Enzootic pneumonia (EP) caused by Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae has a significant economic impact on domestic pig production. A control program carried out from 1999 to 2003 successfully reduced disease occurrence in domestic pigs in Switzerland, but recurrent outbreaks suggested a potential role of free-ranging wild boar (Sus scrofa) as a source of re-infection. Since little is known on the epidemiology of EP in wild boar populations, our aims were: (1) to estimate the prevalence of M. hyopneumoniae infections in wild boar in Switzerland; (2) to identify risk factors for infection in wild boar; and (3) to assess whether infection in wild boar is associated with the same gross and microscopic lesions typical of EP in domestic pigs. Nasal swabs, bronchial swabs and lung samples were collected from 978 wild boar from five study areas in Switzerland between October 2011 and May 2013. Swabs were analyzed by qualitative real time PCR and a histopathological study was conducted on lung tissues. Risk factor analysis was performed using multivariable logistic regression modeling. Overall prevalence in nasal swabs was 26.2% (95% CI 23.3-29.3%) but significant geographical differences were observed. Wild boar density, occurrence of EP outbreaks in domestic pigs and young age were identified as risk factors for infection. There was a significant association between infection and lesions consistent with EP in domestic pigs. We have concluded that M. hyopneumoniae is widespread in the Swiss wild boar population, that the same risk factors for infection of domestic pigs also act as risk factors for infection of wild boar, and that infected wild boar develop lesions similar to those found in domestic pigs. However, based on our data and the outbreak pattern in domestic pigs, we propose that spillover from domestic pigs to wild boar is more likely than transmission from wild boar to pigs.

Few studies have investigated causal pathways linking psychosocial factors to each other and to screening mammography. Conflicting hypotheses exist in the theoretic literature regarding the role and importance of subjective norms, a person's perceived social pressure to perform the behavior and his/her motivation to comply. The Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) hypothesizes that subjective norms directly affect intention; while the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) hypothesizes that attitudes mediate the influence of subjective norms on stage of change. No one has examined which hypothesis best predicts the effect of subjective norms on mammography intention and stage of change. Two statistical methods are available for testing mediation, sequential regression analysis (SRA) and latent variable structural equation modeling (LVSEM); however, software to apply LVSEM to dichotomous variables like intention has only recently become available. No one has compared the methods to determine whether or not they yield similar results for dichotomous variables. ^ Study objectives were to: (1) determine whether the effect of subjective norms on mammography intention and stage of change are mediated by pros and cons; and (2) compare mediation results from the SRA and LVSEM approaches when the outcome is dichotomous. We conducted a secondary analysis of data from a national sample of women veterans enrolled in Project H.O.M.E. (H&barbelow;ealthy O&barbelow;utlook on the M&barbelow;ammography E&barbelow;xperience), a behavioral intervention trial. ^ Results showed that the TTM model described the causal pathways better than the TRA one; however, we found support for only one of the TTM causal mechanisms. Cons was the sole mediator. The mediated effect of subjective norms on intention and stage of change by cons was very small. These findings suggest that interventionists focus their efforts on reducing negative attitudes toward mammography when resources are limited. ^ Both the SRA and LVSEM methods provided evidence for complete mediation, and the direction, magnitude, and standard errors of the parameter estimates were very similar. Because SRA parameter estimates were not biased toward the null, we can probably assume negligible measurement error in the independent and mediator variables. Simulation studies are needed to further our understanding of how these two methods perform under different data conditions. ^

To study the fluid motion-vehicle dynamics interaction, a model of four, liquid filled two-axle container freight wagons was set up. The railway vehicle has been modelled as a multi-body system (MBS). To include fluid sloshing, an equivalent mechanical model has been developed and incorporated. The influence of several factors has been studied in computer simulations, such as track defects, curve negotiation, train velocity, wheel wear, liquid and solid wagonload, and container baffles. SIMPACK has been used for MBS analysis, and ANSYS for liquid sloshing modelling and equivalent mechanical systems validation. Acceleration and braking manoeuvres of the freight train set the liquid cargo into motion. This longitudinal sloshing motion of the fluid cargo inside the tanks initiated a swinging motion of some components of the coupling gear. The coupling gear consists of UIC standard traction hooks and coupling screws that are located between buffers. One of the coupling screws is placed in the traction hook of the opposite wagon thus joining the two wagons, whereas the unused coupling screw rests on a hanger. Simulation results showed that, for certain combinations of type of liquid, filling level and container dimensions, the liquid cargo could provoke an undesirable, although not hazardous, release of the unused coupling screw from its hanger. The coupling screw's release was especially obtained when a period of acceleration was followed by an abrupt braking manoeuvre at 1 m/s2. It was shown that a resonance effect between the liquid's oscillation and the coupling screw's rotary motion could be the reason for the coupling screw's undesired release. El objetivo de la presente tesis doctoral es el desarrollo e implementación de un sistema para mejorar la metodología de extracción de la información geométrica necesaria asociada a los procesos de documentación de entidades de interés patrimonial, a partir de la información proporcionada por el empleo de sensores láser, tanto aéreos como terrestres. Para ello, inicialmente se realiza una presentación y justificación de los antecedentes y la problemática en el registro de información geométrica para el patrimonio, detallando todos aquellos sistemas de registro y análisis de la información geométrica utilizados en la actualidad. Este análisis permitirá realizar la comparación con los sistemas de registro basados en técnicas láser, aportando sugerencias de utilización para cada caso concreto. Posteriormente, se detallan los sistemas de registro basados en técnicas láser, comenzando por los sensores aerotransportados y concluyendo con el análisis pormenorizado de los sensores terrestres, tanto en su aplicación en modo estático como móvil. Se exponen las características técnicas y funcionamiento de cada uno de ellos, así como los ámbitos de aplicación y productos generados. Se analizan las fuentes de error que determinan la precisión que puede alcanzar el sistema. Tras la exposición de las características de los sistemas LiDAR, se detallan los procesos a realizar con los datos extraídos para poder generar la información necesaria para los diferentes tipos de objetos analizados. En esta exposición, se hace hincapié en los posibles riesgos que pueden ocurrir en algunas fases delicadas y se analizarán los diferentes algoritmos de filtrado y clasificación de los puntos, fundamentales en el procesamiento de la información LiDAR. Seguidamente, se propone una alternativa para optimizar los modelos de procesamiento existentes, basándose en el desarrollo de algoritmos nuevos y herramientas informáticas que mejoran el rendimiento en la gestión de la información LiDAR. En la implementación, se han tenido en cuenta características y necesidades particulares de la documentación de entidades de interés patrimonial, así como los diferentes ámbitos de utilización del LiDAR, tanto aéreo como terrestre. El resultado es un organigrama de las tareas a realizar desde la nube de puntos LiDAR hasta el cálculo de los modelos digitales del terreno y de superficies. Para llevar a cabo esta propuesta, se han desarrollado hasta 19 algoritmos diferentes que comprenden implementaciones para el modelado en 2.5D y 3D, visualización, edición, filtrado y clasificación de datos LiDAR, incorporación de información de sensores pasivos y cálculo de mapas derivados, tanto raster como vectoriales, como pueden ser mapas de curvas de nivel y ortofotos. Finalmente, para dar validez y consistencia a los desarrollos propuestos, se han realizado ensayos en diferentes escenarios posibles en un proceso de documentación del patrimonio y que abarcan desde proyectos con sensores aerotransportados, proyectos con sensores terrestres estáticos a media y corta distancia, así como un proyecto con un sensor terrestre móvil. Estos ensayos han permitido definir los diferentes parámetros necesarios para el adecuado funcionamiento de los algoritmos propuestos. Asimismo, se han realizado pruebas objetivas expuestas por la ISPRS para la evaluación y comparación del funcionamiento de algoritmos de clasificación LiDAR. Estas pruebas han permitido extraer datos de rendimiento y efectividad del algoritmo de clasificación presentado, permitiendo su comparación con otros algoritmos de prestigio existentes. Los resultados obtenidos han constatado el funcionamiento satisfactorio de la herramienta. Esta tesis está enmarcada dentro del proyecto Consolider-Ingenio 2010: “Programa de investigación en tecnologías para la valoración y conservación del patrimonio cultural” (ref. CSD2007-00058) realizado por el Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas y la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. ABSTRACT: The goal of this thesis is the design, development and implementation of a system to improve the extraction of useful geometric information in Heritage documentation processes. This system is based on information provided by laser sensors, both aerial and terrestrial. Firstly, a presentation of recording geometric information for Heritage processes is done. Then, a justification of the background and problems is done too. Here, current systems for recording and analyzing the geometric information are studied. This analysis will perform the comparison with the laser system techniques, providing suggestions of use for each specific case. Next, recording systems based on laser techniques are detailed. This study starts with airborne sensors and ends with terrestrial ones, both in static and mobile application. The technical characteristics and operation of each of them are described, as well as the areas of application and generated products. Error sources are also analyzed in order to know the precision this technology can achieve. Following the presentation of the LiDAR system characteristics, the processes to generate the required information for different types of scanned objects are described; the emphasis is on the potential risks that some steps can produce. Moreover different filtering and classification algorithms are analyzed, because of their main role in LiDAR processing. Then, an alternative to optimize existing processing models is proposed. It is based on the development of new algorithms and tools that improve the performance in LiDAR data management. In this implementation, characteristics and needs of the documentation of Heritage entities have been taken into account. Besides, different areas of use of LiDAR are considered, both air and terrestrial. The result is a flowchart of tasks from the LiDAR point cloud to the calculation of digital terrain models and digital surface models. Up to 19 different algorithms have been developed to implement this proposal. These algorithms include implementations for 2.5D and 3D modeling, viewing, editing, filtering and classification of LiDAR data, incorporating information from passive sensors and calculation of derived maps, both raster and vector, such as contour maps and orthophotos. Finally, in order to validate and give consistency to the proposed developments, tests in different cases have been executed. These tests have been selected to cover different possible scenarios in the Heritage documentation process. They include from projects with airborne sensors, static terrestrial sensors (medium and short distances) to mobile terrestrial sensor projects. These tests have helped to define the different parameters necessary for the appropriate functioning of the proposed algorithms. Furthermore, proposed tests from ISPRS have been tested. These tests have allowed evaluating the LiDAR classification algorithm performance and comparing it to others. Therefore, they have made feasible to obtain performance data and effectiveness of the developed classification algorithm. The results have confirmed the reliability of the tool. This investigation is framed within Consolider-Ingenio 2010 project titled “Programa de investigación en tecnologías para la valoración y conservación del patrimonio cultural” (ref. CSD2007-00058) by Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas and Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.

Best estimate analysis of rod ejection transients requires 3D kinetics core simulators. If they use cross sections libraries compiled in multidimensional tables,interpolation errors – originated when the core simulator computes the cross sections from the table values – are a source of uncertainty in k-effective calculations that should be accounted for. Those errors depend on the grid covering the domain of state variables and can be easily reduced, in contrast with other sources of uncertainties such as the ones due to nuclear data, by choosing an optimized grid distribution. The present paper assesses the impact of the grid structure on a PWR rod ejection transient analysis using the coupled neutron-kinetics/thermal-hydraulicsCOBAYA3/COBRA-TF system. Forthispurpose, the OECD/NEA PWR MOX/UO2 core transient benchmark has been chosen, as material compositions and geometries are available, allowing the use of lattice codes to generate libraries with different grid structures. Since a complete nodal cross-section library is also provided as part of the benchmark specifications, the effects of the library generation on transient behavior are also analyzed.Results showed large discrepancies when using the benchmark library and own-generated libraries when compared with benchmark participants’ solutions. The origin of the discrepancies was found to lie in the nodal cross sections provided in the benchmark.

The literature states that project duration is affected by various scope factors. Using 168 building projects carried out in Spain, this paper uses the multiple regression analysis to develop a forecast model that allows estimating project duration of new builds. The proposed model uses project type, gross floor area (GFA), the cost/GFA relationship and number of floors as predictor variables. The research identified the logarithmic form of construction speed as the most appropriate response variable. GFA has greater influence than cost on project duration but both factors are necessary to achieve a forecast model with the highest accuracy. We developed an analysis to verify the stability of forecasted values and showed how a model with high values of fit and accuracy may display an anomalous behavior in the forecasted values. The sensitivity of the proposed forecast model was also analyzed versus the variability of construction costs.

Modeling natural phenomena from 3D information enhances our understanding of the environment. Dense 3D point clouds are increasingly used as highly detailed input datasets. In addition to the capturing techniques of point clouds with LiDAR, low-cost sensors have been released in the last few years providing access to new research fields and facilitating 3D data acquisition for a broader range of applications. This letter presents an analysis of different speleothem features using 3D point clouds acquired with the gaming device Microsoft® Kinect. We compare the Kinect sensor with terrestrial LiDAR reference measurements using the KinFu pipeline for capturing complete 3D objects (< 4m**3). The results demonstrate the suitability of the Kinect to capture flowstone walls and to derive morphometric parameters of cave features. Although the chosen capturing strategy (KinFu) reveals a high correlation (R2=0.92) of stalagmite morphometry along the vertical object axis, a systematic overestimation (22% for radii and 44% for volume) is found. The comparison of flowstone wall datasets predominantly shows low differences (mean of 1 mm with 7 mm standard deviation) of the order of the Kinect depth precision. For both objects the major differences occur at strongly varying and curved surface structures (e.g. with fine concave parts).

A plethora of process modeling techniques has been proposed over the years. One way of evaluating and comparing the scope and completeness of techniques is by way of representational analysis. The purpose of this paper is to examine how process modeling techniques have developed over the last four decades. The basis of the comparison is the Bunge-Wand-Weber representation model, a benchmark used for the analysis of grammars that purport to model the real world and the interactions within it. This paper presents a comparison of representational analyses of several popular process modeling techniques and has two main outcomes. First, it provides insights, within the boundaries of a representational analysis, into the extent to which process modeling techniques have developed over time. Second, the findings also indicate areas in which the underlying theory seems to be over-engineered or lacking in specialization.

John Bowlby's use of evolutionary theory as a cornerstone of his attachment theory was innovative in its day and remains useful. Del Giudice's target article extends Belsky et al.'s and Chisholm's efforts to integrate attachment theory with more current thinking about evolution, ecology, and neuroscience. His analysis would be strengthened by (1) using computer simulation to clarify and simulate the effects of early environmental stress, (2) incorporating information about non-stress related sources of individual differences, (3) considering the possibility of adaptive behavior without specific evolutionary adaptations, and (4) considering whether the attachment construct is critical to his analysis.

In an Arab oil producing country in the Middle East such as Kuwait, Oil industry is considered as the main and most important industry of the country. This industry’s importance emerged from the significant role it plays in both country’s national economy and also global economy. Moreover, Oil industry’s criticality comes from its interconnectivity with national security and power in the Middle East region. Hence, conducting this research in this crucial industry had certainly added values to companies in this industry as it investigated thoroughly the main components of the TQM implementation process and identified which components affects significantly TQM’s implementation and its gained business results. In addition, as the Oil sector is a large sector that is known for its richness of employees with different national cultures and backgrounds. Thus, this culture-heterogeneous industry seems to be the most appropriate environment to address and satisfy a need in the literature to investigate the national culture values’ effects on TQM implementation process. Furthermore, this research has developed a new conceptual model of TQM implementation process in the Kuwaiti Oil industry that applies in general to operations and productions organizations at the Kuwaiti business environment and in specific to organizations in the Oil industry, as well it serves as a good theoretical model for improving operations and production level of the oil industry in other developing and developed countries. Thus, such research findings minimized the literature’s gap found the limited amount of empirical research of TQM implementation in well-developed industries existing in an Arab, developing countries and specifically in Kuwait, where there was no coherent national model for a universal TQM implementation in the Kuwaiti Oil industry in specific and Kuwaiti business environment in general. Finally, this newly developed research framework, which emerged from the literature search, was validated by rigorous quantitative analysis tools including SPSS and Structural Equation Modeling. The quantitative findings of questionnaires collected were supported by the qualitative findings of interviews conducted.
