We investigate electrical properties of InAs/InP semiconductor nanostructures by conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM) and current measurements at low temperatures in processed devices. Different conductances and threshold voltages for current onset were observed for each type of nanostructure. In particular, the extremity of the wire could be compared to a dot with similar dimensions. The processed devices were used in order to access the in-plane conductance of an assembly of a reduced number of nanostructures. Here, fluctuations on I-V curves at low temperatures (<40 K) were observed. At these low temperatures and for a suitable range of applied voltages, random telegraph noise (RTN) in the current was observed for devices with dots. These fluctuations can be associated to electrons trapped in dots, as suggested by numerical simulations. A crossover from a semiconductor-like to a metallic transport behavior is also observed for similar parameters. © 2006 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA.

Synthesis of SnO2 ceramic powders was made by coprecipitation method and polymeric precursor method (Pechini) to obtain Sn-Co-Nb-Ti-Al varistor systems. The particles of the obtained ceramic powder presented nanometric size and SnO2 was the principal crystalline phase in them according to X-ray diffraction results. To determine the behavior of the synthesized samples in front of the thermal treatments, thermal analysis (DTA/TG) were made. Dilatometric studies on previously pressed samples were carried out. The optimal conditions of sintering of this raw material were determined. Microstructures and electric properties of sintered samples were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and I-V characteristics curves. The samples presented varistor behavior independent of the synthesis method used, with high nonlinearity values as 32. The presence of Al3+ favored the concentration of oxygen vacancies, and the grain growth.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been shown to modulate neuronal synaptic transmission and may play a role on the autonomic control of the cardiovascular system. In this study we investigated the effects produced by hydrogen peroxide (H 2O 2) injected alone or combined with the anti-oxidant agent N-acetil-l-cysteine (NAC) or catalase into the fourth brain ventricle (4th V) on mean arterial pressure and heart rate of conscious rats. Moreover the involvement of the autonomic nervous system on the cardiovascular responses to H 2O 2 into the 4th V was also investigated. Male Holtzman rats (280-320 g) with a stainless steel cannula implanted into the 4th V and polyethylene cannulas inserted into the femoral artery and vein were used. Injections of H 2O 2 (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 μmol/0.2 μL, n = 6) into the 4th V produced transient (for 10 min) dose-dependent pressor responses. The 1.0 and 1.5 μmol doses of H 2O 2 also produced a long lasting bradycardia (at least 24 h with the high dose of H 2O 2). Prior injection of N-acetyl-l-cysteine (250 nmol/1 μL/rat) into the 4th V blockade the pressor response and attenuated the bradycardic response to H 2O 2 (1 μmol/0.5 μL/rat, n = 7) into the 4th V. Intravenous (i.v.) atropine methyl bromide (1.0 mg/kg, n = 11) abolished the bradycardia but did not affect the pressor response to H 2O 2. Prazosin hydrochloride (1.0 mg/kg, n = 6) i.v. abolished the pressor response but did not affect the bradycardia. The increase in the catalase activity (500 UEA/1 μL/rat injected into the 4th V) also abolished both, pressor and bradycardic responses to H 2O 2. The results suggest that increased ROS availability into 4th V simultaneously activate sympathetic and parasympathetic outflow inducing pressor and bradycardic responses. © 2006 Elsevier Inc. Polymnia sonchifolia is a medicinal plant used as hypoglycemic agent and other ends. The aim was to evaluate the yacon effect on diabetes in Wistar female rats, which was divided in 4 groups: non-diabetic (n=24) given (gavage) 32.4 mg kg -1 of an aqueous extract of plant (treated group) or vehicle (non-treated group), and one diabetic group (n=24) with similar treatment compared to non-diabetic rats. Diabetes was induced using streptozotocin (i.v. route, 40 mg kg -1). Glycemia was monitored after rodent adaptation period, 15 days after diabetes induction, and each 10 days after yacon/vehicle in early treatment. During experiment period, body weights, food and water intake were daily measured. The rats (non-diabetic or diabetic) given yacon extract treatment presented no significant difference related with glycemia, body weight gain, and food and water intake. Thus, further studies such increase of rat number in agreement with different glycemic levels and increase of the plant extract dose are necessary.

Tinplate is one of the most widely used food canning materials, however, there are significant problems related to the use of tinplate cans, such as alterations in sensory features affecting food quality and corrosion phenomena of the canning material. To avoid corrosion problems different methods have been used for the passivation of tinplate such protective lacquers or different kinds of corrosion inhibitors (chromate and dichromate). However, chromates and dichromates are extremely harmful to the environment and can cause carcinogenic tumors to humans. An option, protective coatings obtained by the sol-gel process, act as a physical barrier, which isolates the surface of metal protecting from the corrosive agents. The aim of this work is to study the influence of addition of cerium (IV) ions in the inorganic and organic part of sol-gel processing in the formation of hybrid coatings based on siloxane-PMMA on tin plate. The coatings were obtained by dip-coating technique and evaluated by open circuit and impedance measurements, linear polarization and polarization curves obtained in 3.5% NaCl solution. The results have clearly shown the improvement on the protective properties of the Ce 4+ modified film when added into the organic phase, which can be due to the formation of a more uniform and densely reticulated siloxane-PMMA film. © 2009 by NACE International.

We present a measurement of the ratio of positive to negative muon fluxes from cosmic ray interactions in the atmosphere, using data collected by the CMS detector both at ground level and in the underground experimental cavern at the CERN LHC. Muons were detected in the momentum range from 5 GeV/. c to 1 TeV/. c. The surface flux ratio is measured to be 1.2766±0.0032(stat.)±0.0032(syst.), independent of the muon momentum, below 100 GeV/. c. This is the most precise measurement to date. At higher momenta the data are consistent with an increase of the charge ratio, in agreement with cosmic ray shower models and compatible with previous measurements by deep-underground experiments. © 2010.

A large sample of cosmic ray events collected by the CMS detector is exploited to measure the specific energy loss of muons in the lead tungstate (PbWO4) of the electromagnetic calorimeter. The measurement spans a momentum range from 5 GeV/c to 1 TeV/c. The results are consistent with the expectations over the entire range. The calorimeter energy scale, set with 120 GeV/c electrons, is validated down to the sub-GeV region using energy deposits, of order 100 MeV, associated with low-momentum muons. The muon critical energy in PbWO4 is measured to be 160+5 -68 GeV, in agreement with expectations. This is the first experimental determination of muon critical energy. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA.

The CMS Collaboration conducted a month-long data-taking exercise known as the Cosmic Run At Four Tesla in late 2008 in order to complete the commissioning of the experiment for extended operation. The operational lessons resulting from this exercise were addressed in the subsequent shutdown to better prepare CMS for LHC beams in 2009. The cosmic data collected have been invaluable to study the performance of the detectors, to commission the alignment and calibration techniques, and to make several cosmic ray measurements. The experimental setup, conditions, and principal achievements from this data-taking exercise are described along with a review of the preceding integration activities. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA.

The CMS Level-1 trigger was used to select cosmic ray muons and LHC beam events during data-taking runs in 2008, and to estimate the level of detector noise. This paper describes the trigger components used, the algorithms that were executed, and the trigger synchronisation. Using data from extended cosmic ray runs, the muon, electron/photon, and jet triggers have been validated, and their performance evaluated. Efficiencies were found to be high, resolutions were found to be good, and rates as expected. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA.

The performance of the Local Trigger based on the drift-tube system of the CMS experiment has been studied using muons from cosmic ray events collected during the commissioning of the detector in 2008. The properties of the system are extensively tested and compared with the simulation. The effect of the random arrival time of the cosmic rays on the trigger performance is reported, and the results are compared with the design expectations for proton-proton collisions and with previous measurements obtained with muon beams. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA.

The CMS experiment uses self-triggering arrays of drift tubes in the barrel muon trigger to perform the identification of the correct bunch crossing. The identification is unique only if the trigger chain is correctly synchronized. In this paper, the synchronization performed during an extended cosmic ray run is described and the results are reported. The random arrival time of cosmic ray muons allowed several synchronization aspects to be studied and a simple method for the fine synchronization of the Drift Tube Local Trigger at LHC to be developed. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA.

The CMS High-Level Trigger (HLT) is responsible for ensuring that data samples with potentially interesting events are recorded with high efficiency and good quality. This paper gives an overview of the HLT and focuses on its commissioning using cosmic rays. The selection of triggers that were deployed is presented and the online grouping of triggered events into streams and primary datasets is discussed. Tools for online and offline data quality monitoring for the HLT are described, and the operational performance of the muon HLT algorithms is reviewed. The average time taken for the HLT selection and its dependence on detector and operating conditions are presented. The HLT performed reliably and helped provide a large dataset. This dataset has proven to be invaluable for understanding the performance of the trigger and the CMS experiment as a whole. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA.

The pixel detector of the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment consists of three barrel layers and two disks for each endcap. The detector was installed in summer 2008, commissioned with charge injections, and operated in the 3.8 T magnetic field during cosmic ray data taking. This paper reports on the first running experience and presents results on the pixel tracker performance, which are found to be in line with the design specifications of this detector. The transverse impact parameter resolution measured in a sample of high momentum muons is 18 microns. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA.
