Objective: The goal of this investigation was to examine the level of notification of child abuse and neglect and the perceived deterrents to reporting by medical practitioners, who a're mandated to report their suspicions but might choose not to do so. Design: A random sample of medical practitioners was surveyed. About three hundred medical practitioners were approached through the local Division of General Practice. 91 registered medical practitioners in Queensland, Australia, took part in the study. Results: A quarter of medical practitioners admitted failing to report suspicions, though they were mostly cognisant of their responsibility to report suspected cases of abuse and neglect. This Study is the first phase of a three-phase study continuing over three years. Twent)' health professionals from different disciplinary backgrounds (medical doctors, nurses, allied health professionals) and 20 patients across a range of medical condidons, education, gender, and socio-economic backgrounds, pardcipated in one-on-one semi-structured interviews. Participants described their experiences and percepdons of both effecdve and sadsfying medical consultations and dissadsf)'ing and ineffecdve ones. They also discussed their individual goals and needs in the consultation process. Results indicated that while there were some similarides in consultation goals and needs between health professionals, there were also clear differences across the different discipUnes. In addition, there were clear differences in goals and needs across the twenty padents. These findings are discussed within the framework of communicadon accommodadon theor}' (CAT) and the linguisdc model of padent pardcipadon (LMOPP) and focus on understanding the different dynamics that underpin varying health professional and padent interacdons.

Revascularization (RVS) of scar segts does not lead to recovery of left ventricular (LV) function, but its effect on post-infarct remodeling is unclear. We examined the impact of RVS on regional remodeling in different transmural extents of scar (TME). Dobutamine echo (DbE) and contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (ce- MRI) were performed in 72 pts post MI (age 63±10, EF 49±12%). Pts were selected for RVS (n = 31) or medical treatment (n = 41). Segts were classified as scar if there were no contractile reserve during lowdose DbE.TMEwas measured by ce-MRI; a cutoff of 75% was used to differentiate transmural (TM) from non-transmural (NT) scars. Regional end systolic (ESV) and end diastolic volumes (EDV) were measured at baseline and 12 months follow up.Of 218 segts identified as scar on DbE, 164wereNTand 54 were TM on ce-MRI. Revascularization was performed to 62 NT and 11 TM segts. In the RVS group, there was reverse remodeling with significant reduction in LV volumes in NT (ESV, 6.8±3.2 ml versus 5.8±3.7 ml, p = 0.002; EDV, 10.9±4.9 ml versus 9.8±5.6 ml, p = 0.02), but no significant change in volumes in TM (ESV, 6.9±3.7 ml versus 5.4±2.1 ml, p = 0.09; EDV, 10.2±4.4 ml versus 9.4±4.3 ml, p = 0.5). In the medically treated group, there were no changes in LV volumes in both NT (ESV, 12.0±11.9 ml versus 12.7±13.8 ml, p = 0.3; EDV, 12.5±7.8 ml versus 12.6±9.7 ml, p = 0.8) and TM (ESV, 8.0±3.8 ml versus 7.9±4.6 ml, p = 0.8; EDV, 10.3±4.8 ml versus 10.4±5.4 ml, p = 0.9). Despite absence of contractile reserve on DbE, NT benefit from coronary revascularization with regional reverse LV remodeling.

The research set out to test three main hypotheses derived from a summary of literature relevant to the use of audiometry in industry. These hypotheses were: (1) performing audiometry increases the probability that hearing protectors, once issued, will be worn; (2) audiometry is considered by workers to be evidence of their employer's concern for their welfare; (3) audiometry is associated with common law claims by workers against employers for alleged occupational deafness. Six subsidiary hypotheses were also developed. Four methods of data collection were used: (1) attitude questionnaires were administered to samples of workers drawn from an industrial company performing audiometry and two industrial companies not performing audiometry; (2) a postal questionnaire was sent out to industrial medical officers; (3) surveys were undertaken to assess the proportion of the workforce in each of eight industrial companies that was wearing personal hearing protectors that had been provided; (4) structured interviews were carried out with relevant management level personnel in each of five industrial companies. Factor analysis was the main statistical analytic technique used. The data supported all three main hypotheses. Audiometry was also examined as an example of medical screening procedure. It was argued that the validation of medical screening procedures requires the satisfaction of attitudinal or motivational validation criteria in addition to the biological and economic criteria currently used. It was concluded that industrial audiometry failed to satisfy such attitudinal or motivational criteria and so should not be part of a programme of screening for occupational deafness. It was also concluded that industrial audiometry may be useful in creating awareness, amongst workers, of occupational deafness. It was argued that the only profitable approach to investigating the role of audiometry in preventing occupational deafness is to study the attitudes and perceptions of everyone involved.

The paper is a description of information and software content of a computer knowledge bank on medical diagnostics. The classes of its users and the tasks which they can solve are described. The information content of the bank contains three ontologies: an ontology of observations in the field of medical diagnostics, an ontology of knowledge base (diseases) in medical diagnostics and an ontology of case records, and also it contains three classes of information resources for every division of medicine – observation bases, knowledge bases, and data bases (with data about patients), that correspond to these ontologies. Software content consists of editors for information of different kinds (ontologies, bases of observations, knowledge and data), and also of a program which performs medical diagnostics.

The quarter century since the foundation of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists has coincided with immense change in the subspecialty of medical retina, which has moved from being the province of a few dedicated enthusiasts to being an integral, core part of ophthalmology in every eye department. In age-related macular degeneration, there has been a move away from targeted, destructive laser therapy, dependent on fluorescein angiography to intravitreal injection therapy of anti-growth factor agents, largely guided by optical coherence tomography. As a result of these changes, ophthalmologists have witnessed a marked improvement in visual outcomes for their patients with wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD), while at the same time developing and enacting entirely novel ways of delivering care. In the field of diabetic retinopathy, this period also saw advances in laser technology and a move away from highly destructive laser photocoagulation treatment to gentler retinal laser treatments. The introduction of intravitreal therapies, both steroids and anti-growth factor agents, has further advanced the treatment of diabetic macular oedema. This era has also seen in the United Kingdom the introduction of a coordinated national diabetic retinopathy screening programme, which offers an increasing hope that the burden of blindness from diabetic eye disease can be lessened. Exciting future advances in retinal imaging, genetics, and pharmacology will allow us to further improve outcomes for our patients and for ophthalmologists specialising in medical retina, the future looks very exciting but increasingly busy.

These virtual systems are usable for analysis of medical intrascopy systems functioning. The virtual educational technical systems allow guarantee the goodness technical training of bioengineers.

Hospitals and healthcare facilities in the United States are facing serious shortages of medical laboratory personnel, which, if not addressed, stand to negatively impact patient care. The problem is compounded by a reduction in the numbers of academic programs and resulting decrease in the number of graduates to keep up with the increase in industry demands. Given these challenges, the purpose of this study was to identify predictors of success for students in a selected 2-year Medical Laboratory Technology Associate in Science Degree Program. ^ This study examined five academic factors (College Placement Test Math and Reading scores, Cumulative GPA, Science GPA, and Professional [first semester laboratory courses] GPA) and, demographic data to see if any of these factors could predict program completion. The researcher examined academic records for a 10-year period (N =158). Using a retrospective model, the correlational analysis between the variables and completion revealed a significant relationship (p < .05) for CGPA, SGPA, CPT Math, and PGPA indicating that students with higher CGPA, SGPA, CPT Math, and PGPA were more likely to complete their degree in 2 years. Binary logistic regression analysis with the same academic variables revealed PGPA was the best predictor of program completion (p < .001). ^ Additionally, the findings in this study are consistent with the academic part of the Bean and Metzner Conceptual Model of Nontraditional Student Attrition which points to academic outcome variables such as GPA as affecting attrition. Thus, the findings in this study are important to students and educators in the field of Medical Laboratory Technology since PGPA is a predictor that can be used to provide early in-program intervention to the at-risk student, thus increasing the chances of successful timely completion.^
