The general structure of the Hamiltonian hierarchy of the pseudo-Coulomb and pseudo-Harmonic potentials is constructed by the factorization method within the supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SQMS) formalism. The excited states and spectra of eigenfunctions of the potentials are obtained through the generation of the members of the hierarchy. It is shown that the extra centrifugal term added to the Coulomb and Harmonic potentials maintain their exact solvability.

The reduction of phenyl benzoates with nitro substituents at the 2-,3- and 4-positions of the benzoates in N,N-dimethylformamide is reported. The phenyl 4- and 3-nitrobenzoate are reduced in two cathodic steps. The first one, at about -0.9 V vs. SCE, a reversible one-electron process, gives a rather stable anion radical. The second reduction step at potentials between -1.5 and -2.0 V vs. SCE leads to formation of the dianion, which decomposes giving free phenol in good yields (> 80%). on the other hand, the phenyl 2-nitrobenzoate is reduced in one cathodic step. This step occurs at -0.9 V with formation of an unstable anion radical which decomposes via C-O bond cleavage, giving phenol with a yield of ca. 80%. The mechanisms of the reduction of these compounds are discussed. (C) 1997 Elsevier B.V. S.A.

We propose general three-dimensional potentials in rotational and cylindrical parabolic coordinates which are generated by direct products of the SO(2, 1) dynamical group. Then we construct their Green functions algebraically and find their spectra. Particular cases of these potentials which appear in the literature are also briefly discussed.

Exact reflection and transmission coefficients for supersymmetric shape-invariant potentials barriers are calculated by an analytical continuation of the asymptotic wavefunctions obtained via the introduction of new generalized ladder operators. The general form of the wavefunction is obtained by the use of the F(-infinity, +infinity)-matrix formalism of Froman and Froman which is related to the evolution of asymptotic wavefunction coefficients.

The initiation of glycogen synthesis requires the protein glycogenin, which incorporates glucose residues through a self-glucosylation reaction, and then acts as substrate for chain elongation by glycogen synthase and branching enzyme. Numerous sequences of glycogenin-like proteins are available in the databases but the enzymes from mammalian skeletal muscle and from Saccharomyces cerevisiae are the best characterized. We report the isolation of a cDNA from the fungus Neurospora crassa, which encodes a protein, GNN, which has properties characteristic of glycogenin. The protein is one of the largest glycogenins but shares several conserved domains common to other family members. Recombinant GNN produced in Escherichia coli was able to incorporate glucose in a self-glucosylation reaction, to trans-glucosylate exogenous substrates, and to act as substrate for chain elongation by glycogen synthase. Recombinant protein was sensitive to C-terminal proteolysis, leading to stable species of around 31 kDa, which maintained all functional properties. The role of GNN as an initiator of glycogen metabolism was confirmed by its ability to complement the glycogen deficiency of a S. cerevisiae strain (glg1 glg2) lacking glycogenin and unable to accumulate glycogen. Disruption of the gnn gene of N. crassa by repeat induced point mutation (RIP) resulted in a strain that was unable to synthesize glycogen, even though the glycogen synthase activity was unchanged. Northern blot analysis showed that the gnn gene was induced during vegetative growth and was repressed upon carbon starvation. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

It is shown that for singular potentials of the form lambda/r(alpha),the asymptotic form of the wave function both at r --> infinity and r --> 0 plays an important role. Using a wave function having the correct asymptotic behavior for the potential lambda/r(4), it is, shown that it gives the exact ground-state energy for this potential when lambda --> 0, as given earlier by Harrell [Ann. Phys. (NY) 105, 379 (1977)]. For other values of the coupling parameter X, a trial basis;set of wave functions which also satisfy the correct boundary conditions at r --> infinity and r --> 0 are used to find the ground-state energy of the singular potential lambda/r(4) It is shown that the obtained eigenvalues are in excellent agreement with their exact ones for a very large range of lambda values.

A decomposition of identity is given as a complex integral over the coherent states associated with a class of shape-invariant self-similar potentials. There is a remarkable connection between these coherent states and Ramanujan's integral extension of the beta function.

The influence of potential on electrochemical behavior of Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy under simulate physiological conditions was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The experimental results were compared with those obtained by potentiodynamic polarization curves. All measurements were carried out in Hank's aerated solution at 25degreesC, at pH 7.8 and at different potentials (corrosion potential, 0 mV(SCE), 1000 mV(SCE), and 2000 mV(SCE)). The EIS spectra exhibited a two-step or a two-time constant system, suggesting the formation of a two-layer oxide film on the metal surface. The high corrosion resistance, displayed by this alloy in electrochemical polarization tests, is due to the dense inner layer, while its osseointegration ability can be ascribed to the presence of the outer porous layer. The Pt-Ir microelectrode modified through one step, electropolymerization is proposed for the isocitrate amperometric biosensor construction. The enzyme (isocitrate dehydrogenase-ICDH), coenzyme (NADP(+)) and mediator (Meldola's Blue) were immobilized onto the microelectrode surface in one step from a PIPES buffer solution containing pyrrole. The optimized experimental conditions were 25 cycles of cyclic voltammetric in a solution containing 3.58 10(-5) mol l(-1) of mediator, 3.51 10(-4) mol l(-1) of coenzyme and 2.68 U ml(-1) of enzyme. In contrast to the biosensor for isocitrate reported in literature, just one enzyme was immobilized and no coenzyme addition in the solution of analysis was necessary. Catalytic currents were proportional to the isocitrate concentration between 7.7 10(-6) and 1.04 10(-4) mol l(-1), showing good repeatability. The detection limit of the proposed biosensor was 3.50 10(-6) mol l(-1), the response time was lower than 20 s, the lifetime was about 30 determinations and no significant interference of sugars and citric acid was verified. Orange juice samples were analysed by both methodology biosensor and spectrophotometric commercial kit, and the obtained results presented a good correlation. The data demonstrated that the developed biosensor is suitable for isocitrate determination in orange juice without matrix interferences. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The use of an effective surface charge density has allowed the Gouy-Chapman (CC) theory to explain surface potential isotherms of Langmuir monolayers of dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB). The effective surface charge density of DODAB monolayer increases with the electronegativity of the counterions in the subphase. The pressure-area isotherms indicate a very condensed monolayer for DODAB spread on an I--containing subphase, which exhibits the lowest surface charge density, whereas the monolayer on a F-containing subphase is extremely expanded owing to the high surface charge density or electrostatic repulsion between headgroups. This work is related with the proposition of a so-called regular or convex solver potential to be used in numerical simulations involving a certain class of constitutive elastic-damage models. All the mathematical aspects involved are based on convex analysis, which is employed aiming a consistent variational formulation of the potential and its conjugate one. It is shown that the constitutive relations for the class of damage models here considered can be derived from the solver potentials by means of sub-differentials sets. The optimality conditions of the resulting minimisation problem represent in particular a linear complementarity problem. Finally, a simple example is present in order to illustrate the possible integration errors that can be generated when finite step analysis is performed. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The Dirac equation is exactly solved for a pseudoscalar linear plus Coulomb-like potential in a two-dimensional world. This sort of potential gives rise to an effective quadratic plus inversely quadratic potential in a Sturm-Liouville problem, regardless the sign of the parameter of the linear potential, in sharp contrast with the Schrodinger case. The generalized Dirac oscillator already analyzed in a previous work is obtained as a particular case. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The correction procedure for Clarke's matrix, considering three-phase transmission line analyzes, is analyzed step by step in this paper, searching to improve the application of this procedure. Changing the eigenvectors as modal transformation matrices, Clarke's matrix has been applied to analyses for transposed and untransposed three-phase transmission line cases. It is based on the fact that Clarke's matrix is an eigenvector matrix for transposed three-phase transmission lines considering symmetrical and asymmetrical cases. Because of this, the application of this matrix has been analyzed considering untransposed three-phase transmission lines. In most of these cases, the errors related to the eigenvalues can be considered negligible. It is not true when it is analyzed the elements that are not in main diagonal of the quasi-mode matrix. This matrix is obtained from the application of Clarke's matrix. The quasi-mode matrix is correspondent to the eigenvalue matrix. Their off-diagonal elements represent couplings among the quasi-modes. So, the off-diagonal quasi-mode element relative values are not negligible when compared to the eigenvalues that correspond to the coupled quasi-modes. Minimizing these relative values, the correction procedure is analyzed in detail, checking some alternatives for the correction procedure application.

This note deals whith the problem of extrema which may occur in the step-response of a stable linear system with real zeros and poles. Some simple sufficients conditions and necessary conditions are presented for analyses when zeros located between the dominant and fastest pole does not cause extrema in the step-response. These conditions require knowledge of the pole-zero configuration of the corresponding transfer-function.
