed. Increasing the number of multilayers deposited on the glass slides resulted in increased film thickness and an increased rate of photodegradation due to increase in the availability of more nanocatalysts (more sites for photodegradation). The LbL assembled thin films had strong adhesion properties which made them highly stable thus displaying the same efficiencies after five (5) reusability cycles.
