We theoretically study many-body excitations in three different quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) electron systems: (i) those formed on the surface of liquid Helium; (ii) in two coupled semiconductor quantum wires; and (iii) Q1D electrons embedded in polar semiconductor-based quantum wires. Our results show intersubband coupling between higher subbands and the two lowest subbands affecting even the lower energy intersubband plasmons on the liquid Helium surface. Concerning the second system, we show a pronounced extra peak appearing in the intersubband impurity spectral function for temperatures as high as 20 K. We finally show coupled intersubband plasmon-phonon modes surviving for temperatures up to 300 K.

Dyson's theory of conduction electron spin resonance (CESR) has been used in the limit d less than or equal to delta (d being the thickness of the sample and delta the skin depth of the microwave field) to obtain the microwave conductivity from the (A/B) ratio of the CESR absorbed power derivative. In this work we calculate the CESR absorbed power derivative using Kaplan's approach and show that the (A/B) ratio can be enhanced if asymmetrical penetration of microwave is used, which means that the microwave field enters into the sample from one of the faces. Therefore, the determination of the microwave conductivity from the (A/B) ratio of the CESR line can be performed for thinner samples. Experimentally, asymmetrical penetration can be obtained if one of the sample's faces is covered with a thin gold layer. The determination of microwave conductivity in conducting polymers films is among the possible applications of this method. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

The electrochemical oxidation of (benzylideneacetone)dicarbonyl(phosphine)iron(0) and benzylideneacetone)dicarbonyl(phosphite)iron(0) complexes was studied by cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential electrolysis in 0.5 M NaClO4 (dimethyl formamide). The results suggest that the electrode process involves a complicated mechanism, the species formed in the first oxidation step being highly unstable and its decomposition producing free benzylideneacetone, free phosphine or phosphite, solvated iron(II) species and carbon monoxide which adsorbs on the platinum electrode. A linear relationship between E(p/2)ox and the ligand parameter P(L) was obtained with E(s) = 0.41 V and beta = 0.964, where E(s) and beta-denote electron-richness and polarizability of the metal centre, respectively.

We analyze the production and detection of the Higgs boson in the next generation of linear e+e-colliders operating in the egamma mode. In particular, we study the production mechanism e+gamma --> egammagamma --> e + H, where one photon is generated via the laser backscattering mechanism, while the other is radiated via the usual bremsstrahlung process. We show that this is the most important mechanism for Higgs boson production in a 500 GeV egamma collider for M(H) greater than or similar to 140 GeV. We also study the signals and backgrounds for detection of the Higgs boson in the different decay channels bbBAR, W+W-, and ZZ, and suggest kinematical cuts to improve the signature of an intermediate-mass Higgs boson.

A pressed pellet of CIO (-)(4) poly (3-methylthiophene) (P3MT) was heated for two hours at 85 degrees C and suddenly dropped in liquid nitrogen. A change was observed around 220 K in the Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) spectra when the sample was slowly cooled from room temperature. ESR line asymmetry parameter (A/B) showed two spatially separated phases. One was identified as a small metallic-like phase. The other phase, the larger one, makes a transition to a semiconducting Charge-Density Wave (CDW) state.

We present the zero-temperature phase diagram of the one-dimensional t(2g)-orbital Hubbard model, obtained using the density-matrix renormalization group and Lanczos techniques. Emphasis is given to the case of the electron density n=5 corresponding to five electrons per site, while several other cases for electron densities between n=3 and 6 are also studied. At n=5, our results indicate a first-order transition between a paramagnetic (PM) insulator phase, with power-law slowly decaying correlations, and a fully polarized ferromagnetic (FM) state by tuning the Hund's coupling. The results also suggest a transition from the n=5 PM insulator phase to a metallic regime by changing the electron density, either via hole or electron doping. The behavior of the spin, charge, and orbital correlation functions in the FM and PM states are also described in the text and discussed. The robustness of these two states against varying parameters suggests that they may be of relevance in quasi-one-dimensional Co-oxide materials, or even in higher dimensional cobaltite systems as well.

The free mycolic acid fraction from Rhodococcus lentifragmentus was derivatized to methyl esters and further fractionated into saturated (F-0), monounsaturated (F-1) and diunsaturated (F-2) species using argentation-TLC. Methyl esters fractions F-0, F-1 and F-2, accounting for approximately 7.4%, 53.1% and 39.5%, respectively, were analyzed by electron impact (EI) and chemical ionization (CI) mass spectrometries. According to EI-MS, peaks observed for M(+)-18, that were prominent compared to those representing M(+)-32 and M(+)-(18 + 32), indicated that the carbon chain size ranged from C-36 to C-48. The pyrolytic cleavage of methyl mycolates (R(2)-CHOH-CH(R(1))-COOCH3), following the McLafferty rearrangement released fragment ions corresponding to, (a) the alpha-subunit, representing the fatty acid methyl ester (R(1)-CH2-COOCH3), methyl hexadecanoate, methyl tetradecanoate and methyl dodecanoate in decreasing order of relative intensity of peaks, and (b) the beta-subunit, representing the meroaldehyde moiety (R(2)-CHO). The saturated meroaldehyde species exhibited peaks representing meroaldehyde minus 18 mass units in which R(2) ranged from C19H39 to C31H63. The monunsaturated species exhibited peaks representing the meroaldehyde in which R(2) ranged from C19H37 to C31H61; peaks corresponding to meroaldehyde minus 18 mass units appeared only in the most abundant components, C29H57CHO, C27H53CHO, C25H49CHO and C31H61CHO, in a decreasing order of relative abundance. The diunsaturated species exhibited peaks essentially corresponding to meroaldehyde in which R(2) corresponded to C31H59 and C29H55; the latter displayed a relative intensity that was about one-half compared to that of the former. Fractions F-0, F-1 and F-2 showed a more intense pyrolytic fragmentation under CI-MS in contrast to results found under EI-MS. Therefore, peaks representing the alpha-subunit and the beta-subunit were more prominent than the ones representing the fragmentation of the hydrocarbon chain. Moreover, the beta-subunit of saturated species exhibited peaks corresponding to meroaldehyde plus hydrogen, and no dehydration of the beta-subunit occurred in this case. In turn, the beta-subunit of monounsaturated and diunsaturated species showed peaks representing both the meroaldehyde plus hydrogen and its dehydration product plus hydrogen. Thus, the presence of unsaturation in the meroaldehyde subunit of methyl mycolate facilitates appearance of dehydration fragment ions under chemical ionization procedure.

A more direct and efficient route to the syntheses of [Ru(NH3)(4)(X-Y)](BF4)(2), where X-Y can be 2-acetylpyridine (2-acpy) or 2-benzoylpyridine (2-bzpy), based on the reactions of [RuCl(NH3)(5)]Cl-2 with these ortho-substituted azines is described. The [Ru(2-acpy)(NH3)(4)](BF4)(2) and [Ru(NH3)(5)(2-bzpy)](BF4)(2) complexes have a molar conductance of 328 and 292 Ohm(-1) cm(2) mol(-1), respectively, corresponding to a 1:2 species in solution. These complexes showed two intense absorption bands around 620-650 and 380 nm, the energies of which are solvent dependent, decreasing with the increase of the Gutman's donor number of the solvent, and were assigned as metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT). The complexes have oxidation potentials (Ru-II/III) of +0.380 V vs. Ag/AgCl (2-acpy) and +0.400 V vs. Ag/AgCl (2-bzpy), and reduction potentials (X-Y0/-) of -1.10 V vs. Ag/AgCl (2-acpy) and -0.950 V vs. Ag/AgCl (2-bzpy) on CF3COOH/NaCF3COO at pH=3.0, scan rate 100 mV s(-1), [Ru]=1.0x10(-3) mol l(-1). Both processes show a coupled chemical reaction. Upon oxidation of the metal center, the MLCT absorption bands are bleached and restored upon subsequent reduction. In order to confirm the structure of the complexes a detailed LH NMR investigation was performed in d(6)-acetone. Further confirmation of the structure was obtained by recording the N-15 NMR spectrum of [Ru(NH3)(4)(2-bzpy)](2+) in d(6)-DMSO using the INEPT pulse sequence improving the sensitivity of N-15 by polarization transfer from the protons to the N-15. The Nuclear Overhauser Effect (NOE) experiments were made qualitatively for [Ru(NH3)(4)(2-acpy)](2+), and showed that H-6 of the pyridine is close to a NH3 proton, which should then be in a cis position, and, hence, confirming that acpy is acting as a bidentate ligand. Pt-modified SnO2 electrodes were prepared onto titanium substrates in the form of thin films of similar to2 mum at different temperatures in the range from 200 to 400degreesC. Surface morphology was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that Pt-SnO2 sol-gel layers are significantly rough and have a low porosity. X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies showed that the films consist of Pt nanoparticles with average size varying from about 5 to 10 nm, depending on the preparation temperature, and amorphous tin oxide. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was employed to determine the superficial composition of the electrodes and demonstrated the presence of Sn4+ in all the samples. XPS spectra of the Pt 4f electrons showed the presence of Pt in the zero-valence state as well as in ionic forms. The general electrochemical behavior was characterized by cyclic voltammetry in 1 mol l(-1) HClO4 and the electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of formaldehyde was investigated by potential sweeps and chronoamperometry. The results obtained show that the Pt-SnO2/Ti system exhibits a significant catalytic activity for the oxidation of formaldehyde, with an onset potential below 0.1 V. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Here we describe the application of microparticles (MPs) for the delivery and release of the drug a benzopsoralen. We also evaluated the intracellular distribution and cellular uptake of the drug by using an encapsulation technique for therapeutic optimization. MPs containing the compound 3-ethoxycarbonyl-2H-benzofuro[3,2-f]-1-benzopyran-2-one (psoralen A) were prepared by the solvent evaporation technique, and parameters such as particle size, drug encapsulation efficiency, effect of the encapsulation process on the drug's photochemistry, zeta potential, external morphology, and < i > in vitro release behavior were evaluated. The intracellular distribution of MPs as well as their uptake by tissues were monitored. Size distribution studies using dynamic ligh scattering and scanning electron microscopy revealed that the MPs are spherical in shape with a diameter of 1.4 mu m. They present low tendency toward aggregation, as confirmed by their zeta potential (+10.6 mV). The loading efficiency obtained was 75%. As a consequence of the extremely low diffusivity of the drug in aqueous medium, the drug release profile of the MPs in saline phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) was much slower than that obtained in the biological environment. Among the population of peritoneal phagocytic cells, only macrophages were able to phagocytose poly-d,l-lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) MP. The use of psoralen A in association with ultraviolet light (360 nm) revealed morphological characteristics of cell damage such as cytoplasmic vesiculation, mitochondria condensation, and swelling of both the granular endoplasmatic reticulum and the nuclear membrane. These results indicate that PLGA MP could be a promising delivery system for psoralen in connection with ultraviolet irradiation therapy (PUVA).

Pentacarbonyliron was oxidized with H2O2, in organic solvents, to give colloidal sols. The aqueous-ethanolic sol is highly stable and undergoes thermally-reversible coagulation. Its solid phase was found to be a non-crystalline Fe (III) hydroxoacetate which is transformed to α-Fe2O3 when heated to 300°C. Iron-bound acetate groups are assumed to have a major role in the sol stability, by preserving the amorphous solid phase. Dry hydroxoacetate particles were heated under vacuum; scanning electron microscopy revealed that these particles coalesce and grow, as in a sintering process but at low temperatures (100-250°). © 1987.

Cytogenetic studies conduced on a sample of 19 specimens of rainbow trout (Oncorhyncus mykiss) showed that 6 presented two chromosomes with a single subterminal AgNOR on the short arms and 13 presented one chromosome with a single subterminal Ag-NOR and a second chromosome with two small subterminal Ag-NORs. Synaptonemal complex studies showed the presence of a pairing failure involving the two lateral elements (LEs) of the NOR-bearing chromosomes only in those specimens with two different NOR-bearing chromosomes, suggesting that the chromosomes with two Ag-NORs originated from a paracentric inversion involving a terminal segment of the original NOR-bearing chromosome. A comparative analysis between three normal and three heterozygous fishes suggest that in the latter group the LEs of the NOR-bearing chromosomes initiate the synaptic process in a more delayed manner, the synapsis develops more quickly, and the nucleolus stays associated with chromosomes for a longer time.

The Dysonian line in the limit d < or ∼ δ, where d is the thickness and 6 the skin depth, was fitted to a combination of absorption and dispersion Lorentzian lines. This procedure allows one to determine not only microwave conductivity from the Dysonian line but also the true g value, linewidth, and paramagnetic susceptibility by the measurement of five parameters of the ESR absorption-derivative Dysonian line. ©1990 Academic Press, inc.

For retarding carbon oxidation in refractories during the preheating of metallurgical furnaces, a ceramic coating, made mainly of sodium phosphosilicate and clay was developed. The coating presents high adherence to the substrate with no swelling. The coating was characterized by thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction at room temperature (XRD) and at high temperature (HTXRD), X-ray fluorescence and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). The glass transition temperature is reached at 800 °C and only glassy phase is observed above this temperature. Thus the mechanism of protection seems to be the formation of a glassy phase on the surface of the refractory, and the coating tends to be more efficient at temperatures higher than 800 °C.
