A conceptual device for the direct conversion of heat into electricity is presented. This concept hybridizes thermionic (TI) and thermophotovoltaic (TPV) energy conversion in a single thermionic-photovoltaic (TIPV) solid-state device. This device transforms into electricity both the electron and photon fluxes emitted by an incandescent surface. This letter presents an idealized analysis of this device in order to determine its theoretical potential. According to this analysis, the key advantage of this converter, with respect to either TPV or TI, is the higher power density in an extended temperature range. For low temperatures, TIPV performs like TPV due to the negligible electron flux. On the contrary, for high temperatures, TIPV performs like TI due to the great enhancement of the electron flux, which overshadows the photon flux contribution. At the intermediate temperatures, 1650K in the case of this particular study, I show that the power density potential of TIPV converter is twice as great as that of TPV and TI. The greatest impact concerns applications in which the temperature varies in a relatively wide range, for which averaged power density enhancement above 500% is attainable. Se va a realizar un estudio de la codificación de imágenes sobre el estándar HEVC (high-effiency video coding). El proyecto se va a centrar en el codificador híbrido, más concretamente sobre la aplicación de la transformada inversa del coseno que se realiza tanto en codificador como en el descodificador. La necesidad de codificar vídeo surge por la aparición de la secuencia de imágenes como señales digitales. El problema principal que tiene el vídeo es la cantidad de bits que aparecen al realizar la codificación. Como consecuencia del aumento de la calidad de las imágenes, se produce un crecimiento exponencial de la cantidad de información a codificar. La utilización de las transformadas al procesamiento digital de imágenes ha aumentado a lo largo de los años. La transformada inversa del coseno se ha convertido en el método más utilizado en el campo de la codificación de imágenes y video. Las ventajas de la transformada inversa del coseno permiten obtener altos índices de compresión a muy bajo coste. La teoría de las transformadas ha mejorado el procesamiento de imágenes. En la codificación por transformada, una imagen se divide en bloques y se identifica cada imagen a un conjunto de coeficientes. Esta codificación se aprovecha de las dependencias estadísticas de las imágenes para reducir la cantidad de datos. El proyecto realiza un estudio de la evolución a lo largo de los años de los distintos estándares de codificación de video. Se analiza el codificador híbrido con más profundidad así como el estándar HEVC. El objetivo final que busca este proyecto fin de carrera es la realización del núcleo de un procesador específico para la ejecución de la transformada inversa del coseno en un descodificador de vídeo compatible con el estándar HEVC. Es objetivo se logra siguiendo una serie de etapas, en las que se va añadiendo requisitos. Este sistema permite al diseñador hardware ir adquiriendo una experiencia y un conocimiento más profundo de la arquitectura final. ABSTRACT. A study about the codification of images based on the standard HEVC (high-efficiency video coding) will be developed. The project will be based on the hybrid encoder, in particular, on the application of the inverse cosine transform, which is used for the encoder as well as for the decoder. The necessity of encoding video arises because of the appearance of the sequence of images as digital signals. The main problem that video faces is the amount of bits that appear when making the codification. As a consequence of the increase of the quality of the images, an exponential growth on the quantity of information that should be encoded happens. The usage of transforms to the digital processing of images has increased along the years. The inverse cosine transform has become the most used method in the field of codification of images and video. The advantages of the inverse cosine transform allow to obtain high levels of comprehension at a very low price. The theory of the transforms has improved the processing of images. In the codification by transform, an image is divided in blocks and each image is identified to a set of coefficients. This codification takes advantage of the statistic dependence of the images to reduce the amount of data. The project develops a study of the evolution along the years of the different standards in video codification. In addition, the hybrid encoder and the standard HEVC are analyzed more in depth. The final objective of this end of degree project is the realization of the nucleus from a specific processor for the execution of the inverse cosine transform in a decoder of video that is compatible with the standard HEVC. This objective is reached following a series of stages, in which requirements are added. This system allows the hardware designer to acquire a deeper experience and knowledge of the final architecture.

Nuestra investigación se centra en el estudio de los “ámbitos o espacios intermedios” en momentos de la arquitectura contemporánea, en un período de transición entre finales de los años 80 y nuestros días. Pretendemos analizar cómo se presenta el ámbito intermedio en el objeto o lugar arquitectónico y su función o relación con el entorno cercano, desde el proyecto hasta su repercusión en la experiencia vivida. 2. El concepto de intermedio entendido como ámbito o espacio intersticial, fronterizo y ambivalente (o multivalente), atraviesa en la presente investigación el campo de la etimología, de la ciencia, del pensamiento y del arte, para detenerse en la arquitectura actual, llevándose a cabo una indagación concreta en el proceso de concepción, en la propuesta formal, espacial y funcional, así como en la percepción y demás experiencias o vivencias en el lugar arquitectónico. 3. En primer lugar nos proponemos estudiar y explorar el concepto de “intermedio” en sus características, funciones y ubicaciones dentro de la cultura contemporánea, detectando sus antecedentes culturales más importantes, para a continuación aplicarlo reflexivamente a obras significativas de arquitectura. La investigación se enfoca en la modalidad figural (imprecisa) de lo intermedio (en alusión al “figural” deleuziano), cuyas metáforas base son lo translúcido, la penumbra y la espuma, vinculadas al actual paradigma cultural de la complejidad (C. Jencks). A continuación se analizan las relaciones o implicaciones de dicha modalidad figural en obras de arquitectos como Eisenman, Holl, Tschumi, Ito, Fujimoto, Van Berkel y Bos, y Siza, comprobando su valor operativo y poniendo de manifiesto su sentido e importancia en la actualidad y en la disciplina. El estudio tiene como trasfondo el concepto de in-between de la obra de Eisenman, y utiliza conceptos de la filosofía del límite de Trías como algunos de sus principales fundamentos. 4. En cada una de las obras de arquitectura presentadas esta modalidad imprecisa se traduce en un ámbito o espacio intermedio figural específico. Son obras en las que real y virtual, matricial y objetual, arquitectura y territorio, existente y nuevo, colectivo e individual, social e íntimo, interior y exterior, y demás usos y funciones se entrelazan o funden. Son arquitecturas cuya geometría ya no se encuentra tan determinada por aspectos bi o tridimensionales del dibujo o de la construcción. A través de la manipulación de estas geometrías más o menos complejas, dinámicas e intersticiales, estas obras reflejan (o intuyen) las premisas del actual Zeitgeist: un cambio de esquemas de objetos a relaciones basado en un pensamiento más holístico, transdisciplinar, sistémico o complejo (E. Morin), y una nueva conciencia colectiva sobre la realidad que anuncia la crisis de la percepción, el cambio de paradigma y nuevos valores (F. Capra). Emerge otra forma de sentir y percibir el mundo, los lugares y los espacios, que poco a poco está cambiando el modo de pensar y dibujar la arquitectura, y consecuentemente de interaccionar con ella. 5. El sentido del espacio intermedio figural, emerge en las cada vez más complejas cualidades morfológico-espaciales y funcionales de una parte importante de la arquitectura actual. Arquitectura, geometría y tecnología informática están más entrelazadas que nunca, y de un modo más libre, para así poder indagar en nuevas formas de pensar y crear lugares en que los “espacios intermedios” que investigamos son un testimonio. El espacio arquitectónico se vuelve afectivo e interactivo, un lugar intermedio figural, formalizado por espacialidades intersticiales que parecen aludir a lo líquido, donde la forma es más matriz que configuración, el espacio más espacialidad que compartimiento, la función más versátil y multivalente que específica o autónoma, y la perplejidad, la imaginación y la evocación se entrecruzan y vuelven patentes. 6. La arquitectura de los lugares intermedios valora no solamente el “plano”, la “configuración” y la “transparencia”, sino sobre todo el “espacio” y la “relación” en sus interrelaciones con los usuarios y demás contextos. De la identidad a la relacionalidad, de la representación a la presentación, es una arquitectura que propone “otros espacios” que más que espacios son topografías y espacialidades intersticiales, de tensión, transición, transformación, relación, intercambio e interacción. Son lugares intermedios reales y virtuales, que se sirven tanto de la morfología como de la topología para conquistar nuevas espacialidades, pretendiendo salir de la estricta operación de “forming”/”morphing”/formación/”conformación” para explorar la de “spacing”/espaciamiento. Son lugares que se basan en conceptos como la zona de indiscernibilidad de Deleuze, la imagen- flujo de Buci-Glucksmann, la suspensión-entre de Sloterdijk, o el espacio no-objetivo al que se refiere José Gil, plasmándose en la arquitectura contemporánea como tropos de lo intersticial. 7. Son los lugares intermedios de la arquitectura actual, de espacialidad háptica, más “afectiva”, generativa e interactiva, donde ese ámbito intermedio transforma y es transformado, “afecta”, “con-mueve” (nos hace mover/accionar) y evoca otros lugares, otras posibilidades de espacio habitable u ocupable. Emerge lo intermedio como lugar, algo que anuncia y exhibe, de manera paradigmática y manifiesta, el monumento de Eisenman en Berlín. ABSTRACT 1. Our research focuses on the study of “in-between spaces or environments” at particular times in contemporary architecture, in a transition period from the end of the 1980’s through to today. We aim to analyse how in-between environments are presented in the architectural object or place and their function or their relationship with the nearby surroundings, from the project through to the experience had. 2. In this research, the in-between concept, understood as an interstitial, border and ambivalent (or multi-purpose) environment or space, is assessed from the viewpoint of etymology, science, thought and art, to conclude in current architecture, with specific exploration of the conception process, of the formal, spatial and functional proposal, together with the perception and other experiences in the architectural place. 3. Firstly, we aim to study and explore the “in-between” concept as regards its features, functions and locations within contemporary culture, revealing its most important cultural background, to then apply it reflexively to important works of architecture. The research focuses on the figural (imprecise) mode of in-between (in allusion to Deleuze’s “figural” approach) whose base metaphors are the translucent, semi-darkness and foam, linked to the current cultural paradigm of complexity (C. Jenks). We then go on to assess the relationships or implications of said figural mode in architectural works by Eisenman, Holl, Tschumi, Ito, Fujimoto, Van Berkel and Bos, and Siza, verifying their operational worth and revealing their meaning and importance today and in this discipline. The backdrop of the study is the in-between concept of Eisenman’s work and it also uses concepts from the philosophy of the limit of Trías as its main underpinnings. 4. In each of the architectural works presented, this imprecise mode is translated into a specific in-between environment or space. They are works in which real and virtual, matricial and objectual, architecture and territory, existing and new, collective and individual, social and intimate, interior and exterior and other uses and functions all intertwine or blend together. They are architectures the geometry of which is not so much determined by bi- or tri-dimensional aspects of the drawing or construction. Through the manipulation of these more or less complex, dynamic and interstitial geometries, these works reflect (or insinuate) the premises of the current Zeitgeist: A change in the scheme of objects to relationships towards a more holistic, transdisciplinary, systemic or complex thought (E. Morin), and a new collective conscience about the reality which announces the crisis of perception, the change in paradigm and new values (F. Capra). Another way of feeling and perceiving the world, places and spaces, which little by little is changing the way of thinking and drawing architecture and hence of interacting with it. 5. The meaning of figural in-between space emerges in the increasingly complex, morphological-spatial and functional qualities of a large part of architecture today. Architecture, geometry and computer technology are more than ever intertwined in a freer way to inquire into other ways of thinking and making places, where the “in-between” spaces we research are a testimony. Architectural space becomes affective and interactive, a figural in-between place, formed by interstitial spatiality which seems to allude to something liquid, where shape is more matrix than configuration, space more spatiality than compartment, its function more versatile and multi-purpose than specific or autonomous, and perplexity, imagination and evocation criss-cross each other, becoming obvious. 6. The architecture of in-between places values not only “flat”, “configuration” and “transparency”, but above all “space” and the “relationship” in its interrelations with users and other contexts. From identity to relationality, from representation to presentation, it is an architecture that proposes “other spaces”, which more than spaces are topographies and interstitial spatialities, of tension, transition, transformation, relation, exchange and interaction. They are real and virtual in-between places, that take in both morphology and topology to conquer new spatialities, aiming to depart from the strict “forming”/”morphing” operation in order to explore “spacing”. They are places that derive both from Deleuze’s indiscernibility zone concept, from Buci-Glucksmann´s image-flow concept, from Sloterdijk’s suspension-between, and from the non-objective space referred to by José Gil, and they are embodied in contemporary architecture as tropes of the interstitial. 7. They are the in-between places in architecture today, of haptic spatiality, more “affective”, generative and interactive, where that in-between environment transforms and is transformed, “affects”, “moves” (it makes us move/act) and evokes other places, other possibilities of habitable or occupiable space. The in-between emerges as a place, which paradigmatically and declaredly, Eisenman´s monument in Berlin announces and exhibits. RESUMO 1. A investigação centra-se no estudo dos “âmbitos ou espaços intermédios” em momentos da arquitectura contemporânea, no período de transição entre os finais dos anos 80 e os nossos dias. Pretende-se analisar como se apresenta o âmbito intermédio no objecto ou lugar arquitectónico e sua função ou relação com o meio envolvente, desde o projecto até à sua repercussão na experiencia vivenciada. 2. O conceito de intermédio entendido como âmbito ou espaço intersticial, fronteiriço e ambivalente (ou multivalente), atravessa na presente investigação o campo da etimologia, da ciência, do pensamento e da arte, para deter-se na arquitectura actual, realizando-se uma indagação concreta no processo de concepção, na proposta formal, espacial e funcional, assim como na percepção e demais experiencias ou vivencias no lugar arquitectónico. 3. O consumidor contemporâneo, inserido em um novo ambiente de comunicação, potencializa suas expressões, capaz de avaliar uma marca ou produto e transmitir sua opinião pelas redes sociais, ou seja, o consumidor expressa suas opiniões e desejos dialogando com seus pares de forma espontânea nas redes sociais on-line. É neste ambiente de participação e interação (ciberespaço) que está nosso objeto de estudo, o boca a boca on-line – a voz do consumidor contemporâneo, também conhecido como uma manifestação informativa pessoal ou uma conversa, a opinion sharing. Proporcionado pelos consumidores nas redes sociais on-line, o boca a boca se fortalece em função das possibilidades de interação, característica da sociedade em rede. Nesse cenário, oobjetivo desta pesquisa é caracterizar o boca a boca on-line como um novo fluxo comunicacional entre consumidores, hoje potencializado pelas novas tecnologias da comunicação, capazes de alterar a percepção da marca e demonstrar o uso, pelas marcas, das redes sociais on-line ainda como um ambiente de comunicação unidirecional. Mediante três casos selecionados por conveniência (dois casos nacionais e um internacional), o corpus de análise de nossa pesquisa se limitou aos 5.084 comentários disponibilizados após publicação de matérias jornalísticas no Portal G1 e nas fanpages (Facebook), ambos relativos aos casos selecionados. Com a Análise de Conteúdo dos posts, identificamos e categorizamos a fala do consumidor contemporâneo, sendo assim possível comprovar que as organizações/marcas se valem da cultura do massivo, não dialogando com seus consumidores, pois utilizam as redes sociais on-line ainda de forma unidirecional, além de não darem a devida atenção ao atual fluxo onde se evidencia a opinião compartilhada dos consumidores da sociedade em rede.

In three experiments, electric brain waves of 19 subjects were recorded under several different experimental conditions for two purposes. One was to test how well we could recognize which sentence, from a set of 24 or 48 sentences, was being processed in the cortex. The other was to study the invariance of brain waves between subjects. As in our earlier work, the analysis consisted of averaging over trials to create prototypes and test samples, to both of which Fourier transforms were applied, followed by filtering and an inverse transformation to the time domain. A least-squares criterion of fit between prototypes and test samples was used for classification. In all three experiments, averaging over subjects improved the recognition rates. The most significant finding was the following. When brain waves were averaged separately for two nonoverlapping groups of subjects, one for prototypes and the other for test samples, we were able to recognize correctly 90% of the brain waves generated by 48 different sentences about European geography.

Nitric oxide (NO) biology has focused on the tightly regulated enzymatic mechanism that transforms l-arginine into a family of molecules, which serve both signaling and defense functions. However, very little is known of the pathways that metabolize these molecules or turn off the signals. The paradigm is well exemplified in bacteria where S-nitrosothiols (SNO)—compounds identified with antimicrobial activities of NO synthase—elicit responses that mediate bacterial resistance by unknown mechanisms. Here we show that Escherichia coli possess both constitutive and inducible elements for SNO metabolism. Constitutive enzyme(s) cleave SNO to NO whereas bacterial hemoglobin, a widely distributed flavohemoglobin of poorly understood function, is central to the inducible response. Remarkably, the protein has evolved a novel heme-detoxification mechanism for NO. Specifically, the heme serves a dioxygenase function that produces mainly nitrate. These studies thus provide new insights into SNO and NO metabolism and identify enzymes with reactions that were thought to occur only by chemical means. Our results also emphasize that the reactions of SNO and NO with hemoglobins are evolutionary conserved, but have been adapted for cell-specific function.

In two experiments, electric brain waves of 14 subjects were recorded under several different conditions to study the invariance of brain-wave representations of simple patches of colors and simple visual shapes and their names, the words blue, circle, etc. As in our earlier work, the analysis consisted of averaging over trials to create prototypes and test samples, to both of which Fourier transforms were applied, followed by filtering and an inverse transformation to the time domain. A least-squares criterion of fit between prototypes and test samples was used for classification. The most significant results were these. By averaging over different subjects, as well as trials, we created prototypes from brain waves evoked by simple visual images and test samples from brain waves evoked by auditory or visual words naming the visual images. We correctly recognized from 60% to 75% of the test-sample brain waves. The general conclusion is that simple shapes such as circles and single-color displays generate brain waves surprisingly similar to those generated by their verbal names. These results, taken together with extensive psychological studies of auditory and visual memory, strongly support the solution proposed for visual shapes, by Bishop Berkeley and David Hume in the 18th century, to the long-standing problem of how the mind represents simple abstract ideas.

Electrical and magnetic brain waves of seven subjects under three experimental conditions were recorded for the purpose of recognizing which one of seven words was processed. The analysis consisted of averaging over trials to create prototypes and test samples, to both of which Fourier transforms were applied, followed by filtering and an inverse transformation to the time domain. The filters used were optimal predictive filters, selected for each subject and condition. Recognition rates, based on a least-squares criterion, varied widely, but all but one of 24 were significantly different from chance. The two best were above 90%. These results show that brain waves carry substantial information about the word being processed under experimental conditions of conscious awareness.

Fibroblast growth factors (FGF) 1 and 2 and their tyrosine kinase receptor (FGFR) are present throughout the adult retina. FGFs are potential mitogens, but adult retinal cells are maintained in a nonproliferative state unless the retina is damaged. Our work aims to find a modulator of FGF signaling in normal and pathological retina. We identified and sequenced a truncated FGFR1 form from rat retina generated by the use of selective polyadenylation sites. This 70-kDa form of soluble extracellular FGFR1 (SR1) was distributed mainly localized in the inner nuclear layer of the retina, whereas the full-length FGFR1 form was detected in the retinal Muller glial cells. FGF2 and FGFR1 mRNA levels greatly increased in light-induced retinal degeneration. FGFR1 was detected in the radial fibers of activated retinal Muller glial cells. In contrast, SR1 mRNA synthesis followed a biphasic pattern of down- and up-regulation, and anti-SR1 staining was intense in retinal pigmented epithelial cells. The synthesis of SR1 and FGFR1 specifically and independently regulated in normal and degenerating retina suggests that changes in the proportion of various FGFR forms may control the bioavailability of FGFs and thus their potential as neurotrophic factors. This was demonstrated in vivo during retinal degeneration when recombinant SR1 inhibited the neurotrophic activity of exogenous FGF2 and increased damaging effects of light by inhibiting endogenous FGF. This study highlights the significance of the generation of SR1 in normal and pathological conditions.

In this paper, we give two infinite families of explicit exact formulas that generalize Jacobi’s (1829) 4 and 8 squares identities to 4n2 or 4n(n + 1) squares, respectively, without using cusp forms. Our 24 squares identity leads to a different formula for Ramanujan’s tau function τ(n), when n is odd. These results arise in the setting of Jacobi elliptic functions, Jacobi continued fractions, Hankel or Turánian determinants, Fourier series, Lambert series, inclusion/exclusion, Laplace expansion formula for determinants, and Schur functions. We have also obtained many additional infinite families of identities in this same setting that are analogous to the η-function identities in appendix I of Macdonald’s work [Macdonald, I. G. (1972) Invent. Math. 15, 91–143]. A special case of our methods yields a proof of the two conjectured [Kac, V. G. and Wakimoto, M. (1994) in Progress in Mathematics, eds. Brylinski, J.-L., Brylinski, R., Guillemin, V. & Kac, V. (Birkhäuser Boston, Boston, MA), Vol. 123, pp. 415–456] identities involving representing a positive integer by sums of 4n2 or 4n(n + 1) triangular numbers, respectively. Our 16 and 24 squares identities were originally obtained via multiple basic hypergeometric series, Gustafson’s Cℓ nonterminating 6φ5 summation theorem, and Andrews’ basic hypergeometric series proof of Jacobi’s 4 and 8 squares identities. We have (elsewhere) applied symmetry and Schur function techniques to this original approach to prove the existence of similar infinite families of sums of squares identities for n2 or n(n + 1) squares, respectively. Our sums of more than 8 squares identities are not the same as the formulas of Mathews (1895), Glaisher (1907), Ramanujan (1916), Mordell (1917, 1919), Hardy (1918, 1920), Kac and Wakimoto, and many others.

To elucidate the role of thyroid hormone receptors (TRs) α1 and β in the development of hearing, cochlear functions have been investigated in mice lacking TRα1 or TRβ. TRs are ligand-dependent transcription factors expressed in the developing organ of Corti, and loss of TRβ is known to impair hearing in mice and in humans. Here, TRα1-deficient (TRα1−/−) mice are shown to display a normal auditory-evoked brainstem response, indicating that only TRβ, and not TRα1, is essential for hearing. Because cochlear morphology was normal in TRβ−/− mice, we postulated that TRβ regulates functional rather than morphological development of the cochlea. At the onset of hearing, inner hair cells (IHCs) in wild-type mice express a fast-activating potassium conductance, IK,f, that transforms the immature IHC from a regenerative, spiking pacemaker to a high-frequency signal transmitter. Expression of IK,f was significantly retarded in TRβ−/− mice, whereas the development of the endocochlear potential and other cochlear functions, including mechanoelectrical transduction in hair cells, progressed normally. TRα1−/− mice expressed IK,f normally, in accord with their normal auditory-evoked brainstem response. These results establish that the physiological differentiation of IHCs depends on a TRβ-mediated pathway. When defective, this may contribute to deafness in congenital thyroid diseases.

Agrobacterium tumefaciens is a soil phytopathogen that elicits neoplastic growths on the host plant species. In nature, however, Agrobacterium also may encounter organisms belonging to other kingdoms such as insects and animals that feed on the infected plants. Can Agrobacterium, then, also infect animal cells? Here, we report that Agrobacterium attaches to and genetically transforms several types of human cells. In stably transformed HeLa cells, the integration event occurred at the right border of the tumor-inducing plasmid's transferred-DNA (T-DNA), suggesting bona fide T-DNA transfer and lending support to the notion that Agrobacterium transforms human cells by a mechanism similar to that which it uses for transformation of plants cells. Collectively, our results suggest that Agrobacterium can transport its T-DNA to human cells and integrate it into their genome.

Although neurogenesis in the embryo proceeds in a region- or lineage-specific fashion coincident with neuropeptide expression, a regulatory role for G protein-coupled receptors (GPCR) remains undefined. Pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP) stimulates sympathetic neuroblast proliferation, whereas the peptide inhibits embryonic cortical precursor mitosis. Here, by using ectopic expression strategies, we show that the opposing mitogenic effects of PACAP are determined by expression of PACAP receptor splice isoforms and differential coupling to the phospholipase C (PLC) pathway, as opposed to differences in cellular context. In embryonic day 14 (E14) cortical precursors transfected with the hop receptor variant, but not cells transfected with the short variant, PACAP activates the PLC pathway, increasing intracellular calcium and eliciting translocation of protein kinase C. Ectopic expression of the hop variant in cortical neuroblasts transforms the antimitotic effect of PACAP into a promitogenic signal. Furthermore, PACAP promitogenic effects required PLC pathway function indicated by antagonist U-73122 studies in hop-transfected cortical cells and native sympathetic neuroblasts. These observations highlight the critical role of lineage-specific expression of GPCR variants in determining mitogenic signaling in neural precursors.

The question of whether proteins originate from random sequences of amino acids is addressed. A statistical analysis is performed in terms of blocked and random walk values formed by binary hydrophobic assignments of the amino acids along the protein chains. Theoretical expectations of these variables from random distributions of hydrophobicities are compared with those obtained from functional proteins. The results, which are based upon proteins in the SWISS-PROT data base, convincingly show that the amino acid sequences in proteins differ from what is expected from random sequences in a statistically significant way. By performing Fourier transforms on the random walks, one obtains additional evidence for nonrandomness of the distributions. We have also analyzed results from a synthetic model containing only two amino acid types, hydrophobic and hydrophilic. With reasonable criteria on good folding properties in terms of thermodynamical and kinetic behavior, sequences that fold well are isolated. Performing the same statistical analysis on the sequences that fold well indicates similar deviations from randomness as for the functional proteins. The deviations from randomness can be interpreted as originating from anticorrelations in terms of an Ising spin model for the hydrophobicities. Our results, which differ from some previous investigations using other methods, might have impact on how permissive with respect to sequence specificity protein folding process is-only sequences with nonrandom hydrophobicity distributions fold well. Other distributions give rise to energy landscapes with poor folding properties and hence did not survive the evolution.

To provide a more general method for comparing survival experience, we propose a model that independently scales both hazard and time dimensions. To test the curve shape similarity of two time-dependent hazards, h1(t) and h2(t), we apply the proposed hazard relationship, h12(tKt)/ h1(t) = Kh, to h1. This relationship doubly scales h1 by the constant hazard and time scale factors, Kh and Kt, producing a transformed hazard, h12, with the same underlying curve shape as h1. We optimize the match of h12 to h2 by adjusting Kh and Kt. The corresponding survival relationship S12(tKt) = [S1(t)]KtKh transforms S1 into a new curve S12 of the same underlying shape that can be matched to the original S2. We apply this model to the curves for regional and local breast cancer contained in the National Cancer Institute's End Results Registry (1950-1973). Scaling the original regional curves, h1 and S1 with Kt = 1.769 and Kh = 0.263 produces transformed curves h12 and S12 that display congruence with the respective local curves, h2 and S2. This similarity of curve shapes suggests the application of the more complete curve shapes for regional disease as templates to predict the long-term survival pattern for local disease. By extension, this similarity raises the possibility of scaling early data for clinical trial curves according to templates of registry or previous trial curves, projecting long-term outcomes and reducing costs. The proposed model includes as special cases the widely used proportional hazards (Kt = 1) and accelerated life (KtKh = 1) models.
