A plausible microkinetic model has been proposed for the CO oxidation reaction catalysed by palladium (Pd) with the kinetic parameters obtained from the literature. A robust rate expression using the reaction route analysis has been developed for the presented microkinetic scheme and the obtained rate expressions have been validated against the experimental data presented in the literature. A wide range of experimental conditions ranging from single Pd crystals under ultra-high vacuum conditions and impregnated Pd used for fixed bed experiments under atmospheric pressure has been used to validate the reaction mechanism. The mechanisms of densification and creep were examined during spark plasma sintering (SPS) of alumina doped with a low and high level of zirconia or yttria, over a temperature range of 1173-1573 K and stresses between 25 and 100 MPa. Large additions of yttria led clearly to in situ reactions during SPS and the formation of a yttrium-aluminum garnet phase. Dopants generally lead to a reduction in the densification rate, with substantial reductions noted in samples with similar to 5.5 vol% second phase. In contrast to a stress exponent of n similar to 1 for pure alumina, the doped aluminas displayed n similar to 2 corresponding to an interface-controlled diffusion process. The higher activation energies in the composites are consistent with previous data on creep and changes in the interfacial energies. The results reveal a compensation effect, such that an increase in the activation energy is accompanied by a corresponding increase in the pre-exponential term for diffusion.

This paper reports the dynamic compression behavior of ultrafine grained (Hf, Zr)B-2-SiC composites, sintered using reactive spark plasma sintering at 1600 degrees C for 10 min. Dynamic strength of similar to 2.3 GPa has been measured using Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) tests in a reproducible manner at strain rates of 800-1300 s(-1). A comparison with competing boride based armor ceramics, in reference to the spectrum of properties evaluated, establishes the potential of (Hf, Zr)B-2-SiC composites for armor applications. Experiments were conducted at laboratory level to treat the oxides of nitrogen (NOx) present in raw and dry biodiesel exhaust utilizing a combination of electric discharge plasma and bauxite residue, i. e., red mud, an industrial waste byproduct from the aluminum industry. In this paper, the adsorption and a possible catalytic property of bauxite residue are discussed. Nonthermal plasma was generated using dielectric barrier discharges initiated by ac/repetitive pulse energization. The effect of corona electrodes on the plasma generation was qualitatively studied through NOx cleaning. The plasma reactor and adsorbent reactors were connected in cascade while treating the exhaust. The diesel generator, running on biodiesel fuel, was electrically loaded to study the effectiveness of the cascade system in cleaning the exhaust. Interestingly, under the laboratory conditions studied, plasma-bauxite residue combination has shown good synergistic properties and enhanced the NOx removal up to about 90%. With proper scaling up, the suggested cascade system may become an economically feasible option to treat the exhaust in larger installations. The results were discussed emphasizing the role of bauxite residue as an adsorbent and as a room temperature catalyst.

Pt-supported La1-xSrxCoO3 and Pt-doped La1-xSrxCoO3 are synthesized using chemical reduction and solution combustion method, respectively. Chemical reduction is carried out using formaldehyde as a reducing agent giving Pt-supported La1-xSrxCoO3. Solution combustion method is used to prepare Pt-doped La1-xSrxCoO3. Detailed characterization using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area measurement, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is carried out to distinguish the Pt-supported and Pt-doped compounds in terms of their morphology and Pt oxidations states. TEM results indeed show the differences in their morphology. Further, electrochemical measurements are performed in neutral medium to differentiate their electrochemical activity. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) shows noticeable differences between Pt-supported La1-xSrxCoO3 and Pt-doped La1-xSrxCoO3. Importantly, our results show that Pt4+ in doped compound has poor to zero electrocatalytic activity toward formic acid and methanol electro-oxidation in comparison to Pt-0 in supported compound. This study shows that metallic Pt in zero oxidation state is a superior catalyst to Pt in +4 oxidation state.

Although HA is highly biocompatible, one of the major disadvantages of HA include the lack of antibacterial property. In an earlier study, we demonstrated the potential role of magnetic field stimulation on bactericidal property in vitro. Following this, it was hypothesized that antibacterial property can be realized if bacteria are grown on magnetic biocomposites in vitro. In addressing this issue, this study demonstrates the development of HA-Fe3O4-based magnetic substrate with multifunctional properties. For this purpose, HA-xFe(3)O(4) (x: 10, 20 and 40wt%) powder compositions were sintered using uniquely designed spark plasma sintering conditions (three stage sintering with final holding temperature of 1050 degrees C for 5min). A saturation magnetization of 24emu/g is measured with HA-40%Fe3O4. Importantly, all the HA-Fe3O4 composites demonstrated bactericidal property by rupturing the membrane of Escherichia coli bacteria, while supporting cell growth of metabolically active human fetal osteoblast cells over 8d culture. A systematic decrease in bacterial viability with Fe3O4 addition is consistent with a commensurate increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Gas discharge plasmas used for thinfilm deposition by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) must be devoid of contaminants, like dust or active species which disturb the intended chemical reaction. In atmospheric pressure plasma systems employing an inert gas, the main source of such contamination is the residual air inside the system. To enable the construction of an atmospheric pressure plasma (APP) system with minimal contamination, we have carried out fluid dynamic simulation of the APP chamber into which an inert gas is injected at different mass flow rates. On the basis of the simulation results, we have designed and built a simple, scaled APP system, which is capable of holding a 100 mm substrate wafer, so that the presence of air (contamination) in the APP chamber is minimized with as low a flow rate of argon as possible. This is examined systematically by examining optical emission from the plasma as a function of inert gas flow rate. It is found that optical emission from the plasma shows the presence of atmospheric air, if the inlet argon flow rate is lowered below 300 sccm. That there is minimal contamination of the APP reactor built here, was verified by conducting an atmospheric pressure PECVD process under acetylene flow, combined with argon flow at 100 sccm and 500 sccm. The deposition of a polymer coating is confirmed by infrared spectroscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows that the polymer coating contains only 5% of oxygen, which is comparable to the oxygen content in polymer deposits obtained in low-pressure PECVD systems. The concentration of Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) in engines which use biodiesel as fuel is higher compared to conventional diesel engine exhaust. In this paper, an attempt has been made to treat this exhaust using a combination of High frequency AC (HFAC) plasma and an industrial waste, Red Mud which shows proclivity towards Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) adsorption. The high frequency AC source in combination with the proposed compact double dielectric plasma reactors is relatively more efficient in converting Nitric Oxide (NO) to NO2. It has been shown that the plasma treated gas enhances the activity of red mud as an adsorbent/catalyst and about 60-72% NOx removal efficiency was observed at a specific energy of 250 J/L. The advantage in this method is the cost effectiveness and abundant availability of the waste red mud in the industry. Further, power estimation studies were carried out using Manley's equation for the two reactors employed in the experiment and a close agreement between experimental and predicted powers was observed. Co3O4 catalysts were prepared by combustion synthesis using different fuels glycine (G), ODH (O) and urea (U). Morphological changes of the materials were observed by using different fuels. The prepared catalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, BET and DRIFTS analysis. All compounds showed 100% conversion of CO below 175C. The prepared catalysts exhibited very high stability and conversions did not decrease even after 50 h of continuous operation. The oxygen storage capacity (OSC) of materials was measured by H-2-TPR analysis. Co3O4-O is having high OSC among the synthesized catalysts. The activation energies of these catalysts were found to be in the range of 42.3-64.8 kJ mol(-1). With DRIFTS analysis, the surface carbonates, superoxide anions, adsorbed CO, O-2 species on the catalyst surface were found and this information was used to develop a detailed reaction pathway. A kinetic model was developed with the help of proposed mechanism and used to fit the data. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Microwave plasma driven chemical vapour deposition was used to synthesize graphene nanosheets from a mixture of acetylene and hydrogen gas molecules. In this plasma, acetylene decomposes to carbon atoms that form nanostructures in the outlet plasma stream and get deposited on the substrate. The GNS consists of a few layers of graphene aligned vertically to the substrate. Graphene layers have been confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and Raman spectral studies were conducted to observe the defective nature of the sample. The growth of nanosheets in a vertical direction is assumed to be due to the effect of electric field and from the difference in the deposition rate in the axial and parallel directions. These vertical graphene sheets are attractive for various applications in energy storage and sensors.

Activation of apoptosis signal regulating kinase 1 (ASK1)-p38 MAPK death signaling cascade is irn plicated in the death of dopaminergic neurons in substantia nigra in Parkinson's disease (PD). We investigated upstream activators of ASK1 using an MPTP mouse model of parkinsonism and assessed the temporal cascade of death signaling in ventral midbrain (VMB) and striatum (ST). MPTP selectively activated ASK1 and downstream 1)38 MAPK in a time dependent manner in VMB alone. This occurred through selective protein thiol oxidation of the redox-sensitive thiol disulfide oxidoreductase, thiorcdoxin (Trxl), resulting in release of its inhibitory association with ASK1, while glutathione-S-transferase ji 1 (GSTM1) remained in reduced form in association with ASK1. Levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF), a known activator of ASK1, increased early after MPTP in VMB. Protein ovariation netvvork analysis (PCNA) using protein states as nodes revealed TNF to be an important node regulating the ASK1 signaling cascade. In confirmation, blocking MPTP-mecliated TNF signaling through intrathecal administration of TNFneutralizing antibody prevented Trxl oxidation and downstream ASK1-p38 MAPK activation. Averting an early increase in TNF, which leads to protein thiol oxidation resulting in activation of ASK1-p38 signaling, may be critical for neuroprotection in PD. Importantly, network analysis can help in understanding the cause/effect relationship within protein networks in complex disease states. (C) 2015 Published by Elsevier Inc.

Yttria stabilized zirconia thin films have been deposited by RF plasma enhanced MOCVD technique on silicon substrates at substrate temperature of 400 degrees C. Plasma of precursor vapors of (2,7,7-trimethyl-3,5-octanedionate) yttrium (known as Y(tod)(3)), (2,7,7-trimethyl-3,5-octanedionate) zirconium (known as Zr(tod)(4)), oxygen and argon gases is used for deposition. To the best of our knowledge, plasma assisted MOCVD of YSZ films using octanediaonate precursors have not been reported in the literature so far. The deposited films have been characterized by GIXRD, FTIR, XPS, FESEM, AFM, XANES, EXAFS, EDAX and spectroscopic ellipsometry. Thickness of the films has been measured by stylus profilometer while tribological property measurement has been done to study mechanical behavior of the coatings. Characterization by different techniques indicates that properties of the films are dependent on the yttria content as well as on the structure of the films. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Pd2Ge nanoparticles were synthesized by superhydride reduction of K2PdCl4 and GeCl4. The syntheses were performed using a solvothermal method in the absence of surfactants, and the size of the nanoparticles was controlled by varying the reaction time. The powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and transmission electron microscopy data suggest that Pd2Ge nanoparticles were formed as an ordered intermetallic phase. In the crystal structure, Pd and Ge atoms occupy two different crystallographic positions with a vacancy in one of the Ge sites, which was proved by PXRD and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. The catalyst is highly efficient for the electrochemical oxidation of ethanol and is stable up to the 250th cycle in alkaline medium. The electrochemical active surface area and current density values obtained, 1.41 cm(2) and 4.1 mA cm(-2), respectively, are superior to those of the commercial Pd on carbon. The experimentally observed data were interpreted in terms of the combined effect of adsorption energies of CH3CO and OH radical, d-band center model, and work function of the corresponding catalyst surfaces.

We report stable ultrathin Au nanowires supported on reduced graphene oxide with outstanding electrocatalytic activity for borohydride oxidation. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements showed abnormal inductive behavior, indicative of surface reactivation. DFT calculations indicate that the origin of the high activity stems from the position of the Au d-band center.
