Um dos maiores problemas da hanseníase é o desenvolvimento de neurite aguda, que pode resultar em dor, comprometimento da função neural e incapacidade física. Apesar de a prednisona ser o principal medicamento usado no tratamento deste processo, pouco se conhece sobre a sua real eficácia no controle da neurite. O objetivo principal deste trabalho é avaliar a evolução das neurites hansênicas durante o tratamento com prednisona, através do exame clínico-neurológico. O estudo foi realizado na Unidade de Referência Especializada em Dermatologia Sanitária do estado do Pará "Dr. Marcello Candia", com inclusão de 23 sujeitos com idade média de 40,5 anos, 65% do sexo masculino. Todos multibacilares, sendo 20 borderline e 3 lepromatosos. Sessenta e um por cento já haviam recebido alta da poliquimioterapia. Foram incluídos, no estudo, sujeitos com neurite, associada ou não a acompanhamento da função motora e/ou sensitiva, utilizando esquema padrão do Ministério da Saúde, com dose inicial de 60 mg de prednisona/dia e regressão a cada 15 dias. O exame clínico foi realizado nos principais nervos periféricos afetados pela hanseníase. Após 18 semanas de acompanhamento, 60,87% dos pacientes necessitaram de prednisona por um tempo superior ao inicialmente proposto. A dor teve uma evolução clínica melhor que a força muscular e a sensibilidade cutânea. Houve melhora da dor em 71,23% dos nervos (p<0,005); entretanto, 42,47% permaneceram com neurite; a função sensitiva melhorou em 63,16% dos nervos (p > 0,05); e a função motora melhorou em 50% (p < 0,05). Os resultados indicaram que as 18 semanas de uso de prednisona não foram suficientes para a resolução da neurite hansênica e do comprometimento da função neural, na maioria dos pacientes do estudo.

Os enteroparasitas constituem-se em importante problema de saúde para a população humana no mundo inteiro. O consumo de hortaliças é uma das grandes vias de transmissão desses patógenos. Este trabalho buscou determinar a frequência e a diversidade de enteroparasitos veiculados por hortaliças comercializadas, na região metropolitana de Belém-PA, e sua relação com a sazonalidade climática da região. Foram usadas 252 amostras de três espécies de hortaliças, sendo 84 de alface (Lactuca sativa- variedade crespa), 84 de agrião (Nasturtium officinale) e 84 de coentro (Coriandrum sativum) adquiridas em feiras, hortas e em um supermercado, no período de dezembro de 2008 a novembro de 2009. Cada amostra foi lavada com 500 ml de PBS, permitindo a sedimentação espontânea e posterior centrifugação dos 30 ml finais do sedimento. O sedimento final foi analisado à microscopia óptica comum. Os níveis de contaminação das três espécies de hortaliças foram obtidos pelas médias mensais de estruturas enteroparasitárias identificadas em cada uma delas, e pelo número total de parasitos identificados, nas amostras de cada feira, horta e supermercado. Aos resultados obtidos, na análise microscópica das amostras, foi aplicado o Teste do Quiquadrado e o Teste Exato de Fisher, para determinar a existência ou não de diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre esses resultados. Foi usado o nível de significância ≤ 0,05. A análise microscópica revelou uma contaminação de 100% das amostras obtidas nas feiras, nas hortas e no supermercado incluídos na pesquisa, não havendo diferença estatística na frequência total de parasitos entre elas. O Strongyloides stercoralis foi o parasito mais prevalente, seguido pelo complexo Entamoeba histolytica/dispar e pelos ancilostomídeos, tanto nas amostras das hortas, quanto nas amostras das feiras e do supermercado. O agrião e a alface apresentaram maior índice de contaminação parasitária que o coentro. Foi caracterizada a influência sazonal sobre a intensidade de parasitos nas hortaliças pesquisadas, pois houve diferença estatística entre os resultados obtidos com uma prevalência maior de parasitos nas amostras de verão, em relação as amostras de inverno. Não houve diferença estatisticamente significativa entre as médias mensais de contaminação das hortaliças comercializadas nas feiras, nas hortas e no supermercado, indicando que, as condições de higiene sob as quais são comercializadas as hortaliças, apesar de importantes para manter suas características organolépticas, tem menor influência sobre os níveis de contaminação parasitária, que parece estar mais associada ao local e condições de cultivo desses vegetais. Esses dados permitem um bom grau de comparação para futuros trabalhos.

Objective. To evaluate the potential effects of race on clinical characteristics, extent of disease, and response to chemotherapy in women with postmolar low-risk gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN).Methods. This non-concurrent cohort study was undertaken including patients with FIGO-defined postmolar low-risk GTN treated with comparable doses and schedules of chemotherapy at the New England Trophoblastic Disease Center (NETDC) between 1973 and 2012. Racial groups investigated included whites, African American and Asians. Information on patient characteristics and response to chemotherapy (need for second line chemotherapy, reason for changing to an alternative chemotherapy, number of cycles/regimens, need for combination chemotherapy, and time to hCG remission) was obtained.Results. Of 316 women, 274 (86.7%) were white, 19 (6%) African American, and 23 (7.3%) Asian. African Americans were significantly younger than white and Asian women (p = 0.008). Disease presentation, and extent of disease, including antecedent molar histology, median time to persistence, median hCG level at persistence, rate of D&C at persistence, presence of metastatic disease, and FIGO stage and risk score were similar among races. Need for second line chemotherapy (p = 0.023), and median number of regimens (p = 0.035) were greater in Asian women than in other races.Conclusions. Low-risk GTN was more aggressive in Asian women, who were significantly more likely to need second line chemotherapy and a higher number of chemotherapy regimens to achieve complete remission than women of African American and Asian descent. Further studies involving racial differences related to clinical, biological and environmental characteristics are needed. (C) 2015 Published by Elsevier Inc.

This paper shows the possibility of obtaining new parameters for the mathematical modelling of data on stable isotopes in biological systems and its application in obtaining data on metabolic pools of blood plasma, blood serum, liver and muscle of broilers. This theory states that the modelling of turnover used for studies of isotopic incorporation when the metabolism has a single metabolic pool is feasible by the technique of setting an exponential. However, when the metabolism has more than one metabolic pool, it is necessary to apply the linearization technique, linear regression adjustment and evaluation of the assumptions of regression to obtain the kinetic parameters such as half-life (T1/2) and isotope exchange rate (k). The application of this technique on carbon-13 data from 100 one-day-old chicks, with the change of diet composed of grains of the photosynthetic cycle of plants from C4 to C3, in broilers has enabled the discovery that the liver, blood plasma and blood serum have a single metabolic pool; however, the pectoral muscle has two metabolic pools. For the liver, blood plasma and blood serum, the half-life values were found by the exponential fit being T1/2 = 1.4 days with the rate of exchange of k = 0.502, T1/2 = 2.4 days with k = 0.293 and T1/2 = 2.0 days with k = 0.348, respectively. For the pectoral muscle, after linearization, the half-life values were found for T1/2(1) = 1.7 and T1/2(2) = 3 days, with exchange rates of k1 = 0.405 and k2 = 0.235, representing approximately 66 and 34 %, respectively.

We investigated estradiol benzoate effects on oocytes/embryos recovery rate and the influence of this drug on the hematopoietic system. Twenty four bitches were divided in two groups, Group I, 12 females that received a single shot of estradiol benzoate, 0.2 mg/kg intramuscularly, between 2 and 7 days after the date of the last mismating or insemination and, Group II (control), 12 bitches that received 0.2 ml/kg of oily diluent, in corresponding dates. The bitches were ovary-hysterectomized and the uterus/oviduct were isolated and flushed with a PBS, heparin and polyvinyl alcohol solution. Oocytes and embryos were quantified and classified according to their stage of development. Blood counts were performed on M1 (before drug administration), M2 (15 days after drug administration) and M3 (40 days after drug administration). Pearson correlation coefficient was used to analyze the variable retrieval structures, while Fisher exact test was used for the analysis of embryonic viability. ANOVA was used to analyze repeated measurements and Tukey test for hematological parameters. All tests were performed at 5% significance level. The recovery rate of total structures in group I was lower (22.88%) than group II (65.85%). A lower embryo recovery (ratio 3: 52) rate and a greater number of degenerated structures (ratio 11: 1) were observed in group I. Hematological parameters showed significant difference in erythrocytes, hematocrit and hemoglobin concentrations 15 days after drug administration and difference in leukocytes concentration 40 days after using the medication in bitches of group I, however, at the end of the experiment all bitches had blood counts considered normal.

Complexity in time series is an intriguing feature of living dynamical systems, with potential use for identification of system state. Although various methods have been proposed for measuring physiologic complexity, uncorrelated time series are often assigned high values of complexity, errouneously classifying them as a complex physiological signals. Here, we propose and discuss a method for complex system analysis based on generalized statistical formalism and surrogate time series. Sample entropy (SampEn) was rewritten inspired in Tsallis generalized entropy, as function of q parameter (qSampEn). qSDiff curves were calculated, which consist of differences between original and surrogate series qSampEn. We evaluated qSDiff for 125 real heart rate variability (HRV) dynamics, divided into groups of 70 healthy, 44 congestive heart failure (CHF), and 11 atrial fibrillation (AF) subjects, and for simulated series of stochastic and chaotic process. The evaluations showed that, for nonperiodic signals, qSDiff curves have a maximum point (qSDiff(max)) for q not equal 1. Values of q where the maximum point occurs and where qSDiff is zero were also evaluated. Only qSDiff(max) values were capable of distinguish HRV groups (p-values 5.10 x 10(-3); 1.11 x 10(-7), and 5.50 x 10(-7) for healthy vs. CHF, healthy vs. AF, and CHF vs. AF, respectively), consistently with the concept of physiologic complexity, and suggests a potential use for chaotic system analysis. Evaluation of outcomes after aesthetic surgery still is a challenge in plastic surgery. The evaluation frequently is based on subjective criteria. This study used a new clinical grading scale to evaluate aesthetic results for plastic surgeries to the abdomen. The method scores each of the following five parameters: volume of subcutaneous tissue, contour, excess of skin, aspect of the navel, and quality of the scar on the abdominal wall. The scale options are 0 (poor), 1 (fair), and 2 (good), and the total rate can range from 0 to 10. The study included 40 women ages 18-53 years. Of these 40 women, 20 underwent traditional abdominoplasty, and 20 had liposuction alone. Preoperatively and at least 1 year later, photographic results were analyzed and scored by three independent plastic surgeons. In the abdominoplasty group, the average grade rose from 2.9 +/- A 0.4 to 6.8 +/- A 0.4 postoperatively. In the liposuction group, the average grade was 5.3 +/- A 0.5 preoperatively and 7.7 +/- A 0.4 postoperatively. In both groups, the average postoperative grade was significantly higher than the preoperative grade. The mean scores for groups A and L were significantly different, demonstrating that the scale was sensitive in identifying different anatomic abnormalities in the abdomen. The rating scale used for the aesthetic evaluation of the abdomen was effective in the analysis of two different procedures: conventional abdominoplasty and liposuction. Abdominoplasty provided the greater gain according to a comparison of the pre- and postoperative scores.

The aim of this study was to examine a case report of vascular leiomyoma located in the oral mucosa of the oral cavity. Vascular leiomyoma is a benign tumor arising from smooth muscle. One factor that makes vascular leiomyomas in the oral cavity rare is that there is little smooth muscle in the mouth. The most common histological subtype in the oral cavity is the vascular subtype. The greatest difficulty in histological diagnosis of this entity is the similarity in morphology with other malignancies, particularly of neural or fibroblastic lineage. Wide surgical resection is the only treatment reported in the literature with good results. The recurrence rate is very low if complete resection is achieved. The study of rare or unusual lesions is very important for the clinical diagnosis of vascular leiomyoma

Der Austausch der NO2-Konzentration zwischen der Atmosphäre und verschiedenen Bäumen (Betula pendula, Fagus sylvatica, Quercus robur, Quercus ilex und Pinus sylvestris) wurde mit einer Dynamischen Küvette gemessen. Die NO2-Konzentrationen wurden mit einem CLD 780 TR Analysator in Verbindung mit einem PLC 762 gemessen. Die experimentellen Untersuchungen wurden im Dunkeln und unter zwei Lichtintensitäts-Niveaus (PAR, 450 und 900 µmol m-2 s-1) und sechs verschiedene NO2-Konzentrationen zwischen 0 - 5.0 ppb durchgeführt. Der stomatäre Einfluss wurde unter Einsatz des Hormons Abscisinsäure untersucht. Die Umgebungsparameter (Lufttemperatur und Luftfeuchtigkeit) wurden konstant gehalten. Die Daten zeigten klar und deutlich den dominanten Einfluss der jeweiligen Baumspezies auf die NO2-Konzentrationen innerhalb der Küvette. Die Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit belegen bei allen Spezies eine lineare Abhängigkeit der NO2-Austauschrate mit der NO2-Umgebungskozentration und mit der stomatären Leitfähigkeit. Das Vorhandensein eines Kompensationspunkt wird nicht bestätigt.
