The continental margin off northeast Australia, comprising the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) platform and Queensland Trough, is the largest tropical mixed siliciclastic/carbonate depositional system in existence. We describe a suite of 35 piston cores and two Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) sites from a 130*240 km rectangular area of the Queensland Trough, the slope and basin setting east of the central GBR platform. Oxygen isotope records, physical property (magnetic susceptibility and greyscale) logs, analyses of bulk carbonate content and radiocarbon ages at these locations are used to construct a high resolution stratigraphy. This information is used to quantify mass accumulation rates (MARs) for siliciclastic and carbonate sediments accumulating in the Queensland Trough over the last 31,000 years. For the slope, highest MARs of siliciclastic sediment occur during transgression (1.0 Million Tonnes per year; MT/yr), and lowest MARs of siliciclastic (<0.1 MT/yr) and carbonate (0.2 MT/yr) sediment occur during sea level lowstand. Carbonate MARs are similar to siliciclastic MARs for transgression and highstand (1.1-1.4 MT/yr). In contrast, for the basin, MARs of siliciclastic (0-0.1 MT/yr) and carbonate sediment (0.2-0.4 MT/yr) are continuously low, and within a factor of two, for lowstand, transgression, and highstand. Generic models for carbonate margins predict that maximum and minimum carbonate MARs on the slope will occur during highstand and lowstand, respectively. Conversely, most models for siliciclastic margins suggest maximum and minimum siliciclastic MARs will occur during lowstand and transgression, respectively. Although carbonate MARs in the Queensland Trough are similar to those predicted for carbonate depositional systems, siliciclastic MARs are the opposite. Given uniform siliciclastic MARs in the basin through time, we conclude that terrigenous material is stored on the shelf during sea level lowstand, and released to the slope during transgression as wave driven currents transport shelf sediment offshore.

The Austrian glacier inventory 1969 was compiled from airborne photogrammetry dating from September and October 1969. It includes not only area and surface elevation, but also a number of other parameters as aspect, maximum and minimum elevation, position, ablation and accumulation area. The dataset published here are the orginal results. In course of the compilation of the second Austrian glacier inventory, the photogrammetric data partly has been reanalysed. While in this data set snow areas connected to the glaciers and snow patches in the upper parts of the glacier have not been added to the glacier area, the second glacier inventory included the snow patches.

Environmental constraints imposed on hydropoweroperation are usually given in the form of minimum environmental flows and maximum and minimum rates of change of flows, or ramp rates. One solution proposed to mitigate the environmental impact caused by the flows discharged by a hydropower plant while reducing the economic impact of the above-mentioned constraints consists in building a re-regulationreservoir, or afterbay, downstream of the power plant. Adding pumpingcapability between the re-regulationreservoir and the main one could contribute both to reducing the size of the re-regulationreservoir, with the consequent environmental improvement, and to improving the economic feasibility of the project, always fulfilling the environmental constraints imposed to hydropoweroperation. The objective of this paper is studying the contribution of a re-regulationreservoir to fulfilling the environmental constraints while reducing the economic impact of said constraints. For that purpose, a revenue-driven optimization model based on mixed integer linear programming is used. Additionally, the advantages of adding pumpingcapability are analysed. In order to illustrate the applicability of the methodology, a case study based on a real hydropower plant is presented

Las aplicaciones de la teledetección al seguimiento de lo que ocurre en la superficie terrestre se han ido multiplicando y afinando con el lanzamiento de nuevos sensores por parte de las diferentes agencias espaciales. La necesidad de tener información actualizada cada poco tiempo y espacialmente homogénea, ha provocado el desarrollo de nuevos programas como el Earth Observing System (EOS) de la National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Uno de los sensores que incorpora el buque insignia de ese programa, el satélite TERRA, es el Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR), diseñado para capturar información multiangular de la superficie terrestre. Ya desde los años 1970, se conocía que la reflectancia de las diversas ocupaciones y usos del suelo variaba en función del ángulo de observación y de iluminación, es decir, que eran anisotrópicas. Tal variación estaba además relacionada con la estructura tridimensional de tales ocupaciones, por lo que se podía aprovechar tal relación para obtener información de esa estructura, más allá de la que pudiera proporcionar la información meramente espectral. El sensor MISR incorpora 9 cámaras a diferentes ángulos para capturar 9 imágenes casi simultáneas del mismo punto, lo que permite estimar con relativa fiabilidad la respuesta anisotrópica de la superficie terrestre. Varios trabajos han demostrado que se pueden estimar variables relacionadas con la estructura de la vegetación con la información que proporciona MISR. En esta Tesis se ha realizado una primera aplicación a la Península Ibérica, para comprobar su utilidad a la hora de estimar variables de interés forestal. En un primer paso se ha analizado la variabilidad temporal que se produce en los datos, debido a los cambios en la geometría de captación, es decir, debido a la posición relativa de sensores y fuente de iluminación, que en este caso es el Sol. Se ha comprobado cómo la anisotropía es mayor desde finales de otoño hasta principios de primavera debido a que la posición del Sol es más cercana al plano de los sensores. También se ha comprobado que los valores máximo y mínimo se van desplazando temporalmente entre el centro y el extremo angular. En la caracterización multiangular de ocupaciones del suelo de CORINE Land Cover que se ha realizado, se puede observar cómo la forma predominante en las imágenes con el Sol más alto es convexa con un máximo en la cámara más cercana a la fuente de iluminación. Sin embargo, cuando el Sol se encuentra mucho más bajo, ese máximo es muy externo. Por otra parte, los datos obtenidos en verano son mucho más variables para cada ocupación que los de noviembre, posiblemente debido al aumento proporcional de las zonas en sombra. Para comprobar si la información multiangular tiene algún efecto en la obtención de imágenes clasificadas según ocupación y usos del suelo, se han realizado una serie de clasificaciones variando la información utilizada, desde sólo multiespectral, a multiangular y multiespectral. Los resultados muestran que, mientras para las clasificaciones más genéricas la información multiangular proporciona los peores resultados, a medida que se amplían el número de clases a obtener tal información mejora a lo obtenido únicamente con información multiespectral. Por otra parte, se ha realizado una estimación de variables cuantitativas como la fracción de cabida cubierta (Fcc) y la altura de la vegetación a partir de información proporcionada por MISR a diferentes resoluciones. En el valle de Alcudia (Ciudad Real) se ha estimado la fracción de cabida cubierta del arbolado para un píxel de 275 m utilizando redes neuronales. Los resultados muestran que utilizar información multiespectral y multiangular puede mejorar casi un 20% las estimaciones realizadas sólo con datos multiespectrales. Además, las relaciones obtenidas llegan al 0,7 de R con errores inferiores a un 10% en Fcc, siendo éstos mucho mejores que los obtenidos con el producto elaborado a partir de datos multiespectrales del sensor Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), también a bordo de Terra, para la misma variable. Por último, se ha estimado la fracción de cabida cubierta y la altura efectiva de la vegetación para 700.000 ha de la provincia de Murcia, con una resolución de 1.100 m. Los resultados muestran la relación existente entre los datos espectrales y los multiangulares, obteniéndose coeficientes de Spearman del orden de 0,8 en el caso de la fracción de cabida cubierta de la vegetación, y de 0,4 en el caso de la altura efectiva. Las estimaciones de ambas variables con redes neuronales y diversas combinaciones de datos, arrojan resultados con R superiores a 0,85 para el caso del grado de cubierta vegetal, y 0,6 para la altura efectiva. Los parámetros multiangulares proporcionados en los productos elaborados con MISR a 1.100 m, no obtienen buenos resultados por sí mismos pero producen cierta mejora al incorporarlos a la información espectral. Los errores cuadráticos medios obtenidos son inferiores a 0,016 para la Fcc de la vegetación en tanto por uno, y 0,7 m para la altura efectiva de la misma. Regresiones geográficamente ponderadas muestran además que localmente se pueden obtener mejores resultados aún mejores, especialmente cuando hay una mayor variabilidad espacial de las variables estimadas. En resumen, la utilización de los datos proporcionados por MISR ofrece una prometedora vía de mejora de resultados en la media-baja resolución, tanto para la clasificación de imágenes como para la obtención de variables cuantitativas de la estructura de la vegetación. ABSTRACT Applications of remote sensing for monitoring what is happening on the land surface have been multiplied and refined with the launch of new sensors by different Space Agencies. The need of having up to date and spatially homogeneous data, has led to the development of new programs such as the Earth Observing System (EOS) of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). One of the sensors incorporating the flagship of that program, the TERRA satellite, is Multi-angle Imaging Spectroradiometer (MISR), designed to capture the multi-angle information of the Earth's surface. Since the 1970s, it was known that the reflectance of various land covers and land uses varied depending on the viewing and ilumination angles, so they are anisotropic. Such variation was also related to the three dimensional structure of such covers, so that one could take advantage of such a relationship to obtain information from that structure, beyond which spectral information could provide. The MISR sensor incorporates 9 cameras at different angles to capture 9 almost simultaneous images of the same point, allowing relatively reliable estimates of the anisotropic response of the Earth's surface. Several studies have shown that we can estimate variables related to the vegetation structure with the information provided by this sensor, so this thesis has made an initial application to the Iberian Peninsula, to check their usefulness in estimating forest variables of interest. In a first step we analyzed the temporal variability that occurs in the data, due to the changes in the acquisition geometry, i.e. the relative position of sensor and light source, which in this case is the Sun. It has been found that the anisotropy is greater from late fall through early spring due to the Sun's position closer to the plane of the sensors. It was also found that the maximum and minimum values are displaced temporarily between the center and the ends. In characterizing CORINE Land Covers that has been done, one could see how the predominant form in the images with the highest sun is convex with a maximum in the camera closer to the light source. However, when the sun is much lower, the maximum is external. Moreover, the data obtained for each land cover are much more variable in summer that in November, possibly due to the proportional increase in shadow areas. To check whether the information has any effect on multi-angle imaging classification of land cover and land use, a series of classifications have been produced changing the data used, from only multispectrally, to multi-angle and multispectral. The results show that while for the most generic classifications multi-angle information is the worst, as there are extended the number of classes to obtain such information it improves the results. On the other hand, an estimate was made of quantitative variables such as canopy cover and vegetation height using information provided by MISR at different resolutions. In the valley of Alcudia (Ciudad Real), we estimated the canopy cover of trees for a pixel of 275 m by using neural networks. The results showed that using multispectral and multiangle information can improve by almost 20% the estimates that only used multispectral data. Furthermore, the relationships obtained reached an R coefficient of 0.7 with errors below 10% in canopy cover, which is much better result than the one obtained using data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), also onboard Terra, for the same variable. Finally we estimated the canopy cover and the effective height of the vegetation for 700,000 hectares in the province of Murcia, with a spatial resolution of 1,100 m. The results show a relationship between the spectral and the multi-angle data, and provide estimates of the canopy cover with a Spearman’s coefficient of 0.8 in the case of the vegetation canopy cover, and 0.4 in the case of the effective height. The estimates of both variables using neural networks and various combinations of data, yield results with an R coefficient greater than 0.85 for the case of the canopy cover, and 0.6 for the effective height. Multi-angle parameters provided in the products made from MISR at 1,100 m pixel size, did not produce good results from themselves but improved the results when included to the spectral information. The mean square errors were less than 0.016 for the canopy cover, and 0.7 m for the effective height. Geographically weighted regressions also showed that locally we can have even better results, especially when there is high spatial variability of estimated variables. In summary, the use of the data provided by MISR offers a promising way of improving remote sensing performance in the low-medium spatial resolution, both for image classification and for the estimation of quantitative variables of the vegetation structure.

Desde finales del siglo pasado, el procesamiento y análisis de imágenes digitales, se ha convertido en una poderosa herramienta para la investigación de las propiedades del suelo a múltiples resoluciones, sin embargo todavía no existen los mejores resultados en cuanto a estos trabajos. El principal problema para investigar el drenaje vertical a partir de la distribución de humedad en un perfil de vertisol es la búsqueda de métodos factibles que usen este procedimiento. El objetivo general es implementar una metodología para el procesamiento y análisis de imágenes digitales, que permita caracterizar la distribución del contenido de humedad de un perfil de vertisol. Para el estudio, doce calicatas fueron excavadas en un Mazic Pellic Vertisol, seis de ellas en mayo 13/2011 y el resto en mayo 19/2011 después de moderados eventos de lluvia. Las imágenes RGB de los perfiles fueron tomadas con una cámara Kodak™; con tamaños seleccionados de 1600 x 945 píxeles cada una fue procesada para homogeneizar el brillo y se aplicaron filtros suavizadores de diferentes tamaños de ventana, hasta obtener el óptimo. Cada imagen se dividió en sus matrices componentes, seleccionando los umbrales de cada una para ser aplicado y obtener el patrón digital binario. Este último fue analizado a través de la estimación de dos exponentes fractales: dimensión de conteo de cajas (DBC) y dimensión fractal de interfase húmedo seco (Di). Además, fueron determinados tres coeficientes prefractales a la máxima resolución: número total de cajas interceptados en el plano del patrón (A), la lagunaridad fractal (λ1) y la entropía de Shannon (S1). Para todas las imágenes obtenidas, basado en la entropía, los análisis de clúster y de histogramas, el filtro espacial de 9x9 resultó ser el de tamaño de ventana óptimo. Los umbrales fueron seleccionados a partir del carácter bimodal de los histogramas. Los patrones binarios obtenidos mostraron áreas húmedas (blancas) y secas (negras) que permitieron su análisis. Todos los parámetros obtenidos mostraron diferencias significativas entre ambos conjuntos de patrones espaciales. Mientras los exponentes fractales aportan información sobre las características de llenado del patrón de humedad, los coeficientes prefractales representan propiedades del suelo investigado. La lagunaridad fractal fue el mejor discriminador entre los patrones de humedad aparente del suelo. ABSTRACT From last century, digital image processing and analysis was converted in a powerful tool to investigate soil properties at multiple resolutions, however, the best final procedure in these works not yet exist. The main problem to study vertical drainage from the moisture distribution, on a vertisol profile, is searching for suitable methods using these procedures. Our aim was to design a digital image processing methodology and its analysis to characterize the moisture content distribution of a vertisol profile. In this research, twelve soil pits were excavated on a bare Mazic Pellic Vertisol, six of them in May 13/2011 and the rest in May 19/2011 after a moderate rainfall event. Digital RGB images were taken from each vertisol pit using a Kodak™ camera selecting a size of 1600x945 pixels. Each soil image was processed to homogenized brightness and then a spatial filter with several window sizes was applied to select the optimum one. The RGB image obtained were divided in each matrix color selecting the best thresholds for each one, maximum and minimum, to be applied and get a digital binary pattern. La tesis se organiza en un volumen de Memoria integrada por once capítulos que constituyen el cuerpo de la tesis y otro volumen de Apéndices titulado “Caracterización geotécnica de Base de los suelos de España” que reúne en forma de cuadros las características de textura, permeabilidad, humedad-succión, erosionabilidad y resistencia al corte de los cuarenta y dos perfiles de suelos representativos de los tipos del Mapa de suelos De España. Estos cuadros han sido elaborados originalmente por la doctorando durante sus estudios para la obtención del DEA de la Suficiencia Investigadora, excepto los de resistencia al corte que lo han sido también por la doctorando de forma original, pero ya en la etapa de redacción de la tesis. En el Capítulo 1 “Introducción” se describe la motivación, antecedentes, alcance y contenido de la tesis, ordenado según el índice que en él se incluye. Los Capítulos 2 “Meteorización, 3 “Balance Hídrico” y 4 “Humedades características” constituyen el “estado del arte” en el momento actual de los temas de geotecnia ambiental relacionados con la degradación de la superficie terrestre y la estabilidad de taludes. El Capítulo 2, tras matizar algunas generalidades, aporta elementos para la cuantificación de la alteración de rocas como el “índice climático de Weinert” y de la erosión de suelos como la “ecuación universal de pérdida de suelo (U.S.L.E.)” El Capítulo 3, partiendo de los fenómenos de precipitación y evapotranspiración, plantea el balance hídrico en vertientes con instrumentos para evaluar la infiltración y la escorrentía, conceptos imprescindibles para adentrarse en los de resistencia y erosionabilidad del conjunto suelo-agua. En los Apéndices A1 y A2, se recogen valores de coeficientes de infiltración en condiciones saturadas y no saturadas de los perfiles de suelos del Mapa de España. El Capítulo 4 se dedica al estudio de este conjunto suelo-agua con la definición de conceptos que lo caracterizan, basados en la relación entre los contenidos de ambos elementos o “humedad”, sus valores máximos y mínimos y la forma en la que es retenida el agua por el suelo. Este capítulo acaba con el concepto de “Curva característica Suelo-Agua/Soil Water Characteristic curve (SWCC)”, que liga el contenido de agua de un suelo con la tensión a la que está retenida (uauw) “succión” o con su expresión más usual “pF”. En el Apéndice A 3 se adjuntan las SWCC de los perfiles de suelos del Mapa de suelos de España. En el Capítulo 5 “Resistencia al corte de los suelos”, se detalla la influencia que tienen sobre la resistencia de los suelos factores como el paso del tiempo, el contenido de humedad y la presencia y tipo de vegetación en la superficie del suelo estudiado. El Capítulo 6 “Evaluación de la erosión”, analiza el factor de erosionabilidad del suelo “factor K” de la U.S.L.E., su evaluación en función de la textura, estructura y permeabilidad del suelo, con la estimación hecha para los cuarenta y dos perfiles de suelos del Mapa de España, contenida en el Apéndice 4. En el Capítulo 7 “Metodología de diseño” se hacen en su primera parte unas consideraciones geoambientales de diseño aplicables al estudio de los problemas de inestabilidades en taludes. La segunda parte constituye el núcleo de la tesis con la propuesta de “estimación de los parámetros de resistencia al corte del suelo”, consecuente con las teorías y metodología de análisis expuesta en los capítulos anteriores. En el Apéndice A 5 se presentan los valores de los parámetros coulombianos de resistencia al corte, ”c y Ф” estimados según la caracterización climática a partir del índice de Thornthwaite, en condicionesde diseño para humedades naturales máxima y mínima de los cuarenta y dos perfiles de suelos del Mapa de suelos de España. El Capítulo 8 “Aplicación a casos reales” se considera de gran interés al constituir una auténtica continuación de la segunda parte del capítulo anterior, desarrollando la metodología expuesta en él a cuatro problemáticas de infraestructuras de obras lineales, relacionadas con problemas de erosión y deslizamientos en taludes. El Capítulo 9 “Ensayos de referencia” se incluye como punto de apoyo (referencia) a las teorías expuestas, valorando la idoneidad de los tipos de ensayos y tipos de suelos seleccionados (Laboratorio de Geotecnia del CEDEX y Laboratorio Hong-Kong University of Science and Technology), utilizados para la obtención, por correlaciones deducidas, de las curvas SWCC de los perfiles de suelos del Mapa de España, incluídas en el Apéndice A 3, como se ha citado antes. En el Capítulo 10 “Conclusiones y Futuras Líneas de Investigación”se apuntan en primer lugar unas conclusiones que, a juicio de la doctorando, se pueden extraer con interés de esta tesis y a continuación se esbozan unas posibles líneas de investigación, fundamentalmente de tipo experimental, que complementarían los avances derivados de esta tesis o podrían esclarecer y abrir nuevas interpretaciones de los fenómenos naturales de erosión y estabilidad de taludes en los que ésta se ha centrado. Finalmente, en el Capítulo 11 “Bibliografía” se han reunido 328 referencias que reflejan una visión amplia y bastante completa del tema tratado, obtenida complementando las de tesis anteriores sobre esta singular materia (“Efecto estabilizador de la vegetación en taludes”, L Fort 1975 y “Determinación de las características de fricción en el contacto suelo-geotextil a diferentes succiones, mediante equipos de laboratorio singulares”, E Asanza 2009), con propias de la doctorando (9) y las consideradas de mayor interés de los últimos Congresos sobre Suelos no saturados,”Unsat 95”, “Unsat 2002” y “Unsat 2011” entre otros. ABSTRACT The thesis is organized in a volume of Memory composed of eleven chapters that make up the body of the thesis and other Appendices volume entitled "Geotechnical characterization of basis of the soils of Spain" that combines the characteristics of texture, permeability, moisture-suction, erosionability, and shear strength of forty-two profiles of soils representative of the types of the soil of Spain map in the form of pictures. These pictures have been produced originally by the student during their studies to obtain the DEA of the research, except those of the shear strength, also been done by the PhD student in an original way, but already at the stage of drafting of the thesis. Chapter 1 "Introducción" describes the motivation, background, scope and content of the thesis, ordered according to the index that is included. The Chapters: 2 "Weathering, 3 “Water Balance” and 4 “moisture characteristics" are the "State of the art" at the present time of geotechnical environmental issues related to the degradation of the Earth's surface and the slope stability. Chapter 2 after clarify some general information, provides elements for the quantification of the alteration of rocks as "Weinert climate index" and soil erosion as the "universal equation of loss of soil (U.S.L.E.)" Chapter 3, on the basis of the phenomena of precipitation and evapotranspiration, raises the water balance in sheds with instruments to evaluate infiltration and runoff, essential concepts into the resistance and erosionability water-soil joint. Values of soils coefficients of infiltration in saturated and unsaturated conditions from the Spain map of profiles are collected in the Appendices A1 and A2. Chapter 4 is dedicated to the study of this joint “soil-water”, with the definition of concepts that characterize it, based on the relationship between the contents of both elements or “moisture”, their maximum and minimum values and the way in which water is retained by the soil. This chapter ends with the concept of “Soil Water Characteristic curve (SWCC)", which linked the water content of a soil with the stress that it is retained (ua-uw) "suction" or its expression more usual "pF". The SWCC of the profiles of soils of the Spain soils Map are attached in the Appendix 3. In Chapter 5 “Soils shear strength”,is detailed the influence that they have on the resistance of soils factors such as the passage of time, the content of moisture and the presence and type of vegetation on the surface of the studied soil. Chapter 6 "Assessment of erosion", analyses the soil erodibility factor "Kfactor" of the U.S.L.E., its evaluation based on texture, structure and permeability of the soil, with the estimate for forty-two profiles of soils on the Spain Soils Map, contained in Appendix 4. Chapter 7 "Design methodology" some considerations are made in the first part geo-environmental design applicable to the study of the problems of instabilities in slopes. The second part constitutes the core of the thesis with the proposal of “estimation of parameters of shear strength”, of the soils consistent with theories and analytical methodology outlined in the previous chapters. Appendix A 5 presents the values of the coulombians parameters of shear strength, "c and Ф" according to the characterization of climate from the index of Thornthwaite, in design for natural moisture conditions maximum and minimum of forty-two profils of Spain Soils Map Chapter 8 "Application to real cases" is considered of great interest to constitute a true continuation of the second part of the previous chapter, developing the methodology exposed it to four problems of civil-works infrastructure, related to problems of erosion and landslides in slopes. Chapter 9 "Tests of reference" is included as point of support (reference) to the theories exposed, assessing the suitability of the types of tests and types of selected soils (Geotechnical laboratory of CEDEX and laboratory Hongkong University of Science and Technology), used to obtain, by deduced correlations, of curves SWCC of soils profiles on the Spain Soils Map, included in Appendix A. 3, as it was mentioned before. Chapter 10 "Conclusions and future research lines" are running first conclusions which, in the opinion of the candidate, can be extracted with interest of this thesis, and then, it outlines some possible lines of research, mainly experimental, which would complement the advances arising from this thesis or could clarify and open new interpretations of natural phenomena of erosion and slope stability in which it has focused. Finally, in Chapter 11 "Bibliography" 328 references have been included which reflect a broad and fairly comprehensive view of the subject matter, obtained complementing those of the previous theses on this singular issue ("Vegetation stabilizing effect on slopes", L Fort 1975, and "Determination of the characteristics of friction in the contact soil-geotextile to different-suctions, through special laboratory equipment", E Asanza 2009) with some of them from of the candidate (9) and the others from of the considered as the most interesting of recent conferences on unsaturated soils, "Unsat 95", "Unsat2002" and "Unsat 2011" among others.

In this article, a novel method to generate an ultra-wideband (UWB) doublet using the cross-phase modulation (XPM) effect is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The main component of the submitted architecture is a SOA-Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) pumped with a modulated Gaussian pulse. Maximum and minimum conversion points are analyzed through the systems transfer function in order to determinate the most effective operation stage. By tuning different values for the SOAs currents, it is possible to identify a conversion step in which the input pulse is enough large to saturate the SOAMZI, leading to the generation of a UWB doublet pulse.

The main problem to study vertical drainage from the moisture distribution, on a vertisol profile, is searching for suitable methods using these procedures. Our aim was to design a digital image processing methodology and its analysis to characterize the moisture content distribution of a vertisol profile. In this research, twelve soil pits were excavated on a ba re Mazic Pellic Vertisols ix of them in May 13/2011 and the rest in May 19 /2011 after a moderate rainfall event. Digital RGB images were taken from each vertisol pit using a Kodak? camera selecting a size of 1600x945 pixels. Each soil image was processed to homogenized brightness and then a spatial filter with several window sizes was applied to select the optimum one. The RGB image obtained were divided in each matrix color selecting the best thresholds for each one, maximum and minimum, to be applied and get a digital binary pattern. This one was analyzed by estimating two fractal scaling exponents box counting dimension D BC) and interface fractal dimension (D) In addition, three pre-fractal scaling coefficients were determinate at maximum resolution: total number of boxes intercepting the foreground pattern (A), fractal lacunarity (?1) and Shannon entropy S1). For all the images processed the spatial filter 9x9 was the optimum based on entropy, cluster and histogram criteria. Thresholds for each color were selected based on bimodal histograms.

El objeto de la investigación es analizar la situación de las plataformas logísticas y caracterizar las mismas, sus áreas funcionales y los parámetros de diseño que se utilizan para su planificación y desarrollo. La investigación se ha realizado sobre las plataformas logísticas existentes en España, si bien se ha contrastado la situación nacional con otras experiencias internacionales. Para ello se ha procedido al estudio del estado del arte a nivel internacional, determinando la terminología, caracterización y clasificación que aporta la comunidad científica al respecto sobre las plataformas logísticas. La investigación se ha centrado en el estudio de un elevado número de plataformas logísticas ubicadas en distintas Comunidades Autónomas, que representan en torno al cuarenta por ciento de las que se encuentran en estos momentos en activo, analizando sus datos básicos, su clasificación en lo que respecta a su grado de centralidad, su intermodalidad, su accesibilidad, y la información urbanística relativa a superficies de áreas funcionales, edificabilidades, usos principales, complementarios y no admitidos, red viaria, zonas verdes, y parámetros máximos y mínimos de ordenación. El análisis, valoración e interpretación de los resultados obtenidos, ha permitido concluir en la heterogeneidad existente sobre el término, proponiéndose por parte del autor un nuevo concepto que englobe y defina de forma genérica pero clara la tipología de plataformas logísticas presentes en el panorama nacional. Del mismo modo, y como consecuencia de la investigación realizada, ha sido posible la caracterización de una “plataforma logística tipo”, estableciendo unos parámetros de diseño estándar para desarrollos posteriores. Finalmente se proponen varias líneas de investigación. En primer lugar, analizar el conjunto del transporte de mercancías, para determinar y valorar su desequilibrio, para de este modo potenciar la intermodalidad e internacionalizar la misma; y, en segundo lugar, establecer una regulación global de las competencias y legislación en materia de planificación de centros logísticos, para racionalizar el desarrollo de estos elementos. The aim of this research is to analyze the situation of logistics platforms and to characterize them, their functional areas and the design parameters that are used in their planning and development. This study was conducted on logistics platforms in Spain, although the situation in Spain has been compared to other international experiences. For this purpose, the international state-of-the-art has been examined, determining the terminology, characterization and classification provided by the scientific community in regard to logistics platforms. The research focuses on the study of a large number of logistics platforms located in different Autonomous Regions, representing approximately 40% of those currently in operation. An analysis has been made of the fundamental data, classification in regard to the degree of centrality, intermodality, accessibility and the urban planning information relating to functional area spaces, as well as buildable potential, main, complementary and prohibited uses, the road network, green zones and maximum and minimum development planning parameters. The analysis, evaluation and interpretation of the results obtained has led to the conclusion of the heterogeneous nature of the term, and the author proposes a new concept that would cover and define, in a generic yet clear way, the typology of logistics platforms present in the national scenario. In a similar manner, and as a result of the research conducted, it has been possible to define a “logistics platform type”, establishing standard design parameters for future developments. Lastly, various lines of research are proposed. In the first place, to analyze overall goods transport to determine and evaluate its imbalances and, in this way, to promote its intermodality and internationalization. In the second place, to establish a global regulation of competencies and legislation with regard to the planning of logistics centers, to rationalize the development of these elements.

La marcha humana es el mecanismo de locomoción por el cual el cuerpo humano se traslada en línea recta gracias a una serie de movimientos coordinados de la pelvis y de las articulaciones del miembro inferior. Frecuentemente se encuentra influenciada por factores biomecánicos, anatómicos o patologías del sistema neuromusculoesquelético que modifican la forma de caminar de cada individuo. La lesión de médula espinal es una de las patologías que afectan el desarrollo normal de los patrones de la marcha por alteración de la movilidad, de la sensibilidad o del sistema nervioso autónomo. Aunque la lesión medular afecta otras funciones, además de la pérdida de función motora y sensorial, la recuperación de la capacidad de caminar es la mayor prioridad identificada por los pacientes durante la rehabilitación. Por ello, el desarrollo de dispositivos que faciliten la rehabilitación o compensación de la marcha es uno de los principales objetivos de diferentes grupos de investigación y empresas. En el contexto del proyecto Hybrid Technological Platform for Rehabilitation, Functional Compensation and Training of Gait in Spinal Cord Injury Patients se ha desarrollado un dispositivo que combina una órtesis activa (exoesqueleto) y un andador motorizado. Este sistema, como otros dispositivos, tiene el movimiento humano como estándar de referencia, no obstante no se evalúa de manera habitual, cómo es el patrón de la marcha reproducido y su similitud o diferencias con la marcha humana, o las modificaciones o adaptaciones en la interacción con el cuerpo del paciente. El presente estudio trata de examinar las características de la marcha normal en diversos grupos de población, y las diferencias con el patrón de marcha lenta. Finalmente, se pretende evaluar qué modificaciones y adaptaciones sufre el patrón de marcha lenta teórico al ser reproducido por el exoesqueleto. La presente investigación consiste en un estudio cuantitativo transversal desarrollado en dos etapas: estudio 1 y estudio 2. En el estudio 1 se analizó el patrón de la marcha a velocidad libremente seleccionada (normal) y el patrón de la marcha a velocidad lenta (0.25m/s) en 62 sujetos distribuidos en grupos considerando el sexo y los percentiles 25, 50 y 75 de estatura de la población española. Durante el estudio 2 se analizó el patrón de la marcha lenta reproducido por el dispositivo Hybrid a diferentes porcentajes de peso corporal (30%, 50% y 70%) en diez sujetos seleccionados aleatoriamente de la muestra del estudio 1. En ambos estudios se obtuvieron variables espacio-temporales y cinemáticas mediante un sistema de captura de movimiento con 6 cámaras distribuidas a lo largo de un pasillo de marcha. Se calcularon las medias, las desviaciones estándar y el 95% de intervalo de confianza, y el nivel alfa de significación se estableció en α=0.05 para todas las pruebas estadísticas. Las principales diferencias en el patrón normal de la marcha se encontraron en los parámetros cinemáticos de hombres y mujeres, aunque también se presentaron diferencias entre los grupos en función de la estatura. Las mujeres mostraron mayor flexión de cadera y rodilla, y mayor extensión de tobillo que los hombres durante el ciclo normal, aunque la basculación lateral de la pelvis, mayor en las mujeres, y el desplazamiento lateral del centro de gravedad, mayor en los hombres, fueron los parámetros identificados como principales discriminantes entre sexos. La disminución de la velocidad de la marcha mostró similares adaptaciones y modificaciones en hombres y en mujeres, presentándose un aumento de la fase de apoyo y una disminución de la fase de oscilación, un retraso de los máximos y mínimos de flexoextensión de cadera, rodilla y tobillo, y una disminución del rango articular en las tres articulaciones. Asimismo, la basculación lateral de la pelvis y el movimiento vertical del centro de gravedad disminuyeron, mientras que el movimiento lateral del centro de gravedad y el ancho de paso aumentaron. Durante la evaluación del patrón de la marcha reproducido por el exoesqueleto se observó que las tres articulaciones del miembro inferior disminuían el rango de movimiento por la falta de fuerza de los motores para contrarrestar el peso corporal, incluso con un 70% de descarga de peso. Además, la transferencia de peso se encontró limitada por la falta de movimiento de la pelvis en el plano frontal y se sustituyó por un aumento de la inclinación del tronco y, por tanto, del movimiento lateral del centro de gravedad. Este hecho, junto al aumento del desplazamiento vertical del centro de gravedad, hizo del patrón de la marcha reproducido por el exoesqueleto un movimiento poco eficiente. En conclusión, se establecen patrones de marcha normal diferenciados por sexos, siendo la basculación lateral de la pelvis y el movimiento lateral del centro de gravedad los parámetros discriminantes más característicos entre sexos. Comparando la marcha a velocidad libremente seleccionada y la velocidad lenta, se concluye que ambos sexos utilizan estrategias similares para adaptar el patrón de la marcha a una velocidad lenta y se mantienen las características diferenciadoras entre hombres y mujeres. En relación a la evaluación del dispositivo Hybrid, se deduce que la falta de movimiento lateral de la pelvis condiciona la transferencia de peso y el aumento del rango de movimiento del centro de gravedad y, en consecuencia, tiene como resultado un patrón de la marcha poco eficiente. Este patrón no resultaría indicado para los procesos de rehabilitación o recuperación de la marcha, aunque podría considerarse adecuado para la compensación funcional de la bipedestación y la locomoción. ABSTRACT The human walking is a means of moving body forward using a repetitious and coordinated sequence of pelvis and lower limb motions. It is frequently influenced by biomechanical and anatomical factors or by musculoskeletal pathologies which modify the way of walking. The spinal injury is one of those pathologies which affect the normal pattern of walking, due to the alteration of the mobility, the sensory or the autonomic nervous system. Although the spinal injury affects many other body functions, apart from the motor and sensory ones, the main priority for patients is to recover the ability of walking. Consequently, the main objective of many research groups and private companies is the development of rehabilitation and compensation devices for walking. In this context, the Hybrid Technological Platform for Rehabilitation, Functional Compensation and Training of Gait in Spinal Cord Injury Patients project has developed a device which integrates an exoskeleton and a motorized smart walker. This system, as other similar devices, has the human movement as standard reference. Nevertheless, these devices are not usually evaluated on the way they reproduce the normal human pattern or on the modifications and in the interactions with the patient’s body. The aim of the present study is to examine the normal walking characteristics, to analyze the differences between self-selected and low speed walking patterns, and to evaluate the modifications and adaptations of walking pattern when it is reproduced by the exoskeleton. The present research is a quantitative cross-sectional study carried out in two phases: study 1 and study 2. During the study 1, the self-selected and the low speed (0.25m/s) walking patterns were analyzed in sixty-two people distributed in groups, according to sex and 25th, 50th and 75th percentiles of height for Spanish population. The study 2 analyzed the low speed walking pattern reproduced by the Hybrid system in three conditions: 30%, 50% and 70% of body weight support. To do this, ten subjects were randomly selected and analyzed from the people of study 1. An optoelectronic system with six cameras was used to obtain spatial, temporal and kinematic parameters in both studies. Means, standard deviations and 95% confidence intervals of the study were calculated. The alpha level of significance was set at α=0.05 for all statistical tests. The main differences in normal gait pattern were found in kinematic parameters between men and women. The hip and the knee were more flexed and the ankle plantar flexion was higher in women than in men during normal gait cycle. Although the greater pelvic obliquity of women and the higher lateral movement of center of gravity of men were the most relevant discriminators between male and female gait patterns. Comparing self-selected and low speed walking patterns, both sexes showed similar adaptations and modifications. At low speed walking, men and women increased the stance phase ratio and decreased the swing phase ratio. The maximum and minimum peak flexion of hip, knee and ankle appeared after and the range of motion of them decreased during low speed walking. Furthermore, the pelvic obliquity and the vertical movement of the center of gravity decreased, whereas the lateral movement of center of gravity and step width increased. Evaluating the gait pattern reproduced by the exoskeleton, a decrease of lower limb range of motion was observed. This was probably due to the lack of strength of the engines, which were not able to control the body weight, even with the 70% supported. Moreover, the weight transfer from one limb to the contralateral side was restricted due to the lack of pelvis obliquity. This movement deficiency was replaced by the lateral torso sway and, consequently, the increase of lateral movement of the center of gravity. This fact, as well as the increase of the vertical displacement of the center of gravity, made inefficient the gait pattern reproduced by the exoskeleton. In conclusion, different gait patterns of both sexes have been determined, being pelvis obliquity and lateral movement of center of gravity the most relevant discriminators between male and female gait patterns. Comparing self-selected and low speed walking patterns, it was concluded that both sexes use similar strategies for adapting the gait pattern to a low speed, and therefore, the differentiating characteristics of normal gait are maintained. Regarding the Hybrid system evaluation, it was determined that the gait pattern reproduced by the exoskeleton is inefficient. This was due to the lack of pelvis obliquity and the increase of the center of gravity displacement. Consequently, whereas the walking pattern reproduced by the exoskeleton would not be appropriated for the rehabilitation process, it could be considered suitable for functional compensation of walking and standing.

Two short time intervals centered at 2.3 and 4.7 Ma were studied to investigate short-term variations in surface-ocean processes as indicated by changes in the radiolarian microfossil population. These time intervals represent two different settings of late Neogene climate. The older interval represents a time when tropical circulation between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans was not blocked by the Isthmus of Panama, whereas the younger interval represents a time when Northern Hemisphere glaciation was present but did not display the dominance of the 100,000-yr cycle that characterizes the late Pleistocene. The younger time slice at 2.3 Ma was sampled at all Leg 138 sites except Site 844, where significant reworking was evident. All sites except 844, 853, and 854 were sampled for the older time slice. Samples were taken at 10- to 20-cm intervals at each site and spanned a GRAPE density maximum and minimum. Thus, it was possible to investigate whether the changes in carbonate content (as indicated by GRAPE density) were associated with changes in surface-ocean conditions (indicated by radiolarian assemblage variations). For both time slices, the radiolarian data indicate that intervals of decreased carbonate content are periods of cooler water conditions and possibly enhanced biogenic production. Times of increased carbonate content are associated with inferred warmer oceanographic conditions, as indicated by the dominance of tropical assemblages at 2.3 Ma and tropical and western Pacific assemblages during the time slice centered at 4.8 Ma. However, the spatial patterns of change during each time slice show a distinct difference in the mapped patterns of radiolarian assemblage dominance. The older time slice, representing a period before the closing of the Isthmus of Panama, shows more zonal patterns presumably associated with a more zonal character of equatorial circulation. After the closing of the isthmus, the shifts in faunal patterns between times of high and low carbonates are characterized by shifts in the dominance of the tropical and transitional assemblages, respectively, throughout the region.

This study used paleobathymetric interpretations from benthic foraminiferal assemblages to determine the timing of the initial subduction of the Cocos Ridge beneath the Costa Rica-Panama Arc and the associated amount of uplift. Forty-seven samples from four stratigraphic sections of the Burica and the Armuelles formations yielded 217 identified species. Foraminiferal paleoecology and cluster analyses indicated paleobathymetric differences within and between the sections. Maximum and minimum uplift rates were calculated from the biochronology, elevation, paleobathymetry and estimated eustatic changes. Large decreases in paleobathymetry were mainly due to the initial middle Pleistocene subduction of the Cocos Ridge in less than 0.5 Ma. Uplift rates were uneven across the Burica Peninsula, as follows: La Vaca 4.5–0.8 m/ky, Rabo de Puerco 2.8–0.7 m/ky, San Bartolo–Chiquito 2.7–0.8 m/ky, and eastern coast 8.0–1.5 m/ky. These differences probably resulted from Cocos Ridge asymmetry and differential uplift of tectonic blocks.

The trophic ecology studies issues related to the diet of individuals within a community .The relation between the body size of the predator and the prey size, individual specialization and niche breadth are some of the issues that can be discussed by it .I collected the lizards using pitfall trap, glue and active collecting traps in a fragment of Caatinga. The most common species in this community were Tropidurus hispidus, T. semitaeniatus and Cnemidophorus ocellifer. The visits to the farm also relied on collecting invertebrates at each season to understand how the nutritional resources of lizards were presented in each one of them. I tried to answer some questions : 1) If there was a positive relation between body size of the predator and the size of prey of the community ; 2) If in different seasons the relation of body size of the predator and the maximum and/or minimum size of the prey would be positive ; 3) If species with different foraging strategies have positive relation on the size of the predatorprey relation; 4) If the seasonality would influence on the individual expertise of lizards community and more common species; 5) If the breadth of the niche would be influenced by seasonality ; 6) If more individuals with different morphology between them would present less similar diet. I found that there was indeed a positive relationship between size of prey and predator, but nonexistent related to the minimum size of prey; Among the seasons relative size of predators and prey was different for the maximum and minimum size, but was positively related only to the size of the maximum prey. And comparisons between different foraging strategies had the maximum and minimum line inclination greater than zero and different from each other; individual specialization was not influenced by seasonality and the niche breadth was wider in the dry season only to T. semitaeniatus. At last I didn't find a significant negative relationship between morphological dissimilarity and similarity of diet.

The Ionospheric Disturbances – TIDs – are irregularities on the ionospheric plasma propagating in speeds in the order of tens to a few hundreds of meters per second. This present study detected and characterized the TIDs of LSTIDs (Large Scale Travelling Ionospheric Disturbance) type at low latitudes during intense geomagnetic storms and its propagation over the Brazilian sector. This work also shows as being the first to report systematically propagation of gravity waves over Natal. For this purpose, we used ionospheric records obtained from type of digisonde CADI (Canadiam Advanced Digital Ionosonde) located in Natal and the type DSP (Digisonde Portable Souder) located in Cachoeira Paulista, Fortaleza and São Luis, whereupon we used a dataset of 12 years collected by INPE (National Institute of Space Research). In this study, both calm days, that preceded the storms, and the geomagnetically disturbed days were related during the years 2000 and 1012, which cover a period of maximum and minimum solar activity. And it is presented the variations that happened in the electron density from region F of the ionosphere over the Brazilian sector, especially near the Equator (Natal, Fortaleza and São Luis), caused by ionospheric disturbances in the equatorial region during intense geomagnetic storms, because, as we know of the literature in this area, this phenomenon contributes positively to the emergence of LSTIDs in the auroral region, which may move to the equatorial region where a few cases have been documented and studied systematically. From the observation of signatures if TIDs in ionogram records, a study of the morphology of these events was performed and compared with the main characteristics of the wave of this phenomenon during great magnetic storms, i.e., DST <(-200 nT) and KP > 6. Thus, we obtained the main characteristics of TIDs over our region, i.e., period, vertical wavelength, phase and propagation speed, as well as the delay of these disturbances compared to the beginning of the magnetic storms to the Brazilian Sector.

The nursing staff is now the largest contingent of professionals in healthcare environments, with more than 1.8 million professionals, and of these 15% are men, showing a masculinization of the historical profession and culturally conceived and carried out by women (COFEN / FIOCRUZ, 2013). This dissertation discusses the profession forward to some issues related to gender, quality of life and night work. Objective: To analyze the impact that shift work has the professional quality of life male, through a specific instrument to identify the main problems and joint damage to that front group to his professional activity. Methods: descriptivo, Cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, performed with 72 professional male nursing staff, 41 (56.9%) nursing technicians, 18 (25%) of nursing assistants and 13 (18.1%) of nurses, in January 2015 in a university hospital in the city of Uberlândia (Minas Gerais). For this, we used the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire. Quantitative variables were described as mean, standard deviation, maximum and minimum, in addition to the Shapiro-Wilk test and Kruskal-Wallis used in the data analysis, with a confidence level of 5% (p <0.05). Results: the profile of respondents, most are married 42 (58.3%) under the employment contract via Single Legal Regime 50 (69.4%) with mean age of 40 and having 16 years of service; and within a range of 0 to 100, the areas with better evaluation were the Social Relations (70.1) and psychological (67.5); already the worst were the Environment (57.4) and Physical (65.4). In the overall assessment, the average was 63.3 and staying below the national average (65-70). Thus, the professionals who were married obtained better scores, regardless of the category which is in the nursing team. Conclusions: The group is average, taking into account the standard deviation, but we can say that working conditions affect their profession, and these results allow the detection of the difficulties experienced by men of the nursing team, and can cooperate with the design strategies that benefit or minimize the search for conflicts that affect the health of these workers and their quality of life.
