The potential consequences of early and late puberty on the psychological and behavioural development of the adolescent are not well known. This paper presents focused analyses from the Swiss SMASH study, a self-administered questionnaire survey conducted among a representative sample of 7488 adolescents from 16 to 20 years old. Data from participants reporting early or late timing of puberty were compared with those reporting average timing of maturation. Early maturing girls reported a higher rate of dissatisfaction with body image (OR=1.32) and functional symptoms (OR=1.52) and reported engaging in sexual activity more often (OR=1.93). Early maturing boys reported engaging in exploratory behaviours (sexual intercourse, legal and illegal substance use) at a significantly higher rate (OR varying between 1.4 and 1.99). Both early and late maturing boys reported higher rates of dysfunctional eating patterns (OR=1.59 and 1.38, respectively), victimisation (OR=1.61 and 1.37, respectively) and depressive symptoms (OR=2.11 and 1.53, respectively). Clinicians should take into account the pubertal stage of their patients and provide them, as well as their parents, with appropriate counselling in the field of mental health and health behaviour.

An increasing number of anterior cruciate ligament injuries are now seen in children and girls seem to be equally affected. Such neglected or untreated lesions could be the cause of early degenerative changes. Recently, many authors support the trend toward early surgical management in skeletally immature patients with complex meniscal tear or recurrent knee instability after proper rehabilitation. Improvement in pediatric knowledge and surgical techniques tend to support a tendency for more surgical treatment in children. The type of management is choosing according to history and physical examination. Magnetic resonance imaging is a useful tool not only for diagnosis but also for surgical treatment planning. We usually recommend anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction in children with knee instability or with further damages to the joint.

Les cancers du col utérin et de la vessie prennent tous deux leur origine dans les sites muqueux et peuvent évoluer lentement de lésions superficielles (lésions squameuses intra-épithéliales de bas à haut grade (HSIL) et carcinomes in situ du col utérin (CIS); ou tumeurs non musculo-invasives de la vessie (NMIBC)) à des cancers invasifs plus avancés. L'éthiologie de ces deux cancers est néanmoins très différente. Le cancer du col utérin est, à l'échelle mondiale, le deuxième cancer le plus mortel chez la femme. Ce cancer résulte de l'infection des cellules basales de l'épithélium stratifié du col utérin par le papillomavirus humain à haut risque (HPV). Les vaccins prophylactiques récemment développés contre le HPV (Gardasil® et Cervarix®) sont des moyens de prévention efficaces lorsqu'ils sont administrés chez les jeunes filles qui ne sont pas encore sexuellement actives; cependant ces vaccins ne permettent pas la régression des lésions déjà existantes. Malgré un développement actif, les vaccins thérapeutiques ciblant les oncogènes viraux E6/E7 n'ont montré qu'une faible efficacité clinique jusqu'à présent. Nous avons récemment démontré qu'une immunisation sous-cutanée (s.c.) était capable de faire régresser les petites tumeurs génitales chez 90% des souris, mais chez seulement 20% des souris présentant de plus grandes tumeurs. Dans cette étude, nous avons développé une nouvelle stratégie où la vaccination est associée à une application locale (intra-vaginale (IVAG)) d'agonistes de TLR. Celle-ci induit une augmentation des cellules T CD8 totales ainsi que T CD8 spécifiques au vaccin, mais pas des cellules T CD4. L'attraction sélective des cellules T CD8 est permise par leur expression des récepteurs de chemokines CCR5 et CXCR3 ainsi que par les ligants E-selectin. La vaccination, suivie de l'application IVAG de CpG, a conduit, chez 75% des souris, à la régression de grandes tumeurs établies. Le cancer de la vessie est le deuxième cancer urologique le plus fréquente. La plupart des tumeurs sont diagnostiquées comme NMIBC et sont restreintes à la muqueuse de la vessie, avec une forte propension à la récurrence et/ou progression après une résection locale. Afin de développer des vaccins contre les antigènes associés à la tumeur (TAA), il est nécessaire de trouver un moyen d'induire une réponse immunitaire CD8 spécifique dans la vessie. Pour ce faire, nous avons comparé différentes voies d'immunisation, en utilisant un vaccin composé d'adjuvants et de l'oncogène de HPV (E7) comme modèle. Les vaccinations s.c. et IVAG ont toutes deux induit un nombre similaire de cellules T CD8 spécifiques du vaccin dans la vessie, alors que l'immunisation intra-nasale fut inefficace. Les voies s.c. et IVAG ont induit des cellules T CD8 spécifiques du vaccin exprimant principalement aL-, a4- et le ligand d'E-selectin, suggérant que ces intégrines/sélectines sont responsables de la relocalisation des cellules T dans la vessie. Une unique immunisation avec E7 a permis une protection tumorale complète lors d'une étude prophylactique, indépendemment de la voie d'immunisation. Dans une étude thérapeutique, seules les vaccinations s.c. et IVAG ont efficacement conduit, chez environ 50% des souris, à la régression de tumeurs de la vessie établies, alors que l'immunisation intra-nasale n'a eu aucun effet. La régression de la tumeur est correlée avec l'infiltration dans la tumeur des cellules T CD8 spécifiques au vaccin et la diminution des cellules T régulatrices (Tregs). Afin d'augmenter l'efficacité de l'immunisation avec le TAA, nous avons testé une vaccination suivie de l'instillation d'agonistes de TLR3 et TLR9, ou d'un vaccin Salmonella Typhi (Ty21a). Cette stratégie a entraîné une augmentation des cellules T CD8 effectrices spécifiques du vaccin dans la vessie, bien qu'à différentes échelles. Ty21a étant l'immunostimulant le plus efficace, il mérite d'être étudié de manière plus approfondie dans le contexte du NMIBC. - Both cervical and bladder cancer originates in mucosal sites and can slowly progress from superficial lesions (low to high-grade squamous intra-epithelial lesions (HSIL) and carcinoma in situ (CIS) in the cervix; or non-muscle invasive tumors in the bladder (NMIBC)), to more advanced invasive cancers. The etiology of these two cancers is however very different. Cervical cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in women worldwide. This cancer results from the infection of the basal cells of the stratified epithelium of the cervix by high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV). The recent availability of prophylactic vaccines (Gardasil® and Cervarix®) against HPV is an effective strategy to prevent this cancer when administered to young girls before sexual activity; however, these vaccines do not induce regression of established lesions. Despite active development, therapeutic vaccines targeting viral oncogenes E6/E7 had limited clinical efficacy to date. We recently reported that subcutaneous (s.c.) immunization was able to regress small genital tumors in 90% of the mice, but only 20% of mice had regression of larger tumors. Here, we developed a new strategy where vaccination is combined with the local (intravaginal (IVAG)) application of TLR agonists. This new strategy induced an increase of both total and vaccine-specific CD8 T cells in cervix-vagina, but not CD4 T cells. The selective attraction of CD8 T cells is mediated by the expression of CCR5 and CXCR3 chemokine receptors and E-selectin ligands in these cells. Vaccination followed by IVAG application of CpG resulted in tumor regression of large established tumors in 75% of the mice. Bladder cancer is the second most common urological malignancy. Most tumors are diagnosed as NMIBC, and are restricted to the mucosal bladder with a high propensity to recur and/or progress after local resection. Aiming to develop vaccines against tumor associated antigens (TAA) it is necessary to investigate how to target vaccine-specific T-cell immune responses to the bladder. Here we thus compared using an adjuvanted HPV oncogene (E7) vaccine, as a model, different routes of immunization. Both s.c. and IVAG vaccination induced similar number of vaccine-specific CD8 T-cells in the bladder, whereas intranasal (i.n.) immunization was ineffective. S.c. and IVAG routes induced predominantly aL-, a4- and E-selectin ligand-expressing vaccine-specific CD8 T-cells suggesting that these integrin/selectin are responsible for T-cell homing to the bladder. A single E7 immunization conferred full tumor protection in a prophylactic setting, irrespective of the immunization route. In a therapeutic setting, only ivag and s.c. vaccination efficiently regressed established bladder-tumors in ca. 50 % of mice, whereas i.n. immunization had no effect. Tumor regression correlated with vaccine- specific CD8 T cell tumor-infiltration and decrease of regulatory T cells (Tregs). To increase efficacy of TAA immunization, we tested vaccination followed by the local instillation of TLR3 or TLR9 agonist or of a Salmonella Typhi vaccine (Ty21a). This strategy resulted in an increase of vaccine-specific effector CD8 T cells in the bladder, although at different magnitudes. Ty21a being the most efficient, it deserves further investigation in the context of NMIBC. We further tested another strategy to improve therapies of NMIBC. In the murine MB49 bladder tumor model, we replaced the intravesical (ives) BCG therapy by another vaccine strain the Salmonella Ty21a. Ives Ty21a induced bladder tumor regression at least as efficiently as BCG. Ty21a bacteria did not infect nor survive neither in healthy nor in tumor-bearing bladders, suggesting its safety. Moreover, Ty21a induced a transient inflammatory response in healthy bladders, mainly through infiltration of neutrophils and macrophages that rapidly returned to basal levels, confirming its potential safety. The tumor regression was associated to a robust infiltration of immune cells, and secretion of cytokines in urines. Infection of murine tumor cell lines by Ty21a resulted in cell apoptosis. The infection of both murine and human urothelial cell lines induced secretion of in vitro inflammatory cytokines. Ty21a may be an attractive alternative for the ives treatment of NMIBC after transurethral resection and thus deserves more investigation.

Immigrant Pupils in Special Education Schools The study focused on the opinions of immigrant pupils in the 1st–9th grades of basic education in four special education schools of the City of Turku and in need of special support about the following: 1. Their difficulties in going to school in general education before the transfer to a special education school. 2. Their opinions about the transfer process to special education and the changes in their school practice after being transferred to a special education school. 3. Their experiences about their school and coping in special education school. The study strengthened the idea that immigrant pupils need positive special treatment, linguistic support, individual guidance, small teaching groups and operating models that promote well-being on their integration and education path. The central educational idea of inclusive education is based on deconstructing the power structures concerning gender, ethnicity and “race” and approval of differences in the pupils. Shifting the emphasis from the pupil to working on the learning environment has resulted in special education no longer being primarily separate special education tied to a certain place, but directing the teaching more towards individuality. The central dimension of intercultural competence of a teacher working in a multicultural class seems to be the attitudes and approaches to a different pupil; the teacher must be interculturally sensitive when facing children and young people from a foreign culture. Education and teaching affect every sector of the pupil’s well-being. Learning and learning results have a connection with teaching, education and well-being. Every sector is important for the going to school and integration of an immigrant pupil in need of special support. The basis of the study is the equality of opportunities and the humanistic idea of the human being in the Finnish education policy. The immigrant pupils selected for the study represented the following language groups: Arabian, Albanian, Somali, Russian and Vietnamese. In the four special education schools, the number of immigrant pupils belonging to these language groups (2004) totalled 104. A total of 89 pupils i.e. 86% answered the questionnaire, which is sufficient considering the generalisation of the study. Although this is basically a quantitative study, the interviewing method was used in part of the study, because the questionnaires were in Finnish and consequently, it was difficult for some immigrant pupils to understand them. Understanding the questions was also affected by the fact that the age distribution in the study was very wide (7–18). According to the results of the study, the immigrants felt that the biggest drawbacks in general education were their inability to speak Finnish and lack of concentration. The actual process of being transferred to a special education class remained unclear for immigrant pupils, and they could do very little about the transfer themselves. The results show that immigrant pupils coped well in special education school; they felt that their learning ability and concentration improved in the small groups of the special education school. They considered the individual support given in the special education schools to be useful. The lower-grade immigrant pupils had a more positive attitude towards special education school than the upper-grade immigrant pupils. In all the special education schools the immigrant pupils experienced that they were in a good position in the class; girls felt this even a little more strongly than boys. The teacher-pupil-relationship was felt to be good. School bullying being so common was a negative feature experienced by immigrant pupils, who were often targets or bullies themselves. Immigrant pupils believed in their success at school and in the opportunities offered by special education schools. Generally they were of the opinion that pupils are not labelled by special school; however, upper-grade immigrant pupils were more hesitant than lower-grade immigrant pupils. This study aimed at bringing out the immigrant pupils’ own opinions. Teaching immigrant pupils in special education schools has not been very much studied in Finland, which made the topic new and even more challenging.

This study aimed to compare the sexual behavior of adolescents who were or were not exposed to online pornography, to assess to what extent the willingness of exposure changed these possible associations, and to determine the profiles of youths who were exposed to online pornography. Data were drawn from the 2002 Swiss Multicenter Adolescent Survey on Health, a self-administered cross-sectional, paper and pencil questionnaire. From the 7529 adolescents aged 16-20 years, 6054 (3283 males) used the Internet during the previous month and were eligible for our study. Males were divided into three groups (wanted exposure, 29.2%; unwanted exposure, 46.7%; no exposure, 24.1%) whereas females were divided into two groups (exposure, 35.9%; no exposure, 64.1%). The principal outcome measures were demographic characteristics, Internet use parameters and risky sexual behaviors. Risky sexual behaviors were not associated with online pornography exposure in any of the groups, except that males who were exposed (deliberately or not) had higher odds of not having used a condom at last intercourse. Bi/homosexual orientation and Internet use parameters were not associated either. Additionally, males in the wanted exposure group were more likely to be sensation-seekers. On the other hand, exposed girls were more likely to be students, higher sensation-seekers, early maturers, and to have a highly educated father. We conclude that pornography exposure is not associated with risky sexual behaviors and that the willingness of exposure does not seem to have an impact on risky sexual behaviors among adolescents.

Background: We examined one's own body image perception and its association with reported weight-related behavior among adolescents of a rapidly developing country in the African region. Methods: We conducted a school-based survey of 1432 students aged 11-17 years in the Seychelles. Weight and height were measured, and thinness, normal weight and overweight were assessed along standard criteria. A self-administered and anonymous questionnaire was administered. Perception of body image was assessed using both a closed-ended question (CEQ) and the Stunkard's pictorial silhouettes (SPS). Finally, a question assessed voluntary attempts to change weight. Results: Overall, 14.1% of the students were thin, 63.9% were normal-weight, and 22.0% were overweight or obese. There was fair agreement between actual weight status and self-perceived body image based on either CEQ or SPS. However, a substantial proportion of the overweight students did not consider themselves as overweight (SPS: 24%, CEQ: 34%) and, inversely, a substantial proportion of the normal-weight students considered themselves as too thin (SPS: 29%, CEQ: 15%). Among the overweight students, an adequate attempt to lose weight was reported more often by boys and girls who perceived themselves as overweight vs. not overweight (72-88% vs. 40-71%, p <0.05 for most comparisons). Among the normal-weight students, an inadequate attempt to gain weight was reported more often by boys and girls who perceived themselves as thin vs. not thin (27-68% vs. 11-19%, p <0.05). Girls had leaner own body ideals than boys. Conclusions: We found that substantial proportions of overweight students did not perceive themselves as overweight and/or did not want to lose weight and, inversely, that many normalweight students perceived themselves as too thin and/or wanted to gain weight: this points to forces that can drive the upwards overweight trends. Appropriate perception of one's weight was associated with adequate weight-control behavior, although not strongly, emphasizing that appropriate weight perception is only one of several factors driving adequate weight-related behavior. These findings emphasize the need to address appropriate perception of one's own weight and adequate weight-related behavior in adolescents for both individual and community weight-related interventions.

OBJECTIVE: Most studies assess the prevalence of hypertension in pediatric populations based on blood pressure (BP) readings taken on a single visit. We determined the prevalence of hypertension measured on up to three visits in a Swiss pediatric population and examined the association between hypertension and overweight and selected other factors. METHODS: Anthropometric data and BP were measured in all children of the sixth school grade of the Vaud canton (Switzerland) in 2005-2006. 'Elevated BP' was defined according to sex-specific, age-specific and height-specific US reference data. BP was measured on up to two additional visits in children with elevated BP. 'Hypertension' was defined as 'elevated BP' on all three visits. RESULTS: Out of 6873 children, 5207 (76%) participated [2621 boys, 2586 girls; mean (SD) age, 12.3 (0.5) years]. The prevalence of elevated BP was 11.4, 3.8 and 2.2% on first, second and thirds visits, respectively; hence 2.2% had hypertension. Among hypertensive children, 81% had isolated systolic hypertension. Hypertension was associated with excess body weight, elevated heart rate and parents' history of hypertension. Of the children, 16.1% of boys and 12.4% of girls were overweight or obese (CDC criteria, body mass index >or= 85th percentile). Thirty-seven percent of cases of hypertension could be attributed to overweight or obesity. CONCLUSIONS: The proportion of children with elevated BP based on one visit was five times higher than based on three measurements taken at few-week intervals. Our data re-emphasize the need for prevention and control of overweight in children to curb the global hypertension burden.

Abstract Objective. We compared the prevalence of body weight categories between public and private schools in the Seychelles, a rapidly developing small island state in the African region. Methods. In 2004-2006, weight and height were measured and self-reported information on physical activity collected in children of three selected grades in all schools in the country. Overweight, obesity and thinness were defined according to standard criteria. Results. Based on 8 462 students (377 in private schools), the prevalence of overweight (including obesity) was markedly higher in private than public schools (boys: 37% [95% CI: 31-44] vs. 15% [14-16]; girls: 33% [26-41] vs. 20% [19-22]). The prevalence of thinness grade 1 was lower in private than public schools (boys: 9% [5-13] vs. 20% [19-21]; girls: 13% [8-18] vs. 19% [18-20]). Students in private schools reported more physical activity at leisure time while students in public schools reported larger weekly walking time. Conclusions. Our findings suggest that school type may be a useful indicator for assessing the association between socio-economic status and overweight in children, and that overweight affects wealthy children more often than others in developing countries.

Tutkielman tavoite on selvittää, minkälaisia diskursseja lukion opettajat käyttävät puhuessaan sukupuolista ja millaisia sosiaalisia sukupuolia he puheessaan uusintavat. Tarkoituksena on tuoda näkyviin sellaisia diskursseja, joilla tytöistä ja pojista rakennetaan erilaisia. Teemahaastatteluja analysoidaan diskurssi-analyysin avulla. Opettajien puheissa toistuneesta kolmesta diskurssista kaksi, perinne- ja tiedediskurssi, uusintavat sellaisia sosiaalisia sukupuolia, joissa miehille ja naisille rakennettiin selvästi toisistaan poikkeavat roolit työ- ja perhe-elämään. Perinnediskurssilla pojista rakennettiin rohkeita, kun taas tytöistä tunnollisia ja syrjään vetäytyviä. Tiedediskurssilla rakennettiin sellaista sosiaalista todellisuutta, jossa matematiikka sopi paremmin pojille ja kielet tytöille. Kolmas käytetty diskurssi oli kykydiskurssi, joka ei uusintanut miesten ja naisten välisiä eroja,vaan rakensi sellaista sosiaalista todellisuutta, jossa kaikilla on sukupuolesta riippumattomat mahdollisuudet menestyä.

HIV-positive adolescents face a number of challenges in dealing with their disease and its treatment. In this qualitative study, twenty-nine HIV-positive adolescents aged 13 to 20 years (22 girls), who live in Switzerland, were asked, in a semi-structured interview (duration of 40-110 minutes), to describe their perceptions and experiences with the disease itself and with therapeutic adherence. While younger adolescents most often thought of their disease as fate, older adolescents usually knew that they had received it through vertical transmission, although the topic appeared to be particularly difficult to discuss for those living with their HIV-positive mothers. Based on their attending physician's assessment, 18 subjects were judged highly adherent, 4 fairly and 7 poorly adherent. High adherence appeared linked with adequate psychological adjustment and effective coping mechanisms, as well as with the discussion and adoption of explicit medication-taking strategies. The setting and organisation of health care teams should allow for ongoing discussions with HIV-positive adolescents that focus on their perceptions of their disease, how they cope with it and with the treatment, and how they could improve their adherence.

Objective: to assess the diagnostic accuracy of different anthropometric markers in defining low aerobic fitness among adolescents. Methods: cross-sectional study on 2,331 boys and 2,366 girls aged 10 - 18 years. Body mass index (BMI) was measured using standardized methods; body fat (BF) was assessed by bioelectrical impedance. Low aerobic fitness was assessed by the 20-meter shuttle run using the FITNESSGRAMR criteria. Waist was measured in a subsample of 1,933 boys and 1,897 girls. Overweight, obesity and excess fat were defined according to the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) or FITNESSGRAMR criteria. Results: 38.5% of boys and 46.5% of girls were considered as unfit according to the FITNESSGRAMR criteria. In boys, the area under the ROC curve (AUC) and 95% confidence interval were 66.7 (64.1 - 69.3), 67.1 (64.5 - 69.6) and 64.6 (61.9 - 67.2) for BMI, BF and waist, respectively (P<0.02). In girls, the values were 68.3 (65.9 - 70.8), 63.8 (61.3 - 66.3) and 65.9 (63.4 - 68.4), respectively (P<0.001). In boys, the sensitivity and specificity to diagnose low fitness were 13% and 99% for obesity (IOTF); 38% and 86% for overweight + obesity (IOTF); 28% and 94% for obesity (FITNESSGRAMR) and 42% and 81% for excess fat (FITNESSGRAMR). For girls, the values were 9% and 99% for obesity (IOTF); 33% and 82% for overweight + obesity (IOTF); 22% and 94% for obesity (FITNESSGRAMR) and 26% and 90% for excess fat (FITNESSGRAMR). Conclusions: BMI, not body fat or waist, should be used to define low aerobic fitness. The IOTF BMI cut-points to define obesity have a very low screening capacity and should not be used.

Objectifs: Faire le point sur les connaissances concernant la contraception post-coïtale (CPC) et son utilisation par les adolescentes, et réunir les recommandations utiles aux médecins prescripteurs. Matériel et méthodes: La revue de littérature concernant la CPC et les résultats d'une enquête concernant les comportements sexuels des adolescents de 16-20 ans en Suisse sont utilisés. Résultats: Plusieurs méthodes peuvent être utilisées incluant les oestroprogestatifs et les progestatifs seuls. C'est surtout à l'occasion de rupture de préservatif, d'oubli de pilule ou d'absence de contraception que la CPC peut être utile. Les adolescents sexuellement actifs semblent connaître l'existence de la CPC et 20% des jeunes filles y ont eu recours en Suisse. Mais les obstacles qui limitent l'accès à la CPC sont nombreux au niveau de l'information et de la qualité des services dans cette situation d'urgence. Discussion et conclusion: La sensibilisation des adolescents et des jeunes aux conditions d'utilisation de la CPC est nécessaire, et doit être associée à un effort de formation des professionnels et de qualité des services pour faciliter l'accès à la CPC. Mots-clefs: contraception d?urgence, contraception post-coïtale, pilule du lendemain, adolescents.<br/><br/>Purpose: To describe and analyze emergency contraception (EC) awareness and use among sexually active Swiss teenagers. Methods: Anonymous computerized questionnaires were distributed to a national representative sample of 4283 in-school adolescents (aged 16 to 20 years) in high schools and professional centers. Young people who were sexually active (51.5% of the sample: 1058 girls and 1073 boys) responded to questions on EC awareness and use and on sexual perception, attitude and behaviors. Univariate analyses and multiple regression analyses were used to describe EC awareness and use and their correlates. Results: Most of the sexually active girls (89.3%) and boys (75.2%) knew of the existence of EC. Of girls, 20% reported having used EC, and the majority of them used it only once (64.1%) or twice (18.5%). EC awareness was positively associated with the father's level of education (girls: odds ratio:5.18), and the scholastic curriculum of the respondent. Gender differences in the correlates of EC awareness demonstrate that girls who had a confidant, or a group of friends or boys of Swiss nationality and those who have had the opportunity to discuss the issue of contraception declare greater awareness of EC. EC use was higher among girls who lived in urban areas (odds ratio: 1.91) and occasionally had unprotected intercourse. We did not find any significant difference in the profile of multiple vs. one-time users. (1) Surpoids chez les enfants suisses et associations avec certaines caractéristiques chez les enfants et leurs parents Le but de cette étude était de mesurer la prévalence du surpoids et de l?obésité chez les enfants de sixième année du canton de Vaud (âge moyen de 12 ans) et les facteurs associés au surpoids. Les données ont été récoltées lors d?une étude menée par l?Institut universitaire de médecine sociale et préventive. Tous les enfants scolarisés en 6ème année à l?école publique du canton de Vaud entre septembre 2005 et mai 2006 étaient éligibles à participer à cette étude. Le taux de participation a atteint 76% (soit 5207 enfants de 12,3 ans en moyenne). Le poids et la taille des enfants ont été mesurés à l?école par des assistants de recherche et les enfants ont rempli, en classe, un questionnaire structuré sur leur mode de vie (notamment : temps quotidien passé à regarder la télévision, à jouer à des jeux sur écran; fréquence de la pratique de diverses activités physiques; fréquence de la consommation de fruits ou de légumes). Des informations sur les parents (niveau d?éducation, nationalité, poids et taille) ont été récoltées au moyen d?un questionnaire structuré envoyé par courrier à ceux-ci. Nous avons utilisé les critères de l?International Obesity Task Force, qui définit les valeurs-seuils de l'indice de masse corporelle pour le surpoids et pour l?obésité, par age et par sexe. La prévalence du surpoids (obésité incluse) dans la population était de 15% chez les garçons et de 12% chez les filles, et la prévalence de l?obésité était de 2% dans les deux sexes. Nous avons trouvé que le surpoids était associé de façon indépendante avec le temps passé à regarder la télévision, ainsi qu?avec certaines caractéristiques des parents, comme le surpoids, un bas niveau d?éducation et une nationalité étrangère. En conclusion, un enfant sur sept est en surpoids ou obèse dans le canton de Vaud. Ces chiffres indiquent un important défi de santé publique, même si cette prévalence dans le canton de Vaud est, actuellement, moindre que dans beaucoup d?autres pays d?Europe, et bien moindre qu?en Amérique du Nord. Les associations entre le surpoids infantile et le temps passé à regarder la télévision, ainsi que les associations avec des variables liées au milieu socio-culturel des parents indiquent plusieurs pistes d?intervention pour prévenir le surpoids chez les enfants. Il est probable que les mesures de prévention ne devraient pas se limiter aux approches individuelles, mais devraient aussi inclure des mesures structurelles sur l?environnement social, physique et économique visant à réduire les facteurs obésogènes dans la société.<br/><br/>Objective: The objective was to assess the prevalence of overweight and obesity in children in a canton of Switzerland and the association with various characteristics of the parents and the children. Research Methods and Procedures: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in all children of the sixth school grade of the canton of Vaud, Switzerland. Weight and height were measured, and selected lifestyle variables were assessed with a self-administered semiquantitative questionnaire. Information on children?s parents was gathered through a mailed structured questionnaire. Overweight and obesity were based on the International Obesity Task Force criteria. Results: Of 6873 eligible children, 5207 (76%) participated (2621 boys, 2586 girls; mean age, 12.3 years; standard deviation, 0.5 year). The prevalence of overweight (including obesity) was 15.0% (95% confidence interval, 13.7% to 16.4%) in boys and 12.4% (11.1% to 13.7%) in girls, and the prevalence of obesity was 1.8% (1.3% to 2.3%) and 1.7% (1.2% to 2.2%), respectively. In both univariate and multivariate analyses, overweight was strongly associated with high television viewing time and selected characteristics of the parents (overweight, low educational level, and foreign nationality). Discussion: The prevalence of pediatric overweight and obesity was lower in this region of Switzerland than in several European countries. The correlates of overweight found in this region suggest areas for potential interventions.

Se presentan los resultados de una investigación desarrollada mediante la administración de un cuestionario sobre usos y evaluaciones que hacen chicos y chicas de diversos medios audiovisuales (televisión, ordenador, consola, CD-Roms educativos, Internet y juegos para ordenador y para consola). Los resultados nos muestran cómo los progenitores sobreestiman sistemáticamente las informaciones que sus hijos e hijas tienen acerca de cualquier medio audiovisual. En términos generales, los videojuegos son el medio con más concordancias negativas, el ordenador el que tiene más concordancias positivas y la televisión el que acumula más discrepancias entre generaciones.

A lo largo de la última década en Cataluña, la heterogeneidad identitaria, lingüística, cultural y étnica ha crecido de manera importante. En consecuencia, nuestras escuelas se han transformado en centros donde la pluralidad étnica, religiosa, cultural y lingüística es cada día más evidente. Pero, a diferencia de otros territorios del Estado, una de las características fundamentales de nuestro Sistema Educativo es su organización bajo los parámetros de la educación bilingüe. De esta manera, además de un profundo dominio del catalán, lengua propia de Cataluña y lengua usada como vehicular y de aprendizaje en la enseñanza, se persigue un buen conocimiento de la lengua castellana. En este contexto, diferentes estudios ponen en evidencia el papel clave del dominio de la lengua de la escuela tanto de cara a garantizar el éxito escolar como para la integración y la cohesión social. Con este marco de fondo, nos situamos en el caso del Instituto de Educación Secundaria (IES) de Guissona, en la comarca de la Segarra, donde por circunstancias diversas el fenómeno migratorio ha sido muy importante a lo largo de la última década. El objetivo de nuestra investigación es el análisis de las competencias lingüísticas del alumnado de dicho centro, tomando como referencia el nivel de competencia lingüística de sus iguales autóctonos.En concreto, a partir de una muestra de 28 niños y niñas inmigrantes que fueron comparados con un grupo de 93 escolares autóctonos de su misma edad y nivel escolar, nuestro trabajo analiza el desarrollo de diferentes habilidades en lengua catalana y castellana.
