For some time, oral surgeons have tried several surgical procedures to improve the alveolar ridge for prosthetic appliance construction. The techniques used for this purpose are divided into four groups: submucosal vestibuloplasty; secondary epithelization; soft tissue grafting and transpositional flaps. Twenty patients who had problems to wear dentures due to unsatisfactory retention and stability were selected at the Oral and MaxilloFacial Surgery and Traumatology Clinic of Dental School of São José dos Campos. They were divided in two groups and operated by submucosal vestibuloplasty using stents and secondary epithelization vestibuloplasty by Clark's technique and were evaluated twelve months after operations in relationship of the sulcus depth. The results were obtained by clinical and radiological examination before and after surgery, and they are similar to those found in the literature reaching satisfactory functional judgement

This work shows the preparation and characterization of the new nanocomposites based on fibroin and biocellulose. Bacterial cellulose (BC) is an exopolysaccharide produced by bacteria of the genus Gluconacetobacter, which it has identical chemical structure of the cellulose from plants and it has gained attention in the field of research for its unique properties as excellent mechanical properties when dry and hydrated , higher capacity of water retention, moldability , biodegradability and excellent biological affinity . Silk fibroin (SF) is a structural protein present in the cocoon of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, has been identified as suitable for developing optical devices, tissue engineering application, enzyme immobilization, controlled release drug agent biopolymer. Silk fibroin/bacterial cellulose nanocomposite films were prepared impregnating different cellulose charges (0.5 %, 1.0 %, 1.5 %, 2.5 %, 5.0 % and 10.0 %) weight/weight. According mechanical tests and water and Paynes's cup permeability showed that SF/BC 1% nanocomposite has the most relevant results. Poliethylenoglicol (PEG) containing SF films improved optical and mechanical properties when compared to pristine SF film. New SF/BC nanocomposites could be applied in Medicine, as biodegradable packaging and flexible substrates for OLEDs.

Introduction: Pathology associated with retained or partially erupted teeth are common in the general population. Objective: the aim was to evaluate the measurement of pericoronal space of retained third molars and partially erupted teeth in panoramic radiographs. Method: a retrospective study was carried on on the frequency of tooth retention and the problems it can cause in 107 radiographs of patients where the width was measured to verify the presence or absence of diseases associated with the involved teeth. Results: in the 107 panoramic radiographs analyzed the most frequent measurement was of 1.0 mm with 32.71% of cases followed by 2.0 mm with 29.91% of cases. Conclusion: The measurement of the pericoronal sapce of retained third molars and partially retained through its greatest width is in a practical and effective technique for application in routine clinical practice, which suggests the presence or absence of eraly odontogenic pathology

The functional impression technique is one of the most important steps for complete and/or partial edentulism treatment. So, correct analysis and record of supporting structures are essential to determine the denture extension. The functional impression technique has two stages - a customized final impression tray and a border impression - which aims to record the optimal denture supporting area. The aim of this study was to review the literature related to border impression and functional impression techniques, describing the technique and materials, and identifying the procedure’s objectives and function.

Teeth that have lost much of their coronal tooth structure need intraradical devices to achieve a desired retention of the restorative material, restoring aesthetics and function to the patient. For this purpose, various types of intracanal posts have been studied, of wich the fiber posts have been highlighted with its increasing use in the dental market. The purpose of this study was to present a clinical case of using fiberglass post. As well as critically analyze the published works and points of controversy described by different authors related to factors such as different protocols cementation, surface treatments pins, fracture toughness and compression, the possibility of microleakage, diameter and length of the pin, and the various materials used in conjunction with the intracanal retainers. Thus, we concluded that fiber posts showed as an excellent alternative for anterior teeth, since have least 2 mm of tooth remaining.

The obstructive sleep apnea syndrome affects millions of people around the world. The mandibular repositioning devices have been indicated in cases of mild/moderate syndrome; however in edentulous patients its use is deficient since there is no retention. Therefore the objective of this study was to conduct a review on the use of this treatment method combined to osseointegrated implants. A search on the theme: Dental implant and sleep apnea syndromewas performed in the Medline/PubMed, ISI, Cochrane, Dentistry Oral Science, Clinical Trials, Controlled Trials, and Bireme-BvS, databases, and 22 articles were found. After anevaluation 2 studies were selected and the review was complemented with an analysis of randomized controlled trials in the previous seven bases using the key-words: Sleep apnea syndrome, Oral appliance and Randomized controlled trial. The search returned 37 articles, and after they were submitted to inclusion criteria 17 studies were selected. There are a small number of studies presenting the use of dental implants as a mean to assist the stabilization of the mandibular repositioning appliances; those that are available are case reports that focusing on the effectiveness of the technique. Studies examining the effect these appliances in dentate patients indicate improvement in the levels of apnea and snoring. The use of mandibular repositioning appliances in dentate patients is an effective technique in treatment of patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome mild/moderate. Randomized controlled trialsare required in order to enable an analysis of the use of mandibular repositioning devices with the aid of dental implants .
