Pristine and long-chain functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were incorporated successfully in supramolecular organogels formed by an all-trans tri(p-phenylenevinylene) bis-aldoxime to give rise to new nanocomposites with interesting mechanical, thermal and electrical properties. Variable-temperature UV-vis and fluorescence spectra reveal both pristine and functionalized SWNTs promote aggregation of the gelator molecules and result in quenching of the UV-vis and fluorescence intensity. Electron microscopy and confocal microscopy show the existence of a densely packed and directionally aligned fibrous network in the resulting nanocomposites. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) of the composites shows that incorporation of SWNTs increases the gel formation temperature. The DSC of the xerogels of 1-SWNT composites indicates formation of different thermotropic mesophases which is also evident from polarized optical microscopy. The reinforced aggregation of the gelators on SWNT doping was reflected in the mechanical properties of the composites. Rheology of the composites demonstrates the formation of a rigid and viscoelastic solid-like assembly on SWNT incorporation. The composites from gel-SWNTs were found to be semiconducting in nature and showed enhanced electrical conductivity compared to that of the native organogel. Upon irradiation with a near IR laser at 1064 nm for 5 min it was possible to selectively induce a gel-to-sol phase transition of the nanocomposites, while irradiation for even 30 min of the native organogel under identical conditions did not cause any gel-to-sol conversion.

The nanoindentation technique has been employed to relate the mechanical properties of saccharin single crystals with their internal structure. Indentations were performed on (100) and (011) faces to assess the mechanical anisotropy. The load-displacement (P-h) curves indicate significant differences in the nature of the plastic deformation on the two faces. The P-h curves obtained on the (011) plane are smooth, reflecting homogeneous plasticity. However, displacement bursts (pop-ins) are observed in the P-h curves obtained on the (100) plane suggesting a discrete deformation mechanism. Marginal differences exist in the hardness and modulus on the two faces that may, in part, be rationalized, although one notes that saccharin has a largely three-dimensional close-packed structure. The structural origins of the fundamentally different deformation mechanisms on (100) and (011) are discussed in terms of the dimensionality of the hydrogen bonding networks. Down the (100) planes, the saccharin dimers are stacked and are stabilized by nonspecific van der Wants interactions mostly between aromatic rings. However, down the (011) planes, the molecules are stabilized by more directional and cross-linked C-H ... O hydrogen bonds. This anisotropy in crystal packing and interactions is reflected in the mechanical behavior on these faces. The displacements associated with the pop-ins were found to he integral multiples oldie molecule separation distances. Nanoindentation offers an opportunity to compare experimentally, and in a quantitative way, the various intermolecular interactions that fire present in a molecular crystal.

Nanoclusters are objects made up of several to thousands of atoms and form a transitional state of matter between single atoms and bulk materials. Due to their large surface-to-volume ratio, nanoclusters exhibit exciting and yet poorly studied size dependent properties. When deposited directly on bare metal surfaces, the interaction of the cluster with the substrate leads to alteration of the cluster properties, making it less or even non-functional. Surfaces modified with self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) were shown to form an interesting alternative platform, because of the possibility to control wettability by decreasing the surface reactivity and to add functionalities to pre-formed nanoclusters. In this thesis, the underlying size effects and the influence of the nanocluster environment are investigated. The emphasis is on the structural and magnetic properties of nanoclusters and their interaction with thiol SAMs. We report, for the first time, a ferromagnetic-like spin-glass behaviour of uncapped nanosized Au islands tens of nanometres in size. The flattening kinetics of the nanocluster deposition on thiol SAMs are shown to be mediated mainly by the thiol terminal group, as well as the deposition energy and the particle size distribution. On the other hand, a new mechanism for the penetration of the deposited nanoclusters through the monolayers is presented, which is fundamentally different from those reported for atom deposition on alkanethiols. The impinging cluster is shown to compress the thiol layer against the Au surface and subsequently intercalate at the thiol-Au interface. The compressed thiols try then to straighten and push the cluster away from the surface. Depending on the cluster size, this restoring force may or may not enable a covalent cluster-surface bond formation, giving rise to various cluster-surface binding patterns. Compression and straightening of the thiol molecules pinpoint the elastic nature of the SAMs, which has been investigated in this thesis using nanoindentation. The nanoindenation method has been applied to SAMs of varied tail groups, giving insight into the mechanical properties of thiol modified metal surfaces.

Lithium-containing aluminium alloys are of considerable current interest in the aerospace and aircraft industries because lithium additions to aluminium improve the modulus and decrease the density compared to conventional aluminium alloys. Few commercial aluminium-lithium alloys have emerged for use in the aerospace industry. One such candidate is 8090, a precipitation-hardenable Al-Li-Cu-Mg alloy. The influence of electron-beam welding on the microstructure and mechanical properties of alloy 8090 material has been evaluated through microscopical observations and mechanical tests. Microscopic observations of the electronbeam welds revealed an absence of microporosity and hot cracking, but revealed presence of microporosity in the transverse section of the weld. Mechanical tests revealed the electronbeam weld to have lower strength, elongation and joint efficiency. A change in microscopic fracture mode was observed for the welded material when compared to the unwelded counterpart. An attempt is made to rationalize the behaviour in terms of competing mechanistic effects involving the grain structure of the material, the role of matrix deformation characteristics, grain-boundary chemistry and grain-boundary failure.

Soils showing changes in plasticity characteristics upon driving form an important group in tropical soils. These changes are attributed to the grouping of particles into aggregates either due to mineralogy or presence of cementing agents and/or pore fluid characteristics. These changes are found to be permanent. In this paper, the effect of these changes leading to changes in index properties is discussed. The coefficient of permeability has been found to be comparable at liquid limit water content for different soils of varying liquid limit values. Permeability is an indirect reflection of microstructure and indicates the flow rate, which depends upon pore geometry. Other mechanical properties like compressibility and shear strength also depend upon pore geometry. These microstructural aspects of liquid limit as a reference state for the analysis of engineering behavior of tropical soils are examined in detail.

Particulate composites based on polymer matrices generally contain fillers, especially those that are abundantly available and are cheaper. The inclusion of these, besides improving the properties, makes the system costwise viable, In the present study, fly ash was tried as a filler in epoxy. The filler particle surfaces were modified using three chemical surface treatment techniques in order to elicit the effect of adhesion at the interface on the mechanical properties of these composites. The compatibilizing of the filler with the use of a silane coupling agent yielded the best compression strength values. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) has been used to characterize and supplement the mechanical test data.

Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are fascinating systems exhibiting many novel physical properties. In this paper, we give a brief review of the structural, electronic, vibrational, and mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes. In situ resonance Raman scattering of SWNTs investigated under electrochemical biasing demonstrates that the intensity of the radial breathing mode varies significantly in a nonmonotonic manner as a function of the cathodic bias voltage, but does not change appreciably under anodic bias. These results can be quantitatively understood in terms of the changes in the energy gaps between the 1 D van Hove singularities in the electron density of states, arising possibly due to the alterations in the overlap integral of pi bonds between the p-orbitals of the adjacent carbon atoms. In the second part of this paper, we review our high-pressure X-ray diffraction results, which show that the triangular lattice of the carbon nanotube bundles continues to persist up to similar to10 GPa. The lattice is seen to relax just before the phase transformation, which is observed at similar to10 GPa. Further, our results display the reversibility of the 2D lattice symmetry even after compression up to 13 GPa well beyond the 5 GPa value observed recently. These experimental results explicitly validate the predicted remarkable mechanical resilience of the nanotubes.

Polymer composites are generally filled with either fibrous or particulate materials to improve the mechanical properties. In choosing the fillers one looks for materials that are inexpensive and available in abundance, in order to realize a cost reduction also. Also, often these fibres/fillers are treated to improve the matrix adhesion and thereby mechanical properties. The present study is focussed on the influence of water ingression in such filler-modified composites and the attendant changes in the compressive properties. The changes in property effected following exposure to aqueous media and the influence interface modification has on the scenario is emphasized in the work. It is seen that for plain epoxy and fly ash filled systems the strengths are increased following exposure to aqueous media. The composites with surface-treated ash particles, on the other hand, record a drop in the values. Modulus values show are increased to varying degree in unfilled and filled systems. The study also includes a fractographic analysis of the tested samples with and without exposure to water.

We report on the formation of a stable Body-Centered Heptahedral (BCH) crystalline nanobridge structure of diameter ~ 1nm under high strain rate tensile loading to a <100> Cu nanowire. Extensive Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations are performed. Six different cross-sectional dimensions of Cu nanowires are analyzed, i.e. 0.3615 x 0.3615 nm2, 0.723 x 0.723 nm2, 1.0845 x 1.0845 nm2, 1.446 x 1.446 nm2, 1.8075 x 1.8075 nm2, and 2.169 x 2.169 nm2. The strain rates used in the present simulations are 1 x 109 s-1, 1 x 108 s-1, and 1 x 107 s-1. We have shown that the length of the nanobridge can be characterized by larger plastic strain. A large plastic deformation is an indication that the structure is highly stable. The BCH nanobridge structure also shows enhanced mechanical properties such as higher fracture toughness and higher failure strain. The effect of temperature, strain rate and size of the nanowire on the formation of BCH structure is also explained in details. We also show that the initial orientation of the nanowires play an important role on the formation of BCH crystalline structure. Results indicate that proper tailoring of temperature and strain rate during processing or in the device can lead to very long BCH nanobridge structure of Cu with enhanced mechanical properties, which may find potential application for nano-scale electronic circuits.

The effect of 4.0 MeV proton irradiation on the microstructure and mechanical properties of nanocrystalline (nc) nickel was investigated. The irradiation damage induced in the sample was of the order of 0.004 dpa. Transmission electron microscopy of irradiated samples indicated the presence of dislocation loops within the grains. An increase in hardness and strain-rate sensitivity (m) of nc-Ni with irradiation was noted. The rate-controlling deformation mechanism in irradiated nc-Ni was identified to be interaction of dislocations with irradiation-induced defects. (C) 2011 Acta Materialia Inc. Zinc-aluminium cast alloys (ZA alloys) exhibit good castability and mechanical properties but these alloys lack creep resistance and high temperature stability. One solution to improve these properties is to reinforce with ceramic particles or fibres, to result in MMCs. MMCs can be produced using casting technique involving infiltration. A systematic investigation was taken and this paper discusses the salient findings of the study on the ZA-27 alloy based MMCs produced through squeeze casting. (Reinforcing fibers: SAFFIL (chopped alumina) or mullite.)

This paper deals with preparation of nanocomposites using modified nanoclay (organoclay) and polypropylene (PP), with, and without compatibilizer (m-TMI-g-PP) to study the effects of modified nanoclay and compatibilizer on viscoelastic properties. Nanocomposites were prepared in two steps; compounding of master batch of nanoclay, polypropylene and m-TMI-g-PP in a torque rheometer and blending of this master-batch with polypropylene in a twin-screw extruder in the specific proportions to yield 3-9% nanoclay by weight in the composite. Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) tests were carried out to investigate the viscoelastic behavior of virgin polypropylene and nanocomposites. The dynamic mechanical properties such as storage modulus (E'), loss modulus (E `') and damping coefficient (tand) of PP and nano-composites were investigated with and without compatibilizer in the temperature range of -40 degrees C to 140 degrees C at a step of 5 degrees C and frequency range of 5 Hz to 100 Hz at a step of 10 Hz. Storage modulus and loss modulus of the nano-composites was significantly higher than virgin polypropylene throughout the temperature range. Storage modulus of the composites increased continuously with increasing nano-content from 3% to 9%. Composites prepared with compatibilizer exhibited inferior storage modulus than the composites without compatibilizer. Surface morphology such as dispersion of nanoclay in the composites with and without compatibilizer was analyzed through Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) that explained the differences in viscoelastic behavior of composites. Addition of boron to cast Ti-6Al-4V alloy leads to significant refinement in grain size, which in turn improves processibilty as well as the mechanical properties of the as-cast alloy. Room temperature tensile and fatigue properties of Wrought Ti-6Al-4V-B alloys with B up to 0.09 wt.% are investigated. Thermo-mechanical processing at 950 degrees C caused kinking of alpha lamellae and alignment of TiB particles in the flow direction with a negligible change in prior beta grain and colony sizes, indicating the absence of dynamic recrystallisation during forging. Characterisation with the aid of X-ray and electron back scattered diffraction reveal a strong basal texture in B free alloy which gets randomised with the 0.09B addition in the forged condition. Marginal enhancement in tensile and fatigue properties upon forging is noted. B free wrought Ti-6Al-4V alloy exhibits better tensile strength as compared to B containing alloy, due to the operation of < c+a > slip on pyramidal planes with high value of CRSS as compared to < a > slip on basal and prismatic planes. Decrease in fatigue strength of Ti-6Al-4V-0.04B in as-cast and the wrought state is observed due to increase in the volume fraction of grain boundary a phase with B addition, which acts as a crack nucleation site. No significant effect of TiB particles on tensile and fatigue properties is observed. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The present study describes the course of microstructure evolution during accumulative roll bonding (ARB) of dissimilar aluminum alloys AA2219 and AA5086. The two alloys were sandwiched as alternate layers and rolled at 300 degrees C up to 8 passes with 50% height reduction per pass. A strong bonding between successive layers accompanied by substantial grain refinement (similar to 200-300 nm) is achieved after 8 passes of ARB. The processing schedule has successfully maintained the iso-strain condition up to 6 cycles between the two alloys. Afterwards, the fracture and fragmentation of AA5086 layers dominate the microstructure evolution. Mechanical properties of the 8 pass ARB processed material were evaluated in comparison to the two starting alloy sheets via room temperature tensile tests along the rolling direction. The strength of the 8 pass ARB processed material lies between that of the two starting alloys while the ductility decreases after ARB than that of the two constituent starting alloys. These differences in mechanical behavior have been attributed to the microstructural aspects of the individual layer and the fragmentation process. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper deals with the quasi-static and dynamic mechanical analysis of montmorillonite filled polypropylene composites. Nanocomposites were prepared by blending montmorillonite (nanoclay) varying from 3 to 9% by weight with polypropylene. The dynamic mechanical properties such as storage modulus, loss modulus and mechanical loss factor of PP and nano-composites were investigated by varying temperature and frequencies. Results showed better mechanical and thermomechanical properties at higher concentration of nanoclay. Regression-based models through design of experiments (DOE) were developed to find the storage modulus and compared with theoretical models and DOE-based models.
