The requirement for a very accurate dependence analysis to underpin software tools to aid the generation of efficient parallel implementations of scalar code is argued. The current status of dependence analysis is shown to be inadequate for the generation of efficient parallel code, causing too many conservative assumptions to be made. This paper summarises the limitations of conventional dependence analysis techniques, and then describes a series of extensions which enable the production of a much more accurate dependence graph. The extensions include analysis of symbolic variables, the development of a symbolic inequality disproof algorithm and its exploitation in a symbolic Banerjee inequality test; the use of inference engine proofs; the exploitation of exact dependence and dependence pre-domination attributes; interprocedural array analysis; conditional variable definition tracing; integer array tracing and division calculations. Analysis case studies on typical numerical code is shown to reduce the total dependencies estimated from conventional analysis by up to 50%. The techniques described in this paper have been embedded within a suite of tools, CAPTools, which combines analysis with user knowledge to produce efficient parallel implementations of numerical mesh based codes.

Dispersion relations are obtained for the propagation of symmetric and antisymmetric modes in a free transversely isotropic plate. Dispersion curves are plotted for the first four symmetric modes for a magnesium plate immersed in water. The first mode is highly damped and switches over to the second mode when the normalized frequency exceeds 12.

This paper explores how new media environments represent and create collective memories of trauma; how creative digital practice can be a key methodology for memory studies and the potential of digital interfaces for representing and reconciling collective memories of trauma, particularly in the context of Cyprus. My project MemoryBank will be used as a model to discuss the potential role of creative digital media practice in both community arts and the formal education process in order to enable participants to engage with the process of peace and reconciliation in Cyprus and circumvent and negotiate politically ossified collective memory narratives and chauvinistic histories. Annular, ring or torsional shear testers are commonly used in bulk solids handling research for the purpose of powder characterisation or equipment design. This paper reports from a DEFRA sponsored project which aims to develop an industrial powder flow-ability tester, (based on the annular shear tester) that is economic to buy and quick and easy to use in trained but unskilled hands. This paper compares the wall failure loci measured with an annular shear cell with measurements obtained using the accepted standard wall friction tester, the Jenike shear cell. These wall failure loci have been measured for several bulk solids which range from fine cohesive powders to free-flowing granular materials, on a stainless steel 304 2B wall surface.

In this paper the dependence of the power consumption of pneumatic conveyors upon conveyed materials, pipeline route and bore, and mode of flow has been examined. The findings are that, with different materials and modes of flow, not only is the amount of power consumed very different but it varies in different ways with pipe bore and routing. Additionally it has been found that, for any given conveying system, the choice of air mover also has a strong influence on the power requirement.

ABSTRACT: At a large North Sea pockmark, with active methane seeps, surface sediments were found to have higher insoluble sulphide concentrations than sedlments from the surrounding area. The fauna of the pockmark was characterized by 2 species which have not pi-evlously been reported from the Fladen Ground in the northern North Sea. These species were a b~valve, Thyasira sarsi (which is known to contain endosymbiotic sulphur-oxidising bacteria) and a mouthless and gutless nematode, Astomonerna sp., which also contains endosymbiotic bacteria The nematode was the dominant meiofauna species in the pockmark sediments. Both macro-lnfauna and total nematodes were in low abundance in samples taken from the base of the pockmark. Sediment samples from the pockmark contained numerous otoliths, implying that substantial winnowing of the sediment had taken place. This was supported by studies on the sulphide concentrations in the sediment which showed multiple layering of the sediments on the sides of the pockmark, suggesting displacement. The carbon isotope compositions (6I3c) of the tissues of benthic animals from in and around the pockmark were generally in the range -16 to -2O%, indicating that little methane-derived carbon was contributing to their nutrition. T sarsi had the most 13c-depleted tissues, -31.4 to -35.1 L, confirming the nutritional dependence of this species on chemoautotrophic bacteria that utilize reduced sulphur.

Recent recruitment failure of lesser sandeel Ammodytes marinus, a key prey fish in the North Sea, followed by several years of low spawning stock biomass, prompted us to investigate factors influencing the recruitment of this species. We tested 2 hypotheses that relate to ecological mechanisms of recruitment regulation in lesser sandeel: (1) a positive spawning stock–recruitment relationship is decoupled in years associated with high abundances of age-1 sandeels and (2) the survival success of early larvae depends specifically on the abundance of Calanus finmarchicus and not C. helgolandicus. The findings of the present study supported both hypotheses and resulted in a multiple linear recruitment model with pronounced predictive capabilities. The model includes interactions between age-1 abundance and spawning stock biomass, plus the effect of C. finmarchicus abundance, and it explained around 65% of the inter-annual variation in recruitment in contrast to only 12% by a traditional Ricker curve. We argue that early egg production in C. finmarchicus supports the survival of larvae, and that climate-generated shifts in the Calanus species composition lead to a mismatch in timing between food availability and the early life history of lesser sandeels.
