We have investigated the effects of depletion of the elements C, N and O on the chemical composition of dark clouds, using both isothermal and isochoric cloud models. Our work differs from previous approaches in that we have considered a much larger range of CNO depletions. We have included the chemistry of the ortho-and para-forms of H2 and the exothermic reaction between N+ and ortho-H2, which synthesizes NH3. In the isothermal models, the ortho:para ratio is very small at large depletions, but NH3 formation is still efficient owing to reactions between He+ and CN or HCN. In the isochoric models, the equilibrium temperature of the gas is larger, and a thermal ortho:para ratio, which is large enough to drive NH3 formation, results. In all cases, the fractional abundance of NH3 is close to 10(-8) and this may help to explain the puzzling observation that, in dark clouds, the column density of NH3 is always close to 10(15) cm-2.

Anisotropic impedance surfaces are employed as low-profile and broadband reflectors that convert orthogonal linear to right- and left-handed circular polarization respectively. By virtue of anisotropy, it is possible to independently control the reflection characteristics of two orthogonal linearly polarized incident plane waves and therefore achieve linear to circular polarization conversion. Equivalent circuits for anisotropic impedance surfaces with arbitrarily shaped elements are employed to demonstrate the operating principle and a design procedure is proposed. The proposed design procedure is demonstrated by means of an example involving a dipole array. A prototype is designed and its performance characteristics are evaluated. The 3-dB relative axial ratio bandwidth exceeds 60%, while low loss and angular stability are also reported. Numerical and experimental results on a fabricated prototype are presented to validate the synthesis and the performance. © 2006 IEEE.

Mechanistic analysis of the reaction between elemental sulfur or selenium and 1,3-dialkylimidazolium acetate ionic liquids, in the absence of an external base or solvent, affords evidence for the equilibrium presence of carbene species in these ionic liquids. It demonstrates the potential to control, through anion selection, the concentration of carbene in stable ionic liquids.

Driven by a double 75 ps pulse with 2.2 ns separation, saturated operation of nickel-like Ag, In, Sn, and Sm X-ray lasers have been demonstrated with only 75 J drive energy on target. The variation of X-ray laser output with target length is found to fit well to a simple model for an amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) laser including saturation. Small signal gains of similar to 10 cm(-1), effective gain length products of similar to 18, and saturation irradiance of (1-5)x 10(10) W/cm(2) are measured for these lasers using a fitting procedure. Coherent wake emission is a unique source of extreme ultraviolet radiation and has been recently shown to provide the basis for intense attosecond light. Here we present a novel scheme, supported by particle-in-cell simulations, demonstrating that enhancement and spectral control of the coherent wake emission signal can be achieved by modifying the interaction plasma density ramp. Significant tunable enhancement of harmonic emission is verified experimentally, with factors of > 50 in relative signal increase achieved in a narrow band of harmonics at the cutoff frequency.
